I have used American Airlines many times, I recently used them for a trip to the Dominican Republic. My experience was so mediocre that I decided to not even give them the benefit of a review (even if it is a negative one) However, my mom just told me about HER trip back to the states and I have no choice but to let you know the poor service she received. To some extent I feel she was discriminated. This is the deal, nine of us flied to the Dominican Republic last month. We all flew AA and each of us had a ridiculous layover of at least five hours. We know flights are not easy from Texas, so we accepted it and just went on our itineraries. Now, this is the messed up part. When my flight back landed in Miami we were informed that we would have go to pick up our luggage and recheck it in. Also, anything liquid purchased at the airport in the DR would have to be checked in as well. Now, if you have ever entered the country through Miami, you know it is a jungle in there! People are everywhere and no one knows where to go... what's more.. when I asked one of the stewardess where the luggage would be... instead of looking in the computer she just suggested I follow the signs. I was tired and decided to not bother answering her appropriately. Picked up my luggage, passed by customs and dropped off my luggage.. all in about 30 minutes! Now I understand why they need the 5 hour layover. My flight was delayed about 1/2 an hour, but I was just happy to get the hell home! Now, a few weeks later, my mom was traveling alone. She was bringing a wooden doll and a carry-on, in addition to her two allowed checked in bags. In the Dominican Republic they did not have any issue with her carry ons, however, in Miami they decided that they were both too big for the plane. My mom was informed that her carryons were too big and she needed to check them in. This is after she had done all the luggage pickup, custom etc. Why are the rules different, for the same airline in two different airports?! My mom made her way all the way back to check in, which is a least a 20 minute walk. As she was going up the stairs with the luggage, she fell and was rolling down the stairs. If not for a guy who helped her stop she would have hurt herself pretty badly. My mom now has some scratches on her arms and he body hurts, but she is thankfully OK. I am very unhappy that they have such little consideration for people. I am sure they could have checked her stuff in at the gate. Not only that, but they made her pay an extra $100 to check her carry on in. Her flight was delayed 3 hours in Dominican Republic and she (together with all the other passengers) had to wait three hours in the plane before they finally departed. I don't know how AA expects to get repeat business offering such service. I personally will make AA my last resort when flying anywhere. If something is not done by their CEO's to correct the lack of customer service, they will fail. No one offered to accommodate my mom's luggage in the plane, and they tried to charge her an additional fee for the doll. That's when the supervisor came in and allowed the doll to be checked in for free. I bet you if she would have been flying first class they would have more than accommodated her. read more

On Friday 10/27/23 my husbands flight with American Airlines was cancelled by the airline. Then the airline automatically rebooked him on a flight for Saturday 10/28/23. He called the airline that Friday and let them know he could not make that flight, he needed to be in Missouri for a wedding, and he was going to completely miss the event by the time the flight they booked him on arrived, and there were no earlier options. The woman he spoke to said no problem, it's cancelled. So we called on Sunday 10/29/23 to work out the details of the refund/ travel credit and they told us that would not be possible because it was marked in their system as a 'no show' not a cancellation. So then we tell them we spoke to someone Friday who said everything was cancelled out. The representative proceeded to argue, call us liars, and talk down to us in a very condescending way. And then she refused to tell us her name afterward. She was rude, unsympathetic, and totally refused to help us. Most hopeless airlines. I had to fly from Dallas DFW airlines to Houston Hobby airlines on12/26/2021 at 10:30 am flight. Got email confirmation that flight was on time before leaving Hotel. Spend $20 on taxi to reach hotel. Flight is delayed by 30 minutes then by 2 hours they changed gate then by another 4 hours. Made me miss my work got chewed by my boss thanks to them spend another $12 to get something to eat had to request friend to pick up who spend his own time gas and $2 for airport entry to pick me up spend another $48 to pick up my own car from Hobby Airport in total landed up paying more than $250 for flight of this airlines which I had to cancel. Then to ask for refund there is no human being just website to process refund. If you have crew shortage then you need to hire more folks make sure they are fully vaccinated and follow all precautions. I will never fly on this expensive airlines ever but rather fly more organized cheaper Southwest Airlines where I never had any such issues at all. HORRIBLE! I will try my best to stay away from this airline. First off, they charge a checked in luggage fee for Cancun and that's considered as international flight!?! WTF...it doesn't matter if Cancun is only 3 hrs away from Houston. Second, when I checked in online the day before, they only show preferred and main cabin seats (additional $10-30 each seat) and so I was forced to book those seat thinking if i don't the seats will run out... and I had to pay 130 total for my boyfriend and I. Then I did some research (wish I had done before paying the additional fee) and those seats are for the special elite members, and that if I was to check in at the airport or the day of departure there would be more available seats (and those preferred and main cabin seats will become free). Word to the wise ... avoid American Eagle especially into LAX and the American Eagle terminal. Spent 3.5 hours on a flight into LA with no wifi, tvs, food or alcohol. Note sure why since our United flight to the initial leg to pur destination had food, wifi, tvs and beer and wine. So then landed at this terminal only having to walk through covered walkways to arrive at a packed zoo of a terminal and a huge line up with a 50 minute wait for a shuttle that was packed shoulder to shoulder to the main terminal. It was most horrible experience that I has while traveling domestically. The seats are so close to your knee it is not even funny, and lucky I am not that tall. But beside that the flight attendants are like they don't want to be there and you as a customer just a bother to them. They are not there to serve you but just to babysit you. The airplanes are in a sad shape there was delay after delay and gate changes like a roulette wheel. For a elderly person they don't offer any kind of assistance to move to many gate changes. Again like I said they think that we are a bother to them they get paid the same. My flight to Utah was a night mare from hell. Took me about 12 hours after all the delay. I will never again take another flight with American Airline. But they don't really care. They spend all the big bucks making the video about how good they look. Spent all day today trying to fly to Houston. Both legs of flight were American planes, both had 30 min departure delays. Ultimately took twice the planned time to fly the trip - American blamed weather. I blame horrible management. On the last leg the 2.5 hour flight turned into 5 hours due to diverting to alternate airport for fuel - we were offered one bottle of water and one package of pretzels. First experience with American Airlines and it sucked. The seats provide no back support at all. Then, my husband checked a BRAND NEW small rolling suitcase on our return flight from Punta Cana with a few keepsakes in them and it survived the first leg from Punta Cana. Once we got to Miami, shit went south. We returned to Houston's baggage claim at IAH to a ripped bag, damaged clothing, broken keepsakes AND to top it off, my cousin (who was traveling with us) had a watch stolen. Let's just say I'm more than pissed. They won't get any more of my money. If I could give zero stars I would. This is the worst airline I've ever dealt with. I flew American Airlines because I was taking my son on a college visit to Lubbock. He's being recruited by Texas Tech. We had plans for him to sit in on some meetings before and after practice. Then the coach had invited us for dinner and a baseball game. Our flight was scheduled to leave at 10:24 AM. Before takeoff the pilot announced that there were technical difficulties and the plane had to go back to the hanger. We were then delayed two, three, then four hours. Finally we were told that they could put us on a 6:30 pm flight to Dallas where we would have to layover for two hours then get on a flight to Lubbock. We would arrive in Lubbock at 11:40 PM. While waiting in line a supervisor came up to us and told us to go to another line when it was almost our turn. So then we went to a longer line that had two people helping. Then when the line gets shorter one person left. And we stood there in line for another 40 minutes. It was like pulling teeth to get them to upgrade us to better seats. Avoid American Airlines at all cost. Fly Southwest or someone else. Oh and by the way.....two planes broke down at the same time. They had to get parts from United..... unbelievable. If you fly 1st class and need to change your flight they will charge a change fee and not just the difference between the flights. Most all the other airlines will not charge a change fee because of COVID and for first class or premium seating, never. Also in 1st class if they feel like serving they might, so don't expect it. I've never had such an abysmal flight experience. First time flying with AA out of LAX- was a great experience. Great, friendly agents at the desk and flight was good for my kitties. I did so much research and preparation before switching to AA for the comfort of my cats and my peace of mind knowing they're safe with me and not alone with a stranger who I don't know (ie cargo or pet hotels). IAH is where AA blew it. The supervisor made sure to throw her weight around by scrolling through her phone and relaying false or contradictory policy information and an overall subjective argument. I know this because since she was so persistent on the regulations on Policy, which mind you I had looked over several times AND contacted THREE reps before booking the flight on the terms of flying with pets to avoid this very situation- I went back to read it over and looked through it again tonight and noticed where she was giving me flawed information. I requested a manager and she gave me a confusing reason as to why a floor manager would not be able to help me. For someone in such a high position having to Google for policies while also making the Policy the backbone of her argument on why my cats are suddenly an issue for my return flight is ludicrous. I love my cats with all my soul but she made it seem like I was causing them to suffer which really hurt me. She said she does not have pets so I don't think she could even begin to understand the impact of her treatment towards me and my babies.... One of the cats, namely the one she had the most issues with is my ESA. I did not renew his letter since I had to pay for both cats in one kennel anyways and had no problems on my flight out. She suggested to get my DR to fill out the AA ESA form but he was not in available for the holiday. How could I have possibly anticipated this? This inconvenience she created not only caused me and my cats emotional stress, it also caused me a great amount of unnecessary expenses. She says that her letting me board could make her lose her job. Is my job also not important then? There is much more to the story but it's this alone that proves incompetence and emotional power play. Please look elsewhere if flying with pets are a concern or considering AA in general because dealing with the subjectivity of an agent's temperament at the time you stand in front of them is a truly awful experience. These negative reviews and overall low satisfaction rating is proof from real people to turn away from this airline. I will never fly AA again. read more

Flew first class from Philadelphia to Houston on 6/6/21. This was the worse experience I've had on an airplane. I have never flew first class so I expected a little more then I would in the main cabin. Boy was I wrong. The flight attendant was rude and to busy playing on her phone. They offered a single bag of potato chips and a warm beer. She came around one time to take a drink order and one time to offer a bag of chips. We received our two beers and both were warm and not drinkable. This was a complete waste of money and I am not looking forward to my first class flight coming up in July to Florida. Save yourself the money and fly the main cabin, first class is highly overrated and a monumental waste of money. read more

Really wish I could give 0 stars! Never before have i had such terrible service. So, I bought a ticket to go out of town and unfortunately due to circumstances beyond my control I was unable to make my flight yesterday. Due to airline rules the airline offered to put me on standby for thr next flight but i would have missed my connecting commute. Now this isnt a problem, ON ANY OTHER AIRLINE, because as I have done before I would just use the credit value of the missed flight to buy another ticket and pay the difference... Oh no, this is not the case on AA. On this airlune im only allowed to use the credit if Im going to the same destination. So when I found another flught leaving the next day was half the cost of the flight i had I thought I was set. Nope, AA said I needed to pay a $200 modification charge (wait, thats more than my previous ticket $121 and new ticket $61) Another $200 to get me on a flight i already paid for and moreover is cheaper to get too today? Who does that?? So now im out my $1k trip and ill miss a wedding --- Thanks American Airlines Understand I havent been on this airline in approx 10yrs and couldnt remember why... I remember now! If I could place less then a star I would. We have yet to receive our luggage because they sent it to the incorrect destination. We have made multiple contacts with them trying to get our luggage sent to the correct destination and now going on 5 days into our vacation that is only a 7 day trip and they still can't get us our luggage. They apologize for the inconvenience and suggest to repurchase the items that is in the bags. This airline is a joke, please run far,far far away from them. The flight for my children was cancelled and rebooked because of the airline check in's mistakes. One child is 15 and one is 11, so we payed for the unaccompanied minor fee for the flight assistant. But when we checked in with the agent at IAH named Bernard, he didn't say anything about having to fill in a form or needing the parent to go in the gate also but just gave us the tickets. Then when my children arrived at the gate, the manager named Greg said how they couldn't fly because the parent wasn't there and they didn't have any paperwork even though it was the front desk's negligence and carelessness. They also said how we arrived late even though we were already at the gate few minutes before the boarding time. We were also waiting at the front desk for check in for more than one hour even at the priority line. When we went front desk, the agent Bernard even claimed about how we didn't pay for the fee and didn't say how my children was flying alone even though I told them already and it clearly shows on the file that we payed for the fee, and their ticket showing that it was the ticket for unaccompanied minors. At the end, they had to change my nonstop flight to an transferring flight on another day. I want an compensation fee for our time wasted, the inconvenience caused because of the mistake that the airline check in made, the change of our ticket from nonstop to connecting flight, gas, parking, and the additional time wasted because of the whole situation. The next Monday they called me back , they will only pay for each child $100 of the credit. It's very not fair and reasonable . read more

Ok, so these money grabbing b**tards had only one review and it was a five star at that, time to bring the average down a bit. This was my first experience on AA so I'm really giving them a 2.5 star effort but jeez, they coulda tried a bit harder to get my good vote. Lets get the good points out the way first. 1. My bags did arrive, and that is a major good point seeing as though that is normally what gets my hump with airlines. 2. I did not plummet out of the sky to my immediate death and was able to walk away safely from the aircraft. I class that as quite a major plus when it comes to air travel so kudos to AA for getting that one right. The negatives are too many to list and may just sound as though I'm bitching, however if there is one thing yelp has taught me it is how to bitch! A 2 hour 45 min delay is not really cool and one of the longest delays I have had to put up with. $6 for a G & T, jeez man, you already got the best part of $500 off me and now you gonna keep shafting me with drink charges? Not once during my whole trip did anyone such as the captain, trolley-dolley or the token overly camp flight attendant apologise for what was almost an additional 4 hours on top of my travel time due to catching even later connections. Bastards! Anyway, unfortunately due to my location, America, I can see me travelling American Airlines quite a bit more in the future. Remember the t.v. commercial for another airline where they claimed they removed 1 row of seats from every plane to make more room in the cabin for their customers? This weekend I found out where the surplus of seats went: American Airlines. I suggest they change their name to Hobbit Air. The flight crew were friendly but like bigfoot you didn't see them often and when you did it was fleeting. The pilots were competent, they shuttled you safely to your destination. Since I got such a great deal on the tickets I really have nothing to bitch about. It was such a non-experience that I am left feeling ambivalent towards AA (or should I say HA). read more

I flew out of IAH on American Airlines on a recent Wednesday morning. Everything was pretty straightforward, and aside from a last minute gate change, uneventful. When considering some of my past experiences with American Airlines, "uneventful" can be a good thing. I arrived at this airport without a boarding pass and there was no line at the self-service kiosks so I was able to print one quickly, there was only a short line at the TSA screening and signage was ample to help find the gate. As mentioned above, about 30 minutes before our scheduled departure they did announce a gate change (minor, as the gate they moved us to was directly adjacent to the original). The only oddity I experienced was that, after calling "Group 1" to board, they called any and all passengers to board who could fit their carryon under their seats, regardless of their boarding group number. I've only experienced this once before (with another airline) and in my experience, it usually causes those people in later groups to board first, and they then invariably take those items that are supposed to fit under the seat (the whole reason for their boarding early) and promptly place them in the overhead bins, thus defeating the purpose. Beyond that and a fair amount of turbulence a few times during this flight, everything was pretty standard, and they got us to our destination about 10 minutes ahead of schedule. read more

Ok so I never thought my very first review on Yelp would be about an airline...however-something AMAZING happened to me last week while in Houston. First off-I have to say that in the past, I would call my experience traveling with American Airlines to be mediocre at best. To be fair-traveling these days on any airline just isn't generally a pleasant experience. After spending 3 long days in Houston, I arrived at Hobby airport to discover that my flight leaving Houston was late, meaning I would BARELY make my connection in Dallas. If I did make my Dallas connection, my bag most certaily would not. I was not able to check my bag because I had 4 items that were not TSA/Security approved. I considered throwing them away, but was torn because in total they were worth around $100. While I'm contemplating what my next move will be, the agent printing my boarding pass simply said "Honey just give those to me, I'll put them in my pocket and carry them to the gate for you." SHOCK-WHAT??? Does this actually happen? Have you ever heard of such of thing? I wanted to cry. So I put them in a small plastic bag, gave them to this saint of a woman, she put them in her pocket, I passed through security, and met her at the gate where she delivered my goods. I thanked her over and over and over again, and she smiled and just said "no problem." I've NEVER in my life encountered something like this. What a nice thing to do!! So-American Airlines, thank you for bending the rules. You've got a passenger for life and I'll definitely pay it forward! read more

They should take cues from Untied or Continental on how to run a good domestic airline business..one time I couldn't believe this..I had checked in 1.5 hrs ago, and had 20 minutes until takeoff when I arrived at the gate (got stuck in security) the gate was SHUT and the flight had taken off! and, the lady on the adjacent counter didn't even try to get me on, just gave me another ticket...WTF??? and, the next connection, was delayed by 40 minutes as they kept trying to pursuade ppl to get off the flight for $200 voucher (lame) as it was oversold..WAY TO GO LOSERS!!
