This was my wife and my first time experiencing a Bed and Breakfast in the states and we were impressed. From the second we walked up from the private parking lot to the Victorian Mansion we were warmly greeted by owner and operator Alfred.  We both felt welcomed and overwhelmed with the beauty of this home. Alfred made us feel like a family member and gave us a tour of his beautiful home and it's history. Power's Mansion is adorned with so many antique pieces and trinkets that you might initially mistake it for a museum. Each of the rooms have a theme; we had the lighthouse room which was fully decorated in the lighthouse theme. The breakfast was hearty for travelers with tons of carbs, and I loved their quiche. Alfred sets a beautiful atmosphere with music and lighting. We were treated to outstanding hospitality! Alfred went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and memorable. His stellar recommendations to visit the iconic parks and sights in and around Auburn were greatly appreciated. I particularly liked this place due to the ambience there. The house is old, large and sits on a hill top. It's like going back in time. It's a Victorian Mansion owned, managed, and (He's also the cook!) by Alfred Lee a very friendly and in the other reviews he is termed a "Treasure". I agree with that assessment. Ask him how the Mansion got to be on top of the hill, it's a good story. My grandmother owned the Mchenry Mansion in Modesto back in the fifties and I was taken back in time to memories of that period of my life. Places like this are so rare these days, so Take advantage of an opportunity to try something different. I really loved this place! The atmosphere is fun, we sat by the fire it was romantic and wonderful mini get away. The only thing that was a little tough for me is I have back problems due to an accident and the bed was not super comfortable for me but my boyfriend thought it was comfortable so if you don't have back problems you will probably be just fine. That is the only reason I gave it four stars instead of five. The overall experience was great though! The owner Alfred is very kind and he made the most wonderful breakfast in the morning and came out to speak to us and I was fascinated to hear the history of this place. I would definitely recommend this for a romantic get away for couples. read more

We spent two nights there - I'm not sure why. We ended up taking the Honeymoon Suite. First, the owner's wife/co owner has no customer service skills. She is better suited working in a prison. We finally got into our room after spending 5-10 minutes working the key lock until it finally opened. Our room was very average for B&B except for the following - It need a very good vacuuming, wall cleaning and removable of an old fuzzy donut that someone left in the unplugged refrigerator a couple of weeks prior to our arrival. I'm not a big B&B fan, but this place is dirty. read more

The grounds and mansion itself are beautiful. Inside, you will find quaintly decorated rooms that are great to look at. As others have mentioned, the astroturf is a little strange but it does look nice because it's always green. The grounds were fairly clean and maintained. When I made my reservations, I was told that the innkeeper of the day would call me on the day of check-in to find out what time I would be arriving so that someone could be at the front desk. The restaurant across the way is owned by the same people and staff move back and forth between these places. I never received that phone call but thankfully the check-in process was fairly quick because the front desk gal just happened to have been walking over from the restaurant as we pulled up. She was very pleasant and got our room key quickly. The day we arrived was the first 85* day of the season and as soon as we opened the door to the room we were hit in the face with a blast of heat. Not exactly the kind of warm welcome to the honeymoon suite we were hoping for. The gal who walked us into the room walked over and turned on the A/C on high for us and proceeded to show us the other amenities. A TV straight from the 1980s in the corner with no kind of channel guide. A fireplace and a nice sized bathroom with a bidet and a heart-shaped jacuzzi tub (the only reason we upgraded to the honeymoon suite). Oh, and she was sure to mention that she had graciously came up to the room earlier and supplied our fireplace with a firelog in case we wanted to roast even further near the fire. I would have instead appreciated her coming up to the room earlier and turning on the A/C for us but oh well. So, while waiting for the room to cool down, we enjoyed a nice cold bath and had the windows open as it was cooler outside than in the room. No screens on the windows and no handle either to allow you to re-close the window... Really, a $0.50 trip to Home Depot could get you a handle on the window... Annoyed, we decided to go out to dinner as the room was still 83* an hour later. We stopped at the front desk on our way out to mention that the A/C didn't seem to be working and we were told that "it's a big space with that large room and the bathroom. It may just take a little while." An hour and a half later when we got back to the room, we were quite annoyed that it was still 82* in the room. The A/C was obviously just blowing in outside air. Someone had come in and placed a couple of floor standing fans in different places of the room so at least they were aware of the problem. About 5 minutes after we returned, a nice young gentleman showed up and said he was working on the problem with the A/C. He mentioned "We have this problem every spring where the A/C unit needs to be adjusted"... really? Maybe you could have adjusted it the day before your guests were supposed to arrive when you saw the weather report? Regardless, whatever he did still didn't fix the problem completely as the room really only cooled down as the evening went on and the outside air began to cool. So, bedtime rolls around and we notice that the bed's mattress was HARD. Out of curiosity over the mattresses' age, I looked for the tag on it. Didn't see a date but got a kick out of the tagline on it that said "Are you tired of not getting a good night's sleep due to a too-soft mattress?" No. Never. It was one of the worst night's sleep I've had in quite a while. I know some people prefer a hard mattress but I would guess that a majority prefer softer so just be warned that if you prefer soft mattresses, you may want to bring your own bed to the honeymoon suite at the Power's Mansion Inn. Another thing to mention is that the honeymoon suite is located in an upper loft type area of the Inn. There are two rooms up there. One is the honeymoon suite and another smaller room off to the side. The bed in the honeymoon suite is right on the separating wall between these two rooms. I would imagine that could be quite weird being the honeymooning couple if there was someone staying in the adjoining room... Your stay at the Inn apparently comes with a free breakfast at the restaurant but that is only if you hang around until 9am. We woke up at 6:30 with sore backs and had no desire to stick around so we went and found a great breakfast place in town. What else? Oh, yes, there was free WiFi but the signal was practically non-existent up in the honeymoon suite, even on their range extension network. I was hoping to be able to rate my experience here higher but unfortunately, it was not even a 2-star experience for me. Sorry, Power's Mansion Inn... read more

My husband and I recently were guest at wedding at the Power Inn Mansion. Driving up the venue the day of the wedding we almost missed the entrance. Right when you make a slight right, bamm it is right on the right hand side. Once we were out of our car we started to walk up the gates (about 10 steps from the parking lot) there was the ceremony location right scammed THERE! At first I was thinking that the guests were mingling until we were taken to another location, but no that was it! Funky.. There are two ceremony location one is the Victorian Gazebo and the other is by the waterfall, both are right acrossed from one another and both don't look anything like the photos online. The couple had their ceremony under the gazebo and when one of the bridesmaid was walking up to gazebo her heel got stuck between the bricks and she twisted her ankle. There was no mortar used between the bricks... unsafe.. One thing I must say that was great, is there is no real grass used; it is all artificial and there was no damaged done to my high heel digging into dirt. We were moved from the ceremony through the parking lot down the steep hill to the reception. Yes, we walked through the parking lot and down the street. Try walking in 3'inch + high heels down a steep hill..There were several women bitching about the walk down the hill! Walking into the reception hall we went in and headed to the left and to the right was a pub open to the public! The "Ballroom" the photographer whom photographed the Power Inn did a fabulous job... The ballroom was outdated and needed updating. There were no toilet seat covers in two of the three restrooms stalls. The one stall that did have them, I used the last one. There was a water leak in the middle of the floor of the restroom right dead center of the sinks. Hopefully the bride had another restroom that was accessible to her. Hours later the seat covers were restocked! Woohoo! As I was exiting the restroom stall a young male staff was entering to clean up the water spillage. Didn't even bother to announce his presence as he came into the restroom. As he wad mopping up the floor a women washing had mentioned to they guy that how she had his boss reprimanding him in front of guest. Exiting the reception after sore and tired dancing feet having to hike up the non-light steep hill in pitch black was far than pleasurable. The parking lot didn't have a over head lighting or street lamps so having to located and pull out ones car can be challenging. The food was pretty good and the staff (minus the owner) were very pleasant and helpful.. If planning your wedding you might want to look around on other locations... read more

This should be no stars! I understand old, I don't understand filth. We requested the Gold room. The mattress was very old with stains all over it. There were hairs in the sheets, the carpet was filthy and the bed frame was broken. Sheers on the windows that looked out over a patio. We could see the people outside so they could see us inside. We couldn't allow ourselves to stay even though we had paid for the room with group on. We walked out and gave the gentleman at the front desk our keys. We have stayed at many B&B and understand that sometimes it may feel like sleeping at grandma's, but my grandma had a clean house! It is a shame, because in the hands of the right innkeepers, it could be an incredible B&B. The place needs to be thoroughly cleaned, re-carpeted, new beds and linens just to start. The cheesiness of the rest can be overlooked if all of the above is in place. I really wanted to like it mostly because I had bought a group on for a dear friend as a thank you for a huge help she was to our family when our son had surgery. Let's say she was very diplomatic about their stay prior to us going. I will be getting her another gift as I am embarrassed that this was my gift to her! read more

If there was a way to leave no stars or minus stars, that would be more appropriate for this place. A friend and I arrived yesterday after driving 8 hours to get here. We arrived a little after 5, and no one was at the reception area. Two resident ladies helped us out by calling the very pregnant new receptionist, who happened to also be working at the Power Club, owned by the same man who owns the Inn. She soon arrived and led us through the kitchen and upstairs to our room (number 5 - the Irish Immigrant room). I was appalled when she opened the door, and I tried to disguise my horror. It is a jam-packed room with no chair, the armoire (with no hangers and only a few hooks) that cannot be easily accessed because the old TV and stand are just inches away. The leaning sink is right inside the door, which someone had tried to pry into at some point. One has to climb three steps to use the non-private, leaking toilet, and another five steps to access the ancient claw-foot "spa" tub, surrounded only by a filthy shower curtain (see pictures). Again, no privacy whatsoever, as you can look over the room during your unsafe shower. There are two smoke alarms in the room - one on the wall without a battery, and one on the ceiling that does not work. The two fire extinguishers I saw were checked last March 2015. Since this is a 140 year old wooden building, with no posted evacuation signs anywhere, I do not feel safe at all. I checked the filter on the small window air conditioner and it was filthy. It was also extremely dirty and dusty under the plastic side table by the bed. I am afraid to pick up the mattress, but you can almost read a newspaper through the thin sheets. The wallpaper is peeling away, and various cheap, ugly round wall plates cover various problems on the brick projection (chimney?). The room lighting is terrible. There are two long, narrow windows in the room, with shades covering them that cannot easily or completely be raised. Bizarre pictures are scattered about the room, further adding to the clutter and lack of aesthetics. Stairs to reach the room are very narrow, steep and covered with dirty carpet. As for the parlor downstairs, the area is very cluttered with too much antique furniture. It is dark and dreary, and the only thing missing is the dead body. The breakfast room is off the parlor and reception desk, cluttered much the same way. Breakfast was okay, served only at 9:00 AM, but the bacon and sausage were quite greasy. Uneven surfaces abound in the B&B - be careful where you walk. This place is not handicap accessible, so don't even think about it. It is clear that this B&B/Inn has been ruefully neglected for years. You need to invest money to get money. As the owner obviously does not address the many poor reviews, I hope my review will dissuade any other victim from staying here. We have another 5 more nights to suffer, as no money will be returned for checking out early. Plus we are here at a time (because of the Tevis Cup Endurance event, for which we are volunteering) when there are no vacancies in the immediate area. It is a shame this once-beautiful and historic place is rotting away with neglect. Either it needs to be closed down (by the health or fire department) or someone with considerable wealth take it over and turn it around. Please contact me personally and I can fill you in on more. Absolutely amazing experience when we stayed at the Power's mansion inn. Alfred -the owner was such a pleasure to meet and talk to. I was interested in scheduling a tour for their Wedding Venue. I have emailed twice, called four times, left two voicemails, and texted twice in the last 7 Business days. We are trying to look at Wedding venues and all the other businesses have been very engaging and responsive within the same day . I finally got ahold of a contact and was told he was too busy to talk to me at the time and to text instead. I have yet to receive a response to any of my requests. I would assume that most established businesses that have some sort of decent customer service would at least respond via email, text, phone call in 24-48 hours. I will definitely not be recommending to anyone to call this business in the future for any sort of event. read more

My husband and I just got married here and it rocked. Planning the event was made simple by the hard work and organization of Alfred (wedding and reception MC) and his crew. Alfred is very professional and easy to trust with all the details of wedding planning and all the potential stress that that may coincide for many brides to be. Honestly, i feel like getting planning and getting married was a breeze, no stress at all and I believe I have Alfred to thank for that. Thank you! The great thing about this wedding and reception cite is that everything is done in house, all the vendors are connected to the mansion and collaborate with Alfred. So my husband and I did not have to search for individual vendors for photography, flowers, cake, table and chair rental, DJ etc. Seriously, if you are a bride to be and do not have the freakish desire to endure the stress of planning and orchestrating one of the largest events of your life, then come here and let Alfred take that burden off of your shoulders. Believe me, I was blissfully, carefree able to enjoy our wedding when that day finally came. The Victorian era accommodations were perfect, so much fun for all our guests. After the reception ended we were able to mingle and socialize inside the mansion as late as we so desired. And the next day, breakfast that Alfred provided was superb. How much? Totally affordable. Alfred has many price packages that will fit your budget. I never thought as a poor graduate student I would be able to afford the wedding of my dreams, but I was wrong. The building is charming but the place is run down and dirty. Breakfast is in another building and nothing special, scrambled eggs and bacon. Half and half for coffee curdled. Alfred, while very nice, talked too much. Even tho we had a bad experience the first time we decided to give them a second try a couple years later, as they are the only place we found within walking distance of old town Auburn. We live over the mountain in Nevada. Two days before our visit a massive snow storm was about to hit. Knowing this was late notice we called Alfred to cancel our one night stay and booked a two night stay later in the year. Alfred agreed but never returned our money. The Power's Mansion is located in a beautiful area for enjoying a nice walk, great restaurants and night life. The room was okay, a bit awkward as the toilet has a curtain for privacy that when closed your legs poke out. We would have preferred to have had a big dining table for breakfast so we could meet the other guests instead of individual tables. My best friend just got married here. This was my first time ever at the Inn. During the wedding rehearsal, Alfred was very accommodating he let us know that we can go through the rehearsal as many times as the bride saw fit. It was tough walking up the brick path to the gazebo in heels, but we all did fine walking up and down it. The day of the wedding we arrived bright and early. Another bridesmaid and I wandered the grounds, went into the main reception area. The staff was really nice. Right before the wedding was to start, Alfred came up to our room and asked us if we needed anything, since we were still waiting on a few important guests. He got us what the bride asked for and was extremely pleasant about it. The food at the reception was good and Alfred DJ'd, he kept people on the dance floor. I stayed overnight here for a mini weekend vacation. I reserved Kristynn's room. It was clean, and comfortable. I loved that my bathroom has an old school toilet with the overhead tank, and also a claw bathtub. The breakfast was served in The Power Club. It was delicious, and plentiful! The french toasts were made of cinnamon roll, oh my goodness, heaven :) The potatoes were very well seasoned, and the omelette was also good. The owner, Alfred, was very friendly and pleasant to talk to. The front desk staff was nice. I was told over the phone that I couldn't check in until 4pm because there was going to be a wedding that day. I arrived early at 2:30pm and since the wedding party was not there yet, she allowed me to check-in early which was so great. It would have been a total hassle if I had to wait couple more hours. This review is about a month overdue. This place was the most PERFECT getaway for my significant other and I! It was our anniversary vacation and we needed a place you stay last minute. Powers Mansion was available and we did not expect the beauty and customer service we would receive. You arrive to find a grassy area with gazebos and flowers. The mansion does look slightly worn down, but in a more romantic, Victorian way than an unkempt manner. That's only because of the decades of wear it's received. Regardless of wear, sanitation is still present. We arrived late at night and were greeted by Greta, the housekeeper. Immediately, she welcomed us with open arms and asked how our drive here was. Although it was very late, she still gave us a brief tour of the place and informed us of when breakfast would be served. Our entire stay felt like home away from home. Fresh towels and a bed every morning and a hearty, delicious homemade breakfast. Greta is so caring, too. She even joined us for breakfast and a snack one day! When you come here, Greta makes you feel at home. In no way do you ever feel like just a guest, counting the days until you go. Our stay would not be as amazing and personal as it was without Greta. We would have been better off at Motel 6. It was very loud at night due to some concert nearby that kept going past midnight, plus train noise, cold and drafty due to the skylight coupled with a thin old blanket, and the stairs outside proved to be a slipping hazard - major safety issue. My husband slipped and fell down the stairs, while wearing high traction trail shoes, which were slippery with morning dew. The inn was much shabbier than it was chic, smelled musty, and was overall a disappointing experience. read more

Went to a bridal shower here. The party was amazing it self but they don't have any air conditioning on the lower level. They had 2 small portable ac units that didn't get turned on until party guests discovered them. It's in the mid 90s today and was not any Warmer outside then it was inside. The man who was working should have thought and turned those air conditioning units on first thing this morning. For the price they paid to have an event here the least they could do is turn the air on and clean the bathroom. read more

I enjoy going to bed and breakfasts and as a fan of Victorian homes, my now fiancé thought this would be an ideal place to stay at, for my birthday weekend. He was right! Check in was a breeze, Britney was the sweetest person and was patient with all of our requests and questions. Our room was the Spring room, it was next to the kitchen and was decorated in mostly blue wallpaper. It was a nice sized room with the basic amenities. The only thing that was a hassle was the shower head, once turned on, it had a mind of its own, lol. So, let's just say, it was like a slip and slide in the restroom. Breakfast was amazing, tons of carbs, the French toast is fantastic, and I loved their quiche! I know I left with at least 5 extra pounds in my tummy. Dinner was great as well, it was buffet style. Overall, our stay was nice and memorable. Sadly, we never had a chance to try the beers on tap, but I'm sure we'll be back! We booked "the Anniversary Suite", not good. Sheets are so thin you can see through them, marks and spots on the walls, thought it was dirt, might be mold, too dark in this room to tell for sure. Pillows are old, flat and some lumpy. Brought lovely wine and cheese, did not pack glassware, thought we would have some sort of cups in our room. There were two dentist sized Dixie cups, when liquid was placed in said cups they immediately fell apart. It was cold and we turned on the heater, woke up this morning freezing, only to realize we had no power, heater was off, phones not charged. I would not recommend staying here, praying that when I attempt to bathe in the dilapidated tub/handheld shower contraption that there is hot water. read more

Friends were staying and we were asked to tag along. We found they had a groupon and did no research into the place thinking we were safe. When arriving our friends reservations were lost however that was fixed. The rooms were like going to grandmas to stay. The bed ( for us) was hard. The pillows were awful. The room needed a cleaning and updating. It"s not a B&B as described. Its a cheap place to stay with a bed, shower, and TV. The food at the pub. Dinner I would say for the price was very good. I had an excellent experience with the Powers Mansion. My husband and I got married in June of this past summer (2009). Alfed, the owner, and Jen, one of the head staff, were excellent to work with. They made themselves available to meet with us every month before the wedding to make sure that everything was going to turn out as we wanted it to. While both Alfred and Jen did have a lot of experience and a lot of suggestions to give I never felt the were overbearing in the least. We had the mansion take care of everything from the catering and linens to the photography and DJ. They even took care of the cake for us and the rehersal dinner for us. Everything turned out better than expected, I have no complaints. Not only was our ceremony and reception the best we could have every asked for, but Alfred himself even stayed up late and kept the bar next door open for us and a few friends who still wanted to party. This meant the world to us. We stayed in the honeymoon suite the night of our wedding and enjoyed the best breakfast the next morning with some of our closest friends and relitives who stayed in the mansion with us. There is nothing about my experience with the Powers Mansion that would have changed. I hope to continue to visit the mansion and spend our aniversaries there year after year. read more

My review is about the tearoom at Power's Mansion Inn. After the experience I had last week, and what I read here about the B&B experiences, I wanted to add the fact that the tearoom is owned and operated separately. Two women, Chris and Dena, have recently rented the lower floor of this lovely old Victorian and serve a delicious tea menu with a nice selection of loose-leaf teas. This was recommended to me by another tea lover and I wasn't disappointed. The scones were warm and flaky, filled with generous chunks of fruit and served with beautiful scoops of lemon curd and mock Devonshire cream. We had ours with soup and quiche - all great. I chose an oolong tea and it was brewed perfectly. My friend had a ceylon tea and was also pleased. I met a friend there and we were served at a table in front of the fireplace. I could see two other beautifully decorated rooms but didn't take a full tour. What I did notice was a nice attention to detail - beautiful plates, great food, flowers on the table, our teapots refilled without asking and a peaceful place to spend an afternoon with a good friend. read more

Stayed at the Power's Mansion Inn for a night for my boyfriend's birthday; we stayed in the Burgundy Room. The B&B is located near downtown Auburn and is within walking distance to stores and restaurants. I will say that finding the entrance was a bit tricky, we ended up in the kitchen area and had to walk through the Tea Room and parlor to get to the front. It wasn't bad, however, was scared that my bag was going to hit and break a couple of teapots lol. Check-in was efficient and done by the owner, Alfred. He seems like a nice guy who's enthusiastic about his B&B; he reminded us that breakfast, which is cooked by him, is served at his restaurant next door. Our room was nicely decorated with an Armoire that contained a couple of hangers and an extra blanket. The bedding was SUPER comfortable and slept like a baby :). Granted there was some scratches and peeling paint/wallpaper, but the Victorian is over 100 years old, so it's not going to be perfect. Breakfast was delicious and, surprisingly, hearty for a B&B. Bacon, sausage, hash brown, quiche and cinnamon rolls were Mmmmmm...good. Alfred chatted to everyone, but wasn't intrusive. Afterwards, we talked to him about his homemade brews and wines; even bought a couple of bottles home (asked him to autograph them lol). Nice trip out to Auburn. Will be back to try the Tea Time they offer. read more
