This place is very Davis in my mind. Oh, let's make a fun playful pizza place. And definitely good beer, you need good beer. And I guess we'll throw in some old school candle pin bowling because hey, why not? Very Davis (in the best way). I've grown too used to the $8/beer price range and forgot that good beer can be $5 and that's normal. Flatbreads has a good draft selection (seasonals, regular, ciders, etc), a nice vibe that's great for office meet ups or adult birthday parties or even little kid birthday parties! The pizzas are delicious, and DEFINITELY listen to the specials, that's where they hide all the truly great stuff! read more

YUM!!! I've been here a few times and I am always impressed with their specialty pizzas. I am a hardcore pizza traditionalist - tomato sauce that isn't too sweet and good, melty cheese. But the last time I went I go their Eggplant Parm pizza. It was delicious! The eggplant wasn't fried to oblivion with just the right amount of seasoning. We also ordered the sausage pizza, which I didn't like b/c it was a maple sausage and it added too much sweetness to the pizza. I love being able to see the wood fire oven and watch them move the pizzas around in it. They have a great beer selection, but I can't comment on the wine or cocktails, though the menu has some pretty interesting items on it. read more

These guys get points for atmosphere and for food. I loved the fact that they use 90% local produce! Freshness is key if you're going to get wild with pizza toppings. Also, bonus points for being able to get two different flavor combinations on one large pizza. 'Special' of the night was a "fall flavors" pizza with squash, cranberries, chicken sausage, red onions, mozzarella. Excellent! Good soft crust, great bold flavor throughout, all in all a good pizza pie. Definitely want to come back here for some bowling and a brownie ice cream sundae! The bottom of the pizza was OK, but we ordered the vegan pizza with vegan cheese (which costs $1.75 extra) , and the amount of cheese was so insultingly small that at first we didn't even think there *was* cheese on it. I've already been to the Burlington location and I'm a fan of both. The service might be a little too much but that's better than bad/no service at all. As for the pizza, it's quite tasty. Quite easily the best pizza I've had. Plus, their desserts are yummy! The only downside is that they're sharing space with the bowling alley so it's really loud. For anyone who grew up in this area, the loss of Sacco's Bowl Haven is heart wrenching. Apparently, the owners of Flatbread were sensitive to this and put substantial effort toward creating an interior that is a homage to the historic location: Most of the original alleys were kept including the period lane dividers. The on-alley seating has been replaced with tasteful round booths. The original backdrop has been restored in bright new paint and still bears the "Sacco's Bowl Haven" name. The old benches have been repurposed and are now booth seating. The lanes that were removed have been converted into table tops. The light fixtures in the area that was once the pool room are painted to look like pool balls. The new bar looks out directly onto the lanes. The pizza ovens and exposed duct work are very tastefully done. The formica table that I used to play poker on after hours is still there by the hostess area. Some nice clippings about the alley and the Sacco family have been enlarged and displayed. The pizza itself was mediocre but had potential. My first pie was mushroom and pepperoni. The pepperoni was delicious (some sort of fancy local organic meat) but there wasn't nearly enough of it. Their was a ton of black pepper on the pie which overpowered all other flavors. The dough was very nice and was thick on the bottom like a greek pie. My second pie was cheese and herb. This time the crust was thin and the pizza (which had no sauce) was very dry. My impression was that the ingredients and recipes were good but that the kitchen needed more practice. (This location opened a few weeks ago.) At the moment, the pizza does not live up to the price tag ($12.00 for a small $18.00 for a large with toppings.) Besides pizza, salads are also available but I didn't try one. Waitstaff was also quite green. Our waitress didn't know the liquor menu and special requests seemed to make her nervous. Give this place a few months to get in gear and it could be fantastic if a little hippy-ish. read more

I love the ideals that Flat Bread follows in creating its pizza, but its 4 star pizza to me. The beer menu is also 4 star. What I really loved was the bowling aspect, but that went downhill after we were kicked off our reserved lane. We weren't told that it was only an hour reservation for the lane when we made plans to stay all night and had already spent a small fortune on pizza and beer. I used to want to travel across town to Flat Bread, but now it just doesn't seem as desirable. To end on a good note: The manager/owner is very kind, and seems like a pretty cool guy. read more

LOVE. I LOVE FLATBREAD. Before I moved into Davis Square, my roommates had a farewell old roommate/welcome new roommate dinner at Flatbread. I looked up the menu and thought gross - everything is going to be tasteless because its all organic, gluten-free, farmers market centered, and so on. Being from NYC, that is the last thing I want when choking down a piping hot, cheesy slice. I was wrong! This place is amazing. The specials are great and the beer list is quite impressive. Flatbreads can get loud since it is often packed with people of all ages and Sacco Bowl Haven is located inside. Food is delicious, beer is awesome, service is great, and priced appropriately. Needless to say, my last meal in Davis was at Flatbread as well. read more

Davis Square is a great up-and-coming community. I developed that sentiment when I had a chance to live there a few years ago. There's character, history, and just a coolness factor to it. If you removed Flatbreads from this equation then there would be a gaping void in Davis Square. It's from this perspective where I'll approach this review. Flatbreads does three things well. It runs a good candlepin operation, they offer good pizza, and they do a great job targeting their intended audience. There isn't much to say about candlepin here but that it's fun and to get there early on the weekends or else forget about it. The pizza here is of the thinner type, hence the name Flatbreads. You'll find pizza for nearly anyone ranging from the meat lover to the gluten-sensitive. A large pizza is more than enough for one and a small is a great appetizer for two. Lastly, I feel that Flatbreads epitomizes Davis Square. There's a creative, vintage, and colorful feel to everything. My favorite touch is the childrens' drawings on the menus. I highly recommend you visit Flatbreads if you're looking for something fun. It's hip and vibrant just like the community that surrounds it. read more

We had our office Holiday Party here this year and we had a great time and are already trying to find excuses to come back. We reserved several lanes ahead of time and the staff was very helpful and answered all of our planning questions. We also reserved a table (last minute) for dinner before bowling and the staff was very accommodating and helped us seamlessly transition from dinner to bowling. I'm surprised this place is getting such good reviews. I was there at the end of July. We ordered a few drinks, a lemonade variant and one was mojito-like... both were just OK - strong though - so remember to bring your T pass if you choose to stick around for a second round. And the food? OK, OK - we get it.. Organic.. locally-sourced.. blah blah blah. The way I see it, things should be locally sourced if it makes sense. But taste trumps geography for me. Rum from Maine may (or may not) taste as good as a Bajan rum - but give me what tastes good. And just because it's all organic, doesn't make it taste better. Food and drinks both left me unimpressed, and remember - flatbread is not pizza! It's bread... that's flat. If you're expecting a pizza, you'll be disappointed - so don't do that to yourself. if you want pizza, take a walk over to Posto. If you want a snack while bowling - this is the place. If you want a strong drink that may (or may not) be good, this is your spot. Prices aren't cheap, but aren't overly expensive either. Bartenders and waitresses get busy during the evenings so don't expect to get fawned over! Some of the waitresses are super friendly, though, when they have a minute to stop and chat. Flatbread is my new go-to neighborhood restaurant and bar. Let's start with the bar. It's a bowling lane. As in, they ripped up a bowling lane, varnished it, and turned it into the bar. It's long and wooden and beautiful. Plus, they have a great selection of beers and wines - including organic ones - and sometimes have really yummy mixed drink specials. Love it. Moving onto the dinning area. All the tables are also made of ripped up - and chopped up - bowling alleys. And then there's a big wood-fired stove heating and lighting the dinning area. Makes for a funky, warm ambiance. And the food! Oh the food. The salads don't LOOK any different from any other simple salad, but somehow they end up tasting so much better. I think the secret is the sesame seeds and little seaweed pieces they throw in there. And every pizza I've had there (all the vegetarian ones) have been delicious - perfect thin chewy yet crispy crust. And the fact that right next to all this delicious food and drink people are candlepin bowling? Just gives this place a bit of added uniqueness, boosting it from 4 to 5 stars. read more

First things first...I would come back, I'd bring my friends and family, and I'd tell people good things about this place. So to back up a bit...I had some definite preconceived notions on this joint. I scanned their company Web site and the hippy dippy "feel renewed" crunchtastic content kind had me wary. I apreesh renewable energy and sustainability and the whole nine, but I figured hippies can't cook. Well, happily, I have eaten my words. I also had preconceived notions on this place from the fact it is located in a bowling alley (I don't like bowling and have never bowled here). I expected to see The Dude and Donnie getting a lane when I walked in. It is candlepin bowling, and the interior works really well. Sure it's old, but it has a cool mixture of kitsch, eye candy, retrofitting, etc. Hard to describe, but overall I was impressed and did NOT expect anything like this. I don't even like bowling but I would bowl here. Service was super friendly and attentive without being intruding and awkward. Soda refills were plentiful and I didn't even have to ask. Both our main server and the day manager stopped by during our meal to ask if everything was OK. These are little details that make a good place a great place and this joint had it down pat. Now the pizza...I saw the words "organic", "whole grain" and "nitrate free" all over the menu and automatically thought "NO FUN". I was dead wrong. The wood fired pizza came out crispy and perfectly cooked. We rocked the sausage and mushroom and a sundried tomato and onion and both were great. A small is actually a decent size for one person's lunch. I eat a lot of pizza but the small as well as the salad (also excellent and HUGE) filled me up nicely. Prices are a good value. I would like to go back and try some other pizzas and maybe give the bowling a go. But I'd say this place is a definite must-visit if you're in the area or in the mood for some bowling and pizza with a twist. A good twist. read more

Came here for dinner with my boyfriend last night. It was Saturday night around 7 or 8 and we had no reservations. We expected it to be packed, which it definitely was (hour and a half wait for a table of two!) So, we chilled near the bar until two empty seats popped up right in front of us (within 5 minutes... just as the bartender had been pouring our drinks!) We had already known about the great beer selection from playing some candlepin last week, but last night we went to try out their food. I started with the salad (with added roasted red peppers... yum!) It was a good portion, and the dressing was very tasty. We ordered a large pizza too. Half cheese, half pulled pork (yes! I said pulled pork, on our pizza!) Unfortunately we weren't too familiar with the menu, and we weren't as specific as we should have been while ordering, so we didn't exactly get the pizza wehad wanted. The staff totally took care of it though, and brought us a small pizza that was perfect and wonderful and delicious. Big props to the bartender for checking in on our meal quickly, and fixing our ordering mess-up immediately. The pizza was awesome: great crust, cute slices, fresh toppings. Great pizza. Been to the one in Vermont when was in college. Pizza brought me back to the good old days. Great atmosphere too. Pizza comes out so quick and is always good. Got some very interesting combos but they work. And the candlestick bowl is a lot of fun. A little pricey but I am willing to pay once in awhile to get delicious pizza. Big thing I admire about them is the 100% local. All the ingredients including the beer are local. Pretty cool. One of the best pizza places in Boston, with an added bonus of bowling! I worked here for a year and a half as a host, and I can honestly say that there's not one aspect of this restaurant I can say a bad thing about. Food, service, atmosphere are all on point. My favorite of the pizzas were often the specials - so make sure you ask your server what those are! There are some amazing ones in there, and a lot of the time they use seasonal fresh fruits/vegetables and they're delicious! In terms of the regular menu, I'm a fan of the Kalua pork pie, but I like mine with a twist - goat cheese added on after as opposed to before baking. And on that note, the goat cheese. IS AMAZING. In their pizzas. Or salads. Or alone. As a random thing, I really liked their lemonade - I don't know why but it had a toblerone-esque taste to it and I thought it was delish. Their desserts are great but what you'd expect - if you're craving a brownie, or banana bread, they'll do the job but they're not worth going out of your way for. Bowling is super fun and simple, but don't underestimate how busy this place gets on the weekends. Reservations are only taken for groups of 8+ which means that if you want to go on a whim, expect to wait 1-2 hours+ after putting your name down on a weekend night. But it's super family friendly and a great activity to do with a group of friends/coworkers while munching on one of Bostons best pizzas! read more

My husband and I went Saturday at 5p hoping we would have a chance to bowl and get some pizza afterwards. We soon realized that we would be eating dinner at 5p because the bowling was booked for the rest of the night. Anyways, the pizza is some of the best I have had in Boston. I am not normally a fan of flatbread pizza, but this crust is awesome and the ingredients are top-notch. The blend of flavors in my mouth was beautiful! Been coming to Flatbread for years and loved it-good food and the bowling is so much fun. Went again today with two people and found out they raised their prices significantly. They used to charge per person, per game, meaning the more people playing, the more expensive. This made it affordable for any size group since each person paid the same price. Now they charge $30 PER HOUR regardless of how many people are there. Me and my husband used bowl together a lot, but $60 plus shoe rentals (not even including dinner or drinks) is WAY too expensive for two people. I always brought family here when they visit from out of town, but unfortunately this is too expensive unless the group is very big. Sad to say Flatbread is out of our rotation now. read more

We've been waiting for this place to open for months. Having been to the old Sacco's a couple of times, I've been getting more and more exited about the new Flatbread Pizza Company location, as I've seen them slowly transform a dank, smelly candlepin bowling hall into a cool, relaxing place to get beer and pizza. You can still bowl there, too. We had dinner at Flatbread on July 5th, and though you could tell that they were still figuring some things out just two days after their opening, I had a great experience. First off, the food: There's always something to be said for food cooked on or near a burning pile of wood. Wood-fired pizza is one of my favorite kinds, and it's a nice change from the floppy, ultra-thin crust that seems to be the norm around here. The ingredients are fresh, usually organic, and often locally obtained (some even come from the farmers market that sets up across the street on Wednesdays). It's not the best pizza in the world or anything, but it's good. I like it. The booze: I'm probably most excited about the idea of FPC as a cool place to have a couple drinks. Organic wine, liquor, and beer are starting to show up on more menus these days, and while that's all well and good (healthier poison, I guess), I'm more pleased with the fact that the dozen or more beers on tap are all local, with the furthest brew hailing from somewhere in Maine. Oh, and the fact that they're all $4.50 or $5.50 doesn't hurt. The bowling: I didn't bowl when I was there, but I've bowled at Sacco's before and if anything, the smell has really improved. Being from Michigan, it took me awhile to get used to candlepin, but it's fun. Another plus is that the bar is positioned such that someone sitting there can watch people bowl, which is better than staring at rows of liquor bottles or (in my opinion) a slew of gigantic flat-screen TVs. Bottom line is I've been looking for a default hangout since I moved to Boston, and I think this has the potential. My girlfriend and I are going to coax various friends to join us at Flatbread over the next couple weeks, and we'll see how it holds up. read more

Yum! Between Flatbread and Posto, I am psyched about the new pizza places in Davis Square. We ate dinner there last night and arrived after the kid/family crowd and before other adults arriving for dinner. I thought that it was nice that families with kids and young professionals could all hang out in the same space. We were seated promptly and had a great waitress who was friendly and attentive. I liked the statement on the wall that it was supposed to be a place for everyone to rejuvenate! We had the salad with goat cheese (nice dressing) and the Sausage pizza. It was tasty and in fun, small slices. It was a little loud and I could definitely see how you might have a long wait for pizza if you came in and it was packed, but we had a terrific experience. I would definitely go back and bowl! We will definitely return when we want a fun, laid-back evening. Perhaps one of the coolest features is they offer "half" desserts. Hands down, best pizza in the area. The ingredients are organic, fresh and delicious, and the daily veggie and meat specials are always a great place to start. The salad is big enough to share and delectable, especially with a couple add-ons like goat cheese and beets. And to wash all this wonderful down?- A solid, rotating selection of local beers and liquor. Unfortunately, there is a catch- The service blows. On one occasion we called ahead to put our name on the list and were told it would be 45 minutes. We got there half an hour into the wait and got a drink at the bar. One drink and half an hour later, we went back to the hostess only to find that not only would we have to wait longer, she had absolutely no idea how much longer it would be. We ended up leaving with empty, pizza-craving bellies. On another occasion we were seated and ignored for 30 minutes before we got so much as a glass of water. My suggestion? Go in the afternoon. Sit at the bar. Enjoy the wonderful pizza. If you simply must have it on a weekend night, get take-out. Trying to eat there at peak times is more frustrating than the pizza is delicious. read more

Screw bowling. I come here for the pizza. Back in my hometown we had a Flatbread Pizza place that I'd been to a couple of times and enjoyed. When I moved up to Boston and realized this one was here, I was delighted and quickly made plans to eat there. It did not disappoint. I've been here thrice now, each time with different folks. I always leave happy (and usually stuffed). Their lemonade is great, and I can get my pizza with free-range shredded chicken and kalamata olives. Yum! Their banana bread ice cream dessert thing is also amazing. It's not particularly cheap, but the prices don't make me want to cry either. I'll be back again soon! read more

I had an amazing dinner experience here. I came with one other person at 8pm on a Friday and there was a 20-25 min wait for a table, but we were able to get 2 seats at the bar right away. The drinks all looked delicious and the bartenders were really nice and helpful as I decided - I ended up choosing the Cucumber and Mint G&T, which was amazing. (Their local craft beer selection is big and my boyfriend got a Rapscallion and loved it.) We ordered an organic salad - delicious, Asian flavors - and their veggie special pizza, which had sweet potato puree, dried cranberries and mozzarella/parmesan (I think). SO. GOOD. The large pizza was the right amount of food for my boyfriend and I, and we were both sitting there talking about how this was some of the best pizza we have ever eaten. Their specials run all weekend so I am seriously considering going back today (and tomorrow...) to have that pizza again. read more
