I started eating here in the 80s, when a friend from South India took me there. I've been going back regularly ever since. I almost always order the same thing, which is the #2 Combo. It includes perhaps the best Chana Masala I've ever had, a truly remarkable Samosa, a densely delicious semi-savory cake in yogurt, a mix of pickle (lately, they've been adding lemon pickle, which is divine!) and raw onion, a choice of flat breads (we got the Poori), and a pillowy cake floating in a pool of sweet milk. The combo also comes with the classic red/green sauce (tamarind and cilantro[?]), which makes everything taste better. I almost always get a chai tea. The menu is vast, which can feel daunting until you realize that half of it describes the various confections, and savory snacks, on offer in the case. Most are sold by the pound. Be courageous, and try something. If you've never had golob jamun, for example, prepare to have your mind blown. I'm particularly fond of the Chilli Pakora, which is a whole breaded deep fried chili stuffed with seasoned potato. I'm also fond of their spiced cashews. Their mango lassi is very popular, and I'd get it if I weren't so lactose intolerant. This place is super casual. You can order at one of two kiosks, or at the counter. The owner, Mr. Singh, is often there in his elegant red turban, always happy to answer questions. All of the staff is friendly, and everything comes out quickly, brought out on cafeteria trays, and served on paper plates with plastic cutlery. Bussing is self-serve but, if you need anything, just ask. They recently upgraded the tables and chairs, which are quite nice, and even added a few outside for alfresco dining. (We used to bring our dog, and he'd sit outside with us.) Inside, they've gone out of their way to make the place look festive, with brightly colored garlands, and other beautiful decorations. Ambala Sweets & Snacks has reasonable prices, excellent food, great service, and a super casual vibe. Definitely worth a visit! read more
