Freas salad and a cold beer

Charming spot in a lovely old house in the Dayton suburbs. A short drive from the USAF museum and we'll worth it. They offer a nice selection of eastern European dishes as well as American classics like the cheeseburger. I highly recommend the Warsaw Medly. Nice selection of wines and draft and bottled beers. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the service was quick and friendly.

This is a charming old school restaurant that evokes the Eastern European enclaves in New York. I've even been to Eastern Europe- quite a while ago, but I'm confident in calling this place authentic. The building is old and well preserved with an interesting history. Tin ceilings, classic hanging lights, lots of dark wood, stained glass. We came late in the lunch time. Service was top notch. Food came quickly and it was all fabulous. They offer turtle soup, which my husband (who is Polish from Milwaukee) loves. He chose a cup in lieu of salad and gave it high marks. In fact he ordered a bowl to take home too. Between us we had potato pancakes, stuffed mushrooms (no breadcrumbs!), Beef Stroganoff, and the Warsaw Medley which included pierogies, stuffed cabbage, a sausage link, and probably the best sauerkraut I've ever tasted. Very different from typical style, and not at all "sour." We loved every bite of every dish. OK, I admit I took home an order of potato pancakes too. Good sized parking lot. Discount for paying cash. Bathroom was sparkling clean. This is the only restaurant of its kind that I've found within 40 miles of my home base (Scary, right?) so I'm pretty ecstatic to find it and that it is SO GOOD. So will I gladly drive 60 miles RT for these pierogies and potato pancakes? You bet, and I hope to do so again real soon.

We went for their Mother's Day brunch and enjoyed a lovely buffet spread! The waitstaff was super kind and the building itself is very pretty.

AlLocated in a downtown Dayton suburb, this German restaurant is a bit of a throwback, but fun ambience and good food and service.

The place was busy, but we were seated quickly, even though it was a Friday. It took a while to get a server, which was a theme for the night, but it did eventually happen. There was live music upstairs and outside. But no guarantee of non-smoking outside. We chose inside and were seated within 2 feet of another table. A loud, political table. Ugh. Not the restaurant's fault, other than putting tables so close together. I had the Szekely Goulash, while decent, the sauce overwhelmed the other flavors. I understand the idea behind a strong flavor, but this was too much. My wife had stuffed cabbage and unlike my goulash, her's was bland. Her born in Poland grandmother would not have been pleased. We did have some tasty potato cakes for an appetizers. They were decent, not Izzy's, but the what can really compare? Overall, kind of disappointing. We won't be back.

I always get their French onion soup, which is one of my favorites around town. We also asked for bread, it used to be they would automatically bring you bread, and then they changed it to you can only get bread service if you ask for it, and then we were told that they are not supposed to bring you bread if you only get soup. That's a real disappointment.

The food was tasty and very filling. Service was fast and friendly. The decor was very authentic, they absolutely have gone to great lengths to capture the German look and feel of the place. I'm not up in Newport very often, but I definitely will be back and try some more of the menu. Maybe I'll try some of those pretzels next time, the next table over got some and they looked really good.

He ordered a pretzel for his starter which he gave a thumbs up. He described it as having a fermented sourdough taste which he really enjoyed. His main meal was a Hofbrauhaus Hot Brown which he described as very rich and dense definitely filling. I tried his dish and was very confused by the mix of flavors. I ordered the Rueben balls which I thought were nicely crisp on the outside but overly soft on the inside but it did taste very nice with the dip provided. I decided on the Munich Sampler which came with 2 sausages, a crispy fired pork chop with potatoes and sauerkraut. The pork chop was overcooked and dry although smothered with a mushroom gravy. The sausages were tasty but nothing special. Both sides were so heavily seasoned with vinegar I could not get through them. My husband even thought the sauerkraut tasted too vinegary but he loved the potatoes, polishing off what I had left on the plate. The service was great; prompt and polite. I would say if you like German cuisine this is the place for you! Quite authentic flavors. Just not my favorite.

Happy Hour specials: $4 Hefe Weizen(wheat beer), $5 Fries with Bier Gravy, Lager battered Chicken Tenders and Garlic pretzel bites. I'm in! Everything came out in reasonable time and I'm not going to describe every bite, but I was in heaven. The Bier gravy fries were special. Garlic Pretzel bites were crazy good. Chicken tenders were seasoned perfectly and the sauces (honey mustard and some sorta bourbon bbq) had me cross dippin and dunkin. I basically ordered dive bar food items, but it was the best I've had especially for $5 each. Washing it down with a wheat beer just kicked it over the fence. I even left room for dessert which I never do. Boston Cream Puff. OMG. The custard was lighter than most but I'm glad it was. It didn't last 2 minutes.
