The airline overall is decent. Our flight from LAX was smooth and even had USB-C charging at the seat, which was a great touch. This would have easily been a 4-star experience if not for a very difficult interaction at baggage check. Jennifer at the counter was extremely rigid about every pound over the limit and had a noticeably harsh attitude throughout. I was traveling with two small kids, already carrying multiple items, and dealing with delays from the Kona storms, so the lack of flexibility or empathy made an already stressful situation much worse. Being told she was "documenting our reservation" only added to the tension. I get it, Jennifer doesn't like mainlanders or "howleys".  It's unfortunate because the rest of the experience was solid, but that one interaction significantly brought down the overall impression of the airline and brand. read more

Twice to my destination ( I carried my bag on), and once home ( I was rudely told to check it). Communication is poor and its hard to get help on the phone. Left me in line for hours, the lady not only said she had never seen someone's claim number not exist but it would be unlikely my luggage was ever found. It arrived on the 5th day of my trip and by that time I was sick and my luggage had been to Tahiti. Meanwhile a representative of United had out and out lied to me and told me it had been checked in on the plane before I boarded after having my flight canceled and had been rerouted, on waitlist and so forth. We paid for economy plus but United changed our seats at the last moment to economy. We didn't notice until we got on the plane. Our flight was at 2 pm. Our option was to wait for the next flight at 11 pm or get a refund. Not acceptable!!!! Triple check your seat numbers. Same thing happened on Hawaiian airlines but we caught it in time. Argh!! I promised I would change my review from a one star to three stars and I'm keeping my word. When I told one of the flight attendants how unhappy I was, I said I was at that very moment posting my review on Yelp. Who knew Yelp had such clout. Immediately afterwards all the flight attendants couldn't stop fawning over us. All drinks and food were complimentary, as much as we wanted. Of course the meal choices were all gone so we sampled different appetizer boxes. Just bad junk food. Bring your own food. Drinks were ok. We were told we would be refunded the difference between coach and coach plus and we would each get a $50 voucher. A special shout out to Marie. You turned around a bad situation. United Airlines tends to have a bad rap, but I'll just have to go against the grain because generally all my experiences have been pretty positive and I've come away with all my luggage just fine. I fly United a majority of the time and have flown them domestically and internationally. Service varies of course and sh&t happens, but I think knowing what to do and how to respond to various situations also can affect your entire experience. I'm not the most seasoned of travelers, but when they announce that they can't find the captain and they need to get a new crew, I know to get my butt up and do something about it so I can make my next connection. True story. Some agents are more experienced than others so I've definitely hopped from one agent/counter to another until I got what I needed or received sufficient answers to my questions and the kill em with kindness approach has been key to making the most of my experiences. When we flew United internationally recently, they gave all of us $100 vouchers as an apology for spotty connection with the app/entertainment or something. Honestly did not even notice, but it saved me a pretty penny for our next trip. I take traveling with a grain of salt and anything can happen. I'm not a fan of the whole 'basic economy' pricing and not being able to choose your seat these days, but I saw the whole market moving in that direction and refuse to pay extra, so I'm prepared for the repercussions. The newer planes are also pretty tight on space. I'm 5'0" and feel ok. I can't imagine if you're any taller. Spring for the exit row or pay for the upgrade for the extra legroom. If you fly United on a regular basis, consider getting the United MileageExplorer card and take advantage of the extra perks. Savings on checked in luggage alone pay for the annual fee. Lastly, save yourself the frustration and don't buy the wifi when traveling to/from Hawaii and the Mainland. It doesn't work, folks. read more

United airlines has the worst service ever at the Kahului airport. (agent Tina) At the gate they announced that we could check our carry on bag, for free. When we stopped to do it they said because it has wheels there would be a 70.00 fee. The woman was extremely rude and seemed to get pleasure out of up charging us. She said we could have paid 20.00 more when we bought the ticket. We were not made aware of this as we extended our trip due to sickness and booked on the phone. Have you ever heard of someone telling you you have to give them a required tip in order for them to do their job? I paid $40 for my bag to be checked and fly home through the app of United. But when I checked my bag, they told me they require a tip. Just an order for them to do their job and check my bag, all I had was a $10 bill. So in order to get my stuff back home, I had to give them cash, instead of them doing the job that they chose to do. They accepted the interview after applying for the job, and accepted the job after being offered from the interview. I am definitely not a fan of United and neither is my husband, but I find myself surprised to give this particular United Airlines location a rating of 4 stars. But being that this route goes to and departs from Maui, I guess this is the exception. On Labor Day Monday, my husband and I left from LAX to the OGG Airport via United. We caught a late afternoon flight, that was on time. When we boarded the plane, I was pretty surprised to see how empty the plane was. The flight attendances and captain on board had told everyone to feel free to move to an empty space if they would like more room (in the economy section, not the economy plus section. However, initially it was offered for those that wish to upgrade to the economy plus, they could at an additional fee. The stranger sitting next to me had requested to do so but the flight attendant actually suggested for him to save his money and move to one of the many empty rows behind us. He ended up doing that, which was nice that my husband and I were able to sit by ourselves). The flight crew on this flight to Hawaii were friendly and cheerful. They happily poured drinks and provided snacks for everyone down the aisle and also offered to give refills and additional complementary snacks if anyone wanted them (I think the mixed snack mix is just too salty and never care for those). They also checked in on guests and came down the aisles to provide water for anyone feeling thirsty. The aloha spirit was definitely with this flight. On our way back to LAX, the flight crew were also just as friendly and in a cheery mood (different flight crew from the first flight). Unfortunately our flight was nearly full coming back to LAX (this was on a Tuesday evening red eye, going into Wednesday), so we ended up sitting next to a stranger (but ended up being excellent company). Shortly after take off, the captain had mentioned how great his crew is on board (which I have never heard a captain ever really praise the flight attendants on board. I thought that was nice because people don't get appreciated enough for their hard work). He had mentioned that we were in good hands and that every year, each flight crew has to go through special safety training, etc. He continued to mention other things that this particular crew has done. Just like the 1st flight we had, the flight attendants also were more than happy to provide additional refills of complementary beverages and snacks for those that wished to have seconds. Later on in the flight, water was offered for those needing to hydrate themselves. We were also asked by a flight attendant if we needed anything. I wish all United Airline flight attendants were this attentive and in such an upbeat mood (but I understand that can be hard, especially with so many flights back to back... no matter how much I fly in a year, which is quite a bit, I still hate it). The only reason why I cannot award United Airlines the full 5 stars is the small and uncomfortable seats. I know that airplanes will never go back to the larger seats that they once were, but I just wished I wasn't so crammed in (my husband totally dislikes sitting in the middle, so I have no choice but to sit there. I just wished it was a little bit more comfortable... oh well, that will never happen). read more

Deplorable airline. Awful customer service. I will never use United Airlines again after missing two connections resulting in one five hour delay, and another overnight delay. The clerks on duty tried to discredit the delay to avoid giving their clientele vouchers for airport hotel accommodations, by claiming there was a ' nine minute discrepancy ' whatever the hell that means. A whole plane of people stood in line having missed connecting flights and their service personal kept us all waiting, apparently trained to give their paying customers the run-around. Checking in wasn't a problem. The airport itself was pretty empty. But at the United counter they are very helpful in getting me through the process. I did however have a slight problem at the desk where they call you to get on the plane. There was a big wall that separates two between the lines and you're up against the window which I didn't mind where you could see out. But it's just a weird setup. They did accommodate me to sit in the back by the window which I didn't mind. I wouldn't recommend the food to anybody. It looks so good in the photos but when you order is so tiny and small and pricey. And it's very tasteless. I forgot what I ordered I was so tired. But I regretted it when I got off the plane cuz my stomach was upset.. I didn't mind the attendants going up and down the aisles passing out drinks. They did keep the water coming quite a lot.... four times during our flight they offered water and drinks. The fight was a bit rough but that's to be expected we did hit some turbulence. Just awful service. We flew United roundtrip from LAX to OGG. I'm not sure where to begin on how awful this airline and their service is. The good news: we're still alive. The bad news: you'd get to your destinations quicker if you walked. Their flights are notorious for delays. They will not provide you with detailed or proper information. The absolute WORST airport in for United Airlines is in Maui, of all places. The lady working the information booth was rude, nasty and deliberately ignored guests. She'd allow people to stand in line 30-45 minutes just to tell people she's not answering questions for that particular flight and to come beck. I personally witnessed her arguing with the pilot! Their flights were delayed because they couldn't find aircraft personnel. How comforting is that!? They truly treat their paying customers like an inconvenience. Worst of all, my bag came off of baggage claim with my lock popped, suitcases opened and rummaged through with NO explanation as to why!? read more

Icontinuation I was appalled at the treatment I received and the treatment I overheard to fellow passengers. So I left Maui Sunday 16th at 820 pm and landed in KC Tuesday morning at 230 am. I always dress to the 9s. We flew to Maui with United Airlines and they forced us to checked in the bags for $30 each (one way) in addition to a $10 for seat selection. The airplane seats were really tied to each other with no infotainment no option to internet. The only option is to download their app and watch over your phone tablet laptop. They don't give food and the food selection to purchase is not good either. Overall not a good experience, specially for a 6 hrs flight. read more

I had a business trip planned from Maui to San Francisco flying United. First time using this airline. I haven't flown in quite some time so when I arrived, I had questions on what I was supposed to do. Walking up to the ticket counter, a staff member walked me through checking in and getting my boarding passes. He pointed me in the right direction and said "I'll see you up there in a little bit." The world needs more employees like this guy. Arriving at my gate early, I got comfortable and mentally prepared for a long flight. There was a problem with the aircraft pushing our flight time out farther and farther. Finally it was announced that we would be moving to a different gate and taking a different plane. Take off was still unknown. After 2 hours, they let us know that we'd be boarding within just a few minutes. They apologized over and over for the inconvenience of this delay. A little girl announced: there's a rainbow!! Sure enough, a rainbow was stretched out behind the plane reminding me that everything was going to be okay! When we finally boarded, the plane was really clean and blankets were already out. I could tell it was going to be a great flight. The staff was so involved and always asking if I needed anything. I have to say, this was a really smooth plane ride and the pilot let us know what was going on the entire time. I was really excited because no one was sitting next to me so I had the whole row to myself. I saw a little girl stretched out across the seats and wondered if it would be appropriate for an adult to do the same? :) The staff really took good care of us and made me forget all about those long 2 hours laying..waiting...bored in an airport. DO NOT feel 1st class was worthy of the cost. Small seats with a wide selection of movies. Space felt claustrophobic, you are literally sitting shoulder to shoulder with the person next to you. HORRIBLE food (eggplant anyone?), served immediately as soon as the plane takes off. The entire 1st class chose chicken so we were asked if we would choose eggplant. Nope. I am a million miler, Platinum rated on UA. The last seven times I have flown on United, within the past year, they have either cancelled or changed my flight. Most often this results in me having a terrible seat. They do it in the 24 hrs prior to departure so that changing to another airline costs you a bundle. They have made bait and switch their standard practice. They have no intention of flying the flight they sell you. I am looking to find out what airline is not a bunch of criminals. However, just know that whatever flight you originally book, they will change within 2 months of your trip, then charge you extra for your original ticket. Staff here are really unpleasant and not welcoming. "If you are standing with no one in front of you and there are people behind you, YOU are the one holding up the line!" I mean, it could be worded in a more professional manner. Flight attendants don't smile and don't greet you. During the flight, one of the attendants collected trash from us. I heard her say with so much anger "Thank you! You are the first one to say thank you to me!!" We were in row 28 and she seemed peeved that nobody had previously thanked her for her service. Hearing that, I felt sympathetic and told her thank you, to which she just ignored and continued on. Throughout my 5 hour flight, I continued to thank her but she never once smiled or said your welcome. She just looked angry the entire time. At the end of the flight, I had spoken with someone else about her attitude and they also mentioned that she gave them a lot of attitude. Local customer service here in Maui @UA.......LACKS ALOHA. UA changed the plane therefore changed my seat assignment less than 24 hr before my flight which made it impossible for me to change my seats on my app or via phone call last night. I understand the difficulties of work processes, I too work under a lot of pressure, but would NEVER SPEAK to my "customers" (nurses and doctors) as Keawe spoke to me. Don't like your job? Now I am NOT a fan of any airline; but today United Airlines saved my life along with 363 other passengers. We were on the "doomed " flight 1175 from San Francisco to Honolulu. 45 minutes before landing, an engine covering came off, and was sucked back into the 2nd engine rendering it useless. Our 777 was running on one engine! We were 17,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean. People were screaming & crying; myself included. This is it, I thought! I texted people & prayed. The United pilots kept the terribly shaking plane level & the passengers calm. The flight attendants made sure we re-read our emergency flight information cards; they told us what to do CALMLY, as we chanted and braced for impact. All personnel on that flight worked together & made sure that we knew what to do and thankfully we landed safely. The scariest flight of my life. So no matter what people say about United, keep in mind that there are 363 passengers out there to talk about how amazing those last 45 minutes were. read more

ONLY 1 STAR BECAUSE I HAVE TO SO THIS WILL POST. ZERO STAR, RATHER, NEGATIVE STAR. By far the worst airline out there. Being late, not having a gate ready for our arrival, so we sat in plane for over 30 minutes ALMOST missed connection, i made it because I ran and didn't use bathroom or get water. Plane was not very clean. And to top it off pee on bathroom floor, urine smell disgusting! Had to ask for hot water to wash my shoes. Ask attendant to clean it up his response "its not my job, cleaning crew does the cleaning" UNREAL! No Butt Paper.... REALLY?!? ITS A PUBLIC BATHROOM!!! DISGUSTING! and I couldn't connect to wifi. 3 attendants tried to help. Nope, didn't work and my phone is brand new nothing wronge with it. On another recent flight, this was said over intercom. Delayed due to Not having "anyone to drive our plane over to gate" REALLY?!? So we all waited in San Fransisco waiting to get to Maui (for me get home to work as soon as I touch down) hours went by, missed entire day of work. Then I am treated like a low class vagrant because I buy the ticket I WANT to afford, No carry on, that's extra $. UNREAL! And if I want seat to recline just a touch more...... EXTRA FEE. Incredibly uncomfortable seats. Im not tall. Average, and my knees skim seat back in front of me. What a way to run an airline. Cutting up my united cc.
