What an incredible spot in the West Village! I'd heard the buzz about this restaurant online and about their iconic burger and Peanut Chicken Salad, so of course we had to try both. They were absolutely incredible. The burger truly melts in your mouth, and the Peanut Chicken Salad came in a generous portion, full of flavor and tossed in the perfect amount of dressing. I love this place. Everyone needs their go to spot for American food for the casual night where you just want a solid meal no frills American bar is this spot for me. I have been countless times and will keep coming back. While the food is nothing mind blowing it's always solid. I was visiting New York for a short two day weekend and I stumbled upon this bar and I am so happy I've been thinking about this place for about two weeks. I had the dirty martini and it was the best martini in my whole life. There was a hint of blue cheese in the vodka mix. The bartender was very nice and the vibe was quaint and gave young professional. They are undebatably one of the most underrated appetizers in the game. Pigs in a blanket gotta be 6th man of the year... The 3 of you that consistently read my reviews know that I'm on a quest to find the best steak frites in the city, so when I seen it on the menu I had to pull the trigger. The 8oz hanger steak came with maitre'd butter and some well done thin fries. Not steak sauce on top thank GOD. When a steak comes with steak sauce, one can't help but wonder what they are hiding. What you scared of? Let that steak be eaten for what it is. The steak came medium rare and was cooked PERFECTLY. Fries were good to but to be honest I am a sucker for some thick cut fries or shoestring fries. One extreme or the other... that's personal preference though. I mean everything kind of a personal preference ahahha. We got the check and headed to the Spaniard as one does after a meal in the West Village. Was so excited to eat at American Bar after having cocktails at the bar a number of times and the experience was disappointing. We were a few minutes late to our reservation due to public transportation issues and had to wait in line while others checked in at the restaurant, once we were in front of the hostess she was very rude saying "she was just about to give our reservation away", and that "we need to make sure we are wrapped up by 9:30 because they need the table back". First off none of the above needed to be said, she could have just said "welcome, we will seat you in just a moment" the additional context is just unnecessary and rude! We are sat quickly and our server comes over and takes our drink order and asks if we are ready to order food (this in four minutes after we were sat) we knew what we wanted to order as an appetizer but had not had time to decide on anything else; the server seemed annoyed and told us that we need to put our entire order in, so we all just made a split decision as we felt pressured. Here is what we had and our thoughts on the dishes: Appetizer: - Spinach and artichoke dip (this was really great and I loved the chips that came with it) Main course: - Salmon (very dry and overcooked, also I have never had a restaurant ask me how I want my Salmon cooked) - hamburger (my boyfriend said that it was an overpriced five guys burger at best and that there are better hamburgers in the city) - bolognese (good, but nothing to write home about). The two items on the menu that were actually good are the spinach dip and the French fries. I would recommend coming to American Bar to sit at the bar and have a cocktail and fries, don't waste your time sitting at a table and eating mediocre food. Such a great experience! Food was amazing, probably the best salad (peanut chicken) i've had in a while. The only negative thing I would have to say is that we asked for the dressing on the side and it came tossed but the taste made up for it. And then we ordered the spring rolls and they were so good so flavorful crispy crunchy everything was amazing about them. We wanted to order more but we were very full. The salad is very big so I recommend getting that as your entrée or sharing with someone (please do half versions of all your salads). I then got the Lychee martini which was good, but it wasn't a very flavorful Lychee profile, so not sure if I would order again. Lastly, my friend ordered the espresso martini which was very frothy and all the right flavors. We walked in last night around 6:30pm looking to grab some food. There wasn't tables available but bar was first come first serve. While we were standing there a resy notification for the bar popped up at 7:15pm so while we waited we went across the street to grab a drink and then we asked the host to text us if the bar seats opened up sooner which she did so thank you! Such a great experience here. The atmosphere is so New York. I love the graphics on the menus, postcards, and match boxes. And the food was delicious. The Syrah wine was a really good dry red. We started with the brussels sprouts which were perfectly crispy with Parmesan. I got the Caico e Pepe for my meal and it had the perfect texture and peppery taste (the Saturday special). The atmosphere was vibrant, loud conversational background, low light modern happening place. Service at the bar was amicable, fun, and attentive. Drink within seconds of sitting down and ordering. They are moving at a fast pace but don't seem overwhelmed. Burger and fries came out within 10 minutes during busy primetime dinner. The burger was only $25 bucks and came out a perfect medium rare. So juicy, great portion, and voluminous without being messy somehow. Nice bun approaching but not fully brioche. Soft and pliable without a nice amount of bounce. The shoestring fries were excellent. Really loved the whipped ricotta and the dressing of the salad. For entree split the cod and the salmon. My favorite was the cod- cooked really well and good portion size. I'm re-ranking American Bar after giving it a second shot and this time for brunch. The coffee cake may be the best coffee cake I've ever had and the croissant a close second. Ahh American Bar, the lowkey/highkey, always poppin, dinner spot with friends. I unfortunately made the mistake of booking a res for 6 people and we had 10 (I didn't realize everyone would make it, you know how it is). Jeff, the manager, was super accommodating and was able to sit all 10 of us. We started with the espresso martinis which is supposedly "the best in nyc". It was a solid 9/10 which is pretty good. There was a lot of foam and it wasn't sweet. The spicy margaritas (I'm a connoisseur) we're a solid 7/10. Crab cakes never disappoint, the spicy lobster pasta and the Thai salad are always musts for me. A good spot to catch up with friends or go with a group before a night out. read more

The ambiance and service are standouts at American Bar, but ultimately, the food clocks in somewhere between just okay and good enough for me. I was the second in our little party to arrive and the hostesses knew just where our table was and showed me right over. Nice. We had a round of martinis that were solid but could have been colder with a slightly less aggressive twist expression -- I'm nitpicking a bit here. Real fire in the table lamps is a nice touch. The art and furnishings give the place a real classic Americana vibe. Everyone seemed to be having a good time and the place was abuzz with conversation. The servers are super attentive and I don't think my water glass was ever empty. You know what you're getting menu-wise: it's trendy classics with tons of salad options. We shared two salads and pigs in a blanket to start. The chopped salad was tasty but sadly the Caesar was basically cheese covered romaine leaves and missed the anchovy umami point of a proper Caesar salad. The less said about the pigs in a blanket the better, just salty, shriveled and a bit sad. I went for the lobster pasta which came out piping hot and had enough in tact claw meat to partially ameliorate the disappointment of the overcooked bucatini. The ice cream sundae was an ice cream sundae -- hard to do too much harm there.
