I took this photo right after the manicure service. I was assisted by Julie, who was very nice and kind. However, I'm not sure she is fully trained in nail care. During the service, it felt like the edges of my nails were torn or handled a bit roughly. As a pharmacist, I use my hands constantly for medication verification, so I was hoping for more improvement, especially with cuticle and nail-edge care, but unfortunately I was disappointed, as shown in the photo. I am changing my review to 5 stars because the manager was SO helpful and kind after a recent concern I had. I really love American Nail Bar and have been coming here for many years - almost 5 years! I especially love how clean it is, how the atmosphere is calming like a spa, the vast variety of offerings, and how the prices are fair and you get a lot for your money. The key is just to find a person you like and as for her every time - my favorite is Julie. Julie gives the BEST most relaxing foot massage, and pedicures! I always ask for her and I wait for days she is available because of the excellent service, respect, and friendliness. I love my most recent manicure (see photo). I have been to about 7 different nail salons in portland this one is by far the best, because of the vibe, the management, the owner is SO nice, and the cleanliness and professionalism I've received. My suggestions after nearly 5 years as a loyal customer: Ask for the same technician every time (best to schedule with them the morning of, or a day ahead). This way you get personalized service and they get to know you, so you can chat during the appointment if you want rather than sit in silence. I am a talkative person so this works for me, but if you prefer silence they are respectful of that too. If you do 2 services at the same visit, you get a discount. If anything concerns you, you can talk to the manager Quan (the Q is more like a W sound) who sits at the front and is super responsive and nice. She will help you if you have questions or anything. Unfortunately, as a longtime client, who always makes appointments, I'm having to find someplace else as they do not adhere to appointment times. The last three times my appointment time has been 15 to 45 minutes late with one of those times having to reschedule to a completely different day, because they again overbooked. They're good and they're nice but they do not prioritize consistent customers with appointments over walk-ins and for somebody who needs to adhere to a schedule, for me, it just doesn't work. When talking to the manager about it I heard every excuse in the world rather than something like "you know what you're right we're sorry and we're gonna work on it" so that's a hard no for me. read more

I specifically asked when I made the appointment do you have a technician that can do Gel X, was told all the techs can do it, ok fine, made the appointment. Arrived on time, ask technician "Do you know how to apply Gel-X", she stated she did. Started out fine, then she noticed something was wrong, took a few off and started again, did this 3 times, on her fourth time, I said "No, just take them all off, this is not going to work". First, she stated my pinky nail was too high for the gel tip (had this process done previously, no problem), then she stated I wanted my nails too long, I initially told her I wanted the nails short. My two stars are due to them trying to make amends, the owner I suppose (male) said we can give you a Gel polish on the house, first I denied because I was so upset, but did not express my anger openly, wanted to display a Christian attitude, but I'm sure my face showed otherwise. After pondering the situation, I agreed to the Gel polish with French manicure since the process of taking them off so many times made them extremely thin and fragile. This review could have been different if she admitted she could not do or was not comfortable doing this process on me, or ask someone else for advice or assistance. I went to this place to get a pedicure for my birthday 7/23/2021. Last week 10/16/22, I had to get my toe nail permanently removed because I got a toenail fungus from this place. Before my pedicure in July of 2021, I hadn't had a pedicure in months and I get ingrown nails. The woman who did my pedi didn't remove my ingrown toe nail properly after she told me she knew how. She then tried to cover it quickly with polish. About a week or so later my toe was hurting and I had noticed that where the polish had grown out my nail was a yellowish white color. When I removed the polish my left big toe was completely discolored. After a google search, I self-diagnosis a fungus. I tried several over the counter meds that didn't work. I eventually went to the doctor and she prescribed me a fungus medication that didn't work either. When I was referred to the podiatrist they told me the fungus had made its way into the root and would most likely cause my nail to always grow back with the fungus and discoloration. So I opted to have the nail removed. The fungus is highly contagious and I knew I was never going to have a healthy nail again. About a month after my pedicure. My dad went to this place, he's a regular, and the woman who was going to do his pedicure was using one the tools to clean her nails. This is a really nice nail place in north portland. They also respond pretty quickly through yelp. That's how I booked my nail appointment. When I walked in, I got checked in pretty quickly and was seated in a chair that was towards the back of the salon. They had some pretty thick plastic shields to protect the customer and employees. Everyone wore masks. Everything looked sanitized and I was asked to wash my hands upon entering. I had a picture of the set of nails I wanted but they didn't have red gems. The lady who did my nails instead brought out tons of gems in different shades, colors, and sizes. We picked out which would work best for my set. She did a wonderful job and I got tons of compliments. The only thing is I would've preferred if they had proper hand rests, I was given powder jars to rest my hand on while she worked on the nails. A friend and I decided to try out this new place today and we both left liking our nails and the service we received. Parking was very convenient- they have a free parking lot right behind their building so finding parking won't be an issue on N. Williams. The only thing that was a bit unprofessional was when it was time to pay, they kept repeating over and over that they preferred cash, even though they accept credit cards. I am incredibly disappointed in this nail shop. I went to the shop due to the 5-stars, but I am not impressed. Let's start with the experience in the shop: when my sister and I arrived one of the owner's daughter greeted us (but I wouldn't use the word greeted). She was very short with her tone and assumed that we knew how to check in despite it being our first time. Then, another daughter put on our water for a pedicure and it was an incredibly hot. It took a really long time for someone to start working with me. When they finally did, they had to pour in cold water so that it was burning my feet. The guy (Devin) working with my sister was incredibly inappropriate. He asked my sister if she was from South Africa (to be clear there is nothing wrong with being from South African, but what is wrong is that he assumed we could not be American since we did not have an Oregonian "accent" as he put it. There 50 states in America which all have black people. His comment would be like me assuming he could not be American because he is of Asian decent). He also kept saying inappropriate, borderline sexual things to her like he wanted to put her in a frying oil like a spring roll. He also kept calling her momma as in he wanted her to be his baby momma which is all kinds of messed up. Im sure because he was so focused on saying inappropriate things, Devin messed up her nails (added a thick layer of coating) and someone else had to shave down her nails so that it wasn't clunky. After paying and waiting for my sister, the same daughter who checked me out and was short earlier came up to me in the middle of a conversation to ask me if I paid. Mind you, she was the person who checked me out and again her tone was incredibly short. Only after I was done with my nails was I asked by I'm assuming the owner if I wanted something to drink although I saw other people were asked when they arrived. As it relates to my nails, I thought they were decent. It was first time ever doing dipping powder. I did think that the person who did my nails was not as careful with shaping my thumbnails into an almond shape, but it was my first time getting the shape so I let it go. I kid you not, less than a week of getting my nails done the powder coating is pushing up and even one nail looks like it is about to peel. For the price that I paid to get my nails done, this is a terrible job. Dipping powder is supposed to last at least 3-weeks, but my nails didn't event hold up for 5-days. I am also concerned about how the dipping coat is peeling as it is directly on my nail and an acrylic that can be pushed off. Definitely not coming back here and wasting my money. read more

Really disappointed with my last visit. My nail lady rushed me by having me pick out my nail color while I had acetone soaking on my fingers. It was hard for me to hold the color options and it kept falling. She kept asking me to pick a color but I honestly couldn't do it until I had both free hands! She seemed annoyed. Then she kept picking random colors for me (I did have a multi-color inspo pic) but normally they give me time to choose! And by myself! Anyways, finally picked out my colors and she only had me put my nails in the LED light for not even half of the amount of time before it ran out. I wanted it to keep cooking because that's what other nail artists have done with me in the past.... But nope she kept rushing me so she could do the next color and again, maybe 10 seconds in the machine. I thought ok, maybe different brands of colors need more/less time than others BUT my shellac nails chipped after 4 days. I can't help but wonder if it's because she rushed the process and didn't do a thorough job. I'm not one to complain but it's sad that I paid 45$ after not having the best experience, and then having it chip less than a week later. read more
