We had a lovely dinner with friends, and the 4 of us enjoyed our scrumptious dinner in a gorgeous setting. The service was stellar. Everything was just top-notch. We went on very high recommendation from a friend. The ambience is perfect with beautiful view to outside, fire place in winter added charm to the place, seating is comfortable and staff very friendly. It was the food that disappoints a bit! It was all cold & gave feeling of leftover party food (it could be that we entered around 2.00 pm, may be late for buffet lunch). Salad bar was empty, food was cold and un-inviting. Saviour was khadi ( yogurt sauce dish) and cauliflower manchurian, two of my all time favourite. Other two vegetarian dishes I.e Chana, paneer saag was just ok. My son eats meat and he liked his food. Beverages do add great deal of charm to meal. It was dessert that disappointed the most. The saddest Gilian jamun I have ever had! Not sure if it was gajar or lauki halwa but then it was not even worth figuring out! I have always loved the Ambassador and eat there at least twice a year. Eating in the garden or by the fireplace in winter gives you a truly wonderful dining experience. I was hesitant to take my family there for my birthday as they are under new management, but I was thrilled to find it the same. The service was impeccable and the food was excellent. The manager came over and made us feel very welcomed and appreciated. Eight of us had a variety of appetizers and entrees and everyone liked their food. At the end of the meal, the waiter brought a cake out and a gift for me. Such a classy thing to do. I had a wonderful birthday and look forward to another great meal and experience here. read more

I made a reservation but had to cancel due to working late and not feeling 100% When I called to cancel, I was questioned as to why I am cancelling. I was a little taken aback (I do not own an explanation) but I was honest and said I do not feel well. The person on the phone snickered a little (like "yeah, right"). 1.) During COVID, if customers don't feel well, you don't want them in your place. 2.) Every other time I have had to cancel a reservation (about 5 times in my entire adult life, and I have VIP status on OpenTable) the restaurant thanked me for calling to let them know and that they hoped to see me soon. Went for Saturday brunch buffet, left happy and full and a little drunk. When you turn up at an apartment complex, yes, you are in the right place. There's a big, rather dark central room hosting the buffet and drink tables, but really you want to be seated in the garden room. In the summer, the garage door windows are open and it's really pretty spectacular. The food is excellent quality, even served as a buffet. There aren't a ton of options - on our visit, there were two chicken dishes (including tikka masala, of course), tamarind fish, veggie fritters, and some sides - but Saturdays are relatively quiet so it makes sense. Critically, there are unlimited make-your-own drinks, including wine and champagne, red and white sangria, and top shelf vodka. Not actually the best food but fun for an all-you-can-eat AND all-you-can-drink weekend brunch. Call ahead for a reservation since it fills up on the weekends with large groups of college students. Essentially it's $31 per person (including tax) for an Indian buffet. Again, this is not up there on my list for best Indian food, but it's decent enough and there is a lot of it...rice, naan, all types of chicken in sauces, fritters, saag, chickpeas, mango chutney, and so on. Remember to pace yourself... Then there is also a bar where you can make yourself unlimited mimosas and blood marys. We have been to over a dozen Indian restaurants in Maryland and DC, but Ambassador Dining Room meets the challenge well. It is the combination of solid food, professional service, and the setting. The location is just North of Hopkins' Homewood campus on the ground floor of a 1920s apartment building. Wood paneling gives way to an enclosed patio that overlooks a large colorful garden. Weather permitting, they open the windowed overhead garage type doors to invite nature into the restaurant. Fireplaces roaring (given the season) add more ambience. We most enjoy the large selection of dishes on Sunday's buffet offering. Whether ordering off the menu or going to the Sunday afternoon buffet, the total package provides a top experience. read more

Located on the ground floor of a high rise apartment near JHU, you would never know this restaurant existed unless someone recommended it. Rich dark woods, persian rugs and a terrace spilling into a green garden in the back of the restaurant set the tone of elegance and exclusivity. The service was immaculate as our tuxedoed waiter tended to our every need. We started with the meat samosas which were a little greasy and lacked some flavoring but a little sauce solved that problem. As a main course I ordered the Chicken Madras South Indian style curry made with green chillies and coconut milk which wasn't spicy and very creamy. I hate creamy sauces and I love spicy so it wasn't really my thing but I know that's how south Indian cuisine is. My dinner partners were in heaven with their dishes. I've definitely had better Indian food but the serene atmosphere of the open terrace coupled with the Tudor-style interior rounds out the experience. This Uber Indian restaurant is nestled in a quiet street with an additional closed patio (more like a verandah) dining area that opens into a beautiful garden. We went for the lunch around 2:00 pm on a Saturday and enjoyed a quite family meal in a great ambience. Buffet selections are biased for the non-vegetarians - an indication that the place caters for the western palate. Don't expect authentic curry flavors here; however, If you enjoy muted spices then you would like their preparations. Lack of veggie choices on the Buffett was more than made up by very attentive service. The staff offered to augment the Buffet with additional veggie entries from the menu for us. We took up their offer and ordered Kadai Paneer. For breads they offered a good selection of freshly cooked choices. To top it, they also served a couple of freshly fried Samosas. Rice pudding and chocolate cake were the two dessert choices that day. Buffet also included an excellent eliachi (cardamom) tea. I had been going to the Ambassador regularly over the past 15-20 years or so but not much at all recently. We used it as a staple for a long time and always enjoyed the food, service and the beautiful space. I was surprised at the recent changes. The food was good, but served differently than before. Servings were not very large,and there was not enough silver on the table. When dessert was brought,no one produced any extra silver or plates. No one asked if we wanted any. My serious complaint is that the waitress hovered over us,extremely closely,the entire time. She brought her masked face very close to each of us, and to the table in general, seemingly unaware that there was a reason for the mask she was wearing. We were not masked during the meal,of course. This made me extremely uncomfortable. I wish that the waitstaff was more carefully trained. read more

I like to go on a Sunday evening as it is typically not busy and feels like private dining. Service was attentive and food came out timely and hot. Everything we had was very good. There's a good of Indian favorites with options for American breakfast standards like omelettes. For folks that enjoy a casual adult beverage, you're free to play bartender by mixing your own mimosas or Bloody Marys. Everything is fresh, delicious and all you can eat or drink. The mixed meat grill (tandoori chicken, lamb and shrimp) was nearly $30 and it really did not stand out. Mughal Garden's meat dishes are just as good and but less pricey. My girlfriend had palak paneer (spinach, Indian cottage cheese) which had nice spicy flare but just average. We also shared a mixed veggie appetizer in which all the items were surprising under-salted. Finally, the chocolate cake was ok, slightly drier than I desire. We took two friends there for dinner. The weather allowed us to sit in the rear patio which is nice (main room is rather gloomy and could use a real make-over. The food was good (most important) and portions pre-served (no metal serving bowls) were just right, so no one left hungry. The food is very good, but the ambience is unbeatable. This is definitely a hidden gem. It is actually one of the few restaurants that is close to the homewood campus and apartment complex nearby. You have to actually go into an apartment to find this place, and then boom, a very fancy Indian restaurant with old style polite gentlemen, the restaurant also have a very nice view outside (they just refurbished it). I have been here several times for lunch buffet, the price is a little bit higher than the other Indian restaurants, but considering the nice environment and the better selection of dishes (they have real lambs and fish!), I would go there for a nice lunch. Dinner is a little bit different though, it is more pricey and you can only order certain food, but the taste is pretty good. Overall, very nice price to have a quiet, romantic lunch. read more

Not sure how this place has such good reviews, but I'll try to keep mine to the point. It's Monday 7/31/17 during restaurant week. It's a Monday, so it's shouldn't be too busy, well it wasn't. However, the service/server was not very good or attentive, felt a bit rushed. It was a three course meal: I will rate 1-5 (1) being very bad/bland, (5) being well seasoned/delicious 1) meat samosas (appetizer) = 4. It was well seasoned ground lamb, but just 1, so left you wanting more, but good 2) main course - I don't recall the name, but it was a lamb dish with raisins on almonds. The raisins were the best part of the dish. It was beyond bland. It was if you roasted a piece of meat and decided NOT to put a lick of seasoning, not even salt it better. For Indian food/restaurant, I expected a lot better. That was a joke. I've had better food from a college cafeteria. I gave that 1 out of 5 3) dessert was a dry piece of chocolate cake, granted that's not an Indian main stay, but come on - at least try Had a glass of Pinot Noir with dinner, but since they didn't make it, they can't mess it up. Overall, I give it a 2 out of 5, mainly for the wine and appetizer. For the price, I wouldn't go back on or off restaurant week. That was shameful for an "Indian" restaurant. My husband surprise me with brunch on Mother's Day here. It was great although I felt a lil under dressed. It was a surprised had I known I would have research the venue appropriately by reviewing yelp . We were treated divinely. I mean the space is small but everything is extremely done in quality and taste. With that in mind- I asked my husband---ummm how much is his buffet? He said oh, not sure 29.99??? He lied! Our bill was almost $200 since we had the two kids with us. We aren't even buffet type ppl. Two places are usually our max . I was extremely grateful that he thought of me to make reservation. But I secretly hated that he didn't vet the place and price. We should not brought the kids and made it about us. I recommend the place without kids as pricing is high! read more

My lower-rated reviews on Yelp are far and few between, but I had a dining experience at the Ambassador Dining Room that's the worst in recent memory. I feel like potential customers need know about it so that you can save yourself from a poor meal at a fairly high price. "Extremely expensive Indian food?" you may be wondering as you spy the dollar signs on Yelp. I was OK with this, after all, you can't deny the allure of their atmosphere. It's really lovely, especially if you can eat outside overlooking the Ambassador gardens. If only you were eating in a high quality restaurant that lived up to its decor. Some of the best Indian food I've had cost no more than $8 to $12 a plate. I realize not everywhere in the US can be Jackson Heights, Queens but come on. A plate of vegetable curry that costs an average of $18.95 per plate (online menu is not up to date on prices) should be exquisite. Unfortunately, the bhindi pyaaz was anything but. I ordered it extra spicy and what was delivered tasted akin to a frozen entree. Bland, tasteless, overcooked. Another bizarre thing, plates come out with a scoop of your entree, a tiny scoop of plain basmati rice (is there a rice shortage I don't know about?) and a side of either dal or saag (you don't get to pick). I've eaten Indian food all over the world and this was a first for me. None of this would really be a big deal if one could express their dissatisfaction with the food without getting an argument. I rarely if ever send food back to the kitchen, but I just couldn't eat what was placed in front of me. I explained to our waiter that I didn't like the food and could I send it back. He explained that it came out exactly as described on the menu (FYI "Okra, dry-cooked with onions and spices"). A young woman who might have been a manager came over to me and stated without apology, "That's how it's described on the menu." As you can see above, it's barely described on the menu. Besides, I've ordered okra countless times in Indian restaurants and never have I received it looking and tasting the way the Ambassador serves it. I was pretty stunned and didn't even know what to say. I guess I sounded dissatisfied and might have looked a bit annoyed (my bitch face wasn't resting) so she reluctantly offered me something else. At this point I figured that wouldn't be a good idea. Anyway, I was so frustrated that I had lost my appetite. It gets better and by "better" you know I mean worse. After my dining partners finished their food, the first waiter came up to our table and asked my friend's boyfriend, "Can I wrap this up for you?" meaning *my* barely touched plate of food! Before I could even think, I stated, "that's OK. I'm sitting right here. You can talk to me." I realize that was rude and normally I'm anything but, but god was I pissed off. I knew I'd be paying almost 20 bucks for a plate of food that I only had tasted (and all but spat out). Other weirdness: waiters walk over to the table with opened bottles of sparkling wine as if you're being served a complimentary glass (they ask you if you would like another glass. It's just odd). Not to mention, that stuff gets warm fast on a hot summer evening, so it should not be paraded around the patio. Finally, it just gives the wrong impression and is not customary in a higher end restaurant as this one is *pretending* to be. Let's also keep in mind, in a high end restaurant, they'd never argue with you about your food. Or take away a full plate of food and see fit to charge you without apology. Yep. DISGUSTING! A mockery of Indian cuisine! This restaurant is fooling innocent unaware customers by giving them pseudo mashed up garbage served on a platter. Horrific customer service. On Eid, me and my sister decided to get some authentic Indian food. At Ambassador, we ordered the most basic Indian dish on the menu, the chicken biryani. The ghastly mush that was served to us on a platter was appalling. The sloppy chicken biryani was sauteed with tomato ketchup and broccoli. Broccoli?!!!? Broccoli isn't even grown in India. The chicken was a bland, dry boiled cube served on top of the rice. I was so shocked to see my gooey tomato red biryani that I was convinced that she brought out the wrong order. Instead of being apologetic, she says "I'm not sure where you are from, but this is how we've been serving biryani over 20yrs". When I asked the manager if we can switch to another dish, he said "this isn't a testing service". I get it that I'm not white but at least be polite and courteous to your guests. So, I use to really enjoy this place, it always seemed like a treat when I came here in the past, not anymore. Let me explain. I ordered my meal with a medium spice level which had NO spice at all, just bland and it did not even taste good, just edible. So, I explained this to the waitstaff and they got the manager immediately and apologized that my food did not come the way I had wanted. The only good part of that evening was the waitstaff. They were wonderful, but that's about the only nice thing I can say about this restaurant. After a long exhausting work week, I really didn't want to be confrontational and I wasn't until I met the manager. The manager was not pleasant and rude. His excuse as to why my meal came out the way it did, was that his staff in the kitchen doesn't know when the peppers they use will be spicy when they put it in a dish. WTH?! So, that's telling me that his staff in the kitchen does not taste their product before they send it out to their customers. Are you kidding me?! That's a BS excuse and then on top of this, he offers me hot sauce if I want any spice to my meal!! WTH! Are you for real?! That was a first at an indian restaurant! I explained I did NOT want any hot sauce and asked him why at any other Indian restaurant when I order my food the same way, it always comes out the way I want. The only things he offered to do was to take my meal back, but explained to me that it would come out the same way, so why would I want to do that?! Plus, I think he would have done something unethical with my food if I had sent it back. This was the WORST service from management I have ever received!! You offer me hot sauce, apologize but not really. Super rude and defensive! Never coming back here again! And another minus, they gave us even less food then they already did! I'm a huge Indian food fan and lived in India for six months. There are some decent options in the city but this is my favorite. Works really well for delivery in COVID times. Super fresh, everything always tastes just made. Their paneer is soft and creamy not the hard type that some places use that they buy packaged. My husband gets their lamb vindaloo. I was close to writing a lengthy review about why I gave the Ambassador 2 stars, but honestly, it's too much to address. This kitchen has to get their act together. Somebody needs to tell the owner, this is not Baltimore circa 1990, when "Indian" food was a novelty and the customer didn't know better. Bottom line, this is the worst Indian food in Baltimore-this includes the carryouts. The food is dreck. I'll grudgingly give 2 stars because the ambiance and service is excellent. You can have a good experience so long as you overlook the food and the bill afterward (high) because the dining room/patio arguably is the nicest in Baltimore.
