The best thai food in the Montgomery county area! It's a small dining area but I'm use to it living in New York. But the service is great and order to go, same great food. Yum yum was my favorite place to eat Thai in NYC (stay tuned for my raved review on that one) so I thought I couldn't find a place here in the DC area that was as good. Boy did they surprise me. Definitely one of the better Thai restaurants in the DC area. I decided to try it based on the reviews on Yelp, and I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical when I saw that the place was in an obscure plaza hidden away in the corner (took me 3 tries to get into the correct parking lot). However, upon entering, I was very impressed with what they've done with the tiny space - it actually seems rather spacious once you get inside, and it is very clean and well-kept with a casual, relaxed atmosphere. The waitress was extremely friendly and service was quite excellent. As for the food, I usually judge Thai restaurants not based on their Pad Thai like most people, but based on their curry. Amina Thai is a close second to Sala Thai as far as the curry goes, but it was still very good. The portions were also significantly more generous than any other Thai restaurant I've experienced. The Fresh Mango and Sticky Rice dessert was simply amazing. Far and away the best mango and sticky rice in the DC area. Amina Thai almost earns five stars, but just a little tiny something was missing from the curry. Nonetheless, Amina Thai has definitely jumped near the top of my list for Thai restaurants in the area. read more

After reading all the reviews, I had high hopes for this place. The spring rolls were pretty good. My dish that I get at every Thai restaurant, Red Curry with Chicken, was probably the worst I've ever had. It came with huge slices of eggplant (which I've never seen), and really that was all it tasted like. It was so bland that I couldn't even tell I was eating red curry. There was some slight heat to it (not much), but NONE of the flavors that normally come with red curry were detectable...essentially, it tasted like coconut milk, slight heat, and eggplant. I'm not even sure if I want to eat the leftovers, or just throw them away. It was just that bad :( As a side note, I usually add pineapple to my red curry for $1 at thai restaurants in the area, this place charged $3, which I found ridiculous. read more

Don't believe the 4 Star rating. Amina Thai serves thai food that is halal (acceptable for consumption by observant Muslims). Not unexpectedly, many (but not all) of their customs are observant Muslims. Absolutely nothing against Muslims, but if you only eat halal and most Thai restaurants aren't halal, then you don't have a great frame of reference. Normally I don't even like Pad See Ew but it was so good here. The right ratio of salty to sweet and a flavor I can't quite place. Regrettably I had to share, next time I get my own. Their service was on point, the host/server was always polite and attentive. They even offered a plate change after our apps. Price wise, they're not cheap for the amount they give you ($12 ish for the Pad see ew/ $15 ish for 5 battered shrimp) but we were happily full regardless. Definitely give this place a try. I've been visiting Amina Thai for almost 10 years now for the consistently delicious and authentic halal Thai food. It's difficult enough finding good halal food so imagine my surprise at finding out there was a halal Thai restaurant that was also great! Its a cozy place with total seating for maybe 25-30 people but I've never had trouble finding seating. I haven't had anything in particular that I didn't like but my favorites which I almost always order are the yum nua (sliced beef steak) app, chicken pad kaprow (chicken sautéed in a basil sauce with veggies) entree, and chicken pad kee mao (thick rice noodles with veggies) entree. All three are bursting with flavor and just the right amount of heat for my taste. The yum nua in particular is something I always look forward to. And everything is fresh and comes out without much wait. I gotta give a shout out to the friendly service as well :-) read more

Very average experience at Amina. I came here on a weekday afternoon with my mother, and we were immediately seated... and abandoned. Only 2 other tables were occupied at the restaurant, so it was odd that we had to keep waving vigorously to get the servers' attention, but this--along with generally rude service--soon became a trend throughout the meal. We started out with a Thai Iced Tea and Spring Rolls which were both really excellent!! Unfortunately, when our main courses were brought out about 30 minutes later, they severely paled in comparison. We ordered Massaman Curry and Yellow Curry, both with Tofu and Vegetables. However, they both ended up tasting exactly the same, and both had only tofu in curry sauce. Neither had vegetables or pineapple or just... anything else you'd find in curry, nor were they distinct from each other in any way. The blocks of tofu were HUGE--and eating them alone with rice was too weird for us to continue, so we just took them to go and left. So uh... I guess maybe we just got wrong things at Amina? All the glowing reviews made me think I would be getting spectacular Thai food, but, other than the appetizers, it was all fairly bland--in every way. read more

The service is quick, and the lunch specials are cheap. Portion sizes are about moderate. I got the drunken noodles, which were a little too onion-heavy for me. The sauce that the drunken noodles were in was a little on the bland side, and I'm used to my drunken noodles being much spicier. I would not have stopped at this place if it hadn't been for this website. While traveling through Maryland during the Holidays, we stopped to visit a friend who "just" moved to the area. We suggested Yelp (which he never heard of until now) and narrowed it down to two places. I started with a Thai Iced Coffee which is always delicious. For the table, we ordered green curry chicken, pad Thai and chicken with vegetables. All dishes were delicious and so very fresh. The staff was extremely attentive and the restaurant was super clean. While the menu was sufficient, my only disappointment was that it didn't offer a larger variety of tastes. Since I don't like/can't eat spicy food, I was limited on what I could order. read more

And I've got to say that all of the dishes I've had are absolutely unparalleled in the Rockville area. I especially recommend the yum nua and satay as starters! Once again, thankful for yelp reviewers who put me onto this little Thai gem in Bethesda! It sits in a tight little shopping center on the corner, so drive slowly or you may cruise right past it. Decided to grab dinner here on my last night in Bethesda. I placed a take out order of spring rolls and Chicken Massaman. The spring rolls were perfect: crispy and light and absolutely delicious. The curry dish was yummy, too, with big chunks of potatoes, onion and tender chicken. Great dinner for around $22 with tip. Definitely recommend this place and if work brings me back this way again, I'll be back for some more of those spring rolls! read more

I had dinner here with my friend a few nights ago. The one thing that I was disappointed with is the fact that they don't serve beer. It is however a halal restaurant, so that's understandable. The food itself was very good. We ordered the Larb Gai for an appetizer which was a lovely balance of salty, sweet, and just the right hint of spiciness. For entrees we ordered the Green Curry and the Panang curry. The Panang was very aromatic, and perfectly cooked. And likewise the Green curry was fragrant and delicious. For those who like it hot, they do offer a tray of various chilies. The roasted, ground chili powder is made in house and is amazing. Extremely hot, but still very flavorful. The service was also very good. They forgot to bring my friend his drink, but as soon as we pointed this out, they got it for us right away. I wouldn't exactly call this place "cheap," but it's definitely reasonable. And the portions are quite large. All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes Thai cuisine. read more

AMAZING! Learned of them on YELP and had to re-pay the favor with my first ever review! One of those places where the gentleman greets you by the door, his mom is the owner and runs the show (Amina) and the dad is back in the kitchen cooking. (There was one younger lady helping with the tables, maybe sister???) Now to what's important: the FOOD! I had the Beef Kaprow and my wife had the Pad See Ew! Both were well seasoned and served while still hot (temperature). The food tasted fresh and the spices were extremely flavorful. The family was always around to top our water glasses and at the end even brought us a free desert to finish out meal. Don't forget to ask for the home chilli sauces. The red flakes are oven roasted in house and they use the mortar and pestle to open the flavors even more... Great place! Will definitely be coming back! read more

My husband and I do not eat pork so this place seemed like a really good place to try. I love Thai food but my husband has zero tolerance for spicy food. Knowing this, we made sure that the waiter knew that to make our food NON spicy. When we got our food, the chicken panang that my husband ordered was spicy. So of course we called the waiter over and immediately he got this heavy set lady (turns out she is the owner Amina). She was so loud and obnoxious. The place is probably the size of Nordstrom's restroom so it was very embarrassing that she was being so loud with us. She kept saying, "you need to tell us first!" When I tried to explain to her that we did tell the waiter that, she would talk over us and say that we cannot get things for free. She was so rude that I just asked for the check, paid, and left without finishing our food. Really poor service from the owner Amina herself. Not to mention the parking is like pulling teeth. Not only will I never visit this place again, I will tell all my NIH co-workers about my horrible experience. That's how upset she made me. read more

Thai food craving satisfied! I grabbed dinner with my parents here, and we ordered the chicken pad thai, beef pad see ew, and chicken karpow (one of their most popular dishes apparently). I definitely judge a Thai restaurant by the quality of their noodle dishes, and this place delivered on it all. Everything was really good and tasted authentic; I loved the balance of the sweet and savory flavors of the dishes. The place itself is pretty small and could easily be overlooked if you were driving by, but it is very clean and cozy in there. Make sure to grab a thai iced tea on your way out too, mine was pretty bomb. I really want to try out the mango and sticky rice next time, but dinner was already pretty filling! read more

I went with a group of 7 women for dinner the other day - we ordered 4 dishes along with an appetizer and had more than enough food for all of us (very generous portions are another plus!). We ordered the chicken satay to start, then had the mussaman curry, drunken noodles with chicken, cashew chicken, and another beef dish (with peppers) - all of the items were delicious. I particularly liked the beef dish - I generally never eat beef and dislike it, but the beef dish was so delicious I took seconds! Another bonus is that the meat is zabihah/halal (raised and killed in accordance with Muslim dietary laws) so the meat is high-quality and my halal-only friends can eat the meat here. Relatively new to the area and was looking for a new Thai place. The restaurant was pretty empty when I walked in, but the service was fast, and they kept my water full. They were able to adjust my Panang Curry from medium to mild, which I appreciated, but was also probably unnecessary after tasting. The curry sauce was very oily and the coconut milk was separating from the oil when it was served. The sauce was thin, and didn't feel as substantial as I would have liked. read more
