I think I'm in love! First of all, Chelsea Market is FABULOUS! What a great location for Amy's ... although a shop here in Long Beach, CA would be better for me personally. We had the Red Velvet Cake and the Black & White Cake and OMG they were both devine! The thing that made the RV Cake reach heights far beyond awesomeness was the NON cream cheese frosting. As a lactose intolerant person, RV Cake is always off limits for me - unless I score a vegan version. But, Amy's buttercream frosting was superb and light as air! The B & W Cake was also pretty delicious - a totally different icing and equally wonderful. The crew went above and beyond. When I told them I was curious about the ingredients and that I was trying to avoid cream and cream cheese due to LI, they were totally on it. They pulled out the ingredient listings and read whatever I asked. SUPER SUPER helpful and friendly. I'm mildly obsessed with Amy's chocolate cupcake. It might be the best chocolate cupcake I've had - and I had a lot of them. The cake-to-frosting ration is perfect, the cake is moist, the frosting is not too sweet. Delicious. I'd give them five stars for that cupcake alone, but I also tried the red velvet, and it wasn't that great. The cake was moist, and the frosting-to-cake ratio was again perfect, but...it's not cream cheese frosting! WTF? It's a marshmallow frosting. Disappointing. The monkey cake does have cream cheese frosting, and is very good, although not as transcendent as the chocolate cupcake. read more

I came here for a quick breakfast, and we ordered: banana & pecan scone cinnamon knot crossaint I think my favorite was the scone... the crossaint was okay too, esp. because I don't like crossaints that are too buttery & fatty. The cinnamon knot we could've done without it... kind of tasteless. We actually ordered coffee too and they put in the cream & sugar for us (they claimed that when they used to leave the cream/milk/sugar out on the counter, people abused it?), and it was waaaay too sweet. The smell walking in made me knee weak and whimper. This place is amazing! I purchased a wide array of baked wonders, a chicken salad on Marble sandwich, and a very good cup of coffee. By chance, I passed by while I was in Chelsea market. I got on line and ordered the almond brioche french toast. Obviously I ordered it based soley on looks. It looked so good and perfect on display, I just had to get one. Since i was already on line, i decided to get the scone too. The scone was calling for me, it was probably jealous that I was ordering the almond brocihe french toast. I forgot what it was called so i can't tell you which one I got. When I got home alter that night, I ripped a piece of the almond brioche french toast, place it in my mouth and was an instant fan. It was soft and toasty at the same time (don't know if that made any sense). The top was soaked in almond flavoring and had almonds all over it. It was GREAT!!!! I want more!!!! i'm usually not a huge fan of scones cause they are noramlly friggin hard BUT not this one. Located in Chelsea Market, amongst all of the other great stores there. If only we weren't in a rush and could have stopped by and tried all of the other gourmet shops! A much bigger location here with more tables and not as crowded. The selection of bread looks bigger, maybe just because there's more room. Black Sesame Twist - Good flavor, but not spectacular Almond Brioche - quite tasty and almost a little too buttery, but great textures Ham and Swiss sandwich - comes with some mayo and mustard, pretty good sandwich Turkey and basil sandwich - great portion of turkey and the basil just added some amazing flavors Probably the best bread store I've had the opportunity to try so far, and I can't wait to come back again. read more

I'd give 3.5 stars if I could. This review is only for the cakes... Devil's Food - Really delicious frosting, silky just like they say. The cake itself is very chocolatey so you definitely need a glass of milk with this. Monkey Cake - the cake was pretty good, banana-y (which I love) but not a fan of the frosting. It's not really sweet at all, in fact it tastes just like cream cheese. So I ate the cake part alone. Other places in the city make better banana cake than this. (GETE, Billy's) I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 3 because in the past I've tried the yellow cake with mocha frosting, and with pink frosting, and liked them a lot (though the pink frosting was much too sweet). One thing Amy's consistently gets right is the moistness of the cake, while many bakeries tend to make them really dry. I really need to eat other things from this place besides cakes. As a long time resident of Manhattan (27 years) I have to say that Amy's double seeded wheat is my favorite bread in the entire borough. I just love seeds and no one goes all the way with it like Amy's!** I also appreciate that this particular location slices. Some of the breads I love are rustic Italian and french baguette. Their regular sandwich rolls are as good as brioche rolls. All of their sandwiches are fresh and good to grab. The service may be slow at times, but when you start getting help, everything is quick. All the staffs are friendly, especially Chris. I discovered Amy's Bread a half a dozen years ago when living in NYC. I returned this weekend and made a beeline there. These products are divine. The cake with pink frosting makes any problem dissolve. The semolina bread with fennel and raisins is so unique and savory. I was helped by a lovely associate who offered to gift wrap a commemorative apron I was purchasing for my daughter, also an A's Bread devotée, who loves the Amy's Bread book I had given her previously. Quality varies by what you order. I've eaten at Amy's every day in the past four days, so here's what I do and do not recommend. Good: * Pumpernickel, sunflower seed, and currant twist * Chocolate sourdough twist * Seminola golden raisin and fennel twist - ++ on this, it's a bit unusual and well-done * Black olive roll * Sticky bun * Kitchen sink cookie * Double chocolate pecan cookie * Oat scone Not-so-good: * Parmesan twist - this was dry, with little parmesan flavor. * Prosciutto and black pepper twist - seemed exotic, like an experiment, and unfortunately tasted like one. I have eaten something from Amy's Bread almost every day for the past 4 or 5 years. Three of those years I worked there. So at this point I probably have eaten every product they sell at least a half-dozen times. It would be impossible for me to pick a single favorite thing as everything is pretty solidly great but I do think there are a few things that stand out. In the bread department, Semolina Raisin Fennel definitely. It's Amy's signature and for good reason. At once savory and sweet, it's almost a meal in itself. The Country White Boule is my favorite white. It crusty like the baguette and also light and soft on the inside but it has a different kind of yeastiness to it. To make a comparison to wine, it's flavor is like a more full-bodied version of the baguette if that makes any sense. For wheats, the Double-Seeded Wheat Baguette is great. There's salt in that mix of seeds embedded in the top crust which is so delicious and the interior is really moist and chewy. And while the Miche is absolutely unwieldy in size, it's an amazing tasting loaf - a whole wheat rye sourdough that is incredibly dense, chewy, and tangy. It also stays fresh longer than any other loaf due to it's density so don't let the size scare you away. For pastry, do yourself a favor and buy a slice of cake. The Yellow Cake with Pink Icing is quite simply what god intended birthday cake to taste like. The Black and White Cake is my pick of the chocolate cakes since the vanilla frosting balances out the intense chocolaty-ness of the cake on the inside. If you dare to go chocolaty-er, Devil's Food Cake then but maybe get a glass of milk to help you out. The Lemon Mousseline Cake is an awesome alternative to your standard chocolate or vanilla with a bright lemon flavor and a slightly denser crumb. Really refreshing. Other pastries: Whole Wheat Irish Soda Bread is my favorite breakfast item. It has both raisins and caraway seeds, is thick and crumbly, very slightly sweet, goes great with a cup of tea. The Cheese Biscuits are crazy addictive. I like mine toasted and drizzled with honey. The Ginger Snaps are the best cookies, super crisp and spicy. They make phenomenal pie crust too if you're fortunate enough to snag a couple dozen before they sell out. If you're eyeing the Brownies get the Double Chocolate Pecan Cookie instead. It's chocolatey-er and fudgey-er. Sandwiches: Grilled Cheese! It's cheddar with a spicy chipotle tomato spread, cilantro, red onions, and slices of tomato on sourdough. It's almost too amazing. The other sandwiches are also good but none come close to how good the Grilled Cheese is. So long ass review (did anyone make it to the end?) but hopefully somewhat helpful! read more

(Upon later questioning, he said the bread was perfectly buttered and perfectly toasted. The cheese was ozzing out to the sides of the square toasts, and the cilantro and carmelized red onions were accents, punches of flavor. His thoughts, my words.) The people behind the counter either ignore you or act like you're annoying them by asking for a croissant. No one smiles or says hello. Today I walked in and stood by the bread counter and no one approached me. I'm short so I figured maybe they didn't see me so I walked up to the counter where two people from the staff were talking. I stood there for a good couple of mins while they chatted and totally ignored me. Not even an acknowledgement or something like oh I'll be with you in a minute. I award stars on here based on the establishment category and where a restaurant/business falls amongst it's peers....sort of a "best in class" type system. So if we are talking about American bakery specialists, this is as good as it gets. I'm not saying every single item is drool-worthy but there are two items here that are over the top delicious, so 5 stars is merited, in comparison to other places offering similar items. Let's start with the fact that if you're a local, going into Chelsea Market makes you want to stick a fork in your eye just to see if all the annoying tourists will get out of your face (I mean, it takes like 20 minutes to get to Amy's from the front door during lunch hour -- UGH) --- I say that to say that it's a sacrifice I happily make just to get the BEST TUNAMELT ON EARTH when I'm craving it. This is not a waistline-friendly sandwich (mayo, gobs of melted Cheddar PLUS a buttery brioche) but it's WORTH it. Seriously, the best tunamelt I've ever had. I've dreamt about it. I've cried when they were sold out b/c I got there after lunch. 2nd item not be missed -- the orange butter cookie. I've eaten a LOT of cookies in a LOT of places and believe me this is one of the best cookies on the planet. So much so that when I recently had 15 relatives in town from Colombia who were in NYC for just 4 days to attend my wedding, I sheparded the entire group thru Chelsea Market after walking the High Line just so they could eat this orange cookie. What an amazing sticky bun they have. It was sweet but not too sweet. It was so soft and gooey. I wished it was warmed up somehow. I tried a few of their bread twists too and they were great. It had a nice crust and a really soft center, perfect for soups. My favorite was the rosemary twist. I went to see their selection and they got a great selection of sour dough and baked goods. Cakes, cookies, brownies, red velvet, monkey cake were all in front of me but I used my slow breathing technique and kept my focus and got only some dark bread with walnut & raisins. I stopped in here for a quick sweet snack and had the coconut dream bar ($3.75). It was very coconut-y and delicious, but I thought it was a little pricey for the size. Believe the hype, simplify awesome bread. They are known for the amazing sticky buns, and there are really amazing. Great sweet glaze without being overly so and well balanced with the dough and nuts. The scones were good and avoided being dry like so many scones.
