I made several calls to rat exterminator companies yesterday, after about a week of trying and failing to catch a rat ourselves. Louis, the owner of American Rat Control, was the fastest to respond and came out within a couple hours. He was thorough, courteous, and effective. By the time he left, we knew where the rat had gotten in, we had proper traps laid down inside, a plan to clean up sources of food we had thought were secure but were not, as well as a plan for outdoor control. The traps worked within hours, catching and killing the rat. A huge relief. Pricing was also very reasonable. I fully recommend this company. read more

They will price gauge you, their "monthly" service is at best every two months and it's impossible to get someone on the phone without calling multiple times. They are understaffed and use it as the excuse for everything that goes wrong, which ranges from inaccurate billing, missed appointments, no follow up and rude service. So I just want to preface this review with the fact that I do not usually share my disappointment with companies in an online forum, but I am doing this foremost to help people be more attentive to what good customer service is and when a company is dropping the ball. Unfortunately this one did. I hired Louis and his one guy I only knew of as Edgar. My mother had a huge rat infestation that horrified me, and I was, to say the least, shamed at how my mother was living. I called one other place than American Rat Control to assess the situation, but they said they would only try to stop rats, not do patching and wood work to proof the house, so when they charged me the $3200, I figured this was a lot more work and worth it. American Rat Control did come to the house, said they would "block and rat proof the house so as to have rats not get in" The first day after they finished, I noticed the rats were still coming from above the refrigerator form the roof. I said why was that not blocked? Louis proceeded to le tm know that that will cause more damage because they will chew through the opening anyway. I thought to myself that doesn't quite make sense since this is exactly how they are coming in to my mom's kitchen. And we are not talking a couple, we are talking families. They set up traps up in my mom's attic, but never told me how damaged the sir ducts were up there and how much the rats had chewed through. After about two months of the rats continuing to come into the house, Louis kept saying to me his worker said there are no holes fior them to come in. That was so not true, because as it turns out there were holes inside the house everywhere that had not been patched up. They never moved furniture or looked beyond the attic to really see that there was damage all throughout the house that the rats were able to keep coming in and out. As well, Louis kept saying that it was mom feedng the rats cat chow that was the problem. I said to him, my mom stopped feeding them for a couple of days, and the rats still came in and they started running into the kitchen frantically going through boxes of rice anything they could eat. So my mother decided to have them at least be fed in the corner, where they would then disappear back up into the attic up above the refrigerator and leave everything else alone, basically keep them contained. This went on for three months, and after I had hired someone to clean the kitchen, they were so freaked out by the rodent situation that still was evident, not been put at bay, that's when I called Louis again and got the receptionist who could see I was upset, put me on a brief hold and then said can she take a message., I then shortly got an automated response back that they were going to send the technician out, I didn't hear personally from the owner, until I sent him a letter explaining I had hired someone else to take control of this unending problem. At that point, the other contractor showed me all the holes inside the house, that still were not addressed and why the rats were never really prevented from coming in, they had access still, and I had even said this several times to American Rat Control, but to no avail I was always told there are no holes in that attic and these are just rats still trapped in the house only. Not True. So the upshot is that I asked for half my money back, which I will not be getting back, so now I am in a terrible predicament. If the job had been done correctly in the first place, I would never have hired someone else. With that in mind, I feel very lucky to have found this Louis. I work at property management company, this means we deal with a lot of vendors, Louis is definitely at the top of our list we have been working with him for 10 years now and will not replace him for no one. I have been dealing with rats on and off for years now, in a few of our out of town properties his prices was fair but the work he provided was beyond excellent. First, Peter gave me a very thorough bid. The job seemed pricey, Peter dropped the bid a little, and I decided to hire this company to make my house inaccessible to rodents. Then Jose did all the actual work, and couldn't have done a more competent job. He is very professional and incredibly helpful and easy to work with. So kudos to these two men, and to the company. I have a 5 year guarantee and hope I don't have to call them back, but if I do, I have full confidence any issues will be well handled. The worst! The guy came to give me an estimate on removing some rats from my basement. He played upon my anxiety of getting rid of them. I hadn't seen a rat, but there were droppings. He charged me $3200!!!! I felt so ripped off, but didn't feel like I could wait, and figured that was the going rate (my stupidity). After he had two guys come clean the basement (which took maybe an hour or two), he promised to come back and check the traps and set outdoor traps. He came back twice (no rats in trap) and I never saw him again. My husband called and he promised us three free months of service, but again, never saw him again. A total crook!! I made an emergency call to American Rat Control this morning to remove a rat from my tenant's outdoor home pre-school. Fortunately Louis, the American Rat Control company owner, called back quickly and happened to be in the area. I couldn't be more satisfied with my experience and the results working with ARC. Louis (the owner) and his team are exceptional. Incredibly responsive, very thorough, and overall very professional. Oh, and very reasonably priced. I had originally hired one of the bigger exterminator companies and they were horrible. They basically set two traps in the house and that was it. The rat took the bait the first night and got away. They didn't follow up and that was the end of it. Beyond frustrating. I know there's a comfort in hiring one of the larger companies, but bigger isn't often better. I was encouraged by the yelp reviews to give this place another shot but it looks like their issues have not been resolved. I hired these guys about a year ago for a mouse problem in my 1924 building. Initial scheduling was a little bit sketch but they came out and did an evaluation and I was confident that they were professional and wanting to help. I paid a decent amount of money for the work that included weekly follow ups for the next couple months. The tech was extremely friendly and hard working. I was a little upset that some of the work had an effect on the cosmetics of the exterior of the house and was done without consulting me - however, it was a minor annoyance. In general, I was very happy with the tech's work and he was extremely pleasant and helpful (which is why I'm giving them any stars at all.) In the following months, the only follow up I got was when I contacted them. (not part of the deal, I had thought) And they NEVER responded to email. I work a lot and did not expect my tenants to do the full time badgering apparently required to get them to come through on their contract. The tenants were good enough to replace their own traps, etc. The mouse problem decreased significantly but did not go away completely. As I appreciated the decrease, I kind of let go the fact that they had done almost no follow-up on my case. A year later, the mouse problem has returned. I suppose that time had mediated my feelings of frustration because I decided to give them another try. Also, I was hoping that maybe their knowledge of my property would be helpful. I spoke to a new sales person Diane and she assured me that scheduling and follow up would not be a problem. She also told me that I could email her any time and that she would respond. (not true, btw) I agreed to have an evaluation so that they could estimate the work needed. I'm currently working out of town and so am dealing with them by phone and through my tenants. After the appointment - my tenant was not impressed and I got a phone call asking when I wanted to schedule the work. I said "what work." She said "the work that the evaluator recommends." I said "I would like to know what the evaluator recommends before I agree to scheduling and paying for this work." She said "Okay, we will get you that information." That was over a week and a half ago and I haven't heard a peep. Of course I emailed them again and there was no reply. I really don't understand how businesses like this stay open. It's like they are asking me to dislike them. So, I'm going to take my chances with a new place. But let me tell you, I wish I'd had a five star experience. For our large home and lot in South Pasadena, we found American Rat from Culver City to be outstanding. The cost to close up the openings in our home was not the least expensive from the bids we received, but the quality was first rate. The tech was professional; we felt very comfortable with him in and around the house for a full day. We elected not to use the monthly service which was on the high end of cost, but the service still came with a 1 year warranty. The warranty increases to 3 years when the monthly service. 18 months passed and we heard a vermin in the attic. The re-trapping charge was reasonable and the required repair (caused by a construction contractor working on the AC supply lines) very reasonable. After meeting with 4 different pest control companies over the past 18 months, I highly recommend American Rat Control from Culver City. read more

Beware! Service and customer service sub-par. I've dealt with this company for approximately 2 years, in hindsight shame on me for it. I've called them at least 3-4 times throughout the 2years asking why they didn't show up, this is after 2-3 months minimum of no-show. The only indicator being my yard is a mess with mole or gopher pot holes and tracks. The customer service is terrible, don't ever call me back or return my calls. I have to usually call them 2-3 times to elicit a response. Then the promise of a next day service appointment with a no-show. No thanks! I would definitely recommend this company! My parents and my sister had worked with them and they were all very satisfied with the results and thats how we were referred to them. Louis is one of the most honest people I have worked with. We had rat issues and they had come and found holes in our roof and they had fixed it but we still had rat issues. Louis came himself and after inspecting our place he said that the employee who had originally done our work had not done the job properly and as a matter of fact he was no longer working for them because they had realized he was not good. After weeks I thought I was calling Ca Rat control ( city of LA) and I reached "American Rat Control" I spoke to Wendy and she was so patience listening to me for over 10 minutes. She suggested I have a home visit and its free, Eric arrived within 2 hours. I stayed in my car and waited, He was so though and he knew exactly what was happening and how the rats were getting. This company is less expensive but that is not a reason to hire them. The technician who they sent made several careless errors. Cut a hole in the ceiling in the wrong place. Did not cover the hole fully after he placed traps in the ceiling giving the rats space to dig through leaving a hole and plaster all over the floor. I had to use duct tape to make sure the rats could not get out. Also he forgot a rat trap with food in it in the room (window ledge hanging over the cat's tree). They are new to green pest control and not good at it. Finally resorted to an often prohibited method of sticky pads. Came home to find struggling in the pad. A horrible inhuman way to kill any creature. The tech who made the errors mad excuses but never apologized. I am a realtor and I would never recommend them. When I was faced with a rodent issue for the first time at one of the property's that I manage, I had to call a number of company's. I was becoming quite worried by the interaction I was having with numerous co.'s until I spoke to Ashely and Eric at ARC. Eric called me back, after hours, to make sure I was contacted asap, answered my questions, and came out right away. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and the price he quoted was reasonable (in comparison to another I had received). This issue was at a beautiful property built in the 1910's, in the Hollywood Hills and it is not possible to walk around in the attic crawl space due to the type of construction used at the time. Edgar came and handled the rat proofing of entire house carefully and did beautiful work. They returned to clear all traps, and the problem was handled! My mother was having an issue with rats in Los Angeles. She has a little crawl space underneath the house and they moved in without permission or knowledge for quite some time. She of course called me and said she just saw the biggest rat she had ever seen in her kitchen and was scared. I found American Rat Control online and scheduled an appointment. When they arrived they were very friendly after a brief search under the house, said that there was a whole camp of them, including baby rats. My Mom was even more scared after that but they tackled the infestation right there and she has not seen any others. This used to be such a good company. We recently moved from West Hollywood, where we used ARC several times, to the hills between Glendale and Montrose, where we noticed a rat problem a couple of months after moving in. The owner came out and described our problem and we negotiated a solution for rat-proofing, before the critters got inside our house. He said they'd be in touch to seal the place off and set bait stations. I waited, and waited, and waited... I called, and called, and called. We were told there had been a death in the family and of course we understood, but we were promised that someone would be coming out soon. By now five weeks had passed... and then, I heard scratching inside our house, in the walls. And my wife noticed something had been eating from our dog bowl. Clear signs of a rat. I called for the fifth time, begging them to send someone out. The nice clerk, Brionna, apologized and promised someone would come out on Friday or Saturday, and she would call me to let me know. They would come for no additional charge beyond the original $425 for rat-proofing. I waited some more. No call, no visit. And no answer Friday night and Saturday when I called. No one called on Monday either. Finally I called on Tuesday and asked for Brionna. "She's no longer working here," I was told. "Finally I lost it - what is wrong with you guys? This is the SIXTH time I called, and meantime, you've dragged your feet so long, we now have rats in the house!" Now came the response: "Hold, please." The receptionist (poor woman, having to deal with an angry client) calls the owner. After 10 minutes ("your call is important to us!") she comes back. The owner said "we can come out there tomorrow" - and charge me an extra $325 - for a problem they could have prevented if they had come four, three, two, even one week ago. No thanks. A while back we started hearing ratty-like sounds in the walls of our 1929, mostly original house. Based purely on a chance sighting of their truck I called American Rat Control, and Louis (I believe the owner??) came out and gave us a very fair estimate. Neither the highest or the lowest. I decided to try them out and a few days later Eric (one of the techs) came out and did a rodent proofing on the house. After about a month we were still catching rats in the traps (they sent someone out every week or so to check) and they never had any issues about honoring the contract and doing more work to solve the problem. Eric, especially, has been very helpful and seems to have taken it on as a personal mission. As I mentioned, this is an older house so I can see why it has been a task to seal it up. I called them up and they were able to get a same day inspection in, after hearing what Louis said about my property I told him I would need a day to talk it over and get funds to accommodate the work. Nothing but good things to say about this company....from the friendly and responsive office staff down to our inspector, Eric. Eric knew how to handle things with the situation and quickly resolved our small rat problem (had 3 rats). The rats were taken care of....so sad :( but they set the traps in a way that killed them as quickly as possible. The building was rat proofed in one day, so no other unfortunate rodents would get into the attic. I had direct access to Eric, my inspector, and he was as personable as one could be! These guys are great. We've used them for over a year for both rats and ants. We had them rat-proof the house and then did the yearly service for traps and bait (it comes with a guarantee so if we see them we just call and they come back to get rid of them). They completely got rid of the rats inside the house and we haven't had an more issues. We do the monthly and service now and anytime we have an issue they come out and spray.
