Went from free seating to assigned seating. They now make you sit in seats where they put you in the most uncomfortable seats possible. Many rows in the back were open and they had me sitting next to an elderly couple. I had moved to an open row and they forced me to make the older couple move together so I could sit there. They're excuse is "because the plane is balanced" Before when they had open seating they only required a certain number of people to sit in the back part of plane and didn't specify where just as long as it was in the back. Probably another ploy for corporate greed so you buy your seating. read more

I haven't flown in a few years since before having my baby. I think the last time I flew was when I was hapai and flew on Hawaiian Airlines to the Big Island. This past Wednesday I booked last minute tickets on Southwest and had ZERO problems with them. They were super accommodating with us and our toddler. On our flight over, we had a whole row to ourselves and my baby did such a great job on her first plane ride. Another plus is now you don't have to get off on the tarmac and walk 100 miles like before. Tyj. Everything with Southwest went great and I will continue to choose them over and over again because they are affordable and are open seating. The employees at both HNL and OGG were all great. It's still 2 free checked bags for now. Not sure when that is changing but I'll take it for now and if they are still cheaper than Hawaiian, I'll still continue to fly with them. Would you pay $879 for basic economy flying from Kahului to San Francisco? Thursday Alaska Airlines cancelled my 737 max 9 flight from Kahului to San Jose on Saturday. Hawaiian Airlines had openings on Kahului to San Francisco Saturday but was charging $879 for basic economy. The previous Friday and following Monday $359 one way. Checked Southwest airlines from Kahului, and flights full for San Francisco and San Jose, but they had a $166 basic economy fare to Oakland on a 737 max 8. We purchased the $25 per person per trip early bird check in, which assigned us a boarding gate position between A31 and A60, 36 hours before the flight. In our case A41 and A42. People in economy without early bird check in have to check in 24 hours in advance on the web site to get their boarding positions , which will be after we board. People in the lowest fare group board last. At the boarding gate, business class passengers A1-A15 board next. Business class is usually double the price of basic economy. Passengers with disabilities can get tickets marked PRBD, and board after A1-A60, a change due to the "Southwest wheelchair scam". Customer Service determines if a customer meets PRBD requirements through a series of questions. They are trying to avoid the "Southwest wheelchair scam", where physically able seniors request a wheelchair simply to get their families onto the plane first. And PRBD families cannot occupy emergency exit seats. We get on before the PRBD. The aisle seats of the front bulkhead seats were occupied , with the middle and window seats empty. Had to pass on these seats as all the overhead luggage bins in the front section were full by the time we boarded at A41, A42. Seating far forward is a quick route to the 1 forward bathroom, which has an indicator light of occupancy on the overhead. 2 bathrooms in the back, or 3 bathrooms altogether for 30 row, 175 passenger capacity Boeing 737-max 8. Business class couple take aisle seats 15C and 15D in the first emergency exit row. This row has by far the most legroom, so much so that the other four seats in the row would be occupied. We occupy seats 16B and 16C, also in the emergency exit row, but only two seats on each side of the aisle, and much less legroom than row 15. I use the 1 forward bathroom twice during the second half of the 5 hour flight from aisle seat 16C Row 17 is also an emergency exit row, but no window in the window seat. Window seats 17A and 17F have the most leg room, as no seats 16A nor 16F. There are 25 open seats on the flight, so the Boeing 737 max-8, with 175 seats, was 85% full, with the only empty seats being 25 of the 60 middle seats. There is no meal service for the 5 hour flight. They serve 1 bag of snack mix, wheat thin crackers and Welch's fruit snack and chocolate brittle along with two 6 oz drinks. No 8 oz let alone 12 oz containers of soda given out. No chargers on Southwest airplanes. Bring battery boosters, as you don't want a dead battery cell phone when requesting ride sharing at your destination. They do have wifi. I watched the entire 49er-Packer divisional playoff playing on the upright tablet of seat 15D, across the aisle and diagonal in front of me in seat 16C, even reading the score. Southwest is GREAT!! They offer great snacks especially when going to Hawaii. The captains are very nice, and know what they're doing. Same goes for the cabin crew. They are all very friendly. The only red flag is most times I fly with southwest, our bags get damaged. They only give us a $50-$75 dollar voucher for my expensive suit case. Hopefully they fix that situation. Southwest is my usual go to when flying domestically. I like the open seating and I especially like free bags as I am a major over packer. This review is specifically for flights in and out of Maui. This is one of the longer flights Southwest offers and you are not going to get those random cheap flights here. Cheap flights here happen in the off season. That being said, I thought what I paid was slightly too high considering the amenities that are both included and not included in the flight. As far as customer service goes, Southwest is always friendly and also funny. Flights take about 5-6 hours from LAX. Both flights I took from LAX to Maui were on the 737 MAX8 which is definitely more spacious and comfortable that the planes they use on most of their domestic flights in the main lands. We actually found it had more legroom and width of the seats. What they are missing are screens for TV or movies. What they offer is Wifi and access to movies through their app. The selections of movies, TV shows and music was decent and the app also showed flight times, altitude, etc. For a flight this long, I would think they would offer an in flight meal. That they don't, but they do offer a larger snack pack that has crackers, cheese, snack mix and fruit snacks. They also offer another light snack later in the flight. Drinks are your usual suspects but you can also pay for adult beverages as well. The lavatories are kept clean but quite tight for a bigger dude like me. On a recent flight from Honolulu to Kahului we encountered a bossy, rude flight attendant. She complained during the entire boarding process on the loud speaker and in person about where hand carries belong. As she was closing overhead bins she yelled out when a bin wasn't to her liking for the passenger to adjust the bags. A first for me was her making a passenger stand up to remove a small fanny pack that was secured to his waist and place it under the seat. Re-training should be due for her, or retirement. read more

Competition is necessary to keep prices down. At our strongest, Hawaii was home to three inter-island carriers, Aloha Airlines (1946 - 2008), Mid Pacific Airlines (1981 - 1995) and Hawaiian Airlines (1929 - current). Discovery Airways operated for just 3 months in the 90's before ceasing operations. But, the wolf in sheep's clothing was definitely Go! (2005 - 2014) who started an inter-island airfare war by selling one-way tickets for as low as $19, which eventually pushed Aloha Airlines into bankruptcy. For 11 years, we've had to deal with the monopoly of Hawaiian Airlines and their often ridiculous pricing, many times as high as $300 to fly a hundred miles. Thankfully 2019 rolled up with Southwest's announcement of starting service in the 808. OGG to HNL: Even though you're not flying to the US mainland, you must put all bags through agricultural screening prior to arriving at the boarding gates as you'll be arriving in the international terminal of HNL, according to a screener. The Southwest boarding gates (west terminal) are currently being expanded as they're a lot smaller than the eastern terminal. Being a Southwest virgin, my friend had to explain the numbered signs hanging from the ceiling. You board by letter groups and stand under the sign of your position number. Position numbers are issued according to the time you check in online. The earlier you check in, the lower your position number is, meaning you'll be at the front of the boarding group. I'm sure it works better in larger holding rooms but it's cramped at OGG. The 737 Max8 (seating 3 & 3) wasn't full, so there was room to spread out. There's also more legroom than Hawaiian and no first class is available. HNL to OGG: Funny as we didn't have to go through agricultural screening here. Maui has some odd rules. I was right, as the boarding here went a lot smoother in a larger holding area. The flight back to Maui was just as empty with room to spread out. THE "FAR" WALK: Many-a-Mauians have mentioned a long walk to the gates at HNL. I have no idea what they're talking about as it felt like the same distance as flying Hawaiian. Stop being lazy! TIP: Only water is available on inter-island flights due to the distance being under 175 miles. OVERALL: Welcome to the Aloha State! The clientele is definitely different than Hawaiian Airlines which made me chuckle. Affordability and comfortability are winners in my book. I just wish they had a later HNL - OGG flight than 8pm. read more

Avoid Southwest for inter-Island Hawaiian flights! I love Southwest airlines - I have their credit card and am a frequent flier- but they really struggle with flights between the Hawaiian islands. My top complaints are: 1. Poor communication in-terminal: In order to fill planes, they combine numerous flights and are not clear about which flights are continuing/laying over. 2. Over-crowded flights: by combining multiple flights, you have to wait while passengers board and deplane, making the boarding time longer than the actual flight time between the islands. 3. Staff burnout: the staff are completely exhausted and grumpy (which is NOT the standard for Southwest). This is understandable considering how overworked they are from the many passengers questions resulting from combined flights and unclear communication. I will be booking with Hawaiian Airlines on all future inter-island travels. The hassle of traveling Southwest is not worth the loyalty miles. read more

Flights were on time. The only complaints we ever heard was due to bad customer planning ahead to be slowed down by security and not the Airlines. The snacks were ok, and the services were honed down by Covid Regs. I like Southwest. I get what I pay for, I arrive on time, and I am treated with respect. Not bad at all. I will continue to fly with them. I had done a round trip in a day to pick up my dog and the entire staff was wonderful from the beginning to the end of my short trip. I wanted to mention Mark at the Honolulu Airport. There may be more than one since it's a common name but he was at gate E1. He was really nice and came over to talk to me while I was waiting at the gate 2-3 hours prior to my departure. Southwest deserves 5 stars in my opinion because when you approach people with a positive attitude, you will get what you receive. The flight attendants were amazing, caring, and kind. Southwest has always been my preferred airlines when it comes to traveling and flying to places like Hawaii, etc. I love the low cost effective fares and they fly pretty much everywhere. The only reason I'm giving Southwest 3 stars is because the flight attendant literally told the entire flight to not use their own Clorox wipes to wipe down the seats because it was an irritant to some people and it's not allowed. Soooo confused cause I'm pretty sure there are no rules that says you can't wipe down your own seat. It wouldn't be a problem if Southwest actually cleaned and disinfected in between flights! I know this because I sat down and had to wipe down crumbs off my seat from the previous flight. Y'all are sick for not cleaning properly especially when I got sick from a sick passenger last November. read more

YAY! Southwest is here and they're finally bringing some much needed competition to the islands in terms of airline carriers and I honestly couldn't be happier. My BFF joked about going to Trader Joe's a few months back and just by chance I managed to score some cheap seats to San Francisco for a quick weekend-ish trip when they first released their tickets. So, LOTS of things to know before you go: 1. There's no assigned seating which may be completely foreign to a lot of people, but it is somewhat similar to the direction other airlines are heading. That means ALL seats are available to passengers. Upon check-in, you get a "boarding order" and you get on the plane in that order. You get to pick whatever seat, wherever you want on the plane. The boarding order is A1-60, B1-60, then C1-60 and you line up accordingly. The lower your boarding number the more choices you'll have when on the plane. The good outweigh the bad and generally if you're traveling with another person or as a family you'll have no trouble sitting together if you're all in Group A or B. If you're in Group C, you may have to get creative ;) Usually people are nice and they don't mind moving, especially if you're with a child. Just don't be a jerk and try to save all the seats or overhead bin and you'll be golden. OR check-in early and by early I mean exactly 24 hours before your flight. You can also pony up an extra $15+ to get early-bird check-in 36 hours before your flight. 2. There's no tv screens. There is however in-flight entertainment provided via their Southwest app. So, you'll need to download their app before you fly! They had about 40 movies to choose from, live TV, music stations, beverage menu, flight status, etc. all available on their app. 3. They surprisingly had in-flight wifi for $8 for 24 hours of access. iMessage and Whatsapp could also be used for free as well. Not too shabby! 4. No meals are provided, at least not from Maui to the West Coast. They do however provide a bag of snacks which was filled with crackers, cheese, fruit snacks, & pretzels. They also gave Milano cookies and came by once or twice for beverages. They don't have food/beverage carts, so service can be interrupted if there's a lot of turbulence on the flight. Eat a meal or bring a snack before you board! 5. Changing tables for the kiddos are on the bathroom to the right if you're facing the tail of the plane. It's a budget airline so really, I wasn't expecting many frills! Not that my expectations were low, but I was actually pleasantly surprised with everything that we encountered. The space was way more spacious than many of the airlines I've been on lately. The seats were ok, not the comfiest, but fine, and I'll take space to spread out and stretch my legs any day! The service was also good & flight attendants were friendly. I don't really need much, but I was really impressed by this one flight attendant that was directing a mama who was holding her baby superman style to the bathrooms behind us and said, "Oooh, you're definitely going to need help with that! Let me finish this real quick and I will come and help you." The baby had completely blown out (poooop!) his diaper & if you're a mom, you know how challenging this can be to tackle in a small airplane bathroom! I've done it. It's not fun. I've even sat through a flight with my kiddo's blown out diaper leaking onto my lap, lol. If that's not great service, I do not know what is. Speaking of babies, there were noticeably A LOT more kids on my flights than normal. Perhaps it's the time of year or the fact that Southwest has made Hawaii more accessible/affordable to families now, but it may be something to consider if that's not your jam. Overall, I would fly with them again and they're offering good perks for Hawaii folks at the moment. Take advantage while you can! If there's one piece of advice that I could offer... the fake flowers in the hair and fake maile leis. Please, if you're going that route, do it right or don't do it at all. Tourists may not notice, but as someone who grew up in Hawaii, it just looks tacky. Partner with a local farm, florist, or artisan and do fresh flowers/leis, support the local community. That extra touch makes all the difference. read more

Southwest is a great addition to the Hawaiian Island interisland service. The planes are more spacious than the competition. The seats are padded well with ample leg space with padded seats that recline. I was an elite flyer with their competition and will be flying Southwest for most of my interisland travel. Two points to be made here. If you are flying to Oahu you will not be able to handcarry fresh fruit since you depart in the main terminal. Secondly it's a hike to and from the main terminal. You can take a free shuttle if you prefer. I understand that their competition bought out the closer Gates to prevent Southwest from acquiring them. A pretty sneaky move. They also match the fares for the flights times that Southwest offers. It's nice to see that their flights are prety full while the competition's are not. I can't believe what happened to me on my recent flight from LAX to Maui. I have been flying for 20 plus years and I have never felt discriminated against by anyone let alone a black stewardess. Right after the safety announcement I got a distinct feeling that this lady wanted to kick me of this flight. After the safety announcement she comes directly to me and says "did you hear the announcement? You know you are to put the oxygen mask on first before you put it on your son?" Now please someone tell me if this has happened to you? And I replied "yes I know this" and she walks away. Then an hour before we land, I take my son to the bathroom at the front of the plane and as I am showing him how to use the toilet, she yells at me "you can't just stand here", to which I said " I know this and will go back as soon as I show my son how to use the toilet" She then snaps back at me saying " I am glad you know this" WTF.... After that as I am heading to the bathroom she whispers something under her breath.. at this time I just lost it and I complained to the cabin supervisor. Two seconds later there is an African American gentleman who was just standing in the same spot chatting it up with her...and she didn't say anything to him. And all this as I am taking a vacation with my family after three years. The airlines expect passengers to behave a certain way and this is how they treat their customers? Well I have to admit I enjoy Southwest being an inter island carrier their competitive pricing and they're relatively good schedule between islands has made visiting a Oahu a bit easier for me. When we arrived it was also occupied and they said their was another aircraft coming in and will be going to that gate and we will have to wait for the NEXT gate. We hurried to book our flight to Maui the day southwest released those flights. We didn't score those super cheaper $49 seats but we got a discount from what competing airlines were charging. Half a year later we arrived at SJC. Hubby got priority seating for our two kids. They were within the first 10 people to board. I boarded as B47. Kids saved me a seat so we were all seated in a row. The airplane seats two aisles of 3 seats. We would have been ok with family boarding as well but we didn't know what to expect for our first sw flight to Hawaii. We ended up taking off a little early. We logged into their free WiFi. Hubby watched a movie and I kept track of how far we had traveled. Kids enjoyed the snacks they provided, especially the dark chocolate Milano cookies. Be sure to pack some food because they don't serve full in meals on this flight. 5 hours flew by quick. Seats were comfy enough. Landing was a bit turbulent (probably due to the high winds in Maui). Overall it was an enjoyable quick flight. Thank you southwest for your awesome service! Southwest just landed in Hawaii this year. A new experience for us to ride this airline. Staff was extremely friendly. Boarding agent was funny, warm and welcoming. The flight crew was very professional and did note passengers who were not compliant with loose stored bags beneath their feet. Flight was uneventful which is always a good thing. The cabin was clean and fairly spacious, all things in consideration. Almost all passengers were agreeable with the open seating policy (we spent a little more to have upgraded seating before check in) Free bag check per person is a perk for sure and the juice and pretzels on a short hop over to the neighbor island exceeded my expectations. The experience lived up to their reputation: exceptional value and service. Definitely will be back. read more

A few things I wish I knew before booking with Southwest when traveling inter island, but learned about it. 1. No preboarding for people with infants and/or with kiddos 2yrs and under. If you would like to board earlier....check in 24hrs ahead. 2. Don't pay for the pre-check, $15. If you check in online 24hrs prior to your trip....you get to check in in the first group, group A. That allows you first dibs on the plane to choose your seats first & have overhead space. 3. I wish I knew when I booked online that my plane was a connecting flight to the mainland and the terminal the plane was landing was an international terminal which means....I could not carry-on fruits. Online it didn't state it was a connecting flight. And I found out at check-in that most Southwest Airlines are....and there's no way to check unless you call ahead before booking. Never had an issue with Hawaiian airlines traveling inter island! I gave it a 2 because the tickets were cheap, more leg room, and checking in was relatively easy. Staff was ok. This definitely deserves a review! We were stuck in west Maui due to Maui brush fire closed down the highway for one and a half day so we missed our flight. We called Southwest and they are NO help plus they want to charge us triple the price for the next flight. We (family of 4) were already struggling with last minute shelter / car rental situation. So we waited out till the next day. We arrived to OGG and met Shannon, she was extremely helpful and understand the situation. She when above and beyond to seek for help and got us the next flight off the island without penalizing us. Shannon, if you read this review, we wanted to thank you for your help! (She took this opportunity and make a a positive experience). All airlines including Southwest need to understand this is a golden opportunity to help someone in the future and creat a positive memorable moments! read more

First time ever flying Southwest, heard a lot of good reviews so I wasn't too iffy and plus it's just a short flight from OGG to HNL and I must say it wasn't so bad! Got my one way flight back to Honolulu for only $39 and it also comes with 2 free check in, I thought I wouldn't need to check in any bags but since I brought home some Krispy Kreme I decided to check in my carry on and good thing to check in bag wasn't an issue. So the other thing I was iffy about was not being able to choose your own seats because I honestly love having the window seat to see the beautiful views. So I think the way that Southwest does it, is by whoever checks in first prior (24 hours before flight) which will determine what zone (A,B,C) I was in zone by and I checked in right when I seen the ready for check in email for me and my sister in law. To be exact we was in Zone B #2 & 3 so that was pretty good. They call up zone A, family, zone B then so on so by the time we got to go in the plane there was still lots of seats left and they were pretty good ones! So I recommend you checking in right away! Also when booking, try to book everyone under the same confirmation that way you guys can all be in the same zones. They provide juice, water and pretzels because the flight was so short but I think for longer flights you have better drink options, although I don't think that they offer actual food but I'd say all the workers at Southwest we're awesome! We were very happy SW provided competition to neighbor island travel. Our trip to Maui was pleasantly uneventful but we had almost a 4 hour wait to return to Honolulu. A good thing to know is that it is SW Policy to compensate passengers when they are inconvenienced. Apparently one announcement was made about compensation but not everyone heard because many left the lobby after receiving a text that the flight was delayed. SW staff on Oahu were sympathetic. They made several announcements at their gates for their delayed flights that day compared to the one we received. They said they could not compensate us on Oahu but gave us a SW Customer Service #. Be aware that SW Customer Service runs on Texas time and the wait can be long. I waited 40 minutes for someone to come on the line to get assurance of compensation because their email address on their website was not accessible. I say assurance because the compensation has not yet been received. The flight before us, to Oakland, was delayed 2.5 hours. They were told to walk about, get snacks, of their choice, and submit receipts. We received Crispy Cremes and cans of water, after which the SW Maui staff disappeared till shortly before passengers boarded. read more
