DO NOT STAY HERE! Their hot tub gave me Hot tub folliculitis, which first appears as an itchy, bumpy, red rash, then bumps that become tender then bumps that are filled with puss and they refused to give me a refund. In fact, the man denied that this is possible, and was extremely rude on the phone. On top of that, the breakfast was terrible, and the room STUNK really badly. I can't believe anyone is saying they have had a good experience here. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. It looks charming from the outside, but it is not worth getting a RASH over!! read more

Our room was filthy pet hair everywhere. We also had an issue with ants during our visit. Staff was not helpful when made them aware of issues. Walls are super thin and you can hear the people in the room next to you not to mention either squirrels or rats crawling on the roof at night. Extremely overpriced for what it was..... a rundown Victorian in serious need of repair. This place used to great place to stay but I can't recommend it anymore. I think the staff running it are just not putting in the time. Your better off at hotel and local restaurant. Don't even get me started on the food literally frozen items from Cisco that had been defrosted and refrozen several times. I was literally scared to go in the hot tub as it looked milky and filthy. I really hope I don't up with bed bugs. Tell the owner to make this place great again. read more

Eclectic inn in the heart of Georgetown CA. Perfect as a home-base for rafting and hiking excursions in the El Dorado area. In town, you can quickly walk to a Mexican restaurant, a couple bars, a grocery-type place and a breakfast place. The back deck is very relaxing, and the hot-tub looked nice. Some of the rooms are updated, and some still need work (understandable in an old place!). All of them are decked out in fun decor. Lots of interesting collections (clocks, paintings, etc). All the rooms are different, so be careful not to assume anything based on the pictures. I would ask ahead of time if you want a room that's been updated. If a television or a newer bed is important to you, ask for it beforehand. The breakfast was tasty. It was served at 8:30/9am. However, most days, this was too late in the morning for it to be useful to us as we had to leave by 7:30 or 8 am to get to the activities we planned (hiking, horseback riding, rafting). There is wifi, and it was strong enough to reach the 3rd floor- we even watched Netflix with it. It's "Aria", not the other one. Ask for the password at check-in- there's no info card in the room. They serve delicious wine and cheese in the afternoons and/or evenings. We had a nice time drinking wine on the back deck. However, this is another one where I'd ask ahead before making plans assuming it's at the same time every evening. Overall, we had a nice stay, and given the peculiarities, it seems like this is the kind of place that would get better with repeat stays. read more

I'm not much of a "bed and breakfaster"...am typically one who stays in hotels. This was only my 3rd ever visit to a B&B, so please keep that in mind when reading this review. My stay in early January was a nice "kicking back, get away from it all" sort of weekend. We weren't able to get cell service (Sprint and AT&T), but that's not necessarily a bad thing if you're wanting to be deliberately out of touch for a while. :) WIll and Maria, co-proprietors, were as friendly and welcoming as can be. They clearly take a lot of pride in their B&B and I was very impressed with their interest in making sure guests have a great stay. Maria recommended some great little shops in Placerville to go and check out, definitely glad we did. Tasty homemade breakfasts, too. Was fun eating a communal breakfast with other guests...again, a new experience for a seasoned hotel traveler. The rooms were relatively small, furnished with antiques. Stayed here last night with no advanced notice. I had a meeting in town and intended to drive home. This hotel is so amazing and Jason, the owner, is such a gracious host that I decided to get a room. I am so glad I did. Wine and cheese set out for us before the meeting. And this morning they served the most fantastic Apple crepes. Last night we got in from our meeting late and Jason came out and asked us if we needed anything. By the way, for those of you reading older reviews; Jason and his family just purchased this place less than 1 month ago, so you will get a much better customer service experience than what you are reading from the past owners. My mom found this place on Living Social deals and booked us a stay as an off-cycle anniversary gift. Having never been to a Bed & Breakfast before I was not quite sure what we were getting in to. As you may have guessed from the rating, we had an excellent time with Will and Maria. They are amazing hosts. It felt a bit awkward at first because my wife and I were the youngest people there for a while but a few other couples showed up. The room was immaculately clean (but certainly a little "quaint") and the house itself is just very cozy and very warm. The real story is what to do during the day. In the summer I'm sure people go to the American River for rafting trips and outdoor activities but it was too cold by the time we got there. It turns out the region is known also for it's wines (and, even better, beers) and it's apple orchards. We made a Saturday of travelling around the Sierra foothills wine and beer tasting and finally stopping for a slice of apple pie. Okay, we're not talking the most exciting weekend you've ever had and if your idea is to have a romantic getaway...well...let's just say the walls at the Inn are pretty thin...but it is otherwise incredibly romantic and comfortable. One final note, if you think your trip is going to include a nice romantic dinner at an expensive restaurant, it won't. if you stay in town. Virner (about 10 minutes up the road) is excellent food and romantic, just be sure to let Will or Maria book you a reservation because it does fill up fast. And don't be afraid of the locals, go into the bars. You'll have more fun than you think. read more

This place is a real gem! I came here by myself for a mini retreat. Upon arrival I was greeted by the owner, Jason, who was warm and welcoming. I stayed in room 7 which has a plush bed, a desk, dresser, armoire, and 2 chairs. The furniture and decor is well maintained and very clean. I couldn't help but notice how the glass lamps sparkled. This room does not connect to a bathroom, but there are 3 bathrooms on the floor to choose from, and it didn't bother me a bit to walk across the hall. I think Jason has done a fine job of creating an antique environment with just enough modern convenience to keep you comfortable. There was ample lighting in the room, a ceiling fan, and free Wi-Fi connection. The thoughtfulness put into every detail of this place is obvious. There was wine, cheese, and grapes in the parlor in the afternoon, and a full breakfast in the dining room in the morning... fruit salad with yogurt, ham, scratch made quiche and blueberry muffin, along with coffee, tea, and orange juice... A great start to my day. I hope to return soon. read more

I purchased a Living Social voucher. Unfortunately, I could not use it in time. When I called, I was gruffly informed that the Inn would not even honor the cash I had paid. We really liked this place. It's filled with charm and the owners were very sweet and accommodating. We arrived late and they left us some chilled wine in the parlor - a nice touch after the long drive. Each of the rooms are individually decorated and the beds are deluxe with featherbeds and down comforters. If you're looking for a shared bathroom room, I recommend #s 7 or 3. We had #4 and it was nice, but kind of dark and not as cute as the others IMHO. Breakfast was nice, with fresh scones and breads, fruit and an egg dish. They serve wine and hors d'oeuvres in the afternoons, but we were out and about so we missed that. All in all, a great place to relax in gold country. read more

The American River Inn was perfect for me. I looked a little further at one other place and then I thought I don't really need to compare and spend too much time looking. I booked the room after I read the description about it and looked at the pictures of it. I decided to give myself this place with some charm and character. I liked that I would get a breakfast and there was a picture of a plate of food on the internet which also looked good to me and I was drawn to the idea of staying. I booked it. I was not able to arrive in the mid afternoon because I had a long way to drive and I had fallen and injured myself right before leaving my house and driving too, bummer. Jason arranged everything for me. Jason called me on the phone which I really appreciated. I felt the personal touch of being well received. Other family members would be there and at breakfast I had a chance to meet them When I first arrived I walked into the sitting room for a quick glance. There was a big wood burning stove in the sitting room blasting and making the whole house warm. Just looking at that made me feel good. Jason came upstairs and checked on me to make sure I found everything and understood that the bathroom was my own private bath. I was upgraded to a bigger bed. The room was very clean and nice. There was a very clean and nice bathroom attached with the old fashioned water closet and a claw foot tub and pedestal sink. I was surprised to see robes in the room. The robes made me feel instantly nice because they are soft and cozy. I used one and it was a first class robe. The day I got there it was storming heavily. I listened to the storm when I crawled into bed and was instantly lulled to sleep. The sheets were fresh and the bedding was done very nicely. When I got up in the morning and dressed and went downstairs for breakfast, and you an tell breakfast is starting because the aromas rise a little to the room. They serve breakfast at a specific time. Tea, hot chocolate and coffee are available and you can serve yourself when you arrive downstairs. There is a long galley kitchen where they are working to prepare to prepare the food. Breakfast was satisfying to me.They are very friendly and care for their guests. The building was only two blocks from the event I was attending on the same street. It was convenient to everything in the town. There was parking. The rooms were really Victorian down to the doorknobs and locks on the room doors. I look forward to visiting in the spring and or summer again. read more

What a fantastic experience. My wife and I reserved a room on a Friday night with plans to go rafting on the American River the following day. We were checked in swiftly, and shown to our room. It was nicely made up but there was one problem: a small dog in the room next to ours was just a yappin' away. The housekeeper tried to get ahold of the owners via mobile phone. With no luck, she set out down the road to track them down in town. In the meantime, the clerk immediately upgraded us to the honeymoon suites for our trouble. They were really on top it things. To tell you the truth, I didn't mind the dog all that much. There was wine and appetizers in the evening when we arrived and a wonderful breakfast of fruit-filled crepes, yogurt, sausage, coffee, and juice. Wonderful. The grounds provide a very nice ambiance for reading with benches, hammocks and a large patio. There's also a hot tub (we didn't partake), a wrap around porch, and a gift shop. This is a very old historical bed and breakfast. I read some of these negative reviews and found them to be a little silly. You are paying to relive the past, you are in a large Inn at the end of the historical main street of Georgetown. The claw foot tubs and chain pull toilets are indicative of that time period. If you are expecting a modern hotel or B&B - This isn't it. My wife and I enjoyed sitting on the balcony and watching the world go by while having a cocktail. The room was clean. We were told it was haunted by the ghost of Oscar and his girlfriend however the only haunting we experienced were some of the artwork reminded me of the movie 1408 The nightlife is walking distance. Stumpy meadows lake isn't far, the rubicon, uncle toms cabin, Fantastic mountain biking, motorcycle riding both on and off road, and horse riding around this area. I needed a room at the last minute and was pleased to reserve the last one in the Inn a couple of nights with only a couple of days' notice. I arrived just as Happy Hour began, and had a really nice conversation with another guest. My room was small and very full with the bed, a small table, a chair and an armoire... and a little step stool that's absolutely needed to get in and out of bed! Since I was alone, no one needed to access the far side of the bed, so it wasn't a big issue, but if there had been another person, it would have been pretty tight. There are some minor blips--my ceiling fan only had off and high speed and the water in the sink in the shared bath liked to drip. But this is a clean and charming B&B and the entire staff is friendly. Laura and Jeannette were great hosts--very welcoming and very willing and able to accommodate food sensitivities at breakfast. read more

So my fiancé and I were last minute booking a room, and this establishment came up on the radar. We called at 11 am and spoke to Laura, who was very accommodating and set us up with a room that was ready at just about any time we needed, and it was super-easy! We got to the establishment and Laura met us and showed us to our room, made dinner recommendations, and told us about history of the house. As seen in another photo it is recognized by an E. Clampus Vitus plaque, and if you know the Clampers, it means it has some very SIGNIFCANT history behind it! Everything was perfect regarding the room, and if you want to watch TV, ask for it, because we didn't and the room didn't have on, but many others did, at no extra expense. Breakfast was great, and I'm glad it didn't start until 8:30 am, as I needed to decompress a bit! We went for a few hot-tubs and it was so easy... The Host and Hostess, along with Laura, were so very friendly and accommodating, that I could recommend it to any of our friends without reservation. Town was just down the street, so we got out to eat and explore more than once! The house, the rooms, and the decor are all authentic and I often wondered if the wooden floors that were refinished so well up to the use of brass patches screwed into the defects made me think they were from bullet holes in a time long-gone, or just a knot that fell out of the wood and needed patching. As said before, it's a short walk to food, bars, museums, art galleries, jeep outing businesses, or church. Leave all your cares behind, unless you need to follow up on a business dealing or the such, in which the fast WIFI and great cell reception filled in for a few times. Soak in the slowness of the living and enjoy your gold-panning, hiking, river-rafting, antique shopping, jeeping, or just throwing horseshoes at the park across the street! read more

Gem of a bed and breakfast inn. Very spacious with about 15 rooms enough for a family reunion. Delicious full breakfast with scrabble eggs, sausages, peaches with yogurt, pancakes with cinnamon apples. Jason, the owner, is the perfect host. All the rooms are beautifully decorated. The gardens and porch area shady and quiet. A lovely retreat. Georgetown itself is a quaint town to visit. Very friendly people. Will come again! read more

We had a fantastic stay here last weekend. The proprietors - Will and Maria were wonderful, as was their staff. This place is spotless - not a lick of dust or a stray cobweb anywhere - inside or out. We were baffled. Usually, places with this much antique flair (clutter) are great big dust balls. The room was sweet and nicely appointed - lots of windows and our own en suite bath, with easy access to the upstairs wrap around porch. The bed is my only complaint - my boyfriend said it was "like sleeping in a cereal bowl" and I can't argue. It hurt my back so much that it woke me up throughout the night as I rolled over. However, the other guests raved about how comfy their beds were, so perhaps the mattress needs flipping (in room #1, if you're reading this Will). The wine and hors d'ouevres "hour" is no chintzy affair - Maria puts out quite a spread, and the wine just keeps flowing. We had a lovely time sitting out on the porch talking to the other guests and enjoying the wine and snacks, for well over an hour! I cannot recommend this spot enough - it may not be often that you decide to head to Georgetown, CA ("way beyond Cool" - you might have to look at a map to get that little joke that they plaster onto their bumper stickers), but as a nice little get away from the bay area, it was perfect. read more

So few businesses now-a-days seem to understand the value of repeat business and maintaining a stellar reputation by finding ways to delight the customer. We bought a living social voucher for this inn and were planning on making a trip sometime in December. But unfortunately, I was feeling under the weather on the day we were supposed to go to the inn and my husband called them and asked if we could postpone the reservation for some other time. The lady on the other end said that this was perfectly ok and was nice about it. Today, I called the inn to make a reservation. The man on the other end yelled at me for cancelling the last time and grudgingly gave me available dates for room #5 that I was interested in. When I asked if room #2 was available for a certain date, he said "don't push it" and was absolutely rude. I told him that we did not mean to inconvenience him, which is why we asked the lady if it's possible to postpone - if it wasn't, we would have gone there anyway. The man wanted proof if I was actually sick the last time! He asked me if I had seen a doctor and how I could make a reservation when I was sick (as if I can predict when I will fall sick). He also tried to give me just one night stay at the inn with the voucher instead of two that I was supposed to get!! Anyway, stay away from this place. If the owner can be so rude and mean on the phone, imaging how awful he will be when you're actually staying at the inn and what kind of customer service you can expect. I am glad living social refunded me my money because I wouldn't have gone anyway. read more

My daughter was getting married on memorial day this year 2016 so we wanted to stay somewhere nearby she got married at uncle Tom's cabin near Georgetown ca, so we googled some local places to try to find a place to stay . The American River inn came up and I decided to call and book a room, in the room would be me my boyfriend my grandson and granddaughter as I was taking care of them after the wedding. The only room they had that was big enough was ...what they called a sweet ... Sweet it was not! This was an old broken down victorian style home converted into a hotel . It was 200.00 dollars a night , the food was frozen and just not good. it was hot and very uncomfortable the bed was completely broken down, The shower was an old clawfoot tub which would've been nice if it were just a tub, also it was very loud from the traffic going up and down the street I do believe the jeeps from the Rubicon going up and down. So that really is the end of what I have to say. my mother and my sister and my daughter and granddaughter also rented a room which they say was not great either! O yea it is dog friendly so if one of ur grandkids have allergies they don't say there's pet dander everywhere!!!! BAD... read more

I was so happy that we stumbled upon this amazing Bed and Breakfast Jason the owner was more then thrilled to tell us the History of the place and answer all our questions. We really enjoyed his knowledge and stories. Around 5:30 we were treated with wine, cheese, crackers and grapes. So yummy and unexpected. We stayed in one of the suites, room 5 and it was spectacular. No detail was left out.I especially enjoyed the pink fluffy robe, so comfy. The decor throughout the entire house gave you the feeling you were back in the 18 hundreds. It was really fun taking my time and enjoying all the fun, charming spot on decor. In the morning, we were treated to a lovely breakfast of french toast with warm maple syrup, scrambled eggs, sausage and fresh fruit and yogurt. The fresh squeezed OJ was yummy and the coffee hot. Where do I start. If Yelp would let me give this place zero stars I would, but one star will have to do. I'm guessing the only reason this place has a four star rating is because the reviews are all pretty old, and those guests encountered no problems, or caused the owners to do nothing but give them a room and that's it. So why am I giving them one star? Simply put, the absolute worst customer service I've ever encountered anywhere. The owner Will seems friendly when it the situation has to do with him collecting your money, but if you have a complaint, or a problem that needs to be resolved he is a rude, abrasive, and completely out of line. He has no concept of customer service, or manners. Let me explain further. Months ago my wife and I reserved all of the rooms in the hotel for our wedding. At that time we had talked to the woman that ran the front desk. She said we would have to put down a 300 dollar refundable deposit, which we were ok with. She also said if we cancel the remainder of the rooms that weren't booked by our guests 30 days out, then our 300 dollars would be returned. So 60 days out we canceled the reservations on 9 rooms that hadn't been booked, and waited for our deposit to be returned. Well that never happened. So after numerous calls trying to get a hold of the owner Will we gave up until after the wedding. Two days after the wedding we got a call from Will. When my wife spoke to Will he was immediately hostile and spoke to her in a very rude, abrasive tone. A tone that would make any husband very angry. Will had the nerve to call my wife a few names that no business owner should call a paying customer. Will refused to return our money, stating that we agreed to a non-refundable deposit. Which we never agreed to. So the next week we were in town and decided to talk face to face. When we arrived we waited about 20 minutes to talk to Will, and when we finally sat down it was the same story. He was completely rude, and wouldn't even let me finish a sentence without interrupting with his argumentative statements. Will had a copy of the "wedding package" paperwork with him, which stated the deposit was non-refundable. Which if we had received that paperwork in the fist place, we would have never been sitting there trying to get out money back. But since we never got that paperwork, or agreed to a non-refundable deposit, we believe its only fair that we got our deposit back. On a side note, we had also booked all the rooms in another hotel, and two vacation homes, all with refundable deposits. Will agreed that his employee had made a mistake by not giving us this wedding package paperwork, but refused to make things right. The whole time we attempted to talk to Will about this issue he was argumentative, rude, and completely lacked the manners you'd expect from a civilized business owner. His view is the customer isn't right only he is. It should also be mentioned out of the 9 rooms we canceled 6 were booked by other couples, he also booked rooms that we still had reserved for our group to others not in our group. He was also very rude and unaccommodating to one couple in our group that asked to cancel their second nights reservation because my friends wife is 6 months pregnant and the rooms were stifling hot causing her to feel sick. Will would not give them their money back, and ever refused to give them a receipt. About a week later he finally refunded them their money, after some negotiation. Other local business owners that I know up there in Georgetown said my feelings about Will were spot on, and that is his reputation in town. If I had to recommend a solution for Will, it would be to retire, and go someplace where you don't have to talk to people and have basic manners. I would never recommend to anyone to stay at the American River Inn, save a little money and stay at the Rock Creek Inn, and enjoy their nice, cool, comfortable rooms. Lastly, a little bit about the hotel itself. It is a bed and breakfast style establishment. Meaning not every room has a bathroom. It has a old swap cooler that just doesn't do the job adequately during the summer. The rooms are nice, very outdated, but that is the design of that building. It would be a great place to stay if it had a little renovation, starting with the owner. read more

This is a very good place to stay when you are by the american river. Very old, charming, you feel like you are experiencing a piece of history. Much of the decor is original or at least was made in america, not some cheap chinese imports. We used the hot tub in the lovely garden in the back, and the owner brought us cheese, crackers and lemonade that we could eat off a tray while we were in the jacuzzi. I don't know of any other place that would do this for you. The beds were very high off the floor and very comfortable, we fell right to sleep. The only thing is there is no TV, but they have a radio in the room where you can listen to old abbott and costello tapes and other old comedians. The breakfast was fantastic. No matter what time you show up, they will serve you. If you put in a special order, they will make it. They gave us fresh apple pancakes, with apples they picked themselves. also a fruit dish salad with yogurt and whipped cream. We asked for hot cocoa and they brought it out, no problem. The service was very warm and friendly, and the lobby with all its stuffed animals and decorations was inviting and charming. also, lovely gift shop personally organized by the wife, Marie. We stayed here in May 2011. We wanted to get out of town for the weekend for a little R&R and this seemed like a nice quiet place. The inn is an old historical building but very well preserved. The rooms are small but nicely decorated with antique furniture. The inn is old so there is some squeaking as you walk around upstairs but nothing obnoxious. In the evening they had wine and light appetizers which were delicious. They were very generous with the food and wine and there was plenty for everyone. There is a wrap around porch that was nice to sit on while enjoying my nibbles and wine. At night we enjoyed the spa that they have in the very back of the yard. There is not much to see in the town itself. The economy appears to have hit this little town hard and a lot of businesses near the inn are closed. We walked around a bit and ate at a family owned Mexican restaurant which was pretty good. Other people staying in the inn were going rafting but we opted to hit up a few wineries and walked around Placerville. Overall we enjoyed our stay, the inn is clean and the host was very nice. The reason I only rated it 3 stars is because there is no secure parking so you have to park your car on the along the street. Unfortunately the morning we left we discovered someone had vandalized my car causing about $2800.00 in damage to it. I realize you take a risk anywhere you park but this was an intentional act done by someone for no reason other than they felt like it. Unfortunately our little R&R weekend turned into a week without a car and a bill to go with it. I liked the inn a lot but I won't return again because of the parking/security issue. read more

We recently stayed at the Inn for a friend's birthday weekend. What a pleasant surprise! Who knew how much history this little, quaint town held. The bed and breakfast was so unbelievably cozy. Our room had a wood-burning fireplace and private bathroom. The aroma of breakfast pancakes, cinnamon apples, fruits with yogurt and sausage made a great way to wake up in pajamas and mosey on downstairs. Jason, the owner decorated the whole home with tidbits of history all throughout. And we got lucky as all of the guests went to the main street to watch the tree lighting and Christmas parade. It was like living in a Hallmark movie. We will definitely be back! read more

Randy and I were lucky to have found this place through Living Social. We liked our cozy room,comfy bed, nice breakfast, wine and appetizers. Will and Maria are friendly hosts. This is a great place to stay if you like wine tasting like us. We had fun with the stuffed animals in the hall. I enjoyed the hot tub after everyone was sleeping. The American River Inn is a delightful little gem in the gold country. We had the sheer pleasure of staying at the Inn this last weekend for an overnight. We had a beautiful quiet room with its own bathroom on the third floor. The decor is antique English Victorian style, very beautiful. All the rooms, that were not yet occupied, we could view and each were so unique. The bed was very lofty and comfortable. I love historical buildings and this one was just perfectly lovely. The innkeeper Jason and staff were very hospitable and kind, wanting to make sure we were accommodated however they could. They serve a beautiful breakfast with your overnight stay, which looked lovely and delicious. The whole atmosphere is homey and very welcoming. I cannot wait to come back and stay again! My gf and I spent a weekend there. There's nothing like the atmosphere of a small town. Each bedroom is decorated differently and all the American Revolution memorabilia was sort of cool. One of my favorite moments was having drinks at the saloon where they serve mixed drinks in jars. We didn't know what to expect, but we kept an open mind and had a great time! read more

It is our life experience in staying in this elegantly decorated country hotel. All thw furnishings brought us back in time. Remind me of our grandpa time, and throught as we were in an museum. Price is great and people are friendly. We visited the town, ate there wherever we felt liked. We also visited the fire house and the Odd fellows hall. We had a great memory there. read more

Came here for a two day get away with my daughter. She needed a quiet place to be away from the dorm life of college, sleep and study. At arrival we were created with a glass of wine and cheese. We were given the local spots for dinner and shown our lovely room. Lots of history here. Learned all about the logging industry, gold mining and this adorable town. Everyone super friendly. We spent time hiking I between her studies. Had lunch at a fantastic pizza place with gluten free pizza. Perfect get away spot. Thanks Georgetown for showing us a nice time. read more
