    Undercooked crust
    Albert T.

Amar Pizza always seems to appear on the lists of the top pizzas to try out in Detroit. It's not very surprising either, as it's such a rarity to see these kind of fusion flavors in the area. It's been on my try list for years and I finally got a chance to visit the Troy location this past weekend. I ordered over the phone and was quoted around a 25 minute wait time, which makes sense for a Detroit-style pizza with minimal wait. The shop itself is a purely takeout place, with only an order window and two chairs to wait for the pizza. We went with the highly recommend Naga Pizza and started to dig in in the car while it was still fresh. Naga Pizza, Large, Square Deep Dish ($23.99) - This is an 8-square Detroit-style pizza cut into 12 squares (3x4). I found it not too spicy at the start but as I ate more, it got progressively more and more spicy. I don't eat too much South Asian food, but the combination of spices and the cheese kind of reminded me of a spicy paneer makhani, with a rich cheesiness, combination of different spice flavors, and a lighter note from the red onions and cilantro on top. The chicken breast chunks are tender and provided some respite from the spicy flavor. Overall the flavors work very well together in a pizza format. While the flavors are good, unfortunately this particular pizza is not a good Detroit-style pizza. The crust is super wan here, with barely a hint of browning or caramelization and no texture other than chewy dough, with a slight undercooked dough flavor. The dough itself seems to be typical dense and chewy pizza dough instead of the more airy and lighter focacia-like dough that is emblematic of a Detroit-style pizza. There's no cheese on the edges to decorate the crust and give an additional crunch or provide the requisite oil to help grease the crust and fry it as it bakes. (3/5) When I got home, I lightly heated up several slices in a pan with oil, which improved the crust to a crisp and ameliorated the doughy flavor. The problem is if I'm getting takeout, I shouldn't need to do any additional cooking to fix the food! Bathrooms - Amar Pizza is takeout only and there are no customer accessible restrooms. I came in with very high expectations of getting a great fusion Detroit-style pizza. While I did get an inventive and tasty pizza, I did not get a good Detroit-style pizza. The crust was undercooked and just plain not good. If I had to order another pizza from here, I would try their standard crust only.

Small, hole in the wall excellent pizza every time. Owners are hardworking simple people who always give good service.

After reading about Amar pizza in the NYT, I had to try it! We got the naga, tandoori and dry fish pizzas. They can do a half and half if you call, but there is not an option in that for online ordering FYI. We got them Detroit style and they were super flavorful, fun pizzas! The naga sauce had a nice heat and went really well with the fresh cilantro and other toppings. The dried fish pizza was good too, but if you don't like anchovies, I would skip it. We also got a side of naga wings, which were delicious. We tried a side order of the ghost sauce to see if we could handle it. Hot, but doable if you like heat. Make sure you check Amar out!

The Square pizza was good. But the Deep Dish wasn't cooked all the way. I'm guessing the dough needed time to thaw.

I've been searching far and wide for halal Detroit style pizza and everyone told me Amar Pizza does it best! I went to the Troy location with my husband and it was small and cute, they made everything fresh and brought it to our car so graciously, what great service We started with an Amar hot dog which had a nice kick to it and then got a small half Philly Cheese steak half Naga pizza (chicken based) and my tastebuds were e l e v a t e d. I can confidently say this was the best Detroit style pizza I've ever had, 10/10 must get!!

This may be the best pizza! I've recently moved to the area and have tried numerous pizza places, looking for the one that I can call "my spot." We tried Amar last night, and I loved it! My issue with many pizza places is that they load the sauce on. If you're not a fan of a ton of pizza sauce, this place is for you! I ordered a small deluxe, medium pepperoni, and the bread sticks. I didn't try the deluxe, but my husband said it was pretty good. The pepperoni was perfect, and don't even get me started on the breadsticks, they're drool worthy.

I love Amar's pizza because it is unique. They have both deep dish and thin crust. I have had the Ghost pizza which is spicy. I had this on the thin crust. I had the Detroiter pizza as a deep dish. The Detroiter is representative of a Coney Island dogs with hotdogs, chili, onions melted cheese and jalepenos. Both were delicious. You must visit the menu and see what other unusual pizzas they have!

Southwestern Pizza. Loved every bit, toppings down to the crust.
    Kim T.

Heck of a pizza selection! If you live in Troy, definitely check it out--could be your new pizza place! I recently followed them on instagram and had to give it a try. We went for the Southwestern pizza. They do not skimp on the toppings which are fresh and for this pizza, I loved the variety from beef, jalapenos, tomatoes, onion and fresh cilantro. Friends were raving about the crust as well! We ordered through third party delivery and we were happy with our service! We already know the next specialty pizza we will be trying!

Ghost pizza has amazing flavor but the spinach feta comes close! With Ghost and ranch on the side of course. Might be my fav Detroit style pizza around town...

However after placing our order on the screen, the two iced latte drinks came out with no espresso added? Apparently on the ordering screen you have to CHOOSE to add espresso, which is counterintuitive because then it's just sugar milk. Anyways that was fixed and my bubble fruit tea was good. I appreciate all the ways to personalize the tea and it's Good that they have non dairy drinks options! The staff person kinda awkwardly set the tray on our table and left - she didn't hand out the drinks to us, which is kind of weird? The cake we ordered took awhile to come out even though it was right there in the display - and I even inquired about it. we were done with our drinks by the time it came out - so it wasn't great timing and we were just over it. The spoons were cute but way too small to enjoy anything - my kiddo liked it though for a few bites. I feel like this was just for ambience and not really sustenance, not sure if I would come back. Maybe for the noodles or other foods but there's lot of other options nearby! They also advertise pizza on their front sign but I didn't see any on the inside menu...? Easy lot parking - watch out for the large pothole up front though!

Renee's has been a trusted spot in our home for years because they make it so easy to order safely. They clearly list all ingredients and allergens on their website, and as someone who deals with gluten and dairy restrictions, I genuinely appreciate that level of care. This time, I ordered through DoorDash and the food arrived quickly and still warm. We tried a variety of things, and one of the standouts was the deep-dish meat lovers pizza with vegan cheese. The crust had that chewy texture I've deeply missed since going gluten-free. It held up beautifully under layers of sauce, melty vegan cheese, and a generous helping of toppings. Bold, rich, and hearty. The chicken wrap surprised me--in a good way. It had a satisfying chew and was packed with toppings and flavor. I also got their cheese flatbread, which had a crispy edge and that deliciously soft center. Now, the fries? Not great. Soggy and under seasoned. My son picked at them but didn't ask for more. Definitely not their strong suit. But the elephant ears made up for it. Warm, sweet, lightly crisp, and topped with just the right amount of icing--they were the perfect way to end the meal.

As a New Haven pizza fan, the REAL kind, I was extremely disappointed. I know that after having eaten the real New Haven (Pepe's, Sally's, and Modern), I need to tighten down my expectations, but come on! They have these beautiful ovens, a nice, clean, and pleasant place and they turn out what I would consider pizza no better, perhaps a little less good than Hungry Howies thin crust pizza! New Haven is supposed to be crispy and chewy, NOT soggy. I tried Farmington Hills a few months ago and ate in, then last week tried Birmingham and carried out. For those of you thinking that my carry-out experience may have been bad due to the 3 miles I had to drive home, but I've carried out a LOT of pies from a LOT of locations, and I DO take that into account. There are some positives: The ingredients were impeccable. Fresh, high-quality cheese and the mushrooms were done really well. The pepperoni was of good quality but nothing worth writing home about. There are a lot of great pepperonis in the area. The doneness was great. It wasn't over- or undercooked. The flavor was good, but not, as some have said, amazing. In both cases, the crust was limp and soggy, NOT chewy and crispy. Not in the least. I don't mind if it's a little bit floppy, but not like this. An analogy I might give is to compare Tomatoes Apizza to Modern Apizza in actual New Haven is like comparing Jets Pizza to Loui's. Jet's is fine, but Loui's! (If you know, you know). To me, Modern in New Haven is at par, and not to be sacrilegious to our beloved Detroit Style, with Loui's or Palazzo Di Pizza, so it's not a style issue. My two experiences were both the same, so I don't know what to think. I'll give them one more try at some point.
