My family's started to make a ritual of dropping by this cozy little cafe whenever we're in the area. The cafe is run by a lovely, hard working couple who thoughtfully craft every crepe. They don't mess around with quality. I wish the best for them. I will note that the type of crepes they make are, like, some kind of rice flour based crepe, and not a typical wheat flour crepe (I THINK). I've been coming here ever since they opened their doors in the Rockville Town Square! The owner(s)/management are always incredibly kind to me, and I've been so glad that they made it through some of the worst that the pandemic has brought so far to small businesses. Amai takes be right back to being in Japan with their Japanese-inspired crepes and crepe-flavors! My go-tos are the Tuna and the Mixed berry (I always add banana to it!). I feel like this place has so much potential to be our go to crepes spot, but some things were not the best. If we were rating presentation, then 5 stars for sure! But overall, there could be some improvements. Some weekends we crave for crepes, but we haven't really found any that we love in the area. I went online and found Amai Crepe. It's a 20 min drive each way, but we wanted to try it! My husband and I ordered the Angus Beef Crepe and added egg as our main course. For dessert, he ordered the Chocolate Lovers and I ordered the Banana Nutella Crepe. The Angus Beef Crepe was delicious, but there was not much meat. My husband and I were joking that they put 1 piece of beef and shredded it into pieces. It was more of a vegetable crepe. The crepes itself were not fresh, especially for the dessert crepes. It was already a bit hard, as though it was made days ago. Anything with chocolate for me is still good though. Omg, this place saved my life. I was craving for caffeine at 10:00pm, but didn't want to have a cup of 7-11 coffee favor water. Luckily, this cafe opens till 10:30pm on Saturdays. Both crepes were surprisingly delicious cuz I was so turned off by the service. The lady behind the counter seemed annoyed when we were ordering, she was really short with us. It took over 20 minutes for two crepes to come out, but she was clearly putting effort into her crepe art. Regardless, she made a damn good Matcha Chocolate Truffle Crepe, it was slightly crispy but still soft and stuffed full with chocolate and strawberries. Didn't even get to snap a pic of it. Stopped by Amai after dinner out for dessert. The restaurant serves both sweet and savory crepes as well as coffees. My husband let me choose so I went with the Chocolate truffle. It was a beautifully crafted dessert, but I honestly did not know how to eat it. Embarrassed to ask, I started breaking off the pieces of the outer layer and then sort of took bites as of it were a sandwich... It didn't stay beautiful for long :) The crepe was tasty: I liked the matcha a lot more than I thought I would, but was dissatisfied with the lack of chocolate truffles within, I think there were four or so total? I also felt this was an experience snack at $8.48 (with tax) because getting a bubble waffle elsewhere would have been more food for the money. That kind of annoyed me, along with the other 3 people that were just waiting around for their orders. I took it with me in the car because I didn't have time to sit and eat due to the long wait. The crepe was light and crispy on the outside. Instead of using regular lettuce, they used spring mix which I thought added a lot of texture to the filling of the crepe. Okay, so yeah, I'm giving this 5 stars, but it's a 5 stars based on a few things and then potential. 5 stars for decor and cuteness, atmosphere and location. Lovely, light, and fresh! I ordered the chicken teriyaki wrap and one of my friends brought it over so it wasn't instantly consumed and was still delicious. The fact that they put red onions in my wrap, (and I cannot stand red onions in dishes), and that I actually ate it and thought it enhanced the wrap, should tell you everything you need to know! I was surprised by a few things here. For one, I didn't quite get until I arrived that this was a Japanese dessert place, not your usual French crepes. I didn't realize that they do rice-flour crepes and thus can do a lot for the gluten-free crowd. When I was in there, I didn't realize that what looked like a mural on the wall was actually the door to a bathroom, which they have despite being a rather small place, which was handy. All that said, I walked by the neighboring movie theater and the classic Ben and Jerry's solely to eat here, and the surprises added up to something good. I decided to order the crepe with adzuki bean paste and various green tea flavored confections on top. Despite that description, the adzuki bean paste wasn't a major flavor and other ingredients came through equally strongly, including ample strawberries and almonds. It was all quite delicious and held together rather well. Since no one flavor dominated, the contrast in textures and tastes was impressive. Among my sources of dissatisfaction with them are that they don't do buckwheat crepes (buckwheat is certainly common in Japan since they make noodles out of it, French places often make crepes out of it, and it is nutritious and delicious). While they can avoid gluten and they asked if I had a nut allergy, they don't seem to have too much for the dairy-free crowd. And I wasn't really wowed by their savory options, as explained in part by the previous points. But would I come back for another cool-looking dessert crepe with a variety of flavors? Yes. This place is located by Regal Rockville Cinemas, cute place with a few tables and a brick wall which was a perfect background for my insta picture. Adzuki bean paste, matcha gelato with sliced almonds on top, strawberries, custard cream, chocolate pocky sticks, whipped yogurt with the crepe made out of rice flour so yay for gluten free! It wasn't too sweet and every bite was evenly a treat. I'm craving it again as I'm writing this review! The price was on the higher side but totally worth it for the flavor and presentation. The business is located where there used to be a cute little cafe with pretty good food, but hey, this isn't a bad alternative at all. In fact, I was really excited for there to be a Japanese crepe place since I'd only ever seen them in California or NYC. Amai may mean "sweet" in japanese, but actually you can choose from sweet or savory crepes. There is also coffee, milk tea, and boba. I had sweet, matcha chocolate truffle crepe, while my husband went for savory, the BLT. They're more filling than a typical snack, but not filling enough for a meal, so you might get hungry later. Both options were awesome. My crepe is a pretty standard option as far as crepe choices go. There was a slightly spicy sauce in the BLT that kicked it up a notch from your traditional BLT. Crepes tend to be softer in Japan, but these crepes had a crunchier texture. I imagine it's to better hold the goods in, and it gave a very satisfying crunch when you take a bite. I also think they gave some thought into the presentation of the crepe, on a stand and decorated. Prices are about $8-10 per crepe. In Japan they're usually $6-9, so a tad more expensive, but to us it was worth it because it's so rare here. I wish I lived closer, because I'd definitely come here often if I did. read more
