Greek Chop Salad & Miso Black Cod
    Matt H.

I love this place. Everyone needs their go to spot for American food for the casual night where you just want a solid meal no frills American bar is this spot for me. I have been countless times and will keep coming back. While the food is nothing mind blowing it's always solid. The service is always great and the ambience perfect for whatever evening you're intending to have. The chopped and Greek chop salad are always great and the miso black cod is wonderful. We even ordered a second miso black card the last time we were there. They make a great martini and always have the perfect aesthetic.

Great service but our food was just OK, the salad was a bit vinegary and could be chopped. The pornstar martini was separated which isn't my preference. well decorated and cute glasses

Not going to lie I was stoked to eat here and the food did not disappoint. This place gets booked up quick every night of the week so be sure to get a reservation ahead of time. The inside of the place is also insanely quaint and just an overall great vibe. I would highly recommend if in the area. We got 4 total dishes ordered the burger but the salmon and the chicken also came out tasty. Cheers!

The spinach artichoke dip is to die for. It is an absolute favorite and you need to order it. We also ordered the lobster pasta and burger which were both solid. We were seated in the outdoor heated tent and really enjoyed it and appreciated the quality service we received here.

I was visiting New York for a short two day weekend and I stumbled upon this bar and I am so happy I've been thinking about this place for about two weeks. I had the dirty martini and it was the best martini in my whole life. There was a hint of blue cheese in the vodka mix. The bartender was very nice and the vibe was quaint and gave young professional. Overall, I would come here again, and I would try the food but just based off of the dirty martini, I would give it 50 stars. Also, my dining partner stated that the old-fashioned was very good .

A group of 6 of us came at noon and who knew American Bar is a VIBE for lunch. Ambiance was almost better at lunch, I don't know what it was. I ordered the espresso martini as I know they're GAS here, but immediately regretted it when I tasted someone else's breakfast martini. The fusion of Tito's, Orange Marmalade, and lemon had me feeling like I was sitting on the beach in the South of Italy under a striped umbrella just enjoying my existence. Not Positano though, it gets too crowded. We started with pigs in a blanket and they were straight heat, as they almost always are. They are undebatably one of the most underrated appetizers in the game. Pigs in a blanket gotta be 6th man of the year... The 3 of you that consistently read my reviews know that I'm on a quest to find the best steak frites in the city, so when I seen it on the menu I had to pull the trigger. The 8oz hanger steak came with maitre'd butter and some well done thin fries. Not steak sauce on top thank GOD. When a steak comes with steak sauce, one can't help but wonder what they are hiding. What you scared of? Let that steak be eaten for what it is. The steak came medium rare and was cooked PERFECTLY. Fries were good to but to be honest I am a sucker for some thick cut fries or shoestring fries. One extreme or the other... that's personal preference though. I mean everything kind of a personal preference ahahha. We got the check and headed to the Spaniard as one does after a meal in the West Village. All in all, I have it ranked 3rd on my NYC steak frites ranking behind Virginia's and Pastis. I've only tried like 8 though ahahaha they be expensive. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews

    Spinach Artichoke Dip

Was so excited to eat at American Bar after having cocktails at the bar a number of times and the experience was disappointing. We were a few minutes late to our reservation due to public transportation issues and had to wait in line while others checked in at the restaurant, once we were in front of the hostess she was very rude saying "she was just about to give our reservation away", and that "we need to make sure we are wrapped up by 9:30 because they need the table back". First off none of the above needed to be said, she could have just said "welcome, we will seat you in just a moment" the additional context is just unnecessary and rude! We are sat quickly and our server comes over and takes our drink order and asks if we are ready to order food (this in four minutes after we were sat) we knew what we wanted to order as an appetizer but had not had time to decide on anything else; the server seemed annoyed and told us that we need to put our entire order in, so we all just made a split decision as we felt pressured. Here is what we had and our thoughts on the dishes: Appetizer: - Spinach and artichoke dip (this was really great and I loved the chips that came with it) Main course: - Salmon (very dry and overcooked, also I have never had a restaurant ask me how I want my Salmon cooked) - hamburger (my boyfriend said that it was an overpriced five guys burger at best and that there are better hamburgers in the city) - bolognese (good, but nothing to write home about). The two items on the menu that were actually good are the spinach dip and the French fries. I would recommend coming to American Bar to sit at the bar and have a cocktail and fries, don't waste your time sitting at a table and eating mediocre food. The two stars are for the Ambiance and the dip. I will not be returning to American bar and I used to love dropping into this place for a nightcap.

    Spring Rolls
    Hannah H.

Such a great experience! Food was amazing, probably the best salad (peanut chicken) i've had in a while. The only negative thing I would have to say is that we asked for the dressing on the side and it came tossed but the taste made up for it. And then we ordered the spring rolls and they were so good so flavorful crispy crunchy everything was amazing about them. We wanted to order more but we were very full. The salad is very big so I recommend getting that as your entrée or sharing with someone (please do half versions of all your salads). I then got the Lychee martini which was good, but it wasn't a very flavorful Lychee profile, so not sure if I would order again. Lastly, my friend ordered the espresso martini which was very frothy and all the right flavors. We walked in last night around 6:30pm looking to grab some food. There wasn't tables available but bar was first come first serve. While we were standing there a resy notification for the bar popped up at 7:15pm so while we waited we went across the street to grab a drink and then we asked the host to text us if the bar seats opened up sooner which she did so thank you! Overall, this experience was amazing and I'm looking to come back and try the pigs in a blanket and burger.

Sat at the bar w my friend and had so many glasses of wine and an amazing salad w fries. It's beautiful inside but they also offer outdoor seating. I'll be dreaming about that salad for a while.

This place is great for people watching, but not great for much else. Our food and drinks were just okay and the service was efficient but not necessarily friendly. I would come back for drinks, but would skip dinner.

    Leland L.

Such a great experience here. The atmosphere is so New York. I love the graphics on the menus, postcards, and match boxes. And the food was delicious. The Syrah wine was a really good dry red. We started with the brussels sprouts which were perfectly crispy with Parmesan. I got the Caico e Pepe for my meal and it had the perfect texture and peppery taste (the Saturday special). I tried my friend's peanut chicken salad which was delicious too - you know it's a good place when even the salad is worth getting. Would absolutely come back!

    Ice cream sandwich
    Alexa T.

I really enjoyed my experience here! The service was great and there were great vibes. My friend and I sat outside. We each got 1/2 the chopped salad. We shared onion strings and the ice cream sandwich. Everything was good and solid - but nothing spectacular. I'm super happy I finally got to come here. There are 2 single stall bathrooms in the back to the right of the restaurant.

For my entree, I ordered the vodka rigatoni and a side of buttered broccoli. The vodka rigatoni was really good - liked the flavor and a decent size of pasta. The broccoli was really good for some reason to me. Also tried the truffle mac and cheese which was incredibly rich and tasted great. As a dessert, we had the chocolate pie which was dense, rich, and topped with a huge dollop of whipped topping. I really liked the atmosphere of the place, loud roaring 20s style with jazz playing. Did an earlier dinner on a Saturday with a friend at the bar. We got some similar items, some different. The thing I kept the same was my martinis and all three (sour cream and onion, tomato, and espresso) were just as amazing as ever. Food-wise, I stuck mainly to the classics with one new dish: - Pizza rolls: Very good but 3 pizza rolls for $20 felt small to me. I feel like I remember seeing others served more when I've gone in the past, but not completely sure. They're nostalgic and fun, nothing to die for. - Fries: Great as ever, we opted for just one of the sauces (avocado dill). - French Dip: This used to be cut in 3 pieces and now it's 2. Works well with a duo but I do think it's actually a little smaller now than before when I compare photos. - Samoa sundae: Still amazing, still so so worth. It was fun going with a friend who hadn't been before and seeing the joy upon trying the dish! Bar service is friendly as always and they do a decent job moving you along to ensure the necessary turnover without feeling too rushed.

Let's start with the Lobster and Caviar Roll. Maine lobster, brioche, caviar. It is genuinely one of the best bites I have had in this city, and I say that as someone who eats out constantly. I ordered a second one. Zero shame. Truly an all-timer. The crudo was equally impressive: delicate, pristine, and light in a way that made you want to slow down and actually taste it. The kind of dish that quietly earns its place on the table. Now, the everything bagel Caesar. I cannot overstate this. Everything bagel croutons, warm crispy cream cheese bites tucked in, piles of parmesan. It sounds like a gimmick and it absolutely is not. It is one of the most creative and satisfying salads I have had in recent memory. Ordered it, demolished it, thought about it on the way home. The five cheese pizza rolls round out the meal perfectly. Flaky, cheesy, indulgent without being heavy. Comfort food that actually has a point of view. The room is beautiful, the velvet booths and marble floors deliver that old New York energy without trying too hard, and the service keeps pace with the food. Get the reservation. Get two lobster rolls. Thank me later.

It was our first time eating at a Friedman's location. It had a nice diner feel to it, with a mix of booths and tables. The brunch menu has a variety of breakfast items, salads, sandwiches and burgers, starters, and entrees (fish tacos, grain bowl, fried chicken). I like that several of the items are naturally gluten free, and some can be made gluten free by request. We decided to go with three breakfast items from the brunch menu: I got the shakshuka, my sister got the Nova Benny, and we got the lemon ricotta pancakes to share. All 3 dishes were great. The shashuka came with grilled ciabatta, perfect for dipping into the sunny side eggs and tomato sauce. My sister loved that the poached eggs and smoked salmon of the Nova Benny came on top of a crispy potato latke. The pancakes were fluffy and the lemon ricotta and lemon zest elevated their flavor. Our server was friendly and attentive, and he asked us if we had any allergies when he took our order. He came by several times to check on us and refill water. I would return to Friedman's when I'm in the Herald Square area, or check out one of their other locations in the city.
