Wow. I deeply regret ever getting food here. I got the pad see ew and coconut Tom kha soup. First off, the noodles are drenched in garlic and comes with about 4 small pieces of broccoli and maybe 5 small pieces of chicken. Secondly, the soup was alright. I've been living in this area for 3 months, & have tried this & the two other near-by Thai places. The other 2 were fine, but this one is a cut above. It's the best Thai food I've ever had. I've ordered a bunch of dishes, but my favourite is their Panang. Generous portion of chicken (tho you can get beef or veg, too), & really complex seasoning, with finely diced herbs that gives each spoonful it's own nuance. They serve all their meals with 3 choices of heat. I always choose the spiciest & it is very spicy, so just be warned! The restaurant is always clean & even when they're bustling around serving others & preparing take-out, the staff in the open kitchen work so quietly. The servers are so friendly & refill your water endlessly. Just a really consistent, low key, high quality place. read more

Tiffany had steamed dumplings which were a Thai version of shumai. It was decent. She also had two beef skewers with sticky rice. I had the Pad See Ew with Beef. The noodles were uneven but tasty. The sauce was on the milder side. The eggs were a bit hard beaten and fried. The beef was low grade but not too tough. Overall, it was good meal for $12 / person. read more

Titz, I hope you didn't fail me. Since I had read so much praise about this place I decided to take the plunge and order some Thai for dinner. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. My pad see ew was very bland, unlike any I had ever tasted. I will say that the components were definitely high quality, and well cooked, but the flavors weren't there. I was really disappointed. My boyfriend felt the same way. I had to keep telling him that the spot has really great reviews, maybe we just have to order something different. Next time I might get a meat dish, to play it safe. One thing that I will not bash is the "Fried Wontons", or Gari Pup as they are called in most other restaurants. These are far from wontons. Chicken, curry and potato stuffed inside flaky and delicious pastry. Amazing. This was a serious hit, possibly the best I've ever had! Amarin...I'm going to give you one more chance. I crave this place like four times a week. IT IS SO SPICY. Don't get spicy unless you really believe in yourself, the medium is still pretty hot. It has really upped the ante on the level of heat that I can handle. I get the veg curry with tofu about 90% of the time, but the Pad See Ew with tofu is also good. My bf likes the Pad Thai. Their tofu is cut in large 3-bite triangles, I think it is poached, pretty fulfilling. Their veg is also cut pretty large, I wish it was a bit smaller since that's a lot of spiciness to put in your mouth when you're not that great at chopsticks like me. But it's always fresh-tasting and not over-cooked. You never have to wait for a table and pick-up is always ready in ten min. They give you your check when you are done, not 20 min later. BYOB and there's a bodega across the street and a winestore a few blocks down. Everything is like 10 bucks (I guess everything veg, I dunno about meattown). The inside is not fabulous, but kinda 90s cute with local art that is amusing sometimes and a big people-watching window. SO SPICY, I AM GOING THERE NOW EVEN THOUGH IT'S 11am. Cash only. read more

OMG... I love Amarin, so so much. I think that this restaurant single-handedly has cured my homesickness from moving out here from California. Not that I've even had Thai food this good in California. I guess the thought of eating Amarin is enough to make me forget about all problems and realize how awesome life is. The pad-see-ew(sp?) with tofu is my favorite. And we have only ordered delivery here, which is always fast and great. One time the guy accicentally brought 3 pad-see-ew's for my and my boyfriend, and he didn't even charge us extra for keeping the mistake. That was a very gluttonous night. It makes me sad when I look at SEA on Bedford, which is packed almost every night, because its nowhere near as good as Amarin but gets more business. Oh well. Go to Amarin! This place ROCKS! I went through a phase awhile back... I'd have to look at my Yelp reviews to determine when haha but a phase of BYO madness after realizing that I spend an extra $30-$45 at dinner for wine. Well Amarin Cafe is BYO! woohooo This place is busy busy. They do have a good number of seats and food comes out quickly so if there is a wait it won't be a long one. One of the coolest things about the menu is you can order any dish with your preferred level of spiciness. My fiancé was soooo excited when he got to have spicy massaman curry as you don't get that very often. I enjoyed my Pad Thai as well. The wontons were definitely more somosa like but good. I wasn't too impressed with Amarin despite it's good reviews. I've been wanting to try a new Thai place, so I thought I would check it out. The atmosphere is pretty standard, nothing fancy, but not dumpy, the menu had standard dishes with some specials, and the service was decent. They only take cash, which is really really annoying, but whatever. To start we had the vegetable dumplings which were GROSS. They didn't have any taste, they were super soggy and watery, I couldn't even eat them. It was just unappetizing. Then, I have the spicy noodle which was decent and the pad Thai which was also decent. Portions were smaller than I expected and the prices were a drop higher than song and sea from what I remember. Amarin is my favorite Thai spot in Greenpoint. It's got a few great things going for it. The best part about Amarin is that the spice levels are Thai-person spice, not white-person spice. So if you get your dishes spicy they will be HOT. I had a meal here a couple of months ago where I got everything at the highest spice level and it was a real experience - cleared my whole head and made me reassess my relationship to spicy cooking. Amarin is BYOB, making it a great place to get an affordable dinner with a group of friends and not have to spend as much on wine/beer as you did on the food. It's also got a wonderful, friendly staff that are attentive, unpretentious, and helpful -- and don't make you feel uncomfortable with the BYO aspect of it. Possibly my new favorite Thai restaurant ever. I would honestly put this place above Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas, which is supposedly the "number one Thai restaurant in the country". I have been to both places multiple times and here's why Amarin comes out on top... First of all, Thai restaurants are not meant to be upscale or fancy. Amarin has a casual, relaxed vibe that properly fits the culture and cuisine. It's BYOB, which makes it very affordable to bring a bottle of wine or whatever choice of beverage to enjoy with your meal. Second, the staff is very accommodating. Many Asian restaurants tend to be uptight and difficult to get what you want. Somehow it's always $1-2 extra for the simplest things and getting a refill on water is next to impossible. The staff at Amarin has always been friendly, polite, and willing to work with you on dining preferences. Delivery has always been on point. Third, pricing is VERY reasonable. Portions are decent (not huge, but won't leave you hungry). Most importantly, their FOOD. Oh my goodness, their pad kee mow is some of the best I've had. The only thing I would change is how much the noodles are all badly stuck together, which makes it seem like I'm eating one giant noodle rather than many noodles. They need to break their noodles apart better. With that being said, the flavor is GREAT and because of my abnormal addiction to ridiculously high levels of spice, I get mine "Thai spicy" level 6 on a scale from 1-5. They never disappoint on the spicy front and although they warn me every single time that I won't be able to handle it (and I get irritated because they literally tell me EVERY time)...they still deliver the insane amount of spice I look forward to. THANK YOU FOR ACTUALLY MAKING MY FOOD DELICIOUSLY DEADLY. Must haves: the hot & sour soup with shrimp, spring rolls, papaya salad, and of course the amazing PAD KEE MOW. read more

Nondescript Thai place that my date and I settled on before a show at the nearby Warsaw. Started with a green papaya salad that was mediocre. But the Penang Curry Chicken entree was fantastic. It was spicy but it didn't overwhelm the dish. Having not read the Yelp reviews in there, I didn't quite expect such a good dish. As for ambiance, there isn't any. Prices were affordable but not super-cheap (maybe $12 for the app and entree) So this is a 4-star rating with potential for 5-star if there other entrees were as good as the Penang Curry. This is the spot for Thai food in Greenpoint as far as I'm concerned and I'm still always surprised by the number of people who live here but don't know about this gem. There's something kind of magic about that, the main reason being because they aren't on Seamless and it's cash-only. Pick up the phone, go to the ATM, Amarin is worth it. My favorite dish I affectionately call stinky chicken, it's the chicken breast and mashed potatoes with mustard sauce and veggies. I know, who orders chicken and mashed potatoes at a Thai place? A good take on modern Thai cuisine that fit my particular spice requirements. Plus, it has cute dining area that features work from local artists, as well as employs a cool and friendly staff. after working on a production set, our group was famished and being in the neighborhood I whipped out my yelp and started seeing what was close by that could possible be an option. Seeing our options, Amarin Cafe seemed like the logical choice and before we'd pack for the day, we stopped by this place with our group of 15. The restaurant is a better take-out option as seating is limited, so we waited a little while for a few tables to clear up so we could extinguish the hunger. The staff was nice, accommodating and patient as we all settled in and ordered food. While we ordered many things of the menu to try and share among the group, I personally had the Thai Spring Rolls (Fried) and the Amarin Spiced Rice. I am big fan of the spicy drunken noodles but this time, opted for the Amarin Special as the description of fried rice with shrimp and spicy beef seemed the logical option. The food was prepped quick and so flavorfully delicious and spicy enough to light up a match as I had hoped. As sighed with each bite, I cannot deny how great it was. Anyone in the vicinity, should definitely give it a try and for the local in the area, I hope this is a regular to go to place, simply because I would love to live close to this place... read more

Every week and a half or so, I get the craving for Thai. And Amarin is my spot. One amazing/fun fact... In all my years of calling Amarin, the same woman has always answered the phone. Does she ever take a day off? Is she a robot? I'm not sure. But, I can tell you that the food is consistent, fresh and tasty. Their prices are very reasonable - two entrees usually come in at $17-18. This place is amazing. We really loved the massaman curry dish. Another great item on the menu is the grilled chicken breast even though it is a very inconspicuous description it is a very large and delicious portion. In addition to that, it is a family-run restaurant and has a great atmosphere. I have also had the pad Thai and the pad see ew which are both very very good. But possibly my favorite part of Amarin is the great prices and the value that you get for the price. It is also BYOB which means you can bring in whatever you would like to drink and get great prices on food. The place is always very busy and hopping with customers. The front of the building is all glass so it creates a very nice natural lighting if you go during the evening hours and also let's you enjoy what's going on on the street during the night hours. We were craving Thai and stumbled across this place on Yelp. Hubby was recovering from knee surgery, so we ordered delivery. (Retrospective aside: We ordered from here two days in a row since our first experience was so good and the Thai craving hadn't subsided after the first round) Evening 1: Beef Salad, Drunken Shrimp, Chicken with Garlic. All tasted fantastic, arrived hot and perfectly spicy.Because we were two, I would have ordered an extra rice, as there was only enough rice for one person. We ate it all up, barely any leftovers. Delivery was within 30 mins. Four stars. Evening 2: Tom Yum, Fish Cakes, Noodles with Beef, Chicken with Basil. Tom Yum was great, just enough for two (though I could easily have had seconds if there had been more left over). Fish cakes were good, Noodles with Beef...these could have been good, but they were just a bit too spicy (we can both handle heat...but when it gets in the way of the rest of the flavors, it just isn't enjoyable) and the noodles needed a little more sauce. Chicken with Basil was decent but we could have done with a little more chicken. Major complaint here, delivery. We were quoted 30 minutes and ended up waiting over an hour. We called after 60 mins and were assured the order was on it's way and 10 minutes later, it arrived. Three and a half stars. All in all, Evening 1 was the winner, and it may have simply been bad ordering that caused Evening 2's flavor to flounder. I would order from them again, but I'd stick to the Tom Yum, Drunken Shrimp (or chicken) and one of the chicken dishes with extra rice. A large part of how I value a restaurant (or any other experience, for that matter), is based on how it executes its purpose. That's why I can give a fancier restaurant whose food is arguably more "refined" a lower rating than a no-frills asian joint. That's why I love Amarin - it does what it's supposed to, and better than nearly every other place of its genre and cuisine. There are many (too many) Thai restaurants in NYC, and most immediately fall flat of being memorable. Amarin's food is very authentic (my girlfriend's Thai, so I differ to her), incredibly tasty, portioned properly (a lot, not too much), quick from the kitchen, and it's BYOB with no corkage fee (and there's a liquor store across the street... amazing). It doesn't pretend to be haute-cuisine... it serves its purpose perfectly, and consistently. I highly recommend the pad see ew, amarin fried rice, and pad kee mao. It's spicy, so be ready. read more

My wife and I LOVE their food. My favorite is the red curry chicken. Another favorite of ours is their shrimp fried rice with pineapple. Just about everything we order is a winner from this place. One thing to keep in mind is that medium is pretty darn spicy (and I love spicy food). Another thing to know is that this place is much better for take-out or delivery. We've eaten here in person and the decor and atmosphere is pretty bad. The people who work there are extremely friendly, it's just that the look of the place doesn't lend itself to a comfortable eating spot.
