My brother and I came here for dinner on a Saturday, we made a reservation for 5:30pm (during Winter Restaurant Week). We were celebrating his college acceptances. In the reservation note online I asked for a corner table so that we were not in the dining room and they delivered! It was a 3 course dinner for $35 They took our coats and treated us professionally (even though we looked young-highschooler and grad student). For the appetizer, we got the snake river farms wagyu beef carpaccio and the crab and shrimp poppers. They were alright. For Entree, we got a 8 oz filet mignon which came with mashed potatoes (it was delicious but the temperature was a bit off...we ordered a medium and it seemed medium rare) and the 10 oz prime rib which was alright. For Dessert, we got the cheesecake and the bourbon bread putting. The cheesecake was so savory and sweet. The bread pudding was also pretty good--even though I am not a big bread pudding fan). I had the cheese steak appetizers which were very salty. I had the Blue Cheese Wedge salad. My food was mediocre at best. The salad was pretty uncreative, light on the bacon and blue cheese. My gluten-free friend had a difficult time even choosing much on the menu. We found that all the marked gluten-free dishes were fried in the same fryer as the gluten items, she would have been in bad shape if she had followed the menu. Luckily, our waiter was extremely vigilant and kept checking with the kitchen to see what she could have. The only stand out was the chocolate flourless cake, which was superb! As for ambiance, when we arrived one other couple was there, and when they left we were the only ones in the whole restaurant. It was very strange indeed. Honestly American prime should be called American subprime. I've been here on a few occasions and you come in hoping for a bull market but you end up with a bear. I was underwhelmed when they first opened. I tried their restaurant week a few years back. Even though they have the smallest meat aging space (our front to show the customers). There's like one piece of meat in it. I recently did not see many "aged" items on the menu either. So I was forced back due to an event. The service was strange, at best. First, they had a heavy handed pour and were pushing drinks. They used this weird old iPad thing where the cover didn't match the version of the iPad they were using. Then, it lead you to think you needed to order on the iPad but nope, you tell the wait staff. So why even use this kludghy iPad?!?!? Then my friend asked if what she ordered was dairy free (to confirm). The response she got was "sure... whatever." My prime rib looked like it had been dancing or sloshed around the plate the entire night before it got to me and it was lukewarm at best. Then there was the food... "chef mike" (the microwave) seemed like he was on duty. Of the people who ordered the prime rib. It all came out well done except one. One was still frozen in the center. I ordered medium rare and it was a weird dark gray color. Not from cooking. But from steaming under the warming tray it was so evident they couldn't handle the 40 people in the room. The prime rib was exceedingly salty. Then there was the "au jus". I said no to the au jus and the staff just poured it over my dish... but it was a food thing... it washed away some of the salt. Loved this place! My friends and I came here for dinner a few days ago, on a Tuesday evening. There are parking spaces in the back parking lot; also, they do offer free valet parking (tip: remember to have some cash to tip them--I didn't, so I parked in the back). There weren't many people eating inside, but we had reservations so we were seated right away. As you enter, the bar area is on your right--it has a sports bar feel to it, with some seating outdoor as well. To your left is the more sit-down restaurant feel--seemed more classy. Our server, Doris, was amazing--super friendly and attentive to our needs. She told us that the restaurant is fairly new--opened about two and a half months ago. The food was amazing. For appetizers, we got the Maryland lump crab and shrimp poppers--pretty yummy! I ordered the 12 oz. house-smoked prime rib--delicious--it was cooked perfectly. I tried my friend's jumbo lump crab cakes, and they were pretty good--loaded with crab meat and barely breaded. I loved the side dishes--we ordered the kimchi fried rice (tip: add bacon, it's amazing as an addition), braised Brussel spouts, and the mashed potatoes (it comes with roasted bone marrow butter!!). For drinks, I ordered a mojitos, which was made perfectly. We ordered some rounds of shots--they came with a good amount of alcohol, well worth the price (about $10-12ish per drink). Pretty terrible experience overall. It was a beautiful night, so we sat outside. The inside & bar was pretty much empty. We ordered two Manhattans at the bar waiting for one more party. They were extremely sweet, more like a Shirley temple. Table service was very slow. It took about 15 mins to get the first round of drinks. It was downhill from there. Ordered two Stoli dirty martinis on the rocks. They came out neat and disgusting. Overly dirty to the point they were undrinkable. Had they been ok, we would have overlooked the fact they weren't on the rocks. We sent them back. 10 mins later, they came out again, neat. They were sent back again. Third time is a charm. They were served with olive juice on the side because they can't make a dirty martini. Switched to wine. Can't screw that up. The food was rather good as compared to the service. Steak and Grouper were nicely prepared. The sides were smaller than expected, but good. There were a lot of excuses and apologizing for the slow service. The kicker was the bill. Soli Dirty Martini - They served Stoli Elite instead of Stoli which is twice the price. + $2.00 charge for olives and $3.00 charge for ice for each. My wife asked for dressing for her Caesar salad, $1.50. Ordered Frangelico with our coffee, $3.00 added for neat pour. All in all, over $20.00 in additional charges for ridiculous add ons. When the manager was confronted, he explained everyone does that. My wife and I have traveled a lot for both business & personal purposes over the last few decades. We dined at many of the finest restaurants this country has to offer in about 35 states. I have only seen these up charges In Miami Florida about 20 years ago. That place went out of business 19 years ago. To say the least, locally, Eddy V's, Capital Grille, Fleming's, and Morton's don't practice these dishonest upcharges. Wife and I went to American Prime in Tysons Corner area for our date night last Friday. First time here and I don't know how we've missed this place for so long. The prime rib was extraordinarily delicious, perfectly tender and juiciest cut I've had. The cowboy corn was savory, the perfect blend of corn, cheese, and spices. I would caveat that some items I found are overly smoked, but that's my own preference. It is tucked away in an office park a mile or so from Tysons I and II, and I saw comments on Yelp or Opentable that it was difficult to find. I had no problem finding it. Lovely. Our waiter (and eventually the manager) were both excellent. The issue was the food. Husband started with the French onion soup, which he deemed as "ok" - onions...cheese...and salt. Lots and lots of salt. I would not have minded some of that on my wedge salad...or any flavor for that matter...where was the dressing? Back in the kitchen apparently. Even the "blue cheese" scattered around the plate- which I suspect was the really cheap kind that tastes like tofu with fake blue "veins" was flavorless. Like like picked up each individual piece of cheese to taste it by itself and...nothing. Next came the prime rib with my husband again deemed - ok. Not great, not bad, just...ok. I got the steak frites ordered medium well (you may commence snickering) which was nicely charred on the outside and completely raw on the inside - like cold raw. I sent it back and the waiter (who really was great) apologized and said the new sous chef was "nervous"...huh? If you're hired to be a sous chef at a high end steak house and you can't cook a medium well steak...I suppose I would be nervous too. I opted to have the steak taken off the check and watched my husband eat his birthday dinner alone (by the time my dinner was ready he would be finished anyway) and opted for my daughter's leftover dim sum at home (which were really good btw - shout out to A&J in Rockville!) and the manager also comped our drinks (excellent drinks at that) which was a very nice gesture... Tucked into a kind of courtyard surrounded by office buildings this is a nice spot separated from the hustle bustle of Tysons with lots of heated outdoor seating. The wait staff was great, very attentive and nice. Unfortunately the food simply isn't very good, which is especially unfortunate given the prices. We started with a crudités plate, which had about 25 slices of not-especially-fresh vegetables, two different kinds of hummus that were delicious, and a large pile of flatbread. Kind of ok. I got the signature prime rib, medium rare, with creamed spinach and a Caesar salad. The prime rib was rare, chewy and unseasoned, slightly smoky on the outside edge but basically inedible unless you like chewing on bland raw meat. The au jus that came with it had no more flavor than water. The creamed spinach was a bowl of molten cheese, cream and fried shallots with spinach flavor, which would have been good as an appetizer with bread, but impossible to have more than 2 bites on its own. The Caesar salad had a few crisp pieces of lettuce buried under a pile of shredded cheese, bland dressing, and no anchovies. Perhaps it is a preference thing but I expect food to have flavor and for vegetables to be fresh and taste like vegetables. Maybe it is a steak house standard to try to see how much fat you can cover your vegetables with but I find it beyond unappealing. Pretty low-key steak place for the area. I will say the inside is super small and simple in the main room but I noticed that they do have a separate room for bigger parties. The food itself is pretty good but nothing outstanding. The fillet mignon was cooked really well and it was tasty. However J Gilberts is way better!! Also for the sides serving size that they gave is way smaller than other steak places. The mushrooms were delicious the brussels sprouts were pretty good, and the mashed potatoes were really yummy. Real patio space with good furniture and a mesmerizing firepit -- not a tent in a parking lot. Found this place on OpenTable. It's a little bit off the beaten path on the bottom floor of an office building, however do not let that dissuade you. Hassle free parking and I would love to visit this place on a nice warm sunny day and experienced the patio at night time. Important thing is the food. I'm a little picky when it comes to my steaks and this place did not disappoint. I usually stay away from prime rib due to the amount of fat, however since it was their signature steak I decided to give it a try. it did not disappoint, in fact I was extremely impressed. They smoke their meat and the flavor was incredible. Very little fat except on the outsides which is normal near the crust. The cut I got was so perfect that I didn't need any of the dipping sauces or salt. I'm 160 pounds and the 20 ounce was a challenge for me, especially since most of it was delicious tender meat. The deconstructed baked potato was unlike any other baked potato I've had before. It was not greasy even though it's baked and fried. I got the traditional Cobb wedge and it was the perfect size. Prices are very reasonable compared to other high-end steakhouses and I'll go here over Morton's any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Staff was incredibly friendly which definitely added to the overall experience. Our waiter was excellent and wasn't just feeding us lines. He knew the menu and cared about our visit. If I'm being critical, the only thing I could've done without was the 90s grunge music. A background track of some thing light and instrumental would definitely add to the ambience. The prime rib is suuuuuuppppeerrrrr smokey-aromatic and has a very light savory-sweet rub on the edges. Rich, tender, and the most flavorful steak I might have ever had. Comes with a tasty horseradish paste that is not too punchy but adds just enough sass. Also, I've never tried this but have been told you can order a 20 oz. off-menu! The bone marrow mashed potatoes are very rich and buttery, and work excellently to sop up steak juices (because I have no shame). The creamed corn has giant chunks of salty-crispy thick-cut bacon, really great texture and flavors. We came here for Restaurant Week and tried the Signature Smoked Prime Rib. I have to say, I haven't had such a good steak for a while! Especially, I just went to Fogo De Chao the night before for Restaurant Week as well and the meats were not nearly as tasty as Prime Rib. The smoked flavor really makes an otherwise boring steak interesting and I ordered medium which I would expect to be a bit dry but it actually turned out to be very tender and juicy! I got bread pudding for dessert and it was delicious and comforting, without being too sweet. My husband and I stumbled across this restaurant during restaurant week and decided to give it a show since it was new and in Tysons Corner which isn't too far from where we live. We used GPS to get there and still almost missed the restaurant because it's tucked back in an office park area. There was valet parking, which we used because we didn't know any better, but realized that they were just going to park our car in the spaces right outside there and should have just parked ourselves. We tipped the valet guy after dinner, but told him that we would just walk to our car instead of him going 20 feet to get it. The décor in the restaurant is very nice and you see some of the meats being cured when you walk in, very modern and kind of hip. We got seated right away and there weren't that many others in the dining room on a Sunday evening, which was surprising, especially since it was restaurant week. We ordered a chacutterie board to start with and did 3 meats and 2 cheeses. It also came with fruit, bread, and some other stuff....very nice and plenty of food for my husband and I to share. For our entrees, he got the prime rib (which is their specialty) and I went with the filet. My filet was good and cooked fine but the prime rib stole the show. They smoke it and season it to perfection. My husband and I both said that it was the BEST prime rib we've ever had! Our server was good and we had a great experience and knew we'd put it on our list of favorite restaurants to visit. We went back a month or so later on a Sunday evening around 6pm and we were the only people in the dining room. Not only were we the only people there when we arrived, but still the only folks there when we left. For us, that means we got undivided attention and had the place to ourselves, but it worried us that it was so dead on a Sunday evening. But the food was still amazing. We both got the prime rib and a side of their mushrooms and they were both out of this world. The traditional sides of stuffing, brussel sprouts, creamed corn and creamed spinach were devoured by our crew. My wife and I came to the restaurant to celebrate her birthday. When I made the reservation the hostess asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. Not everybody does that, but I like it. The interior of the restaurant is very tasteful and feels very high quality. Our service was fantastic throughout the entire evening! Our waiter was humorous and helpful. We started with charcuterie and ordered a bottle of white (our server was helpful in picking the right bottle). The charcuterie was fantastic and much more food than we expected! We were also treated to two complimentary crab cakes which were very nice! Great sauce and served on top of a fried green tomato. Our main dishes were great too! I ate lunch here today and I loved it! I had the crab and shrimp poppers and the pastrami sandwich. While I agree with another yelper about the need for less mayo in the poppers, they were still tasty. The star of the day was the pastrami. Tucked away in a business complex (much like many of the other steakhouses in the Mclean/Tyson's area), the only thing American Prime has going for it is easy parking and readily available tables. Our large party (Go Shorty, it's your birthday!) was able to get a reservation on a Friday evening, and add persons to the table at the last minute, all within a few days and with no problem. I suppose we should have known that such easy reservations and change of reservations was a harbinger of things to come. While service seemed pretty good at first, things quickly went downhill as complimentary bread went un-replenished (even after asking) and temporary power outages made for a minute or so if darkness while we ate. Literally the lights went out and flickered for a minute and the servers just brushed it off as if it was usual. What kind of shoddy place is this? No apologies, no asking if everything is alright, just a quick, "Oh we're going through some issues, it'll be back on in a few." Being that this place is known for their prime rib, many of us of course opted for the the 16 oz "Specialized House-Smoked Prime Rib." Certainly the "smoked" flavor of the prime rib was unique and interesting, definitely not bad, but not great either. It was just good. I'd rather have a prime rib with a nice crust all around, hot pink in the middle, and closer to hot than to warm. Unfortunately, the only thing this prime rib delivered on was the smokiness of the flavor. The worst part was that we all ordered 16 oz, and mine looked much less than 16 oz. When I asked the server if this was 16 oz, the server barely glanced at my plate and said "yes" before moving on to do other things. How about at least feigning the possibility that it might not be, and go back to check with the chef, or anything else. I was basically brushed off as if I was a cheap-skate trying to get an extra 4 oz beef that I ordered. Well that quickly soured the rest of the night. Service continued to be hasty and without utmost respect for their patrons. For a steakhouse with $$$'s, I would expect nothing less. Sure this isn't top tier $$$$ steakhouses of DC, but it's in the price range and tiers of the Ruth Chris and Capital Grille, both of which I've had much better steaks and service. All in all, I will definitely not be back. I barely even mentioned the $9 glass of Dogfish head 90 Minute IPA that was absurdly overpriced. The only saving grace (worth an extra star, otherwise this would have been a two-star review) was that they had no "corkage" fee for BYOC (bring your own cake) as is common with some of the higher-end restaurants. We had a cake brought in for our friend's birthday, and they served it no problem. I suppose we saved some money there. TL;DR: Unless you're really into "smoky" prime rib, I'm sure you can find better prime rib elsewhere in the area for the same price. Hit up any of the usual steakhouses and you'll be fine. Service is sub-par for a $$$ steakhouse, but if you're in a pinch you can likely make a reservation (because their business doesn't seem to be doing well). read more

After reading the reviews here, I had a lot of high reviews for this place. I came here for Restaurant Week for the first time. Sadly, the appetizer and desert where not up to par. We got the salad for our first round but, despite having dressing on the salad, it was super dry and not tasty at all. My main entree - prime rib, is one of the reasons why I give this place 3 stars - it was the only thing that I ate that night that I liked (the other reason was the service). The desert was very average, not amazing at all - kind of like what you can find in any supermarket. The cocktail selection was not amazing either in terms of vodka based options. I think what is not helping American Prime is that there are many local businesses in the same cuisine category and star level that have much tastier food such as Eddie V and Trio in Merrifield (and better drink selection). The service and ambiance of American Prime is similar to those 2 restaurants but sadly the food doesn't match in taste to them. Overall I do recommend for others in the area to come try American Prime for themselves at least once and make a choice for themselves as the service is great and the location as well. read more
