Malay roti at Aman Cafe is such a star! There's not many Oakland Malaysian spots, so when my girls and I had a free weekday lunch we ran over to check them out. The shop is located on busy Broadway, but if you park one street over/by the homes, you snag free street parking! They allow well-behaved small dogs, saw the cutest doodle at the next table. The menu is easy to read and I knew right away I wanted a savory roti and their mango lassi. The mango lassi was THICC gurl. It was refreshing, but know that it's rich honey. Vibrancy and flavor is the name of Malaysian dining. I love how low-key it is, and family friendly. We brought a little to our table, and she had lots of fun people watching. The garlic noodles looked yum too, got a lil spice to it, but the roti was the ultimate item to get. The sweet roti was a hit with the little, and she enjoyed her fruit and berries. The ambiance could do with a little more oomph though. Maybe some Malay music overhead? Or some fans/AC? The restroom is clean and a unisex stall, and I love that we have to bus our own plates. We love responsible dining. Can't wait to come back to Aman Cafe, highly recommend.

Cool little spot! I got the roti with fruit and it was delish! They had all the fresh fruits I love on top of the roti like blueberries, strawberries, and bananas. It didn't taste too sweet and I'd totally come back to try the savory roti.

Summary: Not bad, but there are better eats on Telegraph Details: So, the food at Aman isn't bad, for the most part. In fact, their tea leaf salad and roti (the actual roti itself) is pretty good! But those two limited options aside, we found the rest of our entrees pretty average, including too-salty garlic noodles, and a pretty forgettable curry dish to accompany the roti. Not a bad option if you're just a bit more selective with the menu and/or just looking for a roti snack, but for a full meal, you'll probably find something more satisfying a few blocks down on Telegraph. Accessibility: Spacious with plenty of accessible seating.

Came here for a lunch to celebrate one of my friend's birthday around 12PM, and this place was popping off. There was a person at almost every table. The place is free seating ,but luckily, they were able to accommodate our group of 7 after reshuffling tables and asking people if they didn't mind moving. Parking was a little bit of a struggle to find around the cafe; but, we ended up finding some a couple of blocks down. The location is a little hidden, and we ended up accidentally walking past it at first. However, just pay attention to the signage above to find it. The place gets a lot of open sunlight and the inside has a nice interior with black wood accents and wooden tables. The place is less lit since the sunlight compensates for a lot of the light. For this place, you need to order from the front register, and they have plenty of menus to look at. The menu is broken down into savory, sweet and noodles/ rice dish categories and has a good amount of vegetarian options. A majority of the group ended up going with the Roti Comfort w/ Chicken, since most of us were craving a more meat-oriented dish. And this dish was absolutely delicious. The roti (which was nice and crispy) and the sauce they provided to accompany the chicken was flavorful and worth the try, leaving us wanting more to eat. I think this place is definitely a place I would frequent. My friends and I agreed that we would come back solely just to eat that dish again. This place has a very good rating on Yelp, and now I understand why after dining here.

The place is small and clean. Service is good. You order at the register and they bring it out to you. The food was very flavorful and came out pretty quick. I would love to come back and try some of their other items on the menu.

This place offers really good roti if you are looking for a decent roti spot! I ordered the Roti comfort with chicken which came with roti, a small saucepan of curry, and small dish of chicken, mixed veggies, and a side avocado in a flavorful curry sauce. This dish is pretty filling and felt a bit heavy as I continued eating and you can split it into 2 meals if you want. I would've wanted a bigger portion of the meat and vegetables in the curry sauce with the amount of roti I got.

Aman Cafe is a cute cafe that serves surprisingly delicious food! I came here for lunch and was very impressed by both the quality and quantity of food. Definitely planning to come back and try some of their other dishes :)

The food here is DELICIOUS!!! Great bold flavor and the roti was crispy and flaky. At this restaurant, you order at the cashier first and then the food is brought to your table. Almost every table was taken at 1PM on a Saturday so it might be harder to find a table during peak hours The service was also very fast, I think our food was ready in less than 10 minutes. The chicken and potatoes rice bowl was much spicier than the roti comfort, but both were really tasty. I will definitely be back!

I wanted to go to Teni East Kitchen but it was closed on a Sunday grrrr. Luckily, their sister restaurant was open so we popped in. I ordered the breakfast roti, pea shoot salad (which I'd seen on the menu at Teni), and garlic noodles with shrimp. Total before tip came out to around $50. Breakfast roti - 4/5. Super flaky and soft. Comes with curry and a stir fried breakfast situation with tempeh and carrots, topped with egg and a teeny slice of avocado. This is my first time ordering a dish with avocado and only getting a slice... usually they at least give me a half but it seems we need to cut costs where we can. Pea shoot salad - 3/5. This salad was way too salty and there was so much dressing that it turned the pea shoots slimy. If they went lighter on the dressing I think it would taste so much better. Garlic noodles - 4/5. These were a great texture, and coated in sauce. We paid $2 extra for shrimp and got about 6 shrimp. This is a casual spot to stop in. Food comes out pretty fast. You bus everything yourself.

The Roti Comfort with chicken is amazing. Each aspect of the plate comes together to create a divine harmony of flavor. They cook the veggies in a sauce that is good but the sauce to top it off brings the flavor level out of this world. This roti contains a good meat (I got chicken) to vegetables ratio. Aman Cafe is a delight all around. The service is timely and friendly. The restaurant itself is a lovely place. I look forward to my next meal here, as I can hardly wait for my next order of Roti Comfort. read more

So so so good! I am obsessed! I had the chicken roti and it was incredible. The veggies on it were perfectly cooked, the flavors on everything were delicious. The roti was so crispy and soft inside, perfect for grabbing bites of the chicken and veggies and dipping into the coconut curry sauce. I really appreciated how the avocado was perfectly ripe as well. I will definitely be returning, thank you! read more

I've only ordered the plain roti and mango lassi from Aman Cafe, but they both did not disapprove! The roti was so crispy and not too oily. I personally love a simple plain roti, but I want to go back and try one of the ones with toppings. The Mango lassi was delicious too and hit the spot and went well with the roti. read more

Delicious food served beautifully in a low key but elegantly designed cafe (plus friendly and attentive service). Aman is a an awesome addition to the Broadway food scene and innovates on roti pratha, a common starter / side in Southeast Asian cuisine to make it the centerpiece of a unique menu that caters to many different palates. Sweet, savory, veg friendly, meat friendly...there's something for everyone. The roti is expertly made - super layered, flaky, and buttery. The accompanying entree is served piping hot and very flavorful (I got the tropical and my husband the chicken). The plating and presentation are pretty as well as practical. Portion size is generous. If you're in the area and looking for a casual eating experience that is different, satisfying, and eminently agreeable, Aman is your spot! read more

I've had both their roti w fruit and coconut ice cream as well as the spicy coconut tofu and potato and both are exceptional. i've actually been getting the tofu weekly because i can't get enough of it. i like the vibe inside and the service is very friendly. read more

Really glad this place opened up! Temescal needed another vegetarian and vegan-friendly breakfast + lunch spot. Great flavors, incredibly consistent, and affordably priced. A whole restaurant dedicated to the deliciousness of Malaysian roti canai! Yes, please. From the creator of Teni East, and former general manager of the original Burma Superstar, it's got real culinary pedigree. And fascinating that the owner grew up in Ethiopia before becoming obsessed with southeast Asian cuisine. I love the Bay Area food scene. Vegetarian friendly, sweet or savory, and open all day. Super tasty, coconut milk-inflected and velvety curries infused zing into yummy tofu and veggies. The roti are out of this world. The curries topping different dishes taste almost identical, but hey--if you've got a good thing going, why mess with it? Space is spare and a bit echoey but comfortable and you can sit by the big front window on comfy seating. I'll be back for sure. read more

Every time I go here, I'm shocked there's not a line out the door. Aman is always delicious, warm, comforting, filling, fresh and affordable! My go-to is the 'Roti Comfort with Chicken' and I often get their fresh fruit roti as a delicious dessert option. They have a small menu but I don't knock them for it - a small menu means you can focus on doing things well - and they do those things really well. Their roti is amazing and their sauces are oh so good (that yellow sauce - yum). They also have many vegetarian options. I'd post a pic but it was too delicious. read more

We got the Roti with chicken and the Roti Breakfast. The food was good, but I was unfairly expecting the flavors for the two items to be different in some way, but they're essentially the same with different proteins. The Roti and their curry dipping sauce was definitely good though! Also the food came out very quickly. read more

Have been meaning to come here and try the food given how much I love Teni East and I was not disappointed! I had the comfort roti and the name couldn't be anymore spot on. The ultimate comfort meal. The roti was incredible, easily the best I've ever had. It was flavorful, not too oily and the texture was heaven sent. The roti is topped with a bounty of super flavorful veggies and just when you think it can't get any better, there is what tastes like maybe some sort of curry sauce that is TO DIE FOR. Absolutely loved every bite and was stuffed after. read more

This stop has been bookmarked since they opened, and trust me when I tell you they did not disappoint! In a diverse food hub as big as expansive as Oakland, they somehow managed to bring something totally unique to the table. We ordered the tropical with an egg (I think it may have had its own unique name) and comfort meals, and loved both, most menu items are vegan, and there are vegetarian options, as well as meat options. So much flavor in the curries, and the roti is perfection. To drink, we got a Thai tea, which was surprisingly not sweet but still good. And what was probably the best mango lassi I've had. Counting down until we can go back! read more

So worth the drive to Aman! I usually order the vegan Comfort Roti full of veggies and a good amount of tofu. For takeout it traveled well. Extremely impressed the packaging was compostable containers including a Bio Bag. I hope this effort convinces more folks to support Aman Cafe. read more

Yum. I have had roti before but not as the centerpiece. It is so flaky and addictive! I ordered the breakfast roti and a Thai tea which was very good, not too sweet which I like. The food was a delicious roti piled with delicious veggies cooked in a creamy spiced sauce. The egg was a tad over cooked but the veggies and roti were so good it still gets 5 stars 100%! SO AWESOME! Cute little cafe with probably the best roti i've ever had (like roti and a croissant had a love child) and some really rich, delicious curry sauces with generous portions. Love the healthy options, I got the root vegetable plate and they piled on the veggies and gave me a couple little orange slices for dessert. If you like indian food and/or are looking for tasty veggie options, definitely give it a try. read more

Some of the best food I've ever had! I've dined in and picked up, and it's always been amazing. The roti comfort and tropical roti are fantastic. Mango lassi is great as well. The interior is quaint and a great spot for lunch. Love that they're open on saturdays now! read more

Oh my what a pleasant surprise! We walked by looking for lunch and wanted something fresh and tasty. The idea of a "roti" (Malaysian style) style was intriguing! She got the Tropical Roti and the flavors were so on point, and the spicy coconut sauce was killer good. I wanted something sweet so got the Zag Roti with bananas and sweet condensed milk. That with a cup of coffee totally hit the spot. Made our day (wish we took pictures before diving in but we were too hungry). And great music playing, too! read more

Genuinely one of my favorite spots in Oakland. Excellent prices, excellent portions, all around absolutely delicious. They offer sweet and savory roti canai (I've tried both) and they are incredible! My personal favorite is the tropical roti -- vegan, and a perfect blend of spices and sauces!! Cannot recommend this spot enough. Please support them & other small businesses in Oakland! read more

My first time here the wait staff couldn't be bothered to say hello or good morning. Both were texting on their cell phones that they had on the counters and then served food. The non-hygienic practices and lack of basic customer service would prevent me from coming back. The food was too heavy and too sweet with coconut milk in everything. I don't recommend at all. read more

Wowwowowowow!!! Imagine the most buttery, flakey doughy creation. Now topped with sautéed fresh veggies in a delicious coconut sauce to make it slightly healthy. Can't recommend this place enough. And the staff is super sweet. Hope they do well- just opened. read more

Sometimes you discover new and amazing things by just walking down the street. I've never had crispy roti, but southeast Asian pan breads never disappoint. Imagine a delicious Thai-style curry except instead of rice it's served with a warm, slightly crisp flatbread that's flaky on the outside and chewy on the inside. So good. If I lived in the area I'd be a regular. read more

Then again, I'm used to Indian chais. I would pass on the chai. There was basically no one else there on a Friday afternoon during off-peak hours. It was dimly lit and kind of chilly because the door was left open, so it wasn't the most comfortable cafe ambiance. The wifi did work well though and I would come back to try more Eritrean and Ethiopian food.

As a result, it took a while for them to be able to stop by our table and provide water, take our order, etc. There was quite a long wait between sitting down to ordering to actually receiving our food. By the time we had actually received our food, almost an hour had passed. While we were waiting, a few other servers eventually joined, but service was still pretty bare for us and we never received refills on water or plates to eat off of when we received our food. I understand that staffing and a backup in the kitchen are out of the staff's control, but it would've definitely helped for us to know in advance how long to expect to wait to align our expectations and arrange our plans for the day. Would advise giving customers a quick heads up/warning because that on its own would've made a big difference. As for the actual food, we ordered the mac trio with elote mac, chicken pot pie mac, and kogi short rib mac (for an extra fee). The elote mac was the best and most flavorful, the short rib mac was okay but not amazing or worth the extra money, and the chicken pot pie mac was very bland/flavorless and didn't have much chicken in it. The food didn't feel like it warranted the wait time and because of that I would not return.

FUN FACT: I learned recently that hojicha lattes have more caffeine than loose leaf teas because lattes use crushed whole leaf powder, so you're consuming the whole leaf rather than steeped tea leaves. The peanut gives a slight salty and nutty flavor profile to the drink. I really enjoyed it! Overall, I would love to come back and try more of their drinks!

I recently visited Aman Cafe in Oakland and was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food and the ambiance of the restaurant. The decor was chic and modern, with comfortable seating and plenty of natural light. The menu offered a diverse range of dishes, all of which were expertly prepared and bursting with flavor.
