The WOMAN, wife or whomever she is, the one who sounds "different" when she speaks, is RUDE (maybe she's having a bad day, I'll let it slide) and unapologetic about the food being "fishy" and smelling bad. Amici sounds like it should be an Italian Restaurant, but don't let that confuse you. It's one of the best neighborhood sushi restaurants in the area. Shawn is the owner and has been taught Japanese cooking techniques. My personal test is to try their soba noodles. Once soba hits the right consistency (a little more than Al Dente), it needs to be thrown into an ice bath to stop the cooking process. If your noodles are soggy, this wasn't done. He hits the spot. His sushi is a little more toward American taste (a little larger), but has the freshness and temperature I look for. The tempura comes out golden brown and his fusion dishes are fun and layered with different flavors. On top, Shawn is a friendly guy and recognizes his repeat customers. The place is simple and clean, but brace yourself-it's not budget and sometimes, not for the faint of heart. The total can run up quickly. I ordered sushi from another place and stopped by here to grab my sauces as they did not put them in the bag for my to-go order. The OWNER is very rude. He was insulted that I came in to pay for sauces rather than sitting down for sushi. He charged me $10 for a minuscule amount of Spicy Mayo and Unagi and made me feel as if I was in the wrong for COMING TO PURCHASE something. I thought maybe he thought I had the intention of getting free sauces, but I had my wallet and card in hand. We decided to grab sushi after doing errands and we had been here a couple of times and remember enjoying it but it had been some time. I'm not sure if it's the same owners but it does seem family run wish husband and wife cooking/serving. They had a helper who seemed like was learning but the attitude for the owner lady running the show was just cold and unwelcoming. I had kids with me so I'm not sure if that's what annoyed her, or if she was just having a bad day. But we see it ourselves part of the direction of the gentleman. No one came around for a bit to ask us for drinks or our office. I tried to wave down the lady when she was helping another table that came after us and she just told me to wait . It was 30 minutes to closing time, and we tried to get our order in over the phone. It didn't go very smoothly. Not sure where the confusion was but we spoke to 2 different ppl just to place a simple takeout order. Maybe they were afraid we won't make it to pick up before closing? The chicken katsu was nice and crispy. Not very fond of the dipping sauce. It seems like a diluted version of the teriyaki sauce - and that was already on the watery bland side. The beef teriyaki was quite overcooked and chewy. The salad dressing was overwhelming garlicky, and this is coming from someone who triples the garlic in every recipe. Seems like they're always trying to cut costs by not having enough staff on hand. The sushi is so mid level grade it's terrible. Not to mention extremely overpriced for what they are trying to pitch as high quality sushi. 21 for the power of love roll and 12 for a hand roll? WTF?! Rolls are overstuffed with rice to compensate for lack of fish. Fish was not a great cut and the Unagi was chewy as hell. And as expected presentation was the cherry on top of how asss this place is. This place and mikasa ain't it chief. Keep it moving and grab sushi in Stockton or Tracy. Or choose another type of meal for the day. read more

One of my favorite experiences to have is when I don't have any expectations for a place and I get completely blown away. That's exactly what happened here! We started off with the spicy garlic edamame and they were delicious. Really good start to the meal. Very flavorful and gave us a good impression on what was to come. We had two sushi rolls, the catapiller roll and the ??? Roll. Both were very unique and fresh. All of the sides went so well with the rolls. We came here after a long day at a nearby Jiu Jitsu tournament nearby and wanted quality food served quickly. We walked in and part of our party was already seated. We were given menus and greeted by their friendly server/staff. She patiently took our order (there were 7 of us). Two of us ordered iced green tea and they bought us out a pitcher of it! Tasted slightly sweet and very refreshing. So we ordered the Sashimi Deluxe (18pcs), Shawn roll, and the Spicy Tuna Handroll. We got a soup and a salad, both very good. It was my first time coming to this restaurant and I've been wanting to try this place since it had good reviews. I drove 30 mins from home just to try this local sushi place. Sad to say, I'm extremely disappointed. Here are my thoughts... Service - Customer service was mediocre. I believe I was greeted by the owner/chef when I walked in. They only had one waiter so it seems like they're short staffed. I waited for a good 5-10 mins before being helped. Then waited for another 10 mins before the waiter can bring my check so I can pay for my order. Incomplete Order - One of the items I ordered was a bento box (but they called it a combination plate) was supposed to come with rice, soup, and salad. They forgot to put the rice in the bag for my bento box and didn't double check. Cost - I ordered 9 things and it costs about $134-135. It is actually more expensive than other places I've been to ordering similar food and it would have been under $100. I ordered the Salt & Pepper Soft Shell Crab appetizer and didn't know it was one small crab sliced in half and that costs $11, which was not worth it. So I looked at my receipt, I saw a $1 charge for take out. I didn't ask why there's such charge when I should've so that part was on me and can't blame anyone. As far as I'm aware, I haven't seen any sushi restaurants in Stockton or other places besides the bay area that would charge customers a fee for take out due to COVID. I personally don't agree with that surcharge because it's not fair to customers and I don't support this behavior. Had I known about this I would've reconsidered coming here. Taste of Food - This is where I have some MAJOR red flags. 1) The cold foods and hot foods were put together in the same bag, which is wrong and it's a no no. You HAVE to keep them separate and never in the same bag. I had a bento box with sashimi and tempura that came with soup and salad. One bag had the sashimi, tempura, and miso soup put together in one bag. The hot soup changed the taste and temperature of the sashimi. I saw the tuna fish slice was partially cooked and I saw the box had watery liquid. Sashimi should be more on the dry side and there shouldn't be any liquid from the fish at all. Then when I took a bite, I can't get past that warm taste and had to spit it out. That piece of tuna was tossed out. 2) One of my other things I ordered was Spicy Garlic edamame. I think they used fresh garlic so the garlic was burnt and it gave a bitter taste. Their spicy level was way too spicy and I think they put too much. 3) I ordered 4 rolls and to my surprise, there was absolutely no flavor! The California Roll is a classic example and typically you can't go wrong ordering this but obviously it did go wrong. They used snow crab which gave me a weird taste. The cucumbers didn't seem fresh and the rice was rather dry so it makes me wonder if they put the right amount of rice vinegar or if its the type of rice they used the went wrong. But I definitely saw some gap in the center of the roll and it wasn't rolled and pressed tightly. I felt there was too much rice and the pieces were thick cut which I'm not too fond of. To sum this up, this was the worst sushi I've had in my entire life. I am a sushi lover since middle/high school and over time I learned how traditional sushi making is prepared, what is used etc. That is how passionate I am when it comes to sushi. I am not looking for quantity but more of quality. And when I eat sushi, I would look at the sushi chef if they have the technique and skill when preparing fresh fish and making sushi rolls. I don't think I will return after this experience. Please note, this is strictly my personal opinion and I would suggest that you try it out for yourself to determine it. Thank you. read more

Nice little hole in the wall in the middle of a city that doesn't really have much sushi wise. My girl friend came here first, and insisted that I try it after, so we stopped out here on a trip to the bay area. Service was pretty quick, but after delivering the food to the table, they weren't really too attentive to us. It seemed like the waiter was mainly focused on the new people sitting down, that he didn't really check up on any of the tables that were there unless we flagged him down for the check. The food was okay. Nothing wrong with it, but also not the best I've had. Previously I've talked about a rice to roll ratio for my sushi, and this place had a thicker layer of rice than my liking. Everywhere is different, and I understand that, but It felt like I tasted the rice more than the filling of the roll. The concept of one of the rolls though were interesting. The Lily roll had an extra sauce where it was like you were making your own spicy mayo to dip the roll in. It really made the roll taste different as I tried it with and without the sauce. Putting something on a plate to get a different concept of the roll really interreges me, so this was a nice surprise. The taste of the fish was a bright spot as well. Majority of it was good. The toro didn't melt in my mouth like I hoped it was, but I did eat it at the end, and the rest of the fish was nice and buttery. Maybe it set me up for higher expectations eating it in the order that I did, but I always like to save the toro for last because it's one of my favorite sashimi, but unfortunately it was the only one to disappoint. For being in an area where there's not really any sushi, it hits the mark, but compared to other places, it's alright. I'd give it a try again just to see if anything else is like the Lily roll. read more

The friendly family-run restaurant has an inviting ambiance and a wonderful menu. It's located right of the ramp off I-5 in Lathrop. It'll be well worth your time.
