There's a lot to hate about this obnoxiously-expensive cafe inside of the Dover Street Market with an ominous security presence and a strange aluminum paneling inside, reminiscent of the homes of La Boca. But what I cannot hate is the quality of everything I have tried here. The bread and cultured butter is everything I want in an afternoon snack. The quiche is phenomenally delicate. Well, one thing is for sure - I am definitely not hip enough for the Dover Street Market. But I can do quiche, and Rose Bakery sells the best damn quiche I have ever eaten! Flaky pastry, a creamy, custardy center, smoky lardons and swiss chard - this quiche puts all those sad, soggy quiches to shame. The cappuccino was rich, and the pear cake dense and fudge-y. Rose Bakery, I am a fan! Probably won't be back in the 'hood any time soon, but if I was, I'd brave all the too cool for school kids lining up for Supreme for some more of these treats. read more

Dover Street Market is across the street from me, and while I can not afford the clothes, I can just afford the coffee. The coffee is good, very strong, like something the dock-workers in Bayonne drink at 4am while unloading ships. But served with sweet little lumps of sugar only, so it's BYOS (Bring Your Own Splenda). Four dollars for a small cup. Today I had the potato and leek soup, with was a generous portion and thankfully served with a good portion of bread and your own pepper mill and salt on the side. It was more of a clear buttery soup with leeks and fingerling potatoes in it, it was good, but I prefer a denser soup. Eight dollars. To actually have a real meal here equals Trust Fund Baby! The waitress was very passive/aggressive - which I like, she was not very nice and it was enjoyable in an odd way, she wasn't overtly mean, just remote and above all. The Rose Bakery is a very small space, which is fine, but what no one else has mentioned is that seating is very public school cafeteria, there are four tables that seat eight each, and that's it. Horrible service - in fact, non-existent. Been to DSM many times to shop but thought to check out the bakery. Was confused on how service worked so asked the woman at the door "Do I just sit anywhere for the cafe?" She said yes. I assumed it was waited service since I saw other people being served so I took a seat. Waited 10min and no one said anything or greeted me. Meanwhile the waiter was tending to other people who already had their food and asking them if their food is ok. I'm sitting there wondering how these people are being served and not me. Such poor and confusing service. Not even a greeting. I witnessed a woman who came in looking to order as well and then eventually just left after also being ignored. I really liked their authentic scone with butter and jam.Some people might say it's tiny but to me it was right size. (it's pretty pricy though compare to other cafes). The service is not smooth or excellent but the fact that they have nice blight space and that covers the part. and it was to me all part of whole Dover Street Market experience. When we arrived, there was only a group of customers and more than half seats and tables were open, we could pleasantly enjoy relaxing there and warm up our body before going upstairs exploring all luxury fashion brands. Noticed other customers both who was there before us and came later were speaking in french and they all seemed happy and enjoying their company with what they ordered as well, that must proof something good. read more

It has an industrial feel because of the exposed stainless steel kitchen and cafeteria-like tables and chairs. I went on a Saturday morning for brunch, and it was very easy to get a table. It seems to get more filled in the afternoon from the over-fashionable shopping crowds. We started with drip coffee ($4.50) and a minimalist fruit salad, which was a bowl of thin granny smith apple slices and small mango chunks sprinkled with toasted coconut shreds ($8). We also ordered the lemon zest scone with clotted cream and jam ($5), which was the highlight of my meal. The single scone was the perfect balance of dense buttery-ness and airy floury-ness. Though I'm pretty sure it was just served with butter instead of clotted cream, the wild blueberry jam made up for it. My mom ordered the granola with plain homemade yogurt ($11), which was a small 3-4oz yogurt with an disproportionally large bowl of granola. The granola was an addictive crumble of oats, almonds, and dried apriocts and cranberries laced with a guilty amount of honey. I had the breakfast sandwich, which was a sad excuse for a flavorless flaccid sausage messily stacked with an egg, avocado mush, and tomato jam on an over-sized overly buttery brioche bun ($17). DO NOT get the breakfast sandwich. You will finish your meal dissatisfied and wondering why you allocated so much of your daily caloric needs on that mess and sad excuse for a breakfast sandwich. Despite the generally overpriced everything at Rose Bakery and the unacceptable breakfast sandwich, I actually went back later that afternoon for tea time. I had a ginger lemon tea, which was a big pot of water with a few slices of lemon and a lump of ginger, with a slice of their fruit cake ($13 with tea). My uncle tried their walnut cake, which was a nutty loaf that was served with a single whole walnut. The cakes should actually be renamed to loafs, but they were not bad. They were baked on premises, properly moist, and generally boring. The best part was the small buttery sugar sprinkled chocolate cookie that came with my hot drink. I would stop by again after 4pm for tea time, but only because I live half a block away. If you're dropping g's at Dover Street Market, Rose Bakery is the obvious choice for a coffee or tea break. Otherwise, definitely stop by for a scone or some granola to do some serious people watching. The characters that flow through are definitely worth the time, and it's undoubtedly a cool place to meet someone for coffee. read more

I like this place a lot. It's not nearly as good as the Paris locations, but it's in a good location, it's a beautiful space and the food is great. Yes it's vegetarian and it's expensive but it's delicious and nice and light, but still leaves me happy and more or less full. Pretty good coffee and good pastries. Awesomeness!! Took my awesome coworker on a birthday outing here after being introduced to their food since they catered a work event. The place is located in a marketplace in what looks like a former community center. The food is inspired by fresh and farm supplied fruits and veggies. My coworker and I both had the quiche with salad and the birthday girl had a eggplant and ricotta sandwich. The service was awesome and I say this because our waiter was full of it! He applauded our selections with " awesome!!!" and "yeahhhs" beyond our wildest dreams. Where have you ever seen someone do this? There is an open kitchen concept so I can see all the goodies being made and they also offer a great selection of fresh juices and pastry. I told them I was upset they opened at 11 because this would easily be my spot for a grab and go breakfast before work. Had a super late lunch here and met up with a friend. I was shocked at how crowded it was. Esp since it's in somewhat of a no man's land. They had last call so I only had soup and tea, but would've wanted to try something sweet. Whatever was left in the case did not look appealing. Best bakery in the city. Their cakes and desserts are some of the best I ever had. The price could scare the average customer away but once you taste the food you'll understand why it cost the price it does. They also have lunch food which never misses. I had the soup and it was fantastic and I'm not a soup guy. It was served with home made sourdough which made it even better. Came here twice in one afternoon (before and after shopping at DSM). Both the drink/food and ambience were lacking. I tried the tea during my first visit. I forget what it was called, but it was the "smoky" one, and it was very nice. The aroma and flavor was woodsy and hearty, and it came with buttery little cookie. The service was pretty slow and uncoordinated. It took a really long time (15-20 min) for my friend to get her regular coffee, and it wasn't that crowded. After shopping, we ordered some more drinks and snacks. I had the latte which was good, but also took kind of long to get. The quiche (I think) was pretty good, but the cookie was hard and a little stale. Also, the lighting is terrible at the bakery -- it's that awful overhead kind that feels more like an old hospital interior. I loved the Rose Bakery in Paris, so I had to try the New York offshoot. First, the location is a bit weird. Midtown East/Murray Hill is a pretty strange place for both Dover Street Market and Rose Bakery. Also, the eating area is very weirdly situated on the first floor of the store... it looks like it was just kind of crammed in there. The tables are cafeteria-style, which is great for groups (we were six people) but not super intimate. In any case, the food, coffee and pastries are all fantastic. However, they are expensive and they come in pretty small portions. The scone was about the size of a golf ball and came with like... a thimble of butter and jam. My group ordered the smoked salmon with soft scrambled eggs (amazing), assiette de legumes (amazing) and grilled cheddar and prosciutto sandwich (not great.. stick with the brunch-y French stuff). In any case, really good food but very expensive and weird location. read more

Sorry. I just went here. I got a piece of bread called "spiced honey cake" to go. It was $6.53 (no prices posted anywhere inside). I do not mind, and regularly do, pay exorbitant prices for sweet carbohydrates in this city, but that's just too much money for a very meager slice of "cake" that is really a sweet bread. I would have actually told the guy I didn't want it, but he had already handed it to me in the paper when he told me the price. Also, it just isn't that good. Too much clove and allspice I think. Sure, this isn't at the level of the original Rose Bakeries in Paris, but it's still quite good and easily the best brunch in Murray Hill. I'm always surprised to see the crazy lines at barely mediocre Penelope across the street when Rose Bakery is far superior and rarely crowded. The egg sandwich is one of my favorite breakfasts in Manhattan - the avocado mash and beautiful side salad take it to the next level. And the pancakes are fantastic if you're in the mood for something sweet--fluffy, buttery, rich, delightful. I've had several of the brunch menu items and have never been dissatisfied. I've walked by the entrance to Dover Street Market plenty in my years in the neighborhood, but I only recently became aware that there were shops (and a bakery) inside what looks like a stately old building that probably housed a bank some years ago. The bakery itself is just a row of 4 tables to the right for seating, with a kitchen behind the pastries on display. Getting seated right at opening wasn't an issue (we were the first ones to plop ourselves down), but by the time we left an hour later, there weren't too many seats left. While you get set up quickly, and the food gets brought out relatively quickly, the waiters tend not to really bother with checking on your water (unless you ask them), which was a bit disappointing. Given that the brunch prices here are pretty pricey, I would have expected a bit better. As for the food - pretty solid overall. We started with a plain scone, which was good and would have been better if there was clotted cream (they didn't have any on hand - a bit odd, as I feel like they advertise themselves as a place to have tea, and scones are usually served with cream, not butter). I went with the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, which was a delicious combo - the salmon definitely was of higher-quality than the typical lox that gets thrown on your bagel at a local deli, and I really like how the 'soft' scrambled eggs (which seemed to be a bit runnier than your typical batch of scrambled eggs) were executed. Definitely my favorite dish out of the breakfast plates. We also had the breakfast sandwich, which, while good, may have suffered from being a bit on the thick side and having a lot of filling. I don't distinctly remember the cheddar that was supposed to be in the sandwich, and I think plainer brioche (the kind used here had sesame on it, or something similar) detracted away from the flavor. As someone else also noted, the sausage in the sandwich is pretty generic - something like chorizo or maybe a spiced lamb sausage would work really well with the avocado, which already gives the dish a slight Mexican bent. We finished off with the toffee pudding, which was really good. I'm not a person who seeks out toffee, but the caramelized toffee really works nicely on top of the pudding (which, to be honest, was more like a mini-cake - maybe the waitress just said pudding randomly). The cream that was served with it (thanks again to the servers, for not mentioning what it was) really paired well with it. In all - it's a nice little spot inside what a boutique market, but the food is a bit uneven, the service is less than impressive, and what really would prevent me from coming here that frequently are the prices. A smaller-than-average scone for $5? Fresh-squeezed glass of OJ for $8? And if you wanted a simple bacon and eggs, that goes for $16...maybe the upkeep of the place is expensive, but I wouldn't come here unless there was something I really wanted to have (like the salmon with scrambled eggs). There's definitely bites worth coming back for, and the pastries looked delectable, but there's a reason that there's a constant line for brunch at Penelope's across the street and not here. read more

The last three times I've been at The Rose the service has been dismal. Surly wait staff who clearly don't want to be there. I miss the place in Paris and am so glad they finally opened one here. I am disappointed their famous banana smoothie is not included on the NY menu. I am sad to report that even though everything here tastes delicious (especially the occasional pancakes)... my wallet feels like it has been raped. There's NO excuse for the outrageous prices. Appealing shamelessly to the 1% by excluding everyone else with $5 coffee and $20 quiche is beyond cynical. Not to bost, I've been to the others in London and Tokyo & I was so looking forward to one in my home town NYC. I went to the shop durring the first week, a nice shopping experiance, thought it was a good sign the bakery was full. I knew I'd be back soon as I had my eye on a jacket.... A couple of weeks later I went back to visit the jacket and have tea at the bakery. I decided on a diffrent style of the same jacket at Barneys. Then to the bakery.... I sat myself at one of the large tables, there were 3 other parties all well into their meals. I sat & sat long enough to think twice about leaving. When a young man came to inform me lunch was over and it was tea time. Great I said that's what I'm here for. He then got my set up. A peice if butcher paper & a menu. Well there's 20 min. of my life. 10 min. later he isles if I was ready to order. I had a couple of questions..... I could see the crumble was a dark filling so I asked. I was told apple, hmmmm, guess I skip that, this I thought is going to be interesting. Ok I'll have the cream scone. Cream being clotted cream..... So another 10 min. Goes by and I get my pot if tea, no condiments, luckally I drink it black and unsweetened. Also I noticed a ripped peice of paper between my pot of tea and the saucer, hmmm ( again). It was a ripped peice of the menu um, ok out of napkins?! Another 10 min and I get a warm hockey puck with flecks of blue. Hmmmmm....no clotted cream, a translation problem? So I put butter and marmalade on a hunk ok scone UGH! What is this? Let try it without the marmalade UGH! Let's try just the scone, is it the butter collecting flavor from the fridge?! UGH! No one has asked me how everything is, by now 2/4 of the scone is gone and im trying to get rid of this taste with my tea and it's not happenning. Now I sit and wait with my wallett in the table for who knows how long. By now there is only one other person having cake & myself. I'm kind of bent now and he comes and puts down my bill, and starts to walk away. I asked well don't you want to know how everything was?! Oh um how was it? Walked in and was completely ignored. No host or concierge, just a stack of t-shirts by the door, and an odd hut-like structure with a man inside. Turned around for a couple of minutes, trying to figure out what to do. Finally, I asked a customer if he was in line. He said to see the guy behind a counter, which was squashed in the corner of the room. I squeezed past some dining tables, into the corner, and asked the guy "How does this work?" He said, "For what?" I told him "takeout," he shoved a menu in my face, and said he would be back. He finally took my order and told me to go back and stand near the door. He was not friendly at all, and was giving me attitude. While waiting by the door, I noticed two other customers came in, and--miraculously--they were not ignored. Instead, they were paid attention to right away, and directed towards available tables. Guess I'm not sufficiently white, rich, tall, or fashionable enough to be worth their time.
