Below is my letter to American Airlines Customer relations department. What kills me, is this entire thing could have so easily been avoided..... Good afternoon American Airlines Customer Relations, I'm writing this note to complain about your policy regarding door closure to the jet way 10 minutes before the posted flight time. I walked up to the gate at least 5 minutes before the posted flight time and the gate agent, Zachary Alvarez, would not let me on. He was like a little unsympathetic robot telling me over and over that they stopped letting passengers board 10 min before flight time. Now I have to spend another 6 hours waiting on standby to see if I'll actually get on a later flight. I literally stood there in disbelief for 5 minutes or more, watching as they closed up the plane. Zachary put me on the standby list for the next flight out, but it would have been so easy for him to pick of the phone and at least see if the flight crew would let me board. I even paid extra for an exit row, and I guess that money is now gone.... Unbelievable!!! I know the guy is only doing his job, but what ever happened to customer service??? Doesn't' your company realize how dramatically you are affecting someone's life when you don't show a little grace here and there?? Not that I really expect it to change a single thing at American Airlines, but I have every intention of blogging about this and complaining to everyone I know. The worst airlines I have ever used in my lifetime. Will never ever board on to it again. They treat us like we are traveling for charity. I was there 45 minutes prior to the boarding area, and they said checkin is closed and for that reason I had to board next flight. I have a kid and had hard time for the next flight. They would have let me know the alternatives if checking bag is consideration to board my flight, I would have picked my luggage in next flight and boarded this flight on time. Don't they have common sense to guide it. Secondly, the lady near the gate keep saying " I am in stand by " as I am boarding in the next flight since I missed the earlier one. She keep saying the term when I was trying to confirm the seat. What in the world standby means? I have paid money for my flight. None of the airlines in my life time have used such word for boarding the next flight, makes me feel low about myself infront of others. They should give some training. And it took a long time to hand over my baby stroller near the gate and pilot was courteous enough to bring it on his own seeing I waited for long time. Most importantly, the crew I mean the flight attendant gave me wrong instruction for picking up my luggage as gate 9, instead it was gate 4. Holy cow ! I waited a long in wrong gate checking for my bag. My worst experience altogether. I will never board even if someone gives my free ticket. Good bye American Airlines ! read more

I waited over 40 minutes for my checked luggage to arrive here tonight. American is only working one ground crew so they don't deliver your luggage from the flight you arrived on until they turn around the aircraft you flew in on by loading the new flights luggage and then they push the aircraft away from the gate....THEN they deliver your luggage. Total wait time is usually 45 minutes. Very poor customer service to make you wait that long for your luggage. You should see all of the people waiting around the carousel for over 40 minutes. read more

American Airlines was never my airline of choice for the many years that I have been flying from Houston (IAH) to multiple locations (mainly Florida) in the US. However, since the UA/Continental merger, American is now the airline I primarily fly. I may not always love them, but they do earn my business. I've reviewed them before, and they have now earned an extra star because they have made some improvements since my first several flights with them. Website for flight booking: American's site is easy to navigate. Multiple flights are offered to your city of choice (albeit most do fly through DFW) with a variety of different fares, and each time I've needed to book a flight, American's fares were consistently the lowest with the most options. Once you choose a flight, outgoing and return legs are set up in a "tab" format so that you can quickly see times available for departure and return. It's easy to pick your seat at the time of purchase, knowing that you don't have to hassle with that later. Booking as early as possible does give you more of a chance to grab those "no-frills" seats that don't cost extra; I have gotten trapped by American, though, as I'm almost finished booking an entire flight itinerary and find that my last leg has only the "premium" (extra-cost) seats available. Aircraft: AA's newer aircraft are nice, with more comfy leather seats, interactive screens on the back of each headrest that are capable of using your own headphones and adequate legroom (even in the cattle-car back section). However, on those newer aircraft, we did encounter a seat where the screen was completely inoperative, so of course for the longest part of our journey, hubby had no screen to watch other than a constant spinning icon that read "preparing to load data." AA's older aircraft, however, contains those scratchy old tweed-type seats with backrests that don't recline very well and screens that are dispersed from under the overhead bins every 6 rows or so (and invariably some sort of boring, generic sitcom is broadcast). Leg room on these older planes has been whittled away as well, as there are now charging stations at every seat, so it seems the electric box now takes up about a 12" by 4" section underneath each seat. Beware of that if you're traveling with an animal in a carrier or need the extra legroom so your knees don't cramp or your toes don't go numb. Travel/On Time: Boarding is still convoluted and disorganized. But, all of our most recent flights departed precisely on time and landed on time. Recent other travels on AA were the same: on schedule. I like that. Courtesy: Every AA employee that we encountered recently was friendly and helpful. They now even have a decent beverage service, which they served with a smile! I also saw multiple attendants assisting other passengers with their luggage, particularly older folks and parents with young children. Since we never check luggage, I cannot report on their ability to get your luggage to your destination. Website for check-in/boarding passes: As if AA hasn't already extracted enough money from your wallet, checking in is a perpetual sales pitch to upgrade for every possible thing imaginable, from first class seating to extra FF miles to better coach seats - all, of course, for more money. It takes quite a bit of perseverance to find the button on each page that lets you continue to check in without changing anything and FINALLY get to where you can print or email your boarding passes. What a hassle, and a real chore! Overall, I haven't minded flying American of late; I just wish that they'd give us Houstonians a break and not have us fly up to DFW before we fly anywhere else. Their prices are great, I am satisfied with their service, but I dream of trimming my seven-hour journey back down to a little over two hours, which is what it would be if I flew to my destination direct. read more

I have never dealt with a worse business in my entire life. I would give them zero stars if I could. I could not believe how inappropriate and unprofessional the staff at American Airlines is. Sonya, a worker who works at the check in counter, was incredibly rude to me when I attempted to check in. I will spare Yelp the details of my pathetic conversation with her. I also heard an employee, a short Asian woman named Maureen, completely berate a customer when asked a question. I have zero idea how American Airlines stays in business (I guess, it really doesn't) when it has complete idiots like Sonya and Maureen working for it. I will never, ever fly this airline again. Very disappointed. They canceled the flight and put me on a flight for the next day. I am losing a day at by hotel and losing my tour. I won't get any refunds and American Airlines days call the 800 number to see if we could do anything. The crew are basically computerized to repeat only one sentence, we don't help in person anymore. Waiting on the phone for 3 hours with no end I. Site to anyone picking up my call.... Why are American planes always so dirty? The seats, seatback pocket, tray-tables - everything. I would never leave trash and make a mess for the next person to deal with... I however am a Virgin America kind of girl and I guess a different kind of traveler. The limited experiences I've had with AA are not favorable. There's always a delay and flight attendants are rude and obnoxious (there's no need to scream at us) which to me symbolizes a general discontent with their job situation (and again with the company as a whole). A year or two ago, AA was recently fined big-time for letting travelers carry-on too much baggage so now they're grade A assholes about the whole '1 carry-on and 1 personal item' rule. So even if you have to stuff your laptop into your roll bag, do it or they'll make you gatecheck and then charge you for it. One good thing: AA has a nonstop flight from LAX to MCO which I tend to take during the holidays to see the inlaws. It's a hectic start to a hectic week (see reference to inlaws) but at least I don't have to change planes. read more

Horrible experience this morning on flight to miami... horrible service on this flight today... Southwest and open seating rock!!!! In a row with 3 people and there's an open seat behind us... guy next to us wants to sit there and we want him to sit there... damn assigned seats... what is this? Kindergarten? Worst Airline, hands down!! I sit on a plane for over an hour only to deplane. They are having technical troubles! They say to,"check back" at the new boarding time, which they texted me as well. I come back at the new boarding time and they say the flight left 20min earlier. AA457 flight from Denver to Phx. What's even better is the lady behind the counter, who wasn't even the one helping me, gets all sarcastic saying, "they made an announcement sir!!". Her name was Mellisa McSherry. She gets the American Airlines costumer assistance FAIL. How do I know this isn't her first time!!! Worst experience I have ever had!!! Delay for lack of crew. Then delayed for lack of members in check in stand. The merger with US Airways has given American and excuse to toss the customers around expecting someone else to resolve the issue. The fact that if you are flying out of LAX and you have to walk to the terminal in the building and then jump on another shuttle to a remote terminal is really annoying. And the lack of communication about it was worst. I will never fly American again. Do yourself a favor and pay extra for a different airline. read more

Checked in for flight online on the night before flight. Arrived in ample time prior to 8 AM flight, Houston to Miami. Got in line to check in luggage, which took nearly an hour. By the time I got to kiosk, message on screen stated that I missed luggage check-in time by 2 minutes as it's got to be checked in at least 45 minutes prior to flight. Was told to get in full service line where I waited another 30-40 min. Was told I would be placed on standby for later flight. Then the AA rep asked where my luggage went and I said I had no idea as I had placed it next to the counter where it gets tagged. Another knucklehead employee had quickly snatched it, put on conveyer belt (untagged) so efforts to locate my luggage were not successful. Left counter feeling quite unsettled that my luggage was already lost. I was the last person called from standby for the later flight and just as I was told my seat number and walking down the aisle of the plane I was called back, told it was a mistake! Turns out there was an American Airlines employee who came in behind me and got that seat instead. Back at the counter, another passenger was surprised to see me come back out and told me she also saw the AA lady in plain clothes (airline card on laniard around her neck) come in behind me. Back at counter, was told I had a chance at the next flight but no guarantee. So here I sit nearly 5 hours already and another 4+ hours until next flight opportunity. Then upon arrival, will have to deal with the matter of learning whether or not my luggage has been found. If not, then I have to go buy more clothing, shoes and toiletries. Day 1 of my vacation has been stolen by American Airlines. Everyone I've dealt with has seemed really confused/stressed out and nothing has been offered to me for the big inconvenience. And to think I wouldn't consider flying Spirit because I was afraid of something like this happening. Will never fly American Airlines again. read more

Really old planes for the bankrupt airline are really depressing. I refuse to fly United which forced me onto American. Both are fairly gross (not including Continental) with old planes and filthy situations. 2 stars because they did run close to on time! I am so sorry to say how disappointed I am with American Airlines.  My wife and I are both Platinum members with almost 19 million miles between us with American.  Yet we still get treated like our business means nothing to them.  You would think that 19 million miles would actually mean something to them wouldn't you?   Having a minor issue with an upcoming flight, called the Platinum hot line and the "supervisor" not only failed to even attempt to help, he also refused to allow me to talk to a superior.  Said "I am a supervisor and managers don't talk to customers".  Well, no problem, I will be a customer with a different airlines.  Good bye American. read more

Absolutely terrible. So I have a bit of a story to this. I was on a business trip to houston and I forgot my wallet on the plane, admittedly this part is totally and wholly my mistake. When I realized I lost my wallet I was met with "fill out this form and we will bring it right back to u." Then in associated emails I was told it will take up too one month to get my wallet back. After that I said ok I'm gonna have to just go to them. After about five DIFFERENT numbers all claimed by American airlines and Houston international to be the aa lost and found I kept getting greeted with either the phone being hung up on me before I could speak or the number is not in service. So on day two I went back to the airport to try and resolve the issue, being met by a lost and found representative who looked for five minutes saying "oh maybe it's upstairs but no one is up and I don't have a key" she gave me now my sixth number to call which is also not in service. On day three of the issue I met all the same stupid and infuriating issues. American airlines is an absolute mess and I highly recommend never using their service. There was a slew of other issues all aircraft related but they're mute problems when this is happening at the same time. DONT FLY AMERICAN AIRLINES. read more

Absolutely pathetic customer service from American Airlines.. First, they cancelled the flight to Orlando and informed me, and many other fliers, two hours before the scheduled departure. Second, they gave us another flight the next day, while they gave us the reason that due to weather they could not fly to Orlando. They lied, they had fights flying to Miami the same day, 30 mins later. Third, I asked for a refund, since they were unable to give me a confirmed seat the same day, but they could not do that either. Absolutely unhelpful behavior from the customer service agents at the airport, a flight full of people stranded at the airport and they had 2 people responding at the desks. I do not like the inconsistency of this airline. I have flown American about 10 times. I can tell you that it has change over the last year. Everyone is changing to the "Spirit" mentality, but not the Spirit prices. One good thing about American is that you are able to have a free carry on. My latest flight was 50/50. On the way to Vegas both my flights were delayed. Uncool. On the way back, both was on time. I had the joy to bond with a fellow passenger who flight for American was cancelled without warning. Another passenger educated me about the cancellation policy. As long as they never say "cancel" and only say delayed, they do not owe the passengers anything. Something to keep in mind along with the 6 oz's of drink they give you. People, what happened to the full can? read more

I've been flying American for a while and have never had any problems before today. Our flight from NY to Philadelphia got canceled due to weather. Not their fault certainly, however, what is their fault is not being able to put passengers on another flight out of the same airport until 2 days later. All the passengers, including families with small children, had to pay for taxis, shuttles, rental cars and/or call family members to take them to airports at least 1 hour and 10 minutes away. That was the closest airport to passengers on my flight. American will not reimburse passengers for these costs. It is not their fault that the weather was bad, but it is their fault for not taking care of customers when they cancel flights! Furthermore, they wanted to charge additional fees for changing my flight because all the "free" seats were booked! Well no kidding it's a holiday weekend.!!! The weather may not be their fault, but that stupidity is!!! My original flight was supposed to leave at 11:00 am, but wasn't able to leave Newark (yep had to go to another state to catch a flight home), until 6:25 pm. That is American Airlines' fault. They provided absolutely nothing to assist their customers in catching makeup flights for the flight THEY canceled. In fact, in my opinion, we passengers on that canceled flight were then treated like the lowest of the low on the totem pole: we had no say in where our seats were located (therefore my son and I were separated on both flights home), we had no say about which airport we could fly out of if we wanted to leave today, we had no say in what time our flight left, and were placed in the last boarding group, and basically treated like sh$t by the Airline. Soooo just beware that this will happen to you to should your flight get canceled!!!! read more

I am in shock of the number of times the flights are delayed or cancelled with this Airline due to mechanical problems with their airplanes. This is their livelihood and they are making it hard for travelers you have paid for services to get to their destinations. The airline never seems to give back when they have created a problem. In my opinion when the airlines are late or cancelled due to a mechanical failure then the airline needs to start reimbursing their clientele for their time. This may prevent them from continuing to not maintain there airplanes properly. read more

My son and 3 yr old grand baby were flying from Europe. This airline delayed their flight 2hrs, then lost the baby's stroller, then because of the first flight being delayed they lost their connecting flight, put them in a hotel that might of had bed bugs because they had bites all over them! Then!!!!! The second flight was also delayed and somehow they managed to break the handles of his luggage bag!!!! He ended up losing a whole day and a half and not getting on time for something important he needed to attend on Monday!!! Somebody please do something!!! American airlines has given such a poor service! Needless to say that their prices aren't cheap! We as a family are very unhappy and dissatisfied with the poor service they have received. Do not book with them for international travel. If I could leave a zero star, I would've. I booked my trip to go to Paris, and had another connection from Paris to London the following day. My flight was delayed about 2 times, then finally cancelled. I asked them to book me on a flight to London or to Paris so I could get there on the same day. The agent agreed, made me leave my line to go to Jet Blue, where I'd be offered a flight but would have to spend the night at my own expense. I agreed, as I needed to get to London. I get to the jet Blue kiosk, the agent starts checking me in, then my reservation goes away. I now have to go back to AA kiosk, still not knowing whether I'll be going for my trip. Finally spoke to an agent at AA, still nothing. I was attending my sister's wedding, and now I missed it. Not to mention how rude, the agent Cynthia was wasting my time, providing absolutely no help. Not looking forward to flying with American Airlines at all in the future. We flew all the way to the Dominican Republic and found out one of our bags didn't make the flight. Wow! The only thing we could do is wait for the next plane to bring our bag and that was the next day. We wasted a whole full day of our honeymoon sitting in our room in the same clothes. I am taking my last American flight tomorrow. I was woken up at midnight to inform me my 6:25am flight was cancelled. They are claiming mechnical problems, but I am sure it is because the flight was not full. They are now routing me from Houston to Phoenix to only go back to Chicago on their co-partner US Scarelines. I have been an AA Platinum member for a number of years and have accumulated hundreds of thousands points. I even have a credit card with them, which will be canceled this weekend. I guess I will give my points to my children, and hope for the best. It's too bad they insist on playing these games. All I can say is, we all have a choice when flying, do not choose American Airlines. read more

I have been on many AA Flights and I like to fly 1st class because I am a nervous (very nervous) passenger. I get on flight 1554 out of Dallas at 7:00 pm and they never come and ask if we need a thing!! Nothing? No service at all that's what you get for 3X the price of a regular ticket!
