My wife and I came to the restaurant to celebrate her birthday. When I made the reservation the hostess asked if we were celebrating a special occasion. Not everybody does that, but I like it. The interior of the restaurant is very tasteful and feels very high quality. Our service was fantastic throughout the entire evening! Our waiter was humorous and helpful. We started with charcuterie and ordered a bottle of white (our server was helpful in picking the right bottle). The charcuterie was fantastic and much more food than we expected! We were also treated to two complimentary crab cakes which were very nice! Great sauce and served on top of a fried green tomato. Our main dishes were great too! I had the prime rib, which was cooked to a perfect medium rare and topped with a delicious sauce. For sides we had the brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes topped with a bone marrow sauce. I ate lunch here today and I loved it! I had the crab and shrimp poppers and the pastrami sandwich. While I agree with another yelper about the need for less mayo in the poppers, they were still tasty. The star of the day was the pastrami. They smoke all the meats in house and you can definitely taste the quality. I'd love to order a few pounds to take home for later and save the trip to DC, as the was better. I'm also pleased to say, the service is on par with the food. I don't recall my waiter's name (formerly of Clyde's), but his customer service was top notch. Tucked away in a business complex (much like many of the other steakhouses in the Mclean/Tyson's area), the only thing American Prime has going for it is easy parking and readily available tables. Our large party (Go Shorty, it's your birthday!) was able to get a reservation on a Friday evening, and add persons to the table at the last minute, all within a few days and with no problem. I suppose we should have known that such easy reservations and change of reservations was a harbinger of things to come. While service seemed pretty good at first, things quickly went downhill as complimentary bread went un-replenished (even after asking) and temporary power outages made for a minute or so if darkness while we ate. Literally the lights went out and flickered for a minute and the servers just brushed it off as if it was usual. What kind of shoddy place is this? No apologies, no asking if everything is alright, just a quick, "Oh we're going through some issues, it'll be back on in a few." Being that this place is known for their prime rib, many of us of course opted for the the 16 oz "Specialized House-Smoked Prime Rib." Certainly the "smoked" flavor of the prime rib was unique and interesting, definitely not bad, but not great either. It was just good. I'd rather have a prime rib with a nice crust all around, hot pink in the middle, and closer to hot than to warm. Unfortunately, the only thing this prime rib delivered on was the smokiness of the flavor. The worst part was that we all ordered 16 oz, and mine looked much less than 16 oz. When I asked the server if this was 16 oz, the server barely glanced at my plate and said "yes" before moving on to do other things. How about at least feigning the possibility that it might not be, and go back to check with the chef, or anything else. I was basically brushed off as if I was a cheap-skate trying to get an extra 4 oz beef that I ordered. Well that quickly soured the rest of the night. Service continued to be hasty and without utmost respect for their patrons. For a steakhouse with $$$'s, I would expect nothing less. Sure this isn't top tier $$$$ steakhouses of DC, but it's in the price range and tiers of the Ruth Chris and Capital Grille, both of which I've had much better steaks and service. All in all, I will definitely not be back. I barely even mentioned the $9 glass of Dogfish head 90 Minute IPA that was absurdly overpriced. The only saving grace (worth an extra star, otherwise this would have been a two-star review) was that they had no "corkage" fee for BYOC (bring your own cake) as is common with some of the higher-end restaurants. We had a cake brought in for our friend's birthday, and they served it no problem. I suppose we saved some money there. TL;DR: Unless you're really into "smoky" prime rib, I'm sure you can find better prime rib elsewhere in the area for the same price. Hit up any of the usual steakhouses and you'll be fine. Service is sub-par for a $$$ steakhouse, but if you're in a pinch you can likely make a reservation (because their business doesn't seem to be doing well). read more

After reading the reviews here, I had a lot of high reviews for this place. I came here for Restaurant Week for the first time. Sadly, the appetizer and desert where not up to par. We got the salad for our first round but, despite having dressing on the salad, it was super dry and not tasty at all. My main entree - prime rib, is one of the reasons why I give this place 3 stars - it was the only thing that I ate that night that I liked (the other reason was the service). The desert was very average, not amazing at all - kind of like what you can find in any supermarket. The cocktail selection was not amazing either in terms of vodka based options. I think what is not helping American Prime is that there are many local businesses in the same cuisine category and star level that have much tastier food such as Eddie V and Trio in Merrifield (and better drink selection). The service and ambiance of American Prime is similar to those 2 restaurants but sadly the food doesn't match in taste to them. Overall I do recommend for others in the area to come try American Prime for themselves at least once and make a choice for themselves as the service is great and the location as well. read more

Love the happy hour here and the bartenders are so sweet! I live right around the corner but I do think it's a hidden gem. Every time I go there it isn't too crowded and I love getting the egg rolls, one taste kinda like a stick wonton and the other is a savory cheesesteak! As a professional party planner, I am always looking for new venues to host my clients events. American Prime fits this bill. The outdoor terrace has several fire pits. A medium size banquet room and some private dining areas can easily accommodate large numbers of guests. What sets this apart from most restaurants, is the food. The smoked prime rib is simply the best that I have ever tasted. Growing up, I have always hated the taste of Brussel Sprouts but the Brussel sprouts at AP were ridiculously delicious! Make sure you try the Guinness cheesecake and Butter cake....wow! After a few visits, the owner Joon took me on a tour of the facilities. There is a secret membership only cigar bar (Club IV), that even has a cool "Speakeasy" door. There is only word-of-mouth advertising that ensures the membership remains exclusive. This area is a total man cave with sexy bar maidens waiting on you. The ladies are lovely and the atmosphere is really outstanding. The wine selection is also outstanding and they do not mark up the bottles like most restaurants do, especially for the Tysons Corner area. That being said, I ordered the NY Strip steak with bone marrow sauce and it was cooked perfectly but it was mainly fat and the actual meat part of the steak was so difficult to cut that the table actually shook as I tried to put my knife through it. First time visiting American Prime last night -and I was pleasantly surprised . I've never heard of American Prime but chalk that up to the various nearby steakhouse competition like Eddie V's , Capital Grille and J.Gilbert as distractions . It is a small , quiet restaurant at the base of an office building on or off of Tyco road. The outdoor dining in front with a large fire pit had several diners , even in the cold. We enjoyed a large corner booth inside, not too far away from the bar. Our servers were polite and helpful with a few menu adjustments/special dietary requests that the three of us ladies presented. The food was really good, full of flavor and the sauces were all unique. We enjoyed the crab cake , cauliflower gratin, wild mushrooms , salmon , deconstructed prime potato and the butter cake for dessert -which is a must order! They make a great Manhattan cocktail , very strong -I only ordered one! We overheard several individuals coming to enjoy a private , members only cigar lounge in a separate part of the restaurant . So my wife and I stopped in for a quick bite. Sat at the bar had a few drinks and shared an Aged NY strip. I asked for the steak to be slice so my wife and I can share it and what we received broke my heart. I think what they did was slice the steak and tried to cook each slice. It was dry, uneven cook, unseasoned, everything you would imagine when you do that to a steak. Not exaggerating , one of the worst steaks I have ever had. I guess what I'm most disappointed in is myself. I know steaks and I should said something immediately but didn't. Not sure why I didn't as I have no issue sending steaks back especially at $49. This place is awesome! Food is amazing and staff is very friendly. Try the mushroom crusted steak!!! I've been here over a dozen times and realized I've never written a review, because I'm normally caught up in conversation at the bar before I head out. Highly suggest you try the smoked wings, kimchi fried rice, and the butter cake dessert. The gnocchi is also great. If you're a cigar smoker, there is a private cigar bar in the back that is worth asking to check out. Between the friendly staff and great food you can't go wrong. So, first, this place is in a weird office park - that certainly takes what would be a significantly nicer place and makes it a bit odd. On the inside it looks like an upscale steak house, but as you walk in and out, you are reminded that you're in the middle of nowhere. Food: quite good. I had a rare filet - it was delicious. Everything on the plate was very tasty, and I was very happy with my choice. The key lime pie was tart and tasty for dessert. Drinks: BIG wine pours - this is a plus, as the glasses would be overpriced if it weren't for that. Cocktail list was not bad, but I'm not sure every place needs twist on classic cocktails. If you're a classic steakhouse (as this is) just serve a really great martini, manhattan, old fashioned, etc. I thought the drinks were just fine. Came here for Happy Hour, food is very mediocre. Ordered burnt tips, disgusting. Wings over cooked, and a few other things. I would say the sauce for the mussels, probably the best thing from the menu that night. Service was terrible, took over 30 minutes to just bring our drinks. Still waiting to hear back from the manager. Our party stayed their until closing, I left some very expensive sunglasses there. I'm pretty sure the waitress pocketed them... Shocking, because she got a pretty hefty tip. Called the following morning, spoke to someone that sounded like she could be less bothered, told me she would ask around and speak to the manager, still waiting to hear back. This was our first visit to American Prime. We got there at about 4PM on a Thursday. I believe we were the only ones in the dining room, however, on they way out the bar area was pretty busy and the outside seating was pretty full. We each had the prime rib and shared the deconstructed potatoes and mushrooms. The hubby had the smoked wings and he really liked it. I had the crab dip which was really good too. Another spot we tried during DC Restaurant Winter Week. This spot is in an office building and there is nothing else around it (might be that the building itself is new). It is not everyday that you get served by the executive chef himself. His touches made our visit more special, despite a few hiccups in the service. He told us that this location is only 1,5 years old. Going in, it has a cozier feel than your typical steakhouse. However, the large dining room that we were in had no windows and the wall decor wasn't sufficient to keep things interesting. The appetizers: Our beef carpaccio came out completely frozen, to the point we couldn't scrape off the plate. When it was fixed, I felt like while the beef itself was very tasty, I didn't get any of the truffle oil and felt the need for some acidity. I would have preferred arugula over the tasteless microherbs. The crab-shrimp poppers were nicely seasoned and rich with flavor, liked the roasted corn. The distinct smell when you enter the restaurant is probably their smoked prime rib, which is what I had. Even if you don't care for prime rib, you should try it for the juis. I loved the horseradish but felt like this dish should come with a side. The filet was very good. The desserts: If you love Guiness beer, try the chef's special cheesecake. I picked this place for our Anniversary dinner this year. I yelped many places and wanted to try somewhere different, that wasn't a chain. For entree, we had the smoked prime rib and the cowboy ribeye. The sides are a la carte so we chose wild mushroom medley, bone marrow mashed potatoes and the duck mac and cheese. Both prime rib and cowboy ribeye came exactly as ordered, medium, and the flavor was outstanding. My husband rarely compliments food but he actually raved about how great his steak tasted! I loved the mushroom medley (my hubby doesnt like mushrooms) so I had it all to myself. The mashed potatoes was creamy and tasteful. Our only complaint was with the duck mac and cheese. It was kind of dry, not creamy or saucy enough and not much flavor. The idea is great but the execution just wasn't there. We did tell our server and he explained that it was a new item they just added so maybe they are still working the recipe. I mean we still ate it though. We were stuffed from all the food but still wanted to try their desserts so we opted for the butter cake and bread pudding. Both were big portions so had to take half to go. Came out nice and warm topped with ice cream which made them even more yummy. They had a brunch menu displayed on the table which we asked about because we knew the kids would love this place too and we would totally bring them for brunch. I was here with couple of friends to participate in the restaurant week! Coincidentally they offered 3 items to choose from so we decided to order all of them for variety! (Except for the salmon entree. One of us is a chef, and it was recommended that salmon is not really worth trying since this place is famous for their smoked ribeye.) Appetizers: we had beet salad, asian pork belly on steam buns, and crab & shrimp poppers. Beet salad could have been better if they had more beets haha. Our favorite was the crab & shrimp poppers. It's got that stringy crunchy fritte thing outside which went very well with the crab & shrimp stuffing. Pork belly was definitely korean style, served with some kimchi! Entree: we ordered 2 signature house smoked prime ribs and a filet mignon. Smoked ribs were very tender and juicy, it had a very slight char taste. Filet mignon was a bit too salty for my taste, but meat overall was tender and cooked perfectly. Dessert: we tried key lime pie, homemade bread pudding, and guinness cheesecake. Our fav was the guiness cheesecake, it wasn't as heavy as the normal cheesecake. It sat on a oreo crust! Delicious! This was well worth a try especially during restaurant week as it was only $35 per person! Hands down this place is good. It's far yet, good. I totally had a reservation for 8:45pm but due to traffic I arrived at 9pm. Thank goodness it wasn't crowded. I didn't like the seating choice but, if it's per the hostess looking at the opentable seat chart then sure. Everybody needs a fair shot at earning their tips. Our waiter was amazing. Literally, his level of professionalism reminded me of Mastros. And I live for Mastros. I had the crab and shrimp poppers and they were amazing. I wanted more. Like literally. The prime rib was good as well, pretty fatty but it's expected. Lastly for dessert I had the cheesecake and I was so happy with my choice. I wanted more of that too. However, I was pleased with my experience. The reason they had to get 4 stars is because I so wanted to valet my car...yet after waiting for 3 mins I wasn't approached and I had to self park. A must for cigar smokers. Indoor smoking lounge is fantastic. There is a charge to join, but outdoor patios provide another area for puffing. Happy hour is 4-7. Food and drinks discounted. Domestic bottled beers are $3. Cocktails range from $7 to $9. Ordered burnt ends ($8) and pulled pork sliders ($7). Wonderful. I'll definitely keep those items in my regular rotation. I was a little confused on how to enter this place because it's a little disguised with the construction going on, but i'm glad I kept looking for the place because its worth a try. I came for lunch with my dad and Jewels, i believe that was her name, was super attentive and really friendly. My dad is a regular but she approached our table with a big smile! I tried the salmon salad and put the dressing on the side. I was worried about whether I would like the dressing but it was good. Perfect, with the cucumbers, green beans, and mixed greens. Easily some of the best service I've ever had! My boyfriend and I came here to try American Prime during Open Table's BBQ and Grilling week (hoping to score a deal). However, everything looked so good, we ended up ordering off the full menu. My boyfriend had the Smoked Duck and Gnocchi, which was a great portion size and very good (I had a few bites of course). I had the Watermelon Feta salad (delicious!) and a side of the House-Made Gnocchi (can you tell we like pasta?). We both enjoyed our meals, but what we enjoyed most was the phenomenal service. I feel like recently I've lowered my expectations of service at restaurants but American Prime raised the bar! Our order arrived quickly, and we had multiple servers ask if we needed anything during the meal. My boyfriend was stretching at one point and someone came to check if he needed something! For a couple that's usually flagging down our server this was such a nice change. Full transparency, it was a Wednesday, but the restaurant was plenty busy, so I think this is a reflection of the service all of the time. As for the app, I ordered the crab fritters, it was different, and actually pretty good. I like the sauce it came with. Def awesome for the bread. The bread was soft and warm. The prime rib didn't come with any sides, that was disappointing. I would like some veggies to go with the meat. Overall, the service was okay, the prime rib was alight, nothing too fancy about it. the dessert was pretty good, ice cream with bread pudding. Who decided to give this restaurant to try during restaurant week. And we were not disappointed at all. The service was extraordinary from the front door, to the server, and all the support staff. The highlight was the smoked prime rib which they make in their in-house smoker. The tenderloin was also delicious along with the accompaniments. Both the crabcakes and steamed pork buns were delicious, with a side of kimchi which was a bonus. Dessert was on point. We visited for Winter restaurant week. They have a great menu that includes appetizer choices of beef carpaccio and a crab-shrimp pOpper appetizer and salad. We both had the crab appetizer and it was delicious. My husband had the petite filet and I had the smoked prime rib and we also got the brussels as a side. The filet was well cooked and came with a small portion of mashed potatoes--it could have been seasoned more (even just a little salt). I enjoyed the Smokey flavor of the prime rib and loved the au jus. It did not come with any sides so we ordered the brussels and they were very tasty although I like them a bit crispier. The desserts were both amazing--bread pudding served with sauce and ice cream and key lime pie. We easily parked underground on a Saturday night. Nice ambiance.
