Since this is a red eye, boarding group one and better seats for an overnight flight, it sounds great. My second first class flight in 40 plus years. That was also Hawaii. I flew American Airlines today Fort Lauderdale to Dallas and Dallas to Maui. There was no Internet at any time. The pilot said he'd fix it. He never did. There was absolutely no chargers for the phone. I asked the stewardess and she said she had one, but she wouldn't give it to me. I've never heard of such a thing. I was very disappointed in the service and the attitude of the staff. I do not want to fly American again? I've been trying to call them to upgrade my flight back home and I got cut off hung up on twice. read more

In April 2022, bought a flight out of Hawaii with American Airlines. I also bought a flight for my cat through American Airlines customer service on the phone. I confirmed everything between the airlines and my veterinarian. prepared for 10 days to get everything right. veterinary appointments, check regulations and with TSA, Airline, scheduling rides from friends for departure and arrival. When I arrived at the curb at OGG, I said "we're here to check in, headed to SLC". The boys looked at my cat confused, and said "hang on a second" they came back with a female manager with short hair (a haole). After taking my ID and looking me up and down she said "what do you think you're doing"immediately raising her voice at me and saying things that indicated I was trying to trick them into a free flight for this cat on an airline that didn't allow animals. Even though I was holding a ticket out in front of me very confused, and had been booked a cat ride that didn't exist. I had already been charged $100 for the pet flight. Followed all regulations. She refused to look at my 'fake ticket'. This woman screamed and screamed at me. It was publicly humiliating after about five minutes of trying to get a straight answer out of her about what options I had, does she know any other airlines that might take us out of OGG that night etc--she kept ridiculing me for "lying, liar, story" I had absolutely no way to justify whatever she was talking about and my colorful language came out, and I told her not to *f-wording speak to me that way. She then grabbed my arm saying my language got me banned from flying. she grabbed me very hard and closely by my arm. While I was holding bags and my CAT. Forcing me to carry the cat carrier outright in front of me with some of my own luggage left behind for her to gather for me. please note I had not moved from my original spot on the curb. Then she walked me into the street of the airport and blocked my way from leaving traffic. I called a friend to come pick me up from the other side. This AA employee humiliated me, did not explain anything. I had to figure out what had just happened to me through customer service on the phone. All American Airlines ever did for me was refund the ticket. I had three more vet appointments charged to me, 11 extra days of my time taken, my poor cat was already drugged for this airplane ride, then unexpectedly had 2 more vet appointments to meet protocol, and another airport experience to look forward to--and there were absolutely no repercussions for that employee that I know of. It was some of the most inhumane company behavior I've ever seen. Not only do I not recommend American Airlines, but I strongly suggest protecting yourself, and finding an airline that cares about you. read more

We didn't make our LAX-OGG (Mauii) flight due to a longer than expected Covid test lag. The American staff at LAX were very helpful, and at no cost to us, booked us on the first flight the next morning. The flight was on time, in a new A320. They announced up front that there would be no alcohol or meal service...on a 5 hour flight, I didn't starve and no shakes, so all good. Knowing that everyone on the flight had a negative Covid test within 72 hours of boarding and were wearing masks made things pretty relaxing. I didn't even worry about the family of Pinochios who only covered their chins (sometimes their mouths, too). The attendants gave them the stinkeye a couple of times, but must be getting tired of dealing with their sort... All in all. American has almost always given me good, professional service. That's why I'll keep using their services as we get back into pre-Covid travel mode! read more

Being that there are Yelp pages for American Airlines at each airport, my reviews on them are based solely on service at the home base, from counter to the flight attendants. We checked in online and were hand carrying luggage so we didn't need counter assistance. What better way to start out your vacation and flight than with a pleasant flight attendant servicing your cabin? Our flight from OGG to LAX on 11/23/16, first class, was serviced by Amber. Younger, personable, down-to-earth, and far from the grouchy, older furniture you're sometimes unfortunately stuck with for 5 hours or so. Great job girl! The plane seemed newer, but it definitely needed some deep cleaning as there was soda splashes on the seats fronting us. We normally bring wipes to try and sanitize everything but we forgot this time. A plethora of movies were available to bide the time. Even though it was a red-eye flight, we were fed some kind of pasta. I'd usually remember but it must've been forgettable, but not nasty lol. The actual flight time is always less than what's printed on the ticket which is always a good thing. OVERALL: It really depends who you get that'll make your flight enjoyable. We're usually lucky with good service flying out of OGG. read more

American airline is prob one of the worst airlines and just one step above spirit but the Maui airport is Theeeeeeee worst. If you are planning to visit Hawaii I suggest finding a different airline, the employees that live locally pretty much hate tourists! It was not like this 20 years ago now it's just burden to just even greet you. Hawaiian airlines is a bit better but American is on a separate category, for Hawaii you might even be better off with southwestern airlines! Fly with them and you will see what I mean. read more

We had a fantastic experience with American from Kahului to LAX. I see that many of these bad reviews are related to either the airport itself (i.e. a dirty bathroom?), another American airport, the AA app, or "old planes". If you are flying to/from LAX to ANY Hawaiian island you will be on Americans brand new Airbus A321 aircraft. They all have leather seats in both cabins as well as large screens with free movies and entertainment. If you are flying to/from Phoenix keep in mind this is an old US Airways route and you may get that "old plane" that some are complaining about. We checked in about 90 minutes before departure time and there was no one in line. We were though security in just a couple minutes as well. The boarding process started right on time and we even left early. We were lucky to be sitting in First class thanks to our miles. We had a large Dasani bottled water at our seat (like coach) and a nice leather seat with a big screen. The food was very good for "airline" food. They served ahi tuna on rice, a salad with lilikoi dressing and hoisin short ribs with mashed potatoes along with warm taro rolls or hawaiian rolls. I was pretty impressed with the quality of the meal. A fully loaded ice cream sundae with macadamia nuts was offered for dessert. The flight attendant working up front provided evreryone with great service for the 5 hours back to LAX. I would not hesitate to book American again to Maui, we had a great experience. read more

We took a flight from LAX to St. Louis. Flying time was about 3.5 hours. Flight left at 8:30am. We received a bottle of water, 2 cookies and a hand wipe. Stop being cheap AA and rollout the beverage cart and at lest give coffee and soda. You do that from LAX to Hawaii and it is only an hour longer flight. Don't blame it on Covid, you're just trying to save a buck on a plane that is completely full. It galls me that you all took Government bailouts and the reward to the tax payers is even poorer service than before the pandemic. I know you're all about "safety"....big deal, that's the cost of being an airline. If you're not safe you are out of business. Start catering to your customers or they will find another airline that will. And STOP changing your flights and adding stops or canceling flights. It's amazing that those changes always make it worse for the traveler. If you have to do that, how about some money off the ticket? A guy can dream, right? Finally, please do your customers a favor and precheck them for the crazy Hawaiian regulations before you fly them to Hawaii. United does this and it cuts about an hour off the time their passengers wait in line to go through the "show is your papers routine in Hawaii". It took in 1.5 hours after getting off the plane in Maui to get through their gauntlet. read more

12/10/21 flight from Phoenix to Maui. Flight AA 0432 11:30am departure from Phoenix. COVID-19 safety - 1/5 - With the company's leadership, Doug Parker, being vocal about there being no need for masks on planes it is no surprise that the flight attendants make zero attempts to request that the couple next to us wore their masks over their face properly. Flight attendants directly interfaced with the couple multiple times whose nose were completed exposed 99% of the entire flight. Flight attendants have their hands full with folks who don't want to wear masks, but to just ignore anti-maskers is just wrong. The plane - 5/5 - spacious, lots of free movies, charging stations, and ample room for this passenger who paid 475 to have 6" more of leg room. Bottom line - American Airlines needs to do everything they can too to protect their customers. Based upon our recent flight it appears that Doug Parker and American Airlines are not committed to passenger safety. read more

Don't fly AA out of OGG. AA puts the worst planes on this route... Beat up seats, old planes that show their age, and really awful configurations. Right now I'm sitting on a plane from.... Guess it?!? ATA!!! No individual tvs and awful configuration straight out of a nightmare. This is a leisure heavy route so that makes sense but I really recommend flying hnl to dfw where you get a full lie flat at least. AA needs to invest a bit on this route! Zero rating if possible. Both American and United Airlines are practicing in the illegal practice of "bait and switch". If you absolutely do not not care when you fly, arrive, or duration of layover...fly these airlines. However, just know that whatever flight you originally book, they will change within 2 months of your trip, then charge you extra for your original ticket. Just know this is highly illegal, however there seems to be no repercussions for either of these airlines. Disgusting! read more

Making money is the name of the game and even on a 5.5 hr flight overseas American charges for baggage. The American Airlines card is only good for one person. Your spouse has to pay. They don't care if you have 100k miles, you will get charged. Just remember that American is only about serving those who fly all the time. There are other airlines who get what customer service means- SWA, Hawaiian, Alaska. If you are looking for service from the big airlines, forget it. VERY IMPORTANT: AAL doesn't provide any meals to economic economy seats on flights to Hawaii. Fly Hawaiian, they are the same price and take care of you. read more

Review is for OGG to LAX on American Airlines. I skimmed through the reviews here on Yelp and I fully understand the frustrations with travel delays, especially those over a few hours. The reality is that these things happen and occur with EVERY airline, not just American. In a major hub (e.g. LAX, ORD, etc.), airlines do have some spare equipment, but an outpost facilities like Hawaii, that simply isn't practical. Our flight was delayed due to a minor maintenance issue, but we ended up arriving only 20 minutes late into Los Angeles. In-flight service was very good / no complaints. IFE had plenty of movie and TV options to keep you entertained for the five hour flight. read more

If i can give negative a thousand i will. this is the WORST REVIEW in all my reviews. As a military personnel when we fly, usually when i check in my bags they inform me that the baggage is waived, I've never asked and i don't mind paying, it's usually waived. On the way to Maui we flew from San diego to LAX than to OGG, at san diego they informed us and waived the fee, but on return its a whole new story As we check in, were being helped by younger male who looks like he just graduated high school. has never seen a military id, and is lost on the policy. He calls over "denise" (heavy set older caucasian female, glasses, looks like the grinch i swear) she actually goes in the computer/website to read the fine print, the way my dad's job is its keyed differently on his ID, but he works with the military. She's giving us very dirty looks, and is just not wanting to be there or helping anyone. she says that we cannot get the bag waived at all, so i ask why, since when we were coming here it was and it usually is, (i just want a clear explanation, since im confused on what's going on) she yells and says that the people at other airports are not doing their job and you need to compain to them, they dont know what theyre doing, and i asked her to clarify what it was she was talking about, and she did see that it was waived when coming here and she blatently said "IM NOT CHECKING YOU IN HERE, CHECK IN SOMEWHERE ELSE" way i told her thats no way to be talking to a customer. she WALKED AWAY. Way to go, you big old grinch, were you hungry? did you not eat? talk about the biggest beezy known to mankind. did she have something against military personnel not that i want extra treatment, or anything. just to be talked to and treated like a HUMAN BEING. How about hiring competent well trained customer oriented employees, you cant train someone to be nice, they have to be nice, and you should look for that when you hire individuals. We spent a great week in Maui, with some of the best customer service ive experienced, just simple aloha's and a smile. and to end our trip with this fat mean nasty whale was horrible. she has no right to be in the customer service field, she has no right to be in her position as "supervisor", did she attain the required amount of education needed? did she meet the required degrees or level of training? same goes for the 16 year old kid checking us in, the hawaiian routes usually have the well seasoned flight attendants, it should be the same for the airport. and no wonder AA is in bankruptcy its because of some very bad rotten apples (we've had great service from other airports, and the flight attendants were all very nice) and god the airplane, its those OLD 757's with CRT monitors that dont work, no smoking signs on the armrests and ashtrays? really ? really ? really? The worst ever flight to Maui ( OGG ). From LA we were delayed 3.5 hours with a 40 minute interval. They said they were having mechanical failures ( Which is bone chilling to a man brining his wife, 1 year old daughter and Mom with him ) fortunately I think i know the real issue. Its easy to say we are having mechanical issues instead of saying we are loading the air freight cargo to Hawaii and its taking longer than expected. If you cant live up to your expectations then reduce your charges. Last time I checked, if a restaurant doesn't bring your order out in over and hour and a half they don't charge you for their issues. Thank you American airlines for messing up the first day of our vacation, the only vacation we could afford in over 4 years. you suck!!!!! read more

I rate a lot of businesses and rarely ever give a 1 star because I don't want to impact a business unless it deserves a poor rating I give out a lot of 4 and 5 stars and if a bit disappointed in a place that may have had just an off day ...I'll pass on rating them. Ok so our redeye flight was canceled with what appeared to be a contrived story from the pilot. Later found out through the grapevine that there may have been an emergency related to a crew member. First off we waited for almost 2 hours while the 2 aa staff members at the podium gave us a water sandwich ....unprofessional stalling useless information while trying to take care of one lone customer for well over half hour with a queue of many anxious and miffed customers waiting in line . I didn't understand why 1 of them didn't take care of the next in line. Finally. .. We all boarded on the way to lax at 12:45 instead of 10:45 ... everyone got comfy cozy ,heaved a huge collective sigh of relief and sat on the tarmac for another 15 minutes or so and then finally , finally, taxied on the runway when.... low and behold we ended up back at the gate and were told to get off. !!!.really ??? A huge airline cancels 200 plus passengers with no contingency plan for one sick crew member? ?? So we are all now waiting to see if we'll be able to board on the next available crappie afternoon flight after all 200 plus of us spent the night on the floors and vinyl tube chairs . We did receive, later that morning an offer of a meal and a soda at one of the greasy diners ... P.s. on the flight over , I could not believe what awful food we were served in FIRST class. read more

Flew from to LAX to JFK. JFK was my final destination but my original flt had a weird stopover in PHX. I arrived at the airport 2 hrs. early I was told flight to PHX was delayed I would miss my connection. They kindly switched my flight to a later flight direct to JFK. I was assured there was more than enough time to switch luggage. I arrived in JFK but no luggage & no luggage on my original flight from PHX. I was told my luggage was never switched to my JFK flight nor was it put on the original flight with a stop in PHX. Bad enough I arrived without my bag but it took 18 hours once my bag arrived at JFK. A 1 hour trip with traffic. I missed two meetings & had to go out & buy new things. read more

American Airlines has ruined what was a great vacation on the return. Here are the issues we had on the return: 1) I couldn't pre check until I arrived at the airport and the reason why was there was only one hour between my connecting flights and was told that our bags would not be able to make it. On the original flight, we also had an hour between flights, our flight was delayed and the bags had no issues making that flight. Not only that, but now my kids have boarding passes for the connecting flight with no seats. I have to tell my 11 and eight year old that they can't sit with mom and dad. 2) Had to remove items from our bags to get it under the weight limited and I needed up having to throw $200 worth of a beauty product that I had just bought for my wife. I have always had some issues in the past with this airline and for me, this is the last straw. American Airlines consumer affairs department will not contact us. I am completely disgusted with the service we have received from #americanairlines this is our second flight that has been cancelled. I am a single mom of two, who will have NO childcare if I cannot return Monday morning. When asking #americanairlines to help us in getting a return flight, the agent stated I should "be grateful, I didn't have to stay at the airport." This is after our SECOND cancelled flight due to #americanairlines fault. They are rude, unwilling to accommodate, and impossible to work with. The airport informs us they cannot assist us with anything and we need to call the 1-800 number. After calling, Maria a lead in reservations, stated we need to speak to the airport. We have been back and forth for days with no promise that our flight for tomorrow will not be cancelled for a THIRD time. This has been a complete disaster, do not fly with #americanairlines they have not accommodated or taken care of their customers in the slightest for a life impacting inconvenience. Icing on the cake -- they are issuing $14.00 credits for a hotel that costs three times as much. I am completely disturbed that in 2018 this is the level of service we have received. read more

I screwed up and showed up at the airport a day late for my flight from Dallas to LAX, then on to Honolulu. Stuck in the airport with no ticket, little money and no place to stay. Keith, the agent at the desk could see that I was screwed and went above and beyond. Got me on standby to LAX and then to HNL. I had to spend some time at the airport in LA, but made it all the way home late that same night with all my bags present and accounted for. And all the American Airlines people were great along the way. The fights were just fine too! read more

The on board entertainment was broken and the power source did not work. My wife and I were seated apart for the flight. And to top it off our baggage was lost. I've had such a great experience with AA from the get-go! The staff was so nice and friendly to me--and I'm a bit of a nervous girl when it comes to getting on a plane. It's always calming to the nerves to be surrounded by kind people who get it. I had a red eye flight from Maui to Dallas. The plane was so clean and looked so nice. The only complaint I have, was that it was SO cold. Like literally, chattering my teeth made it hard to sleep. Thankful for the blankets that they handed out. I snuggled all night in that bad boy! The pilot gave everyone a free set of headphones if they didn't have them with. How thoughtful! Then returning from Dallas to Maui, I had a morning flight and those ladies let me sleep like a baby and then constantly filled my water cup. I had a window seat with no one next to me. It was awesome. I handed a few of the flight attendants some baggies of mac nut covered Hershey's kisses because I was so happy to be home--and so thankful for the uneventful flight! We had the most rude flight attendant. Her name was Patricia. Totally dismissive and not accommodating. Flight attendants are normally so nice. I understand they probably put up with a lot but we had just literally gotten on the plane. She was rude to my son and on separate occasion on a different part of the plane, rude to my husband. We usually have a good experience with American but she made it bad today. Total bummer! read more

This airline is a joke!! Our flight was delayed on our way to Maui, and as a result, we missed our connecting flight at LAX. The American Airlines customer service rep then said that we "shouldn't have booked our tickets online" and that was why we didn't have enough time to make our next flight. No, actually it would have been fine if the first flight had arrived on time. And who doesn't book their flights online these days?! So, here were are again...our flight is delayed by 5 hours (IF it even leaves at all) due to "mechanical issues" (which I must say, I am grateful that they caught before we took off across the ocean)...which now means that we are missing our connecting flight again. They never know what's going on, and each person we've talked to has said something different. We will definitely NEVER book with American Airlines again!! read more

This is by far the worst airlines ever. Lost my bags going and coming...and I took pictures of my bags, tags, put label inside bags, and had blinking tags. On a connecting flt. Instead of putting me up in a hotel due to delays, they put me on a bus for over 2 hrs. OMG if I wanted to drive I would have.
