Been coming here on a regular basis for over 2 years now. The guys there are super friendly, food is great and quick, and reasonably priced. Literally all of their pizzas are amazing. I've ordered Royal for multiple parties and every single one of my friends loved them too. Steak & cheese, gyro, chicken kabob, and every other sub I've tried so far has been phenomenal as well. This place is okay. It's food that's pretty quick and okay if it's in walking distance since parking may be a problem. There are a couple of tables inside but it seems like it's all take out. I got a calzone, but it really was more like cheesy bread. A small was fine for two people to share and came with marinara sauce. It tasted fine for cheesy bread, but it was not like any calzone I've ever seen. So overall it was fine for a quick bite, but don't go out of your way. edit and star change: I didn't know different types of calzones made some not calzones. A cheese calzone makes it an entirely different dish? I am not here to help businesses but help other customers know what to expect. If the owner can't tell from a picture what we'd been served, that's a bad sign. If you think *I* am wrong for expecting a calzone to be a standard calzone because that food term has a certain meaning, then that's a bad business view. Pizza was out of 5 about 2.7. I can't say that I was a fan of the pizza however, but I can say that the people who work there were extremely nice and friendly, and the place was not dirty. I found it to be clean just like any other pizza shop I have ever gone to, which is a few although I wouldn't do the pizza again I would certainly be open to trying another menu item. We visited Boston from Maine in November 2023 and December 2024. Both times we went The food was hot, fresh, and really good! I got the Chicken Alfredo and a Three Meat Calzone. Both were the best of each I have ever tried and I've had both from several different places, but none have come close. Not to mention that the staff are incredibly kind and clearly take pride in their food. This has become our favorite little hole in the wall and we eat here at least once every time we go to Boston. Get ready to hear the unbelievable! The eastern European cook who works her cussed me out and then -- you're not going to believe this -- hurled the handset of their phone at me hitting me in the back! True story. I ordered a sub, and Royal used to be my favorite place for subs. (It used to remind me of subs I'd get as a student elsewhere 20 years ago.) I walk in and the guy asks me my name, despite having seen me 100s of times. (They used to remember my identical order everytime, to the point where he'd make it with just a nod from me, no words exchanged.) And so I said my name. He didn't hear it or couldn't understand it, or didn't really want to try. I committed the felony of rolling my eyes at him for this. Boom! The fuse was lit! He gave me my sub and as i began to walk out, his mouth became a sewer of the filthiest cuss words! I turned around bewildered, and said something to the effect of "stfu and try to be polite to your customers!" As I began to turn I felt something hit the back of my shoulder and drop to the floor. It looked like a dinky little remote control probably for the dinky little tv they have in that dinky little place. How did it end up here on the floor? I ask myself in that moment. Ah, he threw it while swearing at me! I couldn't believe it. I picked it up and kept walking out the door. I saw him come out from behind the counter, taking off his grimey gloves, threatening to beat the crap out of me. I ran! Handset still in hand. I saw the second cook (a much bigger dude that'll the scrawny EE guy) begin to follow me on foot, for a good 1/4 mile. Until I guess his voluminous self ran out of steam. (He had been laughing the whole time during the incident, btw.) I got home, cooled off, and enjoyed what is unfortunately going to be the last Royal sub I will ever eat. Returned tonight, 2 years after my first visit and was not disappointed. How convenient this is literally across the street from the Holiday Inn! Ordered a small pepperoni, bacon and sausage pizza which was ready in 6 minutes. The meat was flavorful and generous in quantity, the pizza had tons of cheese and the crust was lightly crispy and medium in thickness...perfect! Originally they said it would take 35 minutes, but when I balked at the order and said I would just get slices instead, they said they could have them ready in 10 minutes and they were! I love my weekly lunch outing to Royals. I order online and walk over from my office and everything is always waiting, always perfect, always yummy. The guys behind the counter could not be nicer or more personable and since I've had my weekly Greek salad with chicken (so so good) they remember me and we always say hi and have a friendly nod because they are so busy getting the rest of their lunch orders ready. I order from here often because it's in my neighborhood. I love the plain chicken wings, they're fried to a crispy golden yummy-ness and the batter/flavor is similar to wings you'd get in a chinese restaurant. We get the chicken kebab sub with fried onions, pickles, american cheese, salt & pep and a little ketchup and mayo on a toasted sub roll and the chicken is always moist and never dry, and they ALWAYS get my order right. We also get the meatball sub which is good. I don't really like their chicken parm because the cutlet they use processed chix instead of chix breast. The fries are decent too. When we're feeling lazy we do delivery which is pretty quick. Ordering on the phone is easy to because they speak English (I'm not trying to be rude but in many of the restaurants in my neighborhood it's hard to order delivery because on the phone they don't understand my street name, Brighton St, and then when the deliverer inevitably calls on the phone, it's impossible to communicate directions and takes forever.) The service is great, when we do pick up we some times sit at the counter and talk to the workers who are always pleasant and friendly. This is my favorite sandwich place in the neighborhood. You're not going to get fancy-shmancy ingredients or recipes but for traditional subs it great. read more

Do yourself a favor: get something with the chicken kabob. The best marinated chicken kabob/tips there are, bar none. Something about the amazing Greek-style lemon-herb marinade and the perfect griddle cooking makes it irresistible. I recommend the Chicken Kabob Salad (with great homemade Italian dressing), the Chicken Bomb, or the Chicken Kabob Wrap. Really can't say enough about how great the chicken is. Honestly Royal hands down has the best steak and cheese in Somerville! This family owned sub shop is great. The staff is always friendly and I'm never disappointed. I ordered fish and chips and was so disappointed that the fish was previously frozen. I called to ask about it an they told me that it was premium haddock filet. When? Before it was frozen? It looked and tasted like fish sticks. Horrible! And they could not care less about my dissatisfaction. I also ordered a chicken finger plate. Those were horrible as well and they sent no sauce. Called about that and they informed us that we MUST request sauce when ordering. But but but...they are chicken fingers. I have to TELL you I want sauce? Okay... I was right across the street for a week from this place and decided to stop in for carry-out one night. I had a 3-meat pizza and order of chicken wings. The pizza was a little greasy, but it was really good. I really liked the crispy crust. I'm glad it was not of the chewy crust variety. There were a great amount of toppings as well for a shade under $10. The chicken wings are breaded, but do not have sauce(which I am fine with as long as they are good). The breading has good flavor and I was a fan of them as well. I liked this place so I came back the following night for dinner as well. I ordered the wings again and got the buffalo chicken wrap. The wrap wasn't anything special but it had a good amount of chicken and had plenty sauce. I liked it. The wings were the same as the day before. This is not a place you really go to to sit down and eat. THey have a few tables, but at least in the summer, I would avoid eating there. It was pretty hot inside so I would not want to sit in there and eat. But this place is perfect for delivery or carryout. read more

I have been ordering food from here for over 15 years. Weekends, weekdays, good weather and bad weather. Never before has it taken 1 hour to whip up a large calzone and deliver it less than 2 Miles away! 30-40 mins AT MOST! I was extremely polite when I called after 40 mins passed to check on my food. I was told the driver just left he will be right there. 20 mins later the driver arrived. Again I was polite as I know the order for his delivery route and the preparation of the food is not on him. I apologized that I was not able to tip him as it took an hour and he seemed surprised and even mentioned they just gave him the food. When I called and asked for the manager Andy; I was told "hun on a night like this..." followed by the excuse that it's been busy and an hour is normal. And when I told him I called and no one said it was busy or took so long he replied "we can not waste time calling out" I said thank you and hung up. I love this place. It is literally right around the corner from me and it's a friendly Mom and Pop place. The food is really good and they deliver FAST! They are always nice on the phone when you place your order. Try the Calzones, they're wonderful. The only negative is they're closed on Sunday. read more
