Ambrosia is my favorite restaurant in Eugene. Every time my parents are in town, this is our go-to place. This restaurant is also favorited by many of my friends and any time we have a special occasion, this is the first place that comes to mind. For an italian restaurant with amazing food, the prices can't be beat. The service is always top-notch and they go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and served throughout your time there. Two years later and the same thing has happened... we arrived for our reservation a few minutes early to a nearly empty restaurant and told that we would be seated only at 5:30 on the dot and to take a seat to wait. When asked why, the hostess informed us that due to a large party (the only party in the place was about 6 people) already seated it would be terribly hard on the wait staff and kitchen to seat us before our reservation time. I struggled to make any sense of this, as a woman and her daughter who came in right after us without a reservation were immediately seated. How does making a reservation wait while seating walk-ins help the kitchen? Is there not enough kitchen staff in the first place? Why aren't the customers as important as the wait and kitchen staff? Why is there no manager or a manager who actually manages the place? When it became obvious to the hostess that we were not pleased she grudgingly seated us with a snide "You are being seated 5 minutes early!" The food itself was delicious. I had Tradizionali Penne con Salsiccia, my husband had a calzone. The wait staff was attentive throughout the meal. However, as we neared the end of dining, the wait staff bustled our plates away whilst mid-bit. My dad had to snatch his piece of pizza as the plate was being removed. First they don't want to seat us, then they want us to hurry up and leave. I just don't understand what has happened to Ambrosia, and with so many other options to choose from where the staff is actually happy to seat parties, five minutes early or not, it will be a while before we return. read more

I went Friday night 9/10/10 with friends for a birthday. The service was poor. There was stuff floating in our fresh water. They changed it out 4 times. After the first time you would think you would look before setting it on the table. After having it changed the 3rd time most of the table opted out. The food was just ok but everything else was sub standard. When the bill came. There was 5 couples and the woman couldnt figure out how to seperate our credit cards. I had my first "official" drink here when I turned 21, so I have a fond memory of the place in that respect. It proved to be a wise choice. They have house infused vodka's that are pretty tasty. They also have quite a good wine list. I would recommend the place for some classy drinking. Their food is just ok though, so go get drunk. read more

I've been going to Ambrosia for over 20 years and I've always rated it at 5 stars and told everyone to go there. However, over the last year or so, the food quality has gone way down. I've had to even return my last two entrees. My other friends concur. We really want them to continue but we won't be returning until there is an improvement in the food. read more

I've lived in Eugene just over a year, and I'm sad I've never been here before. I spent two years stationed in Alaska and I'm always hesitant about ordering fish after catching it myself and having it same day, I was wrong. We had dinner with another couple last week here. The food was good and the service was excellent. We sat in the back room, all the tables have straight backed wooded chairs without any padding. I had to tryand I had to try several different chairs until I found one that was comfortable for me to sit in. Even then after sitting on the chairs for about an hour we were not inclined to linger and talk. We all needed to get up and move about. Three of us dined here on a Thursday evening when it wasn't jammed and appeared to have enough staff. But despite that, we were kept waiting for a table, refused our preference to dine outside ("it would take a very long time to seat you outside"), seated upstairs instead, kept waiting to order, then kept waiting more than an hour for food. A "free" side salad for the three of us to share was offered, but no reduction of the bill. The pasta dishes were heavy on cheese and short on flavor. The scallops were ok. My son and I had dinner last night. Our exceptional server David waited on us once again. He was charming and very good at his job as always. I had the beef stroganoff. The beef was so tender. It melted in my mouth. I also had the steamed clams which was also delicious. My son had a margarita pizza. I would order that again. He also had the seafood ravioli which was amazing. My only thought on this dish was that the portion was a little small for the price. I also thought that there should have been some seafood on the plate as oppose to just in the ravioli. Wish I could give no stars. I took out my employees for a Christmas Dinner there. We're not a terribly big group (10 people) but big enough to meet the minimum gratuity standards. Undercooked food, no service, had to beg someone to offer us desert (after the check had been dropped at our table), and had to go down a flight of stairs to request a drink refill. After having been in Eugene for almost 7 years, we thought we should finally give Ambrosia a try--we hadn't heard much about it, either positive or negative, and now I think I understand why. First, the positive: -The ambience is warm and nicely old-school. I love all the brick, as well as the two upstairs eating spaces. These provide a nice sense of intimacy. -Our waiter was perfectly friendly and efficient. -The cocktail--the Tesoro Elissa--I ordered was lovely, both in presentation and in flavor. I wish we had all the ingredients to make it at home, as I'm not sure it alone is enough to entice me to give this place another try, because unfortunately, most of our experience was overwhelmingly negative. The negative: -The other staff we experienced ranged from mediocre to just plain rude. We first sat at the bar to have a drink while we perused the dinner menu in order to decide whether to have dinner there. We also wanted to order an appetizer, but the bartender did a pretty good job of ignoring us once she made us our cocktails. When we finally got her attention, we ordered the bruschetta. A couple of minutes later, a gentleman who might have been a regular asked her for the happy hour menu. We hadn't realized it was happy hour, so when we were able to get the bartender's attention again, we asked to see the menu as well. When she handed it to us, she said she didn't give us one in the first place because the portions were smaller and not enough for two people. My guess is she forgot to give us the happy hour menu in the first place and tried to cover up this oversight by making up a fairly weak rationalization. Or she did she think we don't understood the concept of happy hour, including the fact that portions are usually smaller? Either way, not the most professional service on her part. Despite this, we decided to give their dinner a try and asked the bartender if we should settle up with her before moving to a table. She said yes, and we expected that she might inform the hostess that we would like a table. It was quite early in the evening, so none of the staff was particularly busy. She didn't communicate with the hostess though (not a big deal, but still...), so we went to the hostess stand ourselves. When we told her we would like a table for two, she asked if we had checked in yet. Huh? We thought that was what we were doing. She then led us to the rear upstairs section and waved vaguely in the direction of a couple of tables. When I asked which one, she impatiently said "The one with the menus." We later watched as she led a couple of older couples to a four-top and ROLLED HER EYES at them behind their backs as they took their seats. Seriously, does she think other diners can't see her? Her entire attitude was that of a spoiled pre-teen being forced against her will to deal with annoying grown-ups. -Sadly, the food was also less than impressive. Much if it seems to be straight out of the 80's--lots of sun dried tomatoes and gorgonzola, and pretty much every pasta sauce appeared to have cream in it. We would have been okay with a seriously old-school American Italian menu, the type of thing you can imagine Frank Sinatra enjoying. But clinging onto 1980's classics? Not so much. Still, if the service hadn't been so rude, we might be willing to give dinner another try sometime in the future, if simply for the ambience, the likes of which are hard to find elsewhere in Eugene. read more

It is with heavy heart that I write this review for such a place that has been in my life for many, many years. First off the decor is and has always been the same, antique furnishings, old style bar and cozy and not so cozy seating. As the years have passed this once hot spot of Eugene has been replaced by up and coming food with restaurants willing to change for the better... things have changed, while the once spot on drinks and fantastic food have been replaced by staff members shoving diners into the tiniest of spot in this very large restaurant. Why Ambrosia? Diners don't like to have servers passing by at each table back and forth, back and forth... no peace of meal, or able to hold a conversation without hearing from the next table. You have all that room, let your diners enjoy the ambiance, not what the next table is ordering. Now the the food, hmmm what a disappointment to see lovely pizza, pasta, and bread fall to the wayside of the chiefs/staff on duty just because such and such sports was playing at the bar holding their attention... burnt calazone to the left of me, burnt calazone right in-front of me. Over priced and uncared for food... it's gonna be sad to see this one go, but unfortunately it has become a stagnant pond of old reviews and thinks it's still the cats meow. Pass. read more
