    Omaskase
    Alex Z.

Tucked away inside the Japan Center Mall, An is quite literally a hidden gem led by a new head chef since October with experience from Kenzo, the famous Michelin starred Kaiseki restaurant in Napa. The omakase menu is a highlight, featuring the freshest fish I've had in SF. All the ingredients are flow in, ranging from the waters of Japan to the coasts of Spain. Each bite features fish that will slowly dissolve in your mouth. The Omakase menu features a range of local, and seasonal fishes, including classics such as toro, bluefin tuna, salmon to more eclectic offerings such as scallops, uni, and horse mackerel. Regardless of the fish, each dish is expertly made demonstrated a high degree of technical excellence. The flavors are all perfectly complimentary, with a balanced menu that takes you through a culinary journey. Having visited a few Japanese restaurants, I can confidently say An delivers an experience you would find in Japan - and it all starts with the extremely high quality ingredients sourced directly from overseas. Truly simple and special, a wonderful reminder to the exemplary Japanese cuisine that's available in the Bay Area.

At An in Japantown SF, it's clear this is not Edomae sushi--the white-vinegared rice shows that. As someone who favors Edomae and red vinegar rice (my great-grandmother was from Kyoto, but my taste leans Tokyo), I say this with high standards. Still, An earns respect: the fish shows careful aging, rare in San Francisco. The highlight was fugu nigiri with fugu liver--an extraordinary experience impossible in Asakusa, where liver is forbidden by law. From the Omakase Nigiri, I added the grilled black cod, A5 wagyu nigiri, and tamago (my benchmark dish). Each showed precision and skill. The chawanmushi with ikura was flawless. While my heart stays with Edomae, An stands as the defining Kansai-style sushi in San Francisco--rare, precise, and worth returning to.

We ordered extra uni nigiri because there is nothing else like it!

The chef is truly exceptional--his attention to detail and mastery of flavor pairing elevated every single bite. The way he paired each piece of fish with complementary flavors was nothing short of perfect. Every course felt intentional, balanced, and deeply thoughtful. The quality of the fish was outstanding--so soft, aged perfectly, and bursting with flavor. Honestly, it surpassed omakase that we've experienced at Michelin-starred restaurants, which is not something we say lightly. And the uni nigiri... hands down the best I've ever had. It was delicate, smooth, high-quality, sweet, rich, and absolutely melt-in-your-mouth. The flavors he combined were absolutely unparalleled. This was more than a meal--it was an experience. Can't wait to come back!

First time with friends. New ownership, high quality sushi. Tried $150 course, every dish has its characters and the servant is well trained, explained every ingredient in detail. Love their recommend sake selections, taste 5 varieties, you can taste different spice level, great experience. Reservation is a must. Walk-in is very limited, not recommend.

5 STARS An is a very intimate and authentic Japanese restaurant located inside of the Japantown Mall. There are only 8 seats at the bar and 3-4 other tables for 2 (max 4), so be sure to make a reservation weeks ahead! The Chef's omakase is the way to go here. It's an 8 course meal - it came with a few appetizer dishes ahead of the nigiri, including a few slices of sashimi, a chawanmushi, and miso marinated black cod, ahead of 7 amazing chef-choice cuts of nigiri. Check out the pictures to see how fresh each of these pieces of nigiri and sashimi are. It also came with a nice little strawberry and chocolate mochi dessert at the end. An is a hidden gem in SF where there are so many options. This one is very affordable and the chefs explained each dish perfectly. Would highly recommend An!

A spectacular omakase. The best I've had in the states for sure. A sleepy small lovely little restaurant. I will probably come back here every time I'm in the area.

My review is more of a 4.5 but I rounded it up because of the food quality. my bf and i had a reservation on 12/17 since this place only takes reservations. it's a small restaurant and we chose to sit at the bar for a more personal experience. our experience with the food was amazing but we felt it was not as interactive with the chef. he had his regulars dining in the same time as us and i understand he would be more comfortable with them. however, i still wouldve liked a more personal experience like he could have talked to us more instead of giving us basic service such as explaining the food and saying enjoy. overall, not a bad experience but could be improved.

Came here to celebrate a birthday, and it was an amazing experience. We booked two weeks in advance, and it felt like dining in someone's home in Tokyo--super intimate. The omakase was fantastic: fresh, beautifully prepared, and we left perfectly satisfied. The chef added a personal touch, chatting with us about the dishes and restaurant, making it even more special. For the quality, it's one of the best reasonably priced omakase spots in SF. Highly recommend!

    Happy and Satisfied customers.

Outrageous! We went on a date and they went over the top to make us feel so special. The salmon with dill garnish, the chawanmushi, the serving, the smells, everything about this place tells me it's going to be an instant favorite. Can't wait to to go back soon!

Loved almost all the dishes. Love the location in correlation to Japan Town. Staff and chefs were friendly and welcoming. The strawberry Mochi for dessert was so delicious.

We enjoyed our omakase experience at An, it reminded us of restaurants in Japan! We enjoyed all 8 courses of the omakase. It was well paced and well portioned. It was interesting to see the western twist to some of the courses. The miso black cod was delicious. Of the nigiris, the toro was our favorite it melted in our mouths. We liked how with each course they came to explain where the fish was sourced from, came with beautiful dishware, and you can tell it was all made with care. It was a nice intimate restaurant and they confirmed our reservations by text very quickly!

    Lillian S.

I would highly recommend. The food here is brilliant. The server tells you exactly how to eat the sushi. My favorites were the salmon and apples and the shrimp and ponzu jelly. The nigiri omakase is a 5 course meal for around $100 per person. They fly their fish from all over the world and you can surely taste the difference between this and other sushi places. Although you don't get "full" with this experience. Additionally the whole experience is about an hour long. We sat down at 7:30 and received our check at 8:30. So be on time. The space is very intimate, only 3 tables and a bar. So they do reservation only. It's not the best place for a big group. This is a great place for a business meal or a nice date. I would come back for sure.

    Kenneth A.

Great omakase restaurant at half the price of most sf spots. The restaurant is small and only seats around 20 people, giving the place a cozy vibe. All of the food was delicious and varied in the flavors and senses. I'm not a huge fan of most nigiri but this was exquisite. The fatty flavor and textures were unlike any other sushi shops I've ever been to. Even a basic bowl of miso soup gave me a deeper, heartier taste. Wonderful shop and will be coming back

I got a seasonal special donburi (Gouka Kani Donburi) as they shared they were adding new items to their menu. The crab on top of the rice was SO good and perfectly seasoned to go with the dish. All of the fresh sashimi was very thick, salmon was clean tasting and buttery. I have never tried the sweet shrimp but it may be my new favorite thing. We tried a bunch of different things and I'm glad that we did because the nigiri was not the best thing on the menu. I would come back here for the other things like the box set (otoro, wagyu, uni, ikura). The agedashi tofu was the best I've ever had. The teacup steamed egg was presented well but for the price nothing really that special. I suspect the price is high because of the caviar & ikura. It's not bad, but it takes a while, it's small and not anything that stood out like the agedashi tofu or the other items. The service was really good. They provided a small dessert for us because we were celebrating an event, that was a nice touch. Overall, id come back but maybe not for an omakase or just nigiri.

We walked into a refined but welcoming space where the sushi counter is the main focus, and the meal unfolds course by course in front of us. There is a sense of calm throughout the room, allowing the attention to stay on the chefs, the ingredients, and the details behind each dish without the distraction of a busy dining room. The omakase experience balances traditional sushi with more creative touches. Each course brings something different, from fresh sashimi and nigiri to warmer dishes like chawan mushi that add depth to the progression of the meal. The sushi highlights the quality of the fish while incorporating thoughtful flavor combinations, with dishes like scallop and the dry-aged fish courses standing out for their texture and seasoning. The sake pairing fits naturally into the experience, adding another layer without overpowering the food, and the sommelier's selections complement the progression of flavors across the meal. What makes Kusakabe memorable is the craftsmanship and pacing of the meal. The chefs take time to explain each course, making the experience feel personal rather than rushed. Sitting at the counter adds to the atmosphere because you get to see the precision and care that goes into every piece, from the way the rice is formed to the final brush of sauce on the fish. We got the omakase, which was massive and had 18 courses. They gave us a menu so we knew what to expect for each course, and we ordered some sake. The omakase was delicious and more traditional than other places, each course was so beautiful and delicately made.
