My first visit to Monroe and to Amaya's was on Friday 6/29. My 11yo daughter got the nachos off the kids' menu, which were excellent though a bit spicier than she was expecting. My wife got the fajita trio, also excellent. I was torn between the chorizo burger and the mahi mahi tacos. The tacos come with smoked cherry salsa and that tipped the scales, and it was as good as I hoped it would be. The two tacos were small but delicous, and the pepper symbol on the menu ("dish may be spicy") was accurate. I may try the chorizo burger next time. It has plenty of seating in the inside and a bar my waitress, and the hostess were very nice and tentative. I will definitely be back to this place. Just because cilantro and salt are heap, doesn't mean you have to use a ton of them in your cooking. Had the shrimp, chicken and steak fajitas. The dish comes with rice, beans, and guacamole sides. Choice of tortillas. The shrimp was common. The steak far too chewy. The chicken dry. The bright spot: the onions and peppers. The beans were inedible, more salt than beans. Hubs and I went out for a date night and decided to trek it down to Monroe to try this place. Boy are we glad we did. The location is perfection, right on the corner in downtown Monroe, with easy access from 75. The restaurant was clean, the staff was all very pleasant, and the food...the FOOD!!! It was delicious. And the prices were very reasonable. We got there and ordered our drinks and meals. A few minutes later, the owner came by, found out I was a vegetarian, and asked if we wanted to try something new. We said we'd live to, and off he went. He made us an appetizer of Jackfruit, which I've never heard of. When he brought it to us, he explained it's super popular in tropical climates and newly over in California. It's a superfood that has a meaty texture and taste. It was DELICIOUS. He even gave us his cell phone number and email for if we want to experiment with it and need help picking it out or with recipes. Who does that?!?! So nice to have a new Mexican restaurant in town. Within easy walking distance to many neighborhoods in Monroe, it's a casual place for a quick burrito or taco. We sat at the bar and got to try a watermelon margarita they were perfecting-it's not officially on the menu yet but it's yummy! It will be a refreshing option for summer. Because it was lunch, we opted for salads. I had a steak fajita one and my sister had something with chicken. Service was fast and friendly. There were lots of people dining on a Saturday afternoon. This place is amazing. If you're looking for a new place to try, stop searching. I travel a ton for business and always try different places and this place cannot be topped. Seriously, ordered the Hellevah Bloody Mary and was told the garnishments took a little time and they did. When it arrived it was the best Bloody Mary I've ever had, garnishments and all - perfect amount of spice. It's great to know that you can go out for a good dinner and actually get the service and great food you are paying for! So much love put into every product they sell, you must try this place! Pretty disappointing fish tacos. I felt like not much care or concern went into making them. The corn tortilla shell wasn't cooked-straight out of the bag-tasted terrible. The fish was dry and in one large chunk with very little sauce or salsa. Also terrible presentation-serving two small tacos on a large platter with nothing else. Came in tonight looking for an enjoyable experience. Boy was I wrong to come in here. While the hostess sat us promptly the waitstaff while not busy was another story in itself. Hostess brought us chips and salsa about ten minuets later we finally met out waitress and trainee to order our drinks. After a short while the trainee returned to take our order just to inform us that there was no rice. Which I thought was odd for a Mexican restaurant which main staple is rice. But I digress. After thirty minuets from ordering we received our entrées while presentation was decent my enchiladas were cold and after biting into her taco the girlfriend became concerned. The Baja Shrimp tacos are the most amazing shrimp tacos I've ever eaten!! I'm literally obsessed. Im kind of embarrassed to say, but I've eaten them 4 times in 3 days. HOWEVER...they are SOOO small!!! My husband and I, and all of my kids, and all my employees would get these numerous times a week but they are literally three bites! The soft shells are so small they would barely be sufficient for a kids menu. So it basically comes out to $1.50 per bite!!! 3 small shrimp is all you get per taco! And I order very often from here, and literally every time I order the shells are a different size. And every time i order I ask the employee if they are using the normal sized shells today or the baby shells so I know how many tacos to order, and they always answer me as if they have no idea what I'm talking about. So anyways...I love this place and am very thankful to have them in our hometown...just wish the size of the tortillas made more sense! read more

My husband placed a $70 to go order that my Daughter In Law picked up. She got there and I was order was given to another patron. (It was an error, not a big deal so our order was remade). She arrived home with our order; our order was COMPLETELY wrong! It was a much needed stop after a long hot day. Mexican we craved and Mexican is what we sought out. Amaya's, being a small local restaurant was the choice we made, most in part for the fresh in the name. Who doesn't want fresh when it comes to a dining experience and in my experience the fresher the food the better for tantalizing the taste buds. We were greeted promptly and politely which is always the way one should start out a dining experience. As an experienced foodie one just doesn't read the menu they look around at what others are enjoying near by. Visually I was ready to delve into anything on the menu after a scan through the restaurant. We ordered our meals, i with an array of tacos to sample and the misses a salad. This is when the joy that has built slowly started to turn. Chips and salsa ( mild and medium ) were presented for our pre meal snacking. The chips were quite good. The salsa? Eh. Everything was quite fresh but lacked any flavor. We did mix the two which helped but still not living up to expectations. Then our meals arrived. Again visually I was ready to conquer each taco that laid in front of me and a sample of two of the misses salad. Then like earlier everything just lacked flavor. The freshness was there, the taco shell and the meat cooked perfectly but nothing came together when eaten. To me it is hard to review since so much was done so well but just came up short. But short in a very vital area. am not sure if I just happened to dine on a night where something went astray or If this is the norm. If I do ever wander back into town I would give this place a go again in hopes that my visit was a fluke. read more

So I'm going to preface this by saying the main dish we had did not feel very 'mexicany', but if it is any indication as to whether the food is good, I'll bet the other dishes offered are delicous. They certainly looked and smelled delicious as we sat at the bar and enjoyed what had to be the best chips and salsa I've had from ANY mexican joint. That's right - these were awesome. The chips were light and crispy the way they should be, and the salsa was fantastic...the hot version was spicy with kick without burning your mouth out. I could easily have sat there and ate two bowls of chips and called it a day. But we decided to try their mexican pizza, which is a tortilla 'hardened' (made crispy, don't think it's tough or anything) and served pizza style with toppings. We had the carnitas 'al pastor' and it was fantastic. The carnitas weren't crispy but they were so, so good, and the red onions on top just complemented it so well. It has barbecue sauce on it but it's such a mild touch it doesn't overpower anything. Thank you Amaya's for such a great experience. Oh yeah - the drinks are just fine and they have a decent (if small) selection of draft beers they will serve cold. They were busy and still did a good job serving us, even going so far as to give us second servings of salsa to go. Great place and we will be back! read more

We were pleased from the time we walked up until we left. Staff was friendly, accommodating, and quite efficient . Granted it was a Wed so not real busy . I wanted to love this place, but I can't even say I like it after having given it two tries. First time I went: weekday lunch, very slow service, dirty/sticky floors, dirty menus. There was a scent of sewage that regularly wafted toward our table. Food was just ok, but I will grant that it was very large portion sizes. Second time I went: weekday work lunch. Slow floor service, but I think there was only one server, and she was busting her a** to handle all the tables, so I can't blame her. It took over half an hour to get our food from the time we placed the order. Some items were missing or orders were otherwise inaccurate. (e.g., one person ordered a side of rice with her meal, which never arrived). My order (Mexi-Cali chicken burrito) was accurate, one of the selling points from the menu being that it included avocado. However, halfway through the burrito, I still hadn't encountered any. There was one small slice, literally no more than three inches long by a half inch thick. Otherwise, just rice, beans, cheese, and chicken. (Lettuce was on the side rather than stuffed in, which is strange, but whatever.) Anyway, I gave it two shots and really wanted to have a local Mexican place to frequent, but this just isn't it. read more

We have only visited Amayas 3 times now and the freshness and combination of ingredients make each dish just pop with flavor. It takes a lot of work in the kitchen to make good food like this and prices are better than fast food joints. The wait staff are just as good making the experience really feel comfortable. Our food was brought hot from the kitchen and we were kept full on drinks during our meal. We will return but I may ride my bike to Amayas to curb the weight gain! read more

The food was very bland. For a Mexican restaurant I expected bold flavor, but was met with plain chicken and lifeless veggies in my burrito. And they were SUPER understaffed for a Friday night.
