On Saturday we dined at Ammatoli and had a mixed experience overall. We started with the dip trio (mutabal, hummus, and red pepper) along with the fresh baked pita bread. The dips had the expected flavor profiles and were enjoyable, but nothing really stood out as memorable. The pita bread was good as well, though it didn't taste much different from quality prepackaged pita. Next, we tried the dumplings based on our server's recommendation. They were good, but again, nothing particularly special or unique. For our main course, we had the steak and lamb skewers along with the roasted cauliflower florettes. I came with my friend around 6:30pm on a week night and we did not make a reservation but were still able to be seated at the bar with no wait. There is parking in front and at the public parking lot (2 hours free)!! From the minute we sat down, Pete, our server, was SO friendly and welcoming! He cheerily wished us a Happy Wednesday and proceeded to help explain the menu to us (almost comedically which made it entertaining) and gave great recommendations. We ordered Jibneh Manoushe (it's like a cheese pizza and is absolutely delicious and paired well with mint leaves), Pistachio Baklawa, and Lemon Garlic Chicken. The Jibneh Manoushe had the softest but also with a little crunch crust! We couldn't get over how doughy good it was :0D And when we added garlic sauce to it, it was perfection!! The Lemon Garlic Chicken was also good and not dry (I was very appreciative of that because most chicken cooked like that comes out dry). It came with delicious rice and two sauces. The first sauce was the Spicy Lemon sauce but it was a little too sour. The second sauce was the amazing garlic sauce!! He knew to check in but keep his distance while we fell into a food coma. When I got to the restaurant I ordered takeout at the bar. I was sat there for maybe 15 minutes and I started to think this is taking kinda long??? I look up to the bar and see a brown bag with a to go order but I thought surely it can't be mine cause they would've brought it to me... and there had been multiple people picking up orders anyways. Sure enough it was mine. I don't know how long it was actually sitting there but regardless the fries were totally cold and limp. They have good flavor but could not even enjoy them. The way the menu is set up it shows the wrap coming as a meal, however on the receipt it shows the wrap and then fries separately. I wish I would have asked for no fries. I definitely wouldn't pay $20 for this again. The chicken was tender and flavorful but I wish the wrap had more veggies in it. It was pretty plain. Delicious Mediterranean food with great service! Was in Long Beach for a conference and wanted to get away from the chain restaurants around the pier. This is just a short walk inland and well worth it. There is both inside and outside seating. We decided to take in the warm Southern California weather and eat outside. Our server did her best to make sure the umbrellas protected us from too much sun. We were a party of 4 and had a range of appetizers and shared a few mains. The chicken kebabs were delicious and came with a few sides. At the recommendation of the server, we tried the Fattet Jaj - a dish none of us had tried before. Been here twice for dinner. Overally it's a fancy place great for celebrating special occasions or going out for an occasional date night. It's reasonably expensive for the food quality and the atmosphere. I much prefer indoor seating over outdoors because the decorations make it feel like you're somewhere not in Long Beach. Portion sizing has always been perfect, meaning that everyone will usually eat all their food with no leftovers, but you'll be full. Although the waiters are knowledgeable, I wish the menu had more pictures because if you're not familiar with Mediterranean or Levantine food, the description doesn't always feel like enough to go off of, but it's a good thing you can see pictures on Yelp. It takes a while for food to come out, but everything is delicious. Spicy Garlic Lemon Chicken - 4.5/5 Pretty solid pick for any first timer that doesn't want to be too adventurous with the menu. Tangy from the lemon. Moussaka - 4.5/5 Delicious, mushy lacking texture but great flavour. Appearance-wise reminds of lasagna. Came with a spicy habanero sauce that was 5/5. Grape Leaves - 5/5 solid, this dish has ruined fast food grape leaves for me Halloumi - 4/5 a slightly salty hard tofu texture. Fruity accents and delicious sauce Zaatar Manoushe - 3.5 or 4/5. My vegetarian friend ordered this as her main meal and she seemed to like it. She let me try some and while I did like it, I felt it was too plain for a main compared to the other dishes we had. Because they don't do substitutions on their menu, I'm undecided whether this restaurant is vegetarian friendly. It's true there are several vegetarian options in the mezzas, breads, soups, and salads, but because this is a family-style restaurant, it seems common to order a sahtain, and many of those have meat. It might be better if the whole party was vegetarian to try more dishes out together in this situation. The food is good regardless. There's a display for some desserts and baked goods in the back near the restrooms. Don't bother trying to get street parking if it's busy - a lot of the zones are for temporary parking. My friends and I wasted time before realizing there was a parking structure down the block with 2 hours free ($2 per half hour after). read more

When I mentioned the issues with the rib-eye he offered to cook it again but that was when we were done eating. Its like inviting someone to your party when its ending. Its too little, too late. No offer to comp bill. Just a hand-shake and a fake smile to send us on our way. Also no candle, no free birthday dessert, nothing. Just extra surprise charges. So disappointing. She was extremely knowledgeable of the menu and able to offer awesome recommendations. She was also very attentive and personable, made for a stellar experience. Having traveled across the Middle East for the past seven years, I always seek out restaurants that claim to capture the flavors of the region. Ammatoli stood out not just for its menu but for Chef Dima's commitment in sharing the impact of her upbringing through her cooking. Naturally, I had high expectations. We started with spicy hummus and fries with Levantine spices (I know, fries is not a good choice to try for the appetizers but I was craving them). The hummus was smooth, paired with warm, fresh pita - always a good idea. However, it wasn't as spicy as I had hoped. It was good but not a standout. One of the highlights of the night was the za'atar manoushe. The first time I ever had manoushe was in Beirut, where I would wake up early and go to a small bakery in the heart of Gemmayzeh. They only had three choices: meat, cheese, and za'atar-; and I always chose za'atar. It became my morning ritual, and ever since, I've been searching for that experience back here. Unfortunately, most of the za'atar I've had in LA doesn't quite capture it - but Ammatoli's version did. The spices were fresh and bold, and the dough was perfectly baked. My partner had never tried za'atar or manoushe before, and he absolutely loved it. This dish alone showed how much effort Chef Dima puts into staying true to her upbringing and sharing the flavors with a community that may not be familiar with them but is eager to learn. For our main dishes, we ordered freekeh and lamb chops. The freekeh, a smoky green wheat dish, wasn't as impressive as I anticipated. While the flavors were there, it didn't leave a lasting impression. However, the lamb chops were outstanding. The meat was incredibly tender, falling right off the bone with each bite. The spices were bold, making every mouthful an experience. My partner and I had that moment where we both gasped at the same time! For desserts, I was surprised to find Osmalieh, a crispy pastry dessert that I've only seen in the Middle East. Seeing it on the menu alone was exciting. Then came the knafeh - the dish that made my night. Finding the perfect knafeh in LA has been a challenge (I've looked far and wide from Little Arabia in OC to Little Persia in West LA), but Ammatoli's version was just right. It had the ideal balance of cheesiness, sweetness, and nuttiness. This alone is enough to bring me back.
