I stopped in at Phil's Icehouse for a burger. While waiting, I decided to get some ice-cream for dessert. The place was empty, but quite a few customers outside. I ordered the cookies and cream pint, paid $9.50 which wasn't too bad. I have to be honest..., I was not impressed whatsoever with Amy's I've Cream. It was delicious, but the only vegan flavor of ice cream you have is Mexican vanilla. For a health-conscious city like Austin, why aren't there more vegan options? A girl can't go wrong with an ice cream such as this as it's a drank and desert- score. The Kahlúa ice-cream tasted just as the named implied which was great for a late night treat after a heavy dinner. I also picked up a fun TX sized cookie with an Austin twist. I was really hoping to like Amy's from everything I had heard, but I was actually disappointed! I should probably note that I LOVE ice cream. I'd eat it all day everyday if I were guaranteed good health. Anyway, my point being is I'm always looking for a new ice cream shop. This location is in the Arboretum which is a really fun shopping center in North Austin. There was plenty of parking and Amy's wasn't crowded when I arrived. The ice cream itself is expensive... I ordered a small Oreo cup ($4.95) with Oreo toppings (+$1.00). I'm definitely not used to spending nearly $6 on ice cream, especially in such a small serving. The ice cream itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't any better than other shops I've tried. My favorite part of the experience actually wasn't Amy's, but rather the outdoor environment. Right outside the ice cream shop are plenty of seats, string lights, and a trail leading to an overlook. There were many couples walking around (clearly a perfect date spot!) and a few students studying. Would I return? Ehhh maybe. If I were at the Arboretum, I might stop into Amy's and grab a scoop. I've been coming to various Amy's locations since I was twelve, and it's always a good time. This time, I took my twelve year old for their first time and they really enjoyed it. The energy was a little awkward upon first arrival and like any older ice cream shop, it smelled of old ice cream and sugar. But it was an otherwise clean establishment. We were greeted promptly and my child made their order. Strawberry with m&m's mixed in. Weird, but whatever. They're twelve. One of the staff started making recommendations and came to something with coconut, which falls under the tree nut family. I said "Oh that sounds great, I'm just allergic to tree nuts." The person looked confused and said "It's coconut." I nodded and replied, "Yes, still falls under the category of tree nuts." That's a little concerning that allergens aren't educated on. But I don't blame the person. I made my order, and I watched that same staff member sanitize their tools before making my ice cream. We paid, and ended up sitting inside and laughing together for a while, watching the kids outside tumble over each other for the play sets. read more

Wow, what can I say? This Amy's location (13265 N. 183) on the evening (3/10/24) we were there smelled awful. Seriously, we walked in from the Phil's Ice House next door to celebrate a special birthday, the odor was putrid. We all looked around expecting to find vomit on the floor someplace close by. We thought the smell might be coming from the nearby trashcan, and took shallow breathes as we waited in line. As the line moved closer to the ordering area, we did not seem to notice the smell as much. We thought, the smell had to be in the back of the store. So, we stayed through waiting in line behind about 15 others and placing our orders for 6 individuals. None of us could believe the associates could stand working in that smell for hours on end. We chose to sit outside to eat outside. The ice cream was delicious, just as Amy's always is. Sadly, I stepped back in to get a lid for my ice cream, as I wanted to take the remainder to go. As I stood at the counter, trying to get someone's attention, I could not take the terrible smell. I'm guessing we just got accustomed to it while we were in line earlier. It was gross. Amy's Mexican Vanilla is fantastic. IMO, their Triple-Mexican Vanilla with Chocolate Chips is the next best thing to a controlled pharmaceutical substance. According to what I was told, this is an extra-concentrated Mexican Vanilla. It's pure delight. At this espresso-level of flavor density, the ice cream starts tasting a bit like a New Mexican biscochito - or, maybe a more cinnamony version of a snickerdoodle. This isn't my favorite ice cream outlet only due to its location (kinda hard to get to) and its surprising success - meaning that it's crowded and there's not much parking. When I was there most recently, the water dispenser was dry - and before the lone attendant could finish refilling it, a family of seven took up all their attention for 20 minutes. The proverbial ice cream after dinner routine. I used it after hanging out at Brooklyn Heights Pizza and we ended up here at Amy's ice cream nearby. What a thrill! This is a quaint ice cream parlor that I was enthralled by. Not only that they had ice cream, but they were open when I was craving for it badly. Yep, definitely a nice stop on my trip to Austin Tx on the first night of 6, I stopped here with a friend of mine and his wife. It was about 9pm and they were still open and I was thankful for that. The ambiance here was mellow and quiet. What did you expect for a ice cream parlor to be that late in the evening. The best part of the experience was the purchase of said ice cream. I basically went for the chocolate and it was good. Above average good. Hit the spot good, really. We spent about 30 minutes here eating our frozen treats before finishing up and headed home. The chairs were comfortable and it was nice to talk to friends while eating ice cream.
