We were in Buffalo to visit friends so had to make a stop at the iconic Anchor Bar for Buffalo wings and a beef on weck! We split a plate w 5 wings, a sandwich and potato wedges. Holy cow that was a lot of food. We were certainly full and the meal was great. The bread was soft w caraway seeds, and the meat was tender and flavorful. The wings were in the buffalo dry rub w mild sauce - we had a plane to catch so nothing too spicy. The wings did have a lot of flavor, not hot but a bit warm. Forever this will be my top 3 favorite Wing place. Many people overlook this place or think they are overrated. No way. The nostalgic, the OG of wing places. The flavor is always a hit, super crispy and the blue cheese is a notch up of any other blue cheese. They only offer about 8 flavors to choose from which is great. They don't saturate and overwhelm people with too many choices. The atmosphere is great. Historical Buffalo greats all over the walls. Just imagine the stories told. I have been here a handful of times. And the last few have been meh. I was pleasantly surprised by this visit. Came here on the way to Niagara-on-the-Lake. It's always a fun atmosphere. Lots of Bills and Sabres paraphernalia around. It's kind of a dive bar. Which is good. Prices have increased like everything else. So be ready to spend for a family. Now for the wings. They were good. Last time we came we weee highly disappointed but today they hit a solid triple. They were good and saucey, lots of celery and some blue cheese. I went here on a drive through the area a few days ago, and it was pretty good. I was expecting there to be a long wait, but in fact, the place was nearly empty. It looks like it's been a very cute tourist destination over the decades but a little bit rundown now. While the place was opened in the 1930s, it wasn't until the 1960s that the buffalo wing was invented here. And they are pretty good. We got them as a side item alongside additional entrées. The service was good. Even the bar was pretty quiet, but a nice bartender offered to take our photograph with the Statue of Liberty since we were being tourists. This place is all right. They have a wide variety of other food in addition to wings. If you want a sandwich, burger, pasta, you can find it here for sure. There is construction going on outside and it seems like a windy way that you need to drive in order to get there, but the directions are correct and you will get there. read more

No visit to Buffalo would be compete without a visit to Anchor Bar, the inventors of the beloved buffalo wings. I went there for lunch, sat that bar, and my girlfriend and I shared the wings, with mild sauce, and a sausage pizza (it was national sausage pizza day). The wings came with a blue cheese dressing on the side. They were delicious. Just the right amount of sauce covering juicy wings. The only downside was that on an occasional bite the skin on the wings was overcooked and a bit hard. But most bites were buffalo wing perfection, just as I expected! The pizza was good as well. Not the most flavorful sausages, but there were plenty of them and the crust was good. I ended up eating more pizza than I expected. The bartender was friendly and served me a well made American mule. Not the biggest fan of the decor, which had way too much going on. You will have to check out the pictures to see what I mean. But the bottom line is that you get the original buffalo wings here and they have withstood the test of time and remain top tier wings. I am so happy I finally made the pilgrimage to the birthplace of wings. I am, also, at a loss on how to position this review. I was CERTAIN I would feel one of two ways: 1) I loved it. Bartender was fantastic. *The look, the feel, the smells, the excitement from all who arrive (there was a line waiting for the door to be unlocked at 11am and the Bills weren't even playing). *I even managed to keep my emotions in check and not hit the merch section The "ehh:" *I wish I ordered my wings extra crispy and with extra EXTRA blue cheese. Extra blue cheese equals 2, 2oz soufflé cups *The blue cheese itself was ok. Not to the standard or the wing. *I ordered a beef on weck as well. Bun was amazing. Horseradish was perfectly hot. And want to bring my kids. We live in CT. Oldest plays football in Rochester. Is it worth the 1:30 to get there from his campus? Yes. Worth the drive from CT? Nope. I'll say that I've had better wings, and it all felt a bit rushed, getting tourists in and out. The wings were fine and customizable, but id call it standard, good buffalo sauce. After leaving Niagara Falls, we decided to drive through Buffalo on our way home just so we could make a stop at the Original home of the buffalo chicken wing. We were pleasantly surprised that they had a large (free) parking lot on site, as on street parking was scarce in this part of the city. We walked in and were seated almost immediately. In addition to the bar area, they have 3 rooms for seating, plus a small gift shop, and restrooms directly across from the main bar area. We ordered a few local favorites from the menu; the Buffalo chicken sandwich, some wings, and a weck roast beef sandwich (a Buffalo specialty) which features thin-cut roast beef on a salt-and-caraway-seed-coated kaiser roll called a kummelweck. The food was typical bar food, tasty, salty, and saucy. The decor was a hodge podge of collectible items; police patches from across the country, motorcycles, product signs from the past serveral decades. Plus awards and trophies from over the years. This was on our bucket list trip on the way to Upstate NY. We got into town early afternoon on Saturday, it was not crowded and we got right in to sit at the bar. The wings came with ranch and I made a detour before my flight out and they were nice enough to accommodate and make sure that I could try their best dish before I left buffalo. They also tasted pretty good to go, I ended up eating the wings at the airport, I also learned that they have a restaurant IN the airport, so you can try some of their wings there too. Introduction this new Alphabet Series of reviews: I'm starting a new alphabet series of restaurants gone to with my girlfriend of over a year up through this Easter weekend, which unfortunately have Covid, which means I have some time to crank out some Yelp reviews. Background on trip & getting to Anchor Bar: My girlfriend & I were on a trip to this area for an unofficial wedding more of a love ceremony of a loving couple we are friends with in Rochester. They live in Maryland too, but the guy was born in Rochester. But the real catalyst was the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. They did the ceremony before the eclipse was in totality. In spite of it being completely overcast in Rochester that afternoon, it was still really cool how dark it got. I know they experienced totality in Buffalo/Niagara Falls as well. The next day, April 9, was thankfully a much more of beautiful warm day, as we went to Niagara Falls. We were also thankful that it was just the 2 of us driving out there & back to the Rochester AirBnB on our own; as we wanted a peaceful ride & didn't want to deal with drama. After Niagara Falls, we went to the world famous Anchor Bar for dinner. This is in or near the Allentown neighborhood. They love Josh Allen in Buffalo (not sure if they named Allentown after Josh Allen or if it was always considered Allentown), and I loved him when I had him on my Fantasy football team. They have a free parking lot, which is always a place in a busy central city area. Anchor Bar experience: This is the world famous bar where the buffalo wing started in 1964. I'm not big on real spicy foods. For wings, in recent years I've mostly gone with dry rub and not big on buffalo sauce since it's a bit spicy. My g/f & I split 20 doing half buffalo (as we had to try the original) & BBQ. The wings are solid. Both the buffalo & BBQ were flavorful. It was definitely above average as far as wings go, but it wasn't the most amazing wings I've had either. I had a bit more of a preference to the BBQ as I'm not big on buffalo spicy, but it's not all that spicy, so it was still good. The BBQ was a bit more drenched in BBQ sauce than I'd like. If I'm not getting dry rub, I'd like it to be lighter amount. We were a large group. They accommodated us well. The larger party left a bit earlier from Niagara Falls, but the 6 of us sat at another table near us a bit later as there was more we wanted to see. Server was attentive to our needs like water refills. Neither of us are big drinkers and often just get water, but we decided to split a local beer, which was very good. Additionally, they have a lot of pictures & various bar tavern decor. They even have an old like mid-20th century payphone booth in the front area.
