Salt & Straw definitely deserves a top spot on NYC's best ice cream list, which is constantly growing. Top ingredients, unique flavor combinations... classic and monthly options. Although I lean toward the chocolate babka, coffee love nuts, hazelnut cookies & cream, malted chocolate chip cookie dough, I cannot pick a favorite and love other flavors that I have sampled. This time I got a scoop of pistachio ricotta cannoli. I have seen other crazy flavor profiles that have appeared on their monthly rotation that I would like to try! Especially the savoy ones! They have a wonderful team of employees, friendly and professional, and beyond patient with all the sample requests. A single scoop $7.25, double scoop $9.25 plus tax. Scoops are decent size, but wouldn't say overly generous for $7.25, but you are paying for high quality, small batch concept.
Stopped in for a scoop on a Friday night. This place was bumpin! I've heard of Salt &Straw but this was my first time trying it. I see what all the Hype about. This place is a VIBE! The flavors are very unique and the staff is very knowledgeable of each item. They were all incredibly professional and efficient navigating a busy crowd. The line moved smoothly with plenty of time to make a decision and ask questions.
Came in to grab some afternoon ice cream with a friend and our littles. They had so many flavors. We ended up getting lavender honey and rhubarb which was sooo good. Jessie was great. She was super friendly was down to let you try any flavor! The space is very bright and open. Not much seating where you can spend a lot of time in there but a lot of room to chat while standing
Heard about this place for a while, so we stoped in one Friday evening. We figured around 6pm, we'd find the place empty. But we were wrong. There was a pretty good crowd, and most everyone was sampling numerous flavors. Before acting like Larry David, I saw the sign encouraging such behavior. When in Rome.... I tried Pistachio Ricotta Canoli, (which was incredible), but went with the Chocolate Babka w/Hazelnut Fudge. It was ok. My wife had the Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip; (V) for Vegan. It was absolutely scrumptious. Way better than mine, and tasted like it was made with fresh heavy cream. The staff were very friendly, and happily giving out samples. We found a bench outside, and noticed how crowded the place had become. Definitely going back, to try more flavors, and maybe even take something home.
food - 5/5 service - 5/5 ambiance - 5/5 thank you to yelp and salt and straw for inviting me to try their ice cream! i got their double fold vanilla in a cup that is priced at $6.50 pre tax and tip. it was SUUUUPER GOOD! it literally tastes like a really deep and strong vanilla extract which i loved. it wasnt too sweet which is definitely my favorite because ice cream usually gets too sweet when i eat too much. the staff were so sweet and the ambiance was so vibey! please check this place out!
I'm giving four stars for the taste, texture, and time it took for me to devour this small scoop of ice cream. Yes the ice cream was so good, the customer service was great, but I'm just not happy about this small scoop of ice cream I've received. You see from my picture how it fit into my cone. If I know it was going to be a child like scoop I've would have brought two scoops. (Thinking about it now, I would love to see what the child size looks like.) I ordered it with a waffle cone that I threw half of it away because it was just too hard and too much for the small amount of ice cream I had. I just crumbled up half of the cone and put it inside the ice cream cup I requested to take with me and threw the rest of the cone in the garbage. Paying about $8 bucks for such a small scoop is insane. Although this review sounds like I would be giving less stars, but again the ice cream is some DARN good ice cream! I would definitely pass next time on the cone and just stick with the ice cream. Maybe bring me a cooler and buy a quart or pint to go. I'm gonna give Salt & Straw one less star and a thumbs up not two. Happy Yelping folks!
Super cute, super fun store with some awesome ice cream! We happened upon this shop one night after a night out. Great that it's open late (open until midnight). We passed by in the taxi on our way to the hotel and walked back for a late night treat. The guy that helped us (really wish I had gotten his name!) was very nice and told us we could try all the flavors we wanted. It was so fun to try different flavors with real spoons and then dropping the spoons in the little drop boxes. Each flavor was delicious and fresh. We walked away with delicious shakes for our late night snack. They were so good we returned again a few days later with our granddaughter for more good fun. Looking forward to checking out local Salt & Straw stores.

I am such a Salt and Straw fan and have been to both locations multiple times. Love that they encourage you to try lots of multiple flavors, and I always find two amazing ones for a split scoop, which is the way to go. The cones are also great. The customer service is always extremely friendly as well. When I usually go after work with a coworker during a weekday, there is usually no line or nothing more than a 10-minute wait. read more

They have such creative, quirky and innovative flavors of ice cream! The ice creams here are not too sweet and is a bit salty which cuts extra sweetness. My fav is lavender ice cream here - so creamy, fresh and summery! read more

Amazing ice cream and good portions. Salt & straw always has unique flavors. I like sampling the different things that they have. I had a chocolate type of ice cream, but I have also tried strawberry tres leches which was amazing. Staff is friendly and line goes by fast read more
This place just hits every-time! The flavors are always so tasty and fun no matter what time of the year I go. May is a floral theme and has so great options. I went with my tried and true the sea salt and caramel! The staff is always very helpful and you can sample many options! read more

Salt and straw has very rich flavours. We tried their chocolate babka with hazelnut fudge and chocolate gooey brownie. It was very indulgent, and we loved it. Super yum! Also love their portion options. read more

My favorite ice cream stop in the Upper West Side! Still so glad that salt and straw made its way to the east coast. Every evening here the line can often get quite long during peak hours so that's something to keep in mind. There is also no seating in the store, it's solely a take out location. Every month Salt and Straw rolls out a new set of seasonal flavors, some that are very hit or miss but something I do appreciate is their willingness to try new things. This visit I had pumpkin spice zucchini bread which made a fantastic ice cream, and tomato gelato. They also have standard flavors, a big fan of the honey lavender, the olive oil and the sea salt. But in general great ice cream choices, even for those that are GF or Vegan. Highly recommend this spot in UWS. Something I also appreciate is that they do not put any limit or restrictions on your ability to sample new ice cream flavors. I love being able to just ask to try all the seasonal flavors and with no hesitation i am able to try 6-10 flavors. Shoutout to the staff here for being so kind and patient with my sampling request. This location has become a must visit every month. Highly recommend. read more
Dessert trends come and go, but Salt & Straw is no fad. I've been to a few of their locations in Portland, and one in San Diego, so when they announced an expansion to NYC, I knew the city was in for a real treat. Salt & Straw pulls together really unique, interesting flavors like their strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper, and their Arbequina olive oil. Between their interesting menu and the quality of their ice cream, they really do stand out from every other ice cream shop. They have some staples (noted above), and seasonal flavors on rotation. There are also vegan options that go toe to toe with the rest of their menu, rather than feeling like an afterthought. This UWS location usually has a line, but the wait is well worth it. Not a lot of seating aside from some standing areas and a few tables out front when the weather is nice. But definitely worth a shop, figure out where to eat it after you order! read more

Amazing and unique ice cream? Helpful staff? A block away from Central Park? If you are in the area, you need to come and try their ice cream. Not in the area? Grab an Uber. We were in town and decided we needed to get some ice cream and walk through the park. We were a bit intimidated by the menu, which was very creative. Luckily the staff encouraged us to sample as many flavors as we wanted until we could make our choice - although I had to stop because everything was so good it was making my decision more difficult! I ended up going with a scoop of the Oishii Strawberry Pretzel Salad and a scoop of the Salted, Malted Chocolate chip cookie dough. Amazing. read more
There is no ice cream shop in NYC that is comparable to Salt & Straw. Their flavors are so layered and have such a depth that when you try any of their ice cream, you might just think it's the best ice cream you have ever tasted...and it is. We recently went in and got their signature honey lavender and limited edition flavors maple koginut squash with pomegranate and parker house rolls with salted buttercream. They were unbelievable. You must go and try Salt & Straw if you haven't yet. We have been fans since Cali & are so happy they opened in NYC. A big shoutout to Malay at their Amsterdam location. I've heard such incredible things about salt and straw on the West Coast, and I'm so glad it's finally made it to New York City. Be forwarned that the line can get absolutely egregious, but I was lucky to pass by salt and straw on a cold rainy spring day, where there was essentially no line. I was able to try a couple of the flavors and ultimately decided on the honey lavender and the pistachio and ricotta cannoli. Both of these ice creams absolutely hit, and the ice cream strike a nice balance between creamy and flavorful without being too overpowering. They don't really have much seating to speak of inside, but they do have little counters that you can stand at for a quick chat with friends. They have so many interesting unique flavors I would love to try! read more
This was one of my favorite ice cream places that I visited on the west coast. I was so excited they have some locations in nyc! The location is clean and was close to some schools. Unfortunately, they only had one person providing ice cream for customers while everyone else seemed to do other tasks. The line got pretty long and I could tell she was getting overwhelmed. Other than needing one more person on serving customers, this place is great, especially the ice cream and waffle cones. read more

Yay! Saw this place at Disney Springs in Orlando but the line was way too long for me to try it out. They have such interesting flavors and I was bummed we did not have in NYC at the time. Another thing I really like about this place is that they use metal spoons for samples instead of disposable spoons like other places to reduce garbage. I hate wastefulness! The crew is very knowledgable and they will give you a whole spiel about every flavor to try. I went with the goat cheese marionberry habanero. It was delicious. You get that heat right at the end. They always have limited edition flavors and their classic flavors. So good for someone like me who tends to find "classic" flavors a little boring. read more
I have received many recommendations to go here and I'm so glad I finally did. It smells like freshly made waffle cones and service is so warm and welcoming. My go to ice cream shop in NYC! I love this location because it's quieter and has everything in stock! The employees are fabulous and helpful (even let me taste try for buying a pint)! I love the everyday flavor including chocolate babka which was made for their NYC branches. However I recommend any salt and straw because this is the BEST ice cream shop in NYC. They have a few locations and all are super cute with the best employees. The prices are also very fair and they never give you attitude about trying every flavor. Salt & Straw is currently my favorite ice cream parlor in the city. Reliably unorthodox flavors, enormous scoops, unlimited sampling, patient and helpful staff, and freshly griddled waffle cones. I have a sneaking suspicion that they pipe out the aroma of those waffle cones into the street to act as a siren song for unwary passersby. Really, what else could you possibly want from a creamery? We first experienced Salt & Straw during our PNW trip earlier this year, so I was super excited to stumble upon their storefront signage during a random stroll through the West Village earlier this fall. After an initial visit for an Elite Experience, I returned to introduce friends to Salt & Straw and can confidently state that there's no other ice cream shop I'd rather visit! read more

I am so happy they finally have an east coast location! The service may vary when you come in depending on the service, but they do let you taste all the flavors. They switch about 5 flavors for the seasonal menu and then the rest are apart of the permanent menu. It looks like all their west coast locations so nothing different there, and it's located on a busy corner so summer time should be really busy! But it had some minor New York signage in the inside. read more

Delightful. Also it's my first time coming to this ice cream place and their ice cream flavors are insane, wildly fascinating but brilliant! You could free taste those insane concoctions like feta cheese, olive oil and what not! But anyways, I stick to my caramel and chocolate flavors haha! The servers are nice and jolly, and also they do their own waffle cone! I would say, grab a cup or cone and people watch along Upper West. Divine experience! read more
I love Salt & Straw. They have such unique flavors and they always features seasonal surprises. I missed their October Candytopia flavor but visited on November 1st, to be one of the first to sample their Thanksgiving flavors. Right now, they have Turkey Stuffing and Cranberry Sauce, Pumpkin Spiced Tiramisu, Sweet Potato Casserole, Parker House Rolls w/ Salted Buttercream, and Mom's Mango Pie. My fave out of the bunch is the Parker House rolls flavor. It's simple but I like it. My go-to will always be Coffee and Love Nuts. Visit, try every flavor, and choose wisely. If you're like me and have a few faves, get a split cup or cone, and buy some pints to take home. Don't forget the cones! read more
Every flavor we tried was amazing! I love that they use real mini spoons, not single use plastic spoons, to sample flavors. The staff were friendly and patient while we decided which flavors to order. We didnt feel rushed, and there was plenty of space inside while we devoured all the deliciousness. They also have a freezer where you can buy a pint of your favorite flavor to take home, or they do local delivery. I can't wait to come back to try some other monthly/seasonal flavors! read more
I will start by saying I am not one that loves to try new things. Salt and straw had some very different flavors such as Pastrami and rye and a Thanksgiving turkey and cranberry flavor. We tried the Parker House rolls and salted buttercream. The ice cream was very creamy and full of flavor. As a fairly new business, the line was very long. So just expect this if you are going to try it or pick an off time. And definitely keep an open mind for the unique flavors they offer. The staff was very informative and was willing to let us try as many flavors as we were willing. So if you're brave, take a trip down and try some very different types of ice cream or just stick with their version of chocolate or vanilla, The only reason I gave four stars instead of five is because I thought they were overpriced and I was not a fan of the flavors but that may not be your experience. read more
