Overall I really enjoyed how my nails looked, the color, the shine, and the length. What I did not appreciate as much was the service I encountered during my time at the salon. The worker who did my nails, I believe their name was Anna, was rough, Intense and not upfront about the price of the service. I do want to include that I am no stranger to getting my nails done, I have been going to a salon once or twice a month for almost 10 years now. However, with most salons they are transparent about the price of the service or tell you about extra costa before you begin your service. When I walked in I asked the person at the counter if I could get a full set. I have gotten a full set at other salons in portland and not been charged extra for gel or not gotten gel. Typically with gel they give you a specific board of color options or a key ring of colors that are different from standard polishes. The color I picked was among all the options and so I didn't know, nor was I told, it would be gel. Once I landed on my color, Anna started doing my nails. It was going well and felt normal until she started to hold my hand flipped from me, essentially twisting my arm for long periods of time while she filed, cut or put the nails on. The service in total rook 1.5 hours, which is fine but felt longer than necessary. At some points when she was drilling my nails down (a process done before applying the glues and fake nails) she drilled so close to the tips of my fingernails it was pressing into my skin. I flinched because it hurt, she didn't ask if I was ok and then kept doing it. I even told her "ow that hurt after she did it for a 3rd or 4th time. After we were done with nails, they made me buy a nail file and buff because that's standard in Portland and I was fine with that. What I wasn't fine with was the fact that there was a hair in the bag they gave me. The nail tech opened the bag multiple times ro use it he file and never even tried to remove the hair before giving me the bag. Again, my nails look great, there was nothing wrong with how they came out but being charged $20 more than the listed price, having my arm twisted and my pain not being acknowledges really dampened my experience at the salon. I am unsure if I will return to this salon in the future. Thanks, SW read more

I wouldn't recommend as I paid for a full service deluxe pedicure $62 and I didn't get my own technician the lady went back and forth between my friend and I so I feel like I didn't get full service and periods of being too hot or too cold and there was a deficient language barrier so I didn't get answers to questions and my hang nails didn't get trimmed off my polish job was less than perfect. read more

Came here excited for my first manicure ever. I don't think the owner realized I was Vietnamese and understood Vietnamese. She made comments to the other workers about my sexuality and made a comment about how cheap I was on my tipping despite tipping 20% after hearing her comments. The other workers were lovely and pleasant and did a phenomenal job on my nails... but the owner really disrespected me and was unpleasant. I was pretty appalled by her behavior and will never be coming back to this place again. read more

This place has gone downhill and I'm upset. I've been coming here for nearly 3 years but recently they don't honor appointments at all!!! Recently they had me wait over 20 minutes. Yesterday I had a 4 PM appointment when I arrived they weren't ready for me so they talked me to getting a pedicure. This person who did my pedicure cut my cuticle so short on one toe I was bleeding and I'm in extreme pain and limping. After the 45 minutes it took for my pedicure they told me I have to wait an additional 40 minutes for the person I had an appointment with to do my nails. Why didn't they call me and tell me that they were running late? Why didn't they tell me this rather than buying time by having me invest in a pedicure I didn't need which ultimately injured me only to have me waiting additional 40 minutes that's almost 2 hours of running late???? Bad management! And zero integrity! They collect your name and phone number when you make an appointment but appointments mean absolutely nothing. That's because they take a walk in appointments off the street and if you had an appointment well that's just too bad you're gonna have to sit there and wait. I'm really disappointed that I'm gonna have to find other places to go and get my nails done. read more

I'm visiting a friend in Portland for the week and needed to get my nails done. It's always hard finding a good nail spot when traveling. I was pleasantly surprised by how amazing of a job they did here !! I got a gel manicure, it's been six days, and it still looks brand new. Its very rare to find a nail salon that does such a good job with Gel and with prices that are extremely affordable. I will definitely be going here again when I'm in town, it's one of the best nails gel jobs I've ever had. I want to note that the staff was extremely nice as well! read more

I picked this place because it had good reviews, these people must have been paid for their reviews. I made a 530 appointment for my friend and I to get mani pedis. She had to wait over 20 minutes for a tech to get to her, and then another tech realized that the original tech who did my pedi did regular polish not shellac. She redid it and apologized, not a huge deal because my friend and I then finished at the same time. However, it was well after 7pm by this point and I said I needed to get going. The tech insisted the manicure would only take 30 minutes, it's now 830 and I'm just leaving with the worst dip job I've ever received and will be going back to my original salon this weekend to get it removed. The tech clipped way too close to the nail bed and didn't clean up the dip so my nails are stuck to the skin. I asked her to clean them and she looked at me like I was crazy even though that's part of the normal process. Steer clear, this place is a MESS. Would give negative stars if I could. read more

They have a great selection of shellac. I also like the mood it's usually quiet and the employees are quite nice. They have a host of options for pedicures and manicures and their rates are reasonable. My nails last for over a month. I also like the digital touch screen to check in. read more

As soon as I got there the person I was working on my pedicure made my tub of water too hot and then to cold and kind of gave me a vibe that wasn't very comfortable or friendly. She kept talking to the owner and was not very friendly. I'm sure there's a language barrier however I had a guide her and how to address my toenails and it just seem that she was more focus on massage than actually working on my toes. She took way too long working on my calves I asked for a pedicure not for a calf massage. By the end I was it was so rushed she kept messing up my toenails by putting the light lamp on the wrong way and i insisted it was it was my fault. I know where my toes are located. I had to keep moving my toes because she kept messing up like I know where my toes are. It was such a waste of my time I wish I never went. Offering to redo to my toes again is taking too much time it's been along time since I got a pedicure and it was just too much time to go back to someplace that I wasn't comfortable in. read more

Just went in today after far too much time reading reviews. I'm really happy with my decision to go here finally. I got a mani from Hannah and she did an amazing and quick job. Not only that, but she was precise and took so much care the whole process through. She was often stopping to grab or snip a loose piece of nail or carefully touching up the parts of polish that bled over my fingers. Excited to have hopefully found a place to return to! I recently moved to this area and decided to get a mani/pedi here based on Yelp reviews. I am so satisfied! Hawthorne Nails is a small, hole-in-the-wall shop, but don't let that discourage you. Seriously, the employees are wonderful. They paid a lot of attention to the work they did today, and I received quite possibly the best foot massage of any nail salon I've been to, and that includes here in Portland and my hometown of Indianapolis. Another reviewer said they didn't have a large selection of color, but I thought they had a normal selection with plenty of colors to choose from. They also have gel polish. Their chairs are comfortable and look newer. The spa-like music they played was relaxing. The prices were right, which made me very happy. They gave me ample time to dry and I did not feel rushed. $30 acrylic set (not including gel polish) $22 for details (gel polish and half moon) bring your own file so you dont have to buy one there currently doing a 30% off all services sale, though the price ended up still being around $40 so, without the discount, I would say more expensive. Usually my nails last for at least 3 weeks without any one falling off, but some some reason two fell off after the first week :-/ I didn't go back to get it fixed because I didn't have time, so I just filed and glued em back on. read more

I have been going here for years as Mary and her niece have done an amazing job on my eyebrows and nails. After today I will probably never go back. Whoever they hired, she did my eyebrows and tried to tell me the reason the one looks super bad is because I have no hair growing. Which is absolutely a lie. I have extremely thick eyebrows and have never had issues with it having sparse hair. I felt her pull the hair out. Kris took my shoulder length hair and cut it into an AMAZING shag. (And provided fantastic conversation while doing it, really they're super cool.) I love it so much! I've gone from a girl who only wore her hair in a ponytail or braids to keeping it unbound. I've gotten so many compliments and I just love the cut -- I can wear it straightened and curly and it looks just as good both ways. I've found the person I want to keep doing my hair, and I will be back!

She responded very quickly to my message quickly when I expressed dissatisfaction with my hair afterward, and offered to redo the color but I'd rather wait for my hair to grow out as it's several inches too short and already has layers of color in it. I arrived at 11am for an appointment that my confirmation said would last until 1:30pm and we didn't finish until 4pm. She did my cut first and then did the baby lights- they added nice color and dimension to the hair as desired. But she then did my roots and combed the color through. While my color was processing, someone arrived for a haircut and had their haircut done while my color sat. Around 45 minutes later, my color was washed out and was darker than I expected- most of the baby lights were no longer visible. She mentioned the color will fade to be lighter as expected, but the result was surprising. I also asked for 2 inches or so to be cut, and mentioned I wanted to be able to put my hair in a ponytail still. When facing the mirror, the length was going great and she showed me it could still go in a ponytail. When turned around, I lost several inches for some reason and there was no going back. She took off even more in the back, and I left unable to put my hair in a ponytail. I'm not sure if there was a miscommunication and she thought I wanted the grow out to be able to be in a ponytail, but I don't think so since she initially showed me she could put it in a ponytail. By 4pm I was tired and hungry and ready to get home- she asked if I wanted to see the hair blown out and styled which I did but just wasn't up for given the 5 hours I'd been there so I said no. There was also another person waiting for their 4pm appointment to start. When I did straighten it at home, I was surprised by my hair. I've gotten cuts that suit curly hair on many occasions and have always been able to wear the cuts straight too. This cut when straight appears uneven and choppy. The transition to the short back is awkward. She'd mentioned that at the end she'd go through and do any evening, cutting of long pieces etc needed but by then, as I'd mentioned, someone had shown up for another appointment at 4 and no additional cutting was done. I'm not sure if it was an off day, if my hair just took a few hours longer than expected or if she typically stacks appointments but things seemed rushed between the clients. I've never had someone try to do a whole haircut while dye sits on and I felt like my dye was likely left on too long due to it which resulted in the darker hair and missing baby lights. I've included pictures of my hair before the appointment length wise, what I asked for, and what I got. Given the many positive reviews, I'd say this could be chalked up to an off experience but given the starkly different results I thought it was worth sharing.

I called a few hours ahead of time to make sure they could do a design that is only slightly more in depth than most (and only on one nail), the gentleman told me they were busy at the time I requested and if I could come 30 mins later. I arrived two mins after my scheduled appt time due to the rush hour traffic and parking. Once I arrived inside I picked out some nail polish colors and noticed that everyone that works there was attending to a client. I then waited another 10 minutes before they had the pedicure chair ready for me to sit in where I then sat for almost an hour to even be touched by a nail technician, sitting in luke warm/cold water. My appointment was at 6 PM and I had asked for a manicure (fill, shellac and design) and pedicure with a design (again on one nail) and didn't get out of there until almost 8:30 PM with only receiving a pedicure with basic nail polish and a design on one toenail, which one of those nail designs was smudged slightly but being on both big toes it's kind of important that they match. I won't ever go back there personally. All this being said, they were very polite (young girl in particular) and apologetic and just because I had a bad experience doesn't mean YOU shouldn't try them out as they have great reviews. It's just, living in a world that I live in which is very busy, I don't have that kind of time to have wasted when I can go somewhere else (I HIGHLY recommend Seduire Nails off SE 52nd and Powell which is where I should have just gone to begin with) and get all that I wanted done in less time than it took Hawthorne Nail Care to do one pedicure. I forgot to mention that it is my birthday this Saturday and I explained that to the gentleman on the phone and as most of us ladies know getting these kinds of things done for a big event is very important to us. Because of the irresponsibility on their behalf I am now forced to rearrange my schedule that was already jampacked to get my desired manicure and fix the mistake they made with my pedicure, as small as it may be I still feel it should have been done right- (I already have my appt with Seduire Nails). I hope this review helps prevent what happened to me today happen to someone else when they have a big event planned. read more

I was taken to Hawthorne Nail Care by my friend who had already been here before, and I had a great experience. I was extremely pleased with my manicure and pedicure. The massage during the spa pedicures is the best I've had in Portland. My nails was done by Chuong. He is so friendly and professional. He really took his time and made sure I would be 100% happy with my nails! I would say my nails/toenails have NEVER looked better! Me and my friends went here for the first time and had our nails done by Mary and Tran. They did an AWESOME job. I had my nail done by Mary and she did very good job and I really love the massage here. You can relax and enjoy the best food/hand massage with the music and wine. If you do gel you need to come here because the gel is last longer than I thought. I will definitely come back. I recommed this place to everyone. They even stay late for an oppointment, so don't worry about your time. read more
