I'm always on the lookout for a good Mexican restaurant, in case I need a burrito all of a sudden, for emotional reasons. Amigos Cantina might be the place to go in Kirkwood, which strikes me as the kind of place where the spice level is often inquired about. I'm not even sure if there's a Taco Bell nearby. I did a five-mile run before I sat down to eat, but it was mostly through residential areas. I kept the volume at a reasonable level, out of respect. I never actually went into the restaurant. A member of our group went in and requested a table for like 12, but then we just ended up sitting at the tables out front, on the sidewalk. We were considering those tables anyway, as connoisseurs of al fresco dining, but someone said there was also a patio out back. If the interior is anything like the sidewalk out front, I'm sure it's just lovely. The signage reminds me of the branding on one of those taco kits you get at the grocery store. I consulted Copilot while I was at work, doing desk calisthenics, getting myself pumped up. You may recall that I also sought its counsel before a trip to a Jersey Mike's a while back. (If they've yet to release a version of it in Italy, they might consider calling it Consigliere.) Specifically, I asked it the best thing to order. It recommended a few entrees featuring the shrimp, which must be highly regarded, and a certain kind of margarita. I can't remember which margarita it was, and I didn't end up ordering it. Separately, I saw where someone posted a picture of a flight of margaritas, and I knew I just had to have that. I've been obsessed with flights of drinks since I saw one was available at a brewery I recently visited. I didn't get one, and I've been kicking myself ever since. It might be my life's greatest regret. With the flight, you get to pick four of six available flavors. I got the peach, amaretto, raspberry and pomegranate, and I know one of the other available flavors was orange. It comes in its own custom tray, designed to be carried without being spilled. Each one is a decent-size drink, but they're not especially stiff. Ayo! As you might suspect, given the (overall) amount of alcohol you get, it's not exactly top shelf. But it's not the Kool-Aid-tasting swill that comes from a dispenser either. Of the four I got, I preferred the peach and raspberry to the amaretto and pomegranate. I went with Cilantro Lime Shrimp, which *was* in fact one of the recommendations from my trusty copilot. It was great! It's served over rice, so it kinda soaks up the liquid from the shrimp, but without becoming overly soupy. They obviously make these all the time and have gotten it down to a science. They fan out the shrimp on the plate so it seems like they've given you more than they have, but it's still a pretty decent amount, for a dish that's not that expensive. It's garnished with fajita-like peppers and a surprisingly piquant, erm, pico. The lime really sets it off. It's served with tortillas, and I packed each one with a bit of rice in addition to shrimp, peppers and what have you. It made for a surprisingly hearty meal, like one of those cans of soup that's advertised primarily to men. If, for some reason, I find myself in the area again, and I'm in need of a burrito, I'll be back, and hopefully I'll take a look inside and explore the menu further. read more

Uugghh, I hate to change my review but after a few times, I must provide an update. I usually order takeout and lately the quality has not been consistent. My order was wrong and I'm glad I checked before leaving. Staff was nice about it but it took a long time to correct a minor item. By this time, my other items are getting cold and soggy waiting over 10 minutes to correct their mistake. The chips are stale/old or just not heated. Mind you, this was ordered 3 hours before closing. It's a shame because this was our go-to place but I think we need to give them a break. read more

I went with a few couples on a Friday night and it was good. The margarita was the highlight of my meal. The rice was nothing special. The fish tacos were good but nothing to rave about. We came here on a Saturday afternoon. We were seated right away. The service was excellent. Everything came quickly and the servers were friendly. We ordered the chicken & steak fajitas. It didn't come out sizzling which was fine but it also wasn't very hot. The beans, rice, and tortillas weren't very hot either. However, the flavor was good! I think the chicken and steak were a little dry but they were tender. The chips and salsa was good. The salsa was a little spicy but it was good! After seeing a fantastic performance of NJT's "The Wanderers" at the J's Wool Studio Theatre in Creve Coeur, we made our way to Kirkwood to find a place for dinner. When we passed Amigos Cantina, it was so colorful and inviting that it wasn't hard to decide on this place for dinner. A few outdoor, out-front tables created a pleasant place for people-watching with a drink, while the inside dining room and large covered back patio provided plenty of space for couples, families, and larger groups. The chips served before the meal were noticably good! While the salsa (medium) was a bit too hot for me to enjoy for long, the chips wrre perfectly cooked and seasoned and served warm--some of the best restaurants tortilla chips I've had! I started my order with un sangria rojo, which contained vino tinto (red wine), brandy, peach Schnapps, cinnamon, and muddled fruit juices. It was fantastic! For dinner, I enjoyed three tacos de portobello with avocado verde sauce, all on corn tortillas. The portobello slices and roasted peppers in my tacos were nicely seasoned, while the corn pudding it came with was FAN.TAS.TIC! With five or so different salsas and two types of tortillas to choose from, the tacos could have a variety of tastes. And, mine were so good that I may have to get them again next time with a different sauce! My partner got the stuffed pablano pepper, which was stuffed with seasoned shredded chicken, walnuts, raisins, and spices, topped with a goat cheese cream sauce (which I took some of for one of my tacos!). He says it was delicious, as were the beans and rice it came with. The pepper was a bit sweet, and the goat cheese cream sauce was light and savory. Our server was great, too, keeping our water glasses full and providing recommendations when requested. Ambiance: 5 Food: 5 Drinks: 5 Service: 5 OVERALL: 5 Over all, the deliciously savory (yet not too heavy) food, fantastic covered back patio, and great sangria earns Amigos Cantina a perfect score in my book. This spot is so adorable on the outside, so my hopes were high. Love a habanero margarita, and this one didn't disappoint, though not my favorite ever. My meat was a little fatty and I thought my meal lacked some flavor, but the salsa verde that was served with it made up for it. We were sat very quickly and had excellent service. Kirkwood has a lot of restaurants, but we somehow hadn't tried this one out yet. I'm always in search of a good, authentic Mexican restaurant. Well, as authentic as possible. I would definitely say Amigos Cantina is on the Americanized end of the spectrum. The atmosphere was loud but cute and somewhat authentic. The booths are really hard and could really use some cushions. However, the food and drinks were delicious. The margaritas were amazing. We also started with the Monterey Jack Cheese Dip, which is only $3 for a pretty decent portion size. Between the complimentary salsa and the cheese dip, we were pretty happy. The rest of our entrees were great too. Shockingly, this place has great Chicken Tenders. Don't ask me why, but they tasted like they were made in house. The only reason for a 4 star rating is the service. Our server charged our card for a $104 bill and our bill was only $47. She reversed the charge but it took like 20 minutes for her to figure it out. A 5 star atmosphere/food experience marred by 2 star service. We've never been charged wrong like that, but we would come back and hope we get a different server. read more

I was there with a friend last Friday. The weather happened to be really nice so we were able to sit out on the patio/porch. It is always a pleasure to sit out there and watch the sunset. The service is spot on. Chips and salsa are delivered promptly and drink orders submitted right behind it. There is one word that comes to mind when I eat here....fresh. The food is always fresh, hot and tasty. El Porche (their back patio) is my favorite, heated in the winter and open-air in the summer, but the inside is always nice too with funky Mexican decor. Something I'll always count on is their chips and salsa, and they bring as many refills as you'd need. I'm obsessed with their inspired seafood (shrimp stuffed poblano pepper and spicy Mexican white fish), but you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. FIRE margaritas too. Staff were friendly. I ordered a margarita flight which was delicious and priced at $16. Wanting to try something new I opted for amigas carnitas. Main meat pork shoulder. My mom opted for shrimp poblano pepper. I attached menu below for ingredients and pricing. Now my meal the amigas carnitas was just ok. The pork shoulder was cooked to perfection but the meal itself sounds better than it actually is. Everything came that was supposed to come I just was not impressed. My mom dish the shrimp poblano she hated. This description stated sautéed shrimp but it must be sautéed down to a puree, it was invisible looking like a dip sauce. Thank god our server was able to replace it with another dish of buffalo chicken tenders but that was not impressive either . Either way the service and compassion was there so we were not mad. Downtown Kirkwood is bustling with great spots so parking is challenging but you can eventually find a spot within a couple blocks. Sitting at the bar is enjoyable if you can't find a spot on the patio. The bartenders are usually really talkative and friendly. On a nice day, the patio is pleasant and above the parking level. The portions are all very substantial, and nice flavored. I enjoyed the meat lovers which provided a sampling of chicken, pork and beef. All had their unique toppings. The only thing I'd love to see are some changes to the side sauces. I think they could create a more robust set of really special flavored sauces to enhance everything more so. But everything's always good and a great value overall! The margaritas are always yummy here as well. My jalapeño marg had fresh peppers with seeds. One of my pals wanted to go here. It's her favorite Mexican restaurant. She loves the fish dish. Apparently it's a lot of people's favorite place. This place was busy. I love to see that. We sat down and our waiter immediately came up with water and chips/salsa. We didn't even get our coats off. That's service!! I tried the salsa that we were given and it was WAY too hot for me. (As you know, I'm a wuss with heat.) Soooo I wanted something to eat with my chips so guacamole was the choice. Stopped at Amigos on a weeknight to meet a friend for an early dinner. We shared a small order of the Monterey Jack Cheese Dip. It had a very nice flavor. I really liked the salsa as well. It had some heat to it and I like that. Usually the table salsa has no flavor at most restaurants. For dinner I ordered the Meat Lovers Enchiladas that had chicken, pork, and beef with red sauce, cheese sauce, and green sauce. Everything was good. It's a great dish to order if you're not sure exactly what you want that way you can try different things. My dinner date got the fajitas and was pleased. The service was friendly and speedy. This little gem of a Mexican restaurant is located right in the heart of Kirkwood off Jefferson. I was not familiar with it but I will be going back. The food was great, the place was packed, and the menu extensive. I recently found out that most Mexican restaurants make their own chips. Amigo's chips were so good they were almost addicting. We got the fajita burrito which was huge, bursting with all sorts of flavors and had just enough cheese on it that it wasn't drowning in it. The spicy Mexican fish was perfect in that it wasn't too spicy but very flavorful seasoned with their own house made rub, seared and topped with a zesty yogurt sauce. Thought we'd try to give this place another chance since Session Taco has declined in quality and it's the only other chips and salsa place in downtown Kirkwood. Bad idea. The salsa was so hot I couldn't eat it. The crab cakes were less crab than cornbread and were oddly covered in a can of black olives with the juice dumped I guess because the sauce was watery and horrible. This was my first time here and was surprised this place has been around for 15 years (and I'm just now trying it)! The most interesting thing about the atmosphere here is the covered patio. I really enjoyed being able to sit outside and watch people walking by. The decorations are kinda funky too, which I like! The vibe is very casual and fun. My table ordered a bevy of Silver and Black Cadillac Margaritas and they were delicious . My wife and daughter shared the Chicken, Steak and Shrimp fajitas. The chips and salsa was adequate. Overall, we all enjoyed the food but it was not remarkable.....good enough it was. My husband and I have come here a couple of times before heading to trivia next door. The first time we both got margaritas and didn't really like them. But the food was delicious! I got the shrimp and chicken fajitas and I'm pretty picky on my meat protein, but they were SO good. The shrimp was a little flavorless, but the chicken was very tender and flavorful.
