This place isn't study friendly on the weekends. One of the workers told me that computers are not allowed on the weekends. Rather disappointing because I was looking forward to sitting down and getting some work done.... I was going to give 3 stars for that but the owner apologized and gave me a free pack of palmiers for the inconvenience. That definitely made me feel a little better! Shows that they really do care about maintaining customer satisfaction. I tried the chicken and beef empanadas, and they were absolutely delicious. I had the fresh churros with dark chocolate dip for dessert and they were also crispy and delicious. The coffee was also superb. I ordered the dark chocolate latte(a little bitter) and the condensed milk latte (a little sweet), and ended up mixing them. There are so many mouthwatering items on display and so little stomach space for everything. I'll have to come back later. The space is well maintained and well lit, but I get the feeling that this place is mainly meant to be for short meetings or takeout because it is rather small and table space is limited. Parking is gonna be either on the street or in a garage since it is in Old Town Pasadena. read more

I love their Paleo Pancakes. In fact their entire menu seems quite good. I'd love a side of bacon or sausage to go with. Sadly, they don't offer that. I prefer decaf coffee for a number of reasons. They don't offer that either. I'm picky like that. They have found their niche as the place is often busy. They have plenty of seating indoor and outdoor. Outdoor tends to be quieter. This is a spot that you could drive by and easily miss. Don't. Even if it lacks s few things for my taste, I will keep going back for the Paleo Pancakes. read more

Absolutely loved everything I've tried so far. I can't believe I have never been here after living in the area for several years - BIG mistake. The churros and croissants are amazing -- brought a churro platter to work and everyone agreed these were some of the best churros they'd ever had. For me, they were THE best. I also loved the cacao latte (had it iced). I'm a little picky about coffee shops but they exceeded my expectations. So wonderful. Been twice this week already, oops hehe. read more

The churros! Yum! We haven't been able to find churros as good as when we were in Barcelona until now. They are a little "crunchier" compared to when we were in Spain but the chewiness is there! Wowza are we happy we found this little treasure! They have a large selection of Venezuelan food and it is AMAZING!! Amara and Alex really make your experience even better upon your arrival. Although we don't live close by this is going to be a place we frequent quite often from now on, because it will put a smile on your face. The Arepas made your toes curl! Then we followed it with a cachito de jamón, which is always my favorite, and we even ordered before hand a pan de jamón and it smelled so excellent in the car we all had to try it before we got home!! This place will not let you down! We did not have any coffee or chocolate this trip but it gives us something extra to look forward to next time we come back!! We came specially for cachapas with authentic queso de mano. Unfortunately they ran out of the cheese the cachapas were not home made either! They were just like the prepackaged ones we use to buy when we lived in Florida. The arepas are way too thick and don't taste handmade. I'm sure they make the Harina pan masa but I'm thinking they use a mold to shape them. This makes it thick and edges were cracked. We had the shredded meat one and it had a cheese that was too salty. The criollo plate was amazing , very tasty. Meat was funky shredded and not dry! The empanadas are delish! This is one of my favorites The chicha was so refreshing and perfectly sweeten and creamy. If I come back I will only be ordering chicha, empanadas and criollo plate. Seating was a bit difficult, the place is small so seating is challenging. They have 2 to 3 tables outside. Parking was easy but you must have coins or download an app to pay for parking. read more

I ordered a breakfast arepa and a latte. The arepa was good--I'd never had one with egg before and it had Spanish chorizo, which I love. But the actual arepa bread part was very greasy and I don't think it was made to order. I think the bread had been made earlier that morning and then warmed up. How is it possible to make something so good but still lose a customer? By being rude. Decided to try it out while out walking. We walked in for a couple of iced lattes but proceeded to also buy an arepa and churros. For the record, the food and lattes were great and would have likely gone back. The issue I have is that one of the workers (didn't catch her name; she had platinum/blonde hair) asked what lattes we had ordered, I told her, and proceeded to give them to us. Minutes later, there was some confusion between her and another couple over drinks and then turned to us and asked again what we had ordered. I told her again, but flustered and in a rude tone asked "Where is your receipt? Take out your receipt." While she waited on me to produce a receipt that I discarded after she verified our drinks earlier -- plus, what if we had the wrong drinks? We had already drank about a third of each -- the other couple verified that the drinks she had were indeed theirs. She gave the drinks to them, then turned to us and quickly said "Sorry you guys" and went back behind the counter." I was fuming, but my daughter was with me, so I bit my tongue then. read more

It's alright nothing special, lacking customer service in a big way!! No help given even when told it was our first time here. We asked the difference between hot choclates and we were told what her favorite was going by the small laminated menu not the big one on the wall. Their restroom (only 1 available) DISGUSTING no seat covers available, urine all over the seat and floor when asked for seat covers employee said there wasn't any available WTH people!! This place is a great hole in the wall that had many options to choose from. I got the La Reina Arepa and it is was so flavorful and light; perfect for lunch. It also comes with a side salad that is just as tasty. And of course I bought churros and received two dipping sauces: dark chocolate and dulce de leche. I enjoyed the dulce de leche sauce more than the dark chocolate. Be warned that this place is very small and it gets busy. I came around 12:30pm on a Sunday but soon after there was a line out the door. It feels tight when you are eating inside but it doesn't ruin the experience. Highly recommend! read more

Warm service and yummy Venezuelan classics, with vegetarian and vegan options. On the "big portion size" endorsement from the staff, my boyfriend ordered the Gailpan Cachapa-- a cornbread pancake with mano cheese. His plate came with bacon, beans, and scrambled eggs with peppers and tomatos. By itself, the pancake was a bit sweet, but the savory combination with soft mano cheese and Nata criolla cream was just right. The slight edge went to my Avocado Eggs Cheese arepa, also with mano cheese (reminded me of sharper mozzarella). Smaller portion, but the arepa white corn sandwich was satisfying and craveable. We also split a Venezuelan drinking chocolate-- thick, rich, dark and indulgent. Visited for Saturday brunch in Old Town Pasadena-- by the time we left was filled with regulars. I work in the area and love Amara's coffee. They seriously have amazing coffee. With that said, my last experience there was horrible with their customer service. I was taking my break since I work in the area and stopped by to pick up the coffee. I asked the guy at the front if they take Apple Pay, he said no. Then I remembered I seen them on Eat24/Yelp for takeout. I asked him if they do takeouts in yelp, he said no. I pulled up yelp and said I think you do. And he said nope we don't, i don't think so. And everyone else working there all had blanked stares. I said yeah, I'm pretty sure this is you guys and you do, then he just shrugged and said looks like that answers your question! This is extremely rude customer service and totally left a bad taste in my mouth and I didn't purchase anything. Very disappointed in Amara. read more

This place was unique to say the least. I loved it!! Instead of using a premade mocha sauce, they use plain cacao in the mochas (I had mine with almond milk...WOW). I never would have thought of eating churros with coffee, and much less of dipping churros in a guava sauce, but it was amazing!! If you get churros, definitely try the dark chocolate dipping sauce; that was my favorite. read more

like 3.8 stars super cute cafe, very friendly staff - located by Cal Tech. seats about 20 people, intimate space. Tried the caramel apple = vanilla icecream, 5 pieces of churro with dulce leche sauce, at ~$10.50 think it was OK. adorable presentation, just wished churros a little more doughy, that could be a preference thing. went to Pasadena a few weeks ago to hang out with some friends. Stopped by for a espresso and hot chocolate and a late afternoon snack. My fiancé got the hot chocolate with a little hint of spice that made it a very interesting drink. The churros came out nice and hot and the dulce de leche dipping sauce was a nice addition to the dish. The place gets very busy so it was a little difficult to find a table. Ended up sitting next to the order counter so it was a little tight and loud. Everything they served seemed very authentic, looking forward to get the real deal in a couple months when I travel to Spain. read more

Stumbled upon this place after the Rose Parade and a latte was a perfect drink to have on an early chilly morning. Since this was a short stop, I only got to try the Amarella latte which was yummy. Being relatively new to the area, it's a great comfort to find such a nice place, not just the food, but the service. They have a great selection of food from Venezuela with great representation of typical dishes and some nice adaptations. Venezuelans will find it comfortable and a great taste of home to showcase our typical cuisine for friends. The location is awesome, with a big parking lot right next to it so it's ultra convenient. We sampled pretty much the whole menu and we recommend everything, the arepas, cachapas and patacones (Maracaibo) stood out, as well as the tequeños of course. No Venezuelan place would be complete without coffee and Chicha, which Amara's has multiple offerings of, fruit juices as well. A great selection of sweets rounds out the menu, churros, palmeritas and some chocolate. Awesome place! read more
