I wish I lived in Manhattan so I could walk into Amy's Bread every day just to let the scent of fresh baked bread hit me in the face. During my visit to NY, I walked past Amy's Bread once, regretted not walking in, so I went back to try some of their bread. My friends had their toast, which was nothing short of amazing. They must but coat the bread with some addictive substance because damn... it was so good. Per my friend's recommendation, I had their hot chocolate. If you're a fan of chocolate, you will love theirs. It is extremely rich and apparently they put homemade marshmallows in there! Oh I almost forgot I had their gingersnaps too. They were meh compared to the other two items, but that's not saying much because the other two were sooo good! Only bad part is limited seating :( read more

Possibly one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I have ever had, for a price of around $7 with tax. This is a great place to visit if you are in need of a quick but delicious and fresh tasting lunch. I was surprised that the sandwiches were going to be so tasty when they are already pre-made, but I was pleasantly surprised by my grilled cheese once they put it on the panini press. The sandwich is made with not only cheese but also tomatoes and onions. It is truly a wonderful take on a classic. There are no tables inside this shop that mainly caters for those in need of a take out lunch (perfect for those heading back to their desk or to a lunch on the Highline). However, there is a counter area with a few seats. I need to come back here to try their pastries. Also, they sell loaves of bread too which look delicious, but as of this instant I can only vouch for the grilled cheese. read more

For less than the price of a smoothie, you can get a delicious single serving pizza from Amy's Bread. I opted for the broccoli rabe, red onion, and cheese pie and it was delicious ($8.25). Amy's has it's hits and misses, but it consistently gets high marks from me. They consistently have high quality breads available to the public. Great sourdoughs among other things. Also delicious sourdough chocolate twists for a nice sweet bite (although they are much, much better if you take them home and warm em up). I've had a cupcake that was only so-so, but when I without-a-doubt need high quality, easily accessible, fresh bread, Amy's is where it's at. read more

What a mess! Problem #1: I ordered a "grilled" cheddar and ham biscuit. The lady asked me: do you want hot? I said: YES. Simple right?? Well, came with meted cheese outside and dead cold inside. Problem #2: my wife ordered one of their breakfast specials. That was supposed to come with jam and bread and some other stuff. The pot of jam came open and 1/2 full. I went to complain. The lady said: oooo o thought something was wrong with that Jam!!! Really ??? Come'on!!! Problem #3: I asked 2 cappuccinos, the lady forgot to add to our order and didn't know how to fix in the register the freaking order! At that point I just gave up! Amy's Bread??! Tried the "best in nyc" sticky bun and was disappointed. While the glaze and pecans were not to sweet the bun itself was gummy. Slightly better than a supermarket bun but hopefully not the best that NYC has to offer. read more

They have so many options, so it's a bit intimidating to go through the line when people are waiting. Service was super friendly though. Everything was great - moist, good textures and chewiness. Olive twist - chewy, fresh and briny. A little greasy on the fingers which was odd but still very good Chocolate sourdough twist - lots of semisweet chocolate chunks throughout chewy, springy bread. So good. Mini ham and cheese panini on potato bread - love the size and taste. Melty, crispy outer layer with chewiness underneath. A good little ham and cheese melt. read more

Awesomeness. I know I've started out another review with this word, but who cares -- for $10, I got a large loaf of challah bread, 4 cheese biscuits, and 3 organic wheat rolls (I wish I remembered more, b/c they were almost like whole grain and some black seed-things on top). Wow. Again, Wow. I had just spent $12 on like 7 lbs. of produce at the market across the way, so I was a little peeved that my $10 only got me these things -- but who am I kidding, the quality was terrific: * the challah bread made a terrific french toast bake (with a third of the loaf to spare, after feeding 4), * the biscuits were the perfect softness + cheesiness (not greasy, not hard, not dry, they were great!), and * the rolls -- as terrible as this is, I am forever hoping to find the Cheesecake Factory brown bread somewhere, and these bore a vague physical resemblance. No, not the same, but soo tasty -- maybe b/c my expectations were low (always disappointed brown bread I buy is not the CF bread), but I would def buy these again. I have yet to try everything so 'til then four stars from me. First, it's a carb-factory that emits the most wonderful smells of baked goodness that makes me giddy. Lovin' it already! Got carrot-zucchini muffin ($2.25). Tasty flavor and spiced aroma. It has shredded carrots and zucchini throughout the muffin. Sprinkled with small walnut chunks and raisins (although not very much but enough). Only complaint is that the texture is a little off. No crusty muffin top (unless you take it home and broil it in a toaster oven for a few minutes like I did). The interior crumb of the muffin is very moist (because of the carrots and zucchini)...that, I think, is what throws off the texture of the muffin. More gummy than fluffy. Also bought their signature loaf of bread: the semolina with raisins and fennel. Have yet to try but can't wait! I'm thinkin' brie...or almond butter...or french toast...or bread pudding... read more

WHAT COSTS FIFTY CENTS THESE DAYS???? they also give a very generous amount of bread twist for only a dollar and and half. the loaves here are also moderately priced! my friend recommended i try the red velvet cupcake here. and yes it was UBER! ok well i personally love the chocolate sourdough twists. but if chocolate is not your fancy well... ALL WERE VERY GOOD!!! the baguettes , and loaves here are also uber yummy. i wanted wait until i got home and savor my multigrain and black olive loaves with cheese and grilled eggplant but i ripped those tasty bastards up in the subway ride back . sad* no restraint!! oh and all the people working there were darlings =). read more

If I buy a baguette, I always need an extra one because half a loaf will be gone before I get home. Love the one in Chelsea Market where you can watch them make the stuff. I sat in front of the window watching the guys make bread for quite a while. It's mesmerizing :) I finally went inside to get something to eat. Since I already had a big ol' snickerdoodle, I went and got a croissant. The inside was soft and the outside was light and buttery, just the way it should be. You must get the chocoholic twist or chocolate sourdough twist!! With just the right amount of chocolate chips, the choco twist is amazingly delicious, with a consistency oh so perfect, not too overwhelmingly rich or sweet. For only $1.60, all your sorrows and pains will go away with Amy's signature chocolate twist. Note, if you leave it out even for a few hours the bread will become hard. Not only do I come here for the bread, pastries and baked goods, but this is my go-to-salad place for lunch. Amy's Bread offers salads such as tuna salad, hummus salad, chickpea and beet salad, cannelleni bean salad, with olive oil dressing and includes a complimentary roll of bread - get the pecan! (normally $0.65). All this for $7.25! I have to say that generally the tuna salad is fresh (I've had it a least five times) although the last time I had it, it didn't seem as fresh, with a more distinct fishy taste/smell. The staff is friendly and they do their best to make sure you get your order taken quickly. read more

I'm a bit torn on this place still, because I had two brownies here and I had an interesting experiences with both. My fellow Crawlers and I got a plain brownie and a brownie with walnuts. The plain brownie was rounded and delicately wrapped in beautiful paper, like a classy cupcake. The nut brownie came out just as if it was cut from the pan. The plain brownie was cakey yet a bit dry, I found. I am not a fan of nut brownies, but this one was moist, the nuts were soft, and I was pleasantly surprised to find large chunks of chocolate in my brownie. I wasn't expecting that! I wouldn't go back for a plain brownie, but I would like to go back for a nut one, indeed! Also, a Crawler tried their coffee. She had a pained look on her face which turned to sadness as she declared her coffee to be utterly undrinkable. Though I can not speak for myself, as I did not consume the coffee, her face did not lie. I can only hope it was her cup and that the coffee there isn't bad in general... read more

Went here earlier today for lunch. Great service, cute place, great variety, and good food. I got a sandwich which I can't remember exactly what it's name is but I do remember what is was made of. It was a tomato, basil, mozzarella, on olive bread. Very good but very cold! I wish they warmed it up for me considering it was sitting in a display. I also had a piece of Rosemary bread which was out and was also very cold. Really a downer. Got an apple juice from them as well which I think they personally made or bought fresh and it was delicious! Good prices on food and good variety. Just wish they warmed up my food. If you're looking for a cupcake, sure it's possible they might have good options. But their actual bread options - at Amy's Bread - fall far short of the hype. Having tried here the croissant, and later the baguette and sandwiches, it's only alright. You can find breads of this quality all over the city, and for far cheaper (and a shorter wait). Was on the hunt for a classic chocolate croissant the other day but got so hungry I "settled" on one of Amy's Bread's almond chocolate croissants. It wasn't even close to a chocolate croissant, but it was delicious and relatively fairly priced (less than $5) for a very filling lunch. The croissant itself was denser than I'm used to, and had an almost custardy almond filling. It was more chewy than flaky, which I was surprised by but really enjoyed. There wasn't much chocolate in it, and by the end it started to taste a bit too sweet, but I enjoyed it overall. It was a great pit stop on my hunt for the perfect chocolate croissant :) read more

The most ridiculous, poorly thought out, time wasting ordering system possible. Even if you only want a tea or a pre-made item that's sitting right there on the counter, you have to line up with the people getting sandwiches and toasted bagels. Half the staff is nice, the other half is so up their own a** and rude, I wanted to remind them they weren't solving cancer. Just grabbing me a muffin. Visited Amy's bread after brunch today. It was my first time in the Chelsea's market so it was riveting to see the amount of stores and eatery choices. Note to self to explore the market on an empty stomach next time to actually endings in one of the food spots lol. My girlfriends and I decided on Amy's bread for a slice as a treat. I had gone to the other Amy's bread in Hells Kitchen but they were out of the almond brioche french toast so of course I had to try it here! Overall, sweet and soft, but I wasn't amazed. The crust was too hard and bland such that only really the center was worth the calories to eat. read more

Always wanted to try this place as we frequent Chelsea Wine Vault for their tastings. Finally went there for some post-Valentine's Day desserts. We got a chocolate ganache tart and a red velvet cake. Red velvet cake was very good, but not quite the best. My husband was rather disappointed with his tart. So I don't think anything is made to order here, except maybe the pizzas? In terms of sandwiches though, you gotta look at what is in the display case and if the one you want has mustard on it and you hate mustard, tough luck. But, I guess the point of this place is that they make delicious bread. And they do have a wide range of sandwiches premade (some with and some without mustard among other ingredients) so you're bound to find something you'd like to eat. All the ingredients are listed on the cards and they offer to toast your sandwich for you (do this, obviously). The people working here all seemed very friendly, especially during the weekday lunch crunch. Seating is limited to a few bar stools, but I imagine they get more grab'n'go customers. I opted for a grilled cheese with cheddar, tomatoes, red onions, and cilantro. I can't believe I'd never thought to add cilantro to a grilled cheese before! Well, it certainly was delicious. Even though I burned my fingers eating it fresh out of the panini press, the cheese was gooey and scrumptious, and all the other ingredients were fresh and a good balance. I was pleased, even if I didn't have complete control over crafting my own sandwich. This is a review for their red velvet cupcakes. Which, as you can tell by the two stars, were meh. I don't think you should get cupcakes here. The red velvet flavor was...lacking and the frosting was also not that great. Though, I will say that their service was pretty nice. When I asked the cashier for a cup of water she even asked if I wanted ice. But, for that alone I cannot bump the review up to three. Maybe one day I'll get some bread and re-evaluate. read more

It's a Saturday. It's Chelsea Market. And the Bleecker Street location has just recently closed. Yet, this is the second Saturday in a row that the service at Amy's has been absolutely horrible. 1.5 people working (1/2 person because that person only seems to be working 1/2 speed). No one helps you as you wait for 5...10...15... minutes. They have a weird Ecuadorian sandwich stand staffed with two people, who also apparently cannot help you if you are not ordering weird Ecuadorian sandwiches (which no one seems to be ordering). Everything looks so great at this Chelsea Market branch, especially the floor-to-ceiling windows letting passers-by in on the "backstage" area of the shop. My friend and I were a bit indecisive, but finally settled on a white bean puree sandwich and a hummus sandwich. The former, which I had ordered, was pretty good, though I didn't like the addition of the tomatoes to the beans, avocado, and piece of lettuce enclosed within the whole grain bread. Furthermore, the sandwich was kept in a refrigerated case, so it took a bit for the flavors to truly shine through. When they finally did, I was rather happy. While the hummus sandwich was good, what with its healthy carrots and sprouts, the taste of the hummus itself was missing. In many ways, the sandwich was a solid version of a refreshing drink; it was cool and light but without much to stimulate the tastebuds. Ginger molasses cookies were well-received by my ginger-loving friend, and we were both huge fans of the cornmeal lime cookie; large and slightly chewy, you'll find yourself gobbling it down and delightfully plunging your tongue into your molars to get the last of the grainy bits out. I would definitely return, and to this location especially since all of the breads are made right next door. Prices are pretty good too, for the city, and you have the freedom to sit at one of the tables or wander around outside in the market. read more
