Anchor Bar is one of those must visit restaurants of Buffalo. Their claim to fame is being the originators of the "buffalo wing". We stopped in on a Thursday evening and were promptly seated. The waitress was very attentive and made sure our glasses were always filled. After browsing the menu, we decided to get the Thursday special which is a large cheese pizza and double order (20) wings for around $25. As always, our food came out piping hot and very delicious. There was quite a bit of food for 2 people so we ended up bringing 3/4 of our pizza home. Note: even though this isn't the "original" Anchor Bar location, the food is just as good. I ate here the other week when I was on business in Buffalo. This was actually my second time having wings from Anchor Bar, the previous time was 5 years ago and it was at their Main Street location. I also ate at another popular wings joint in the area, and clearly they are in some kind of reasonable competition. If you were to ask me, which is better? I would really not have an answer. This is a typical sports bar, the service was decent, we had to wait an unusually long time for wings at lunch, and it was not very busy. Having said that, the wings were crispy, the sauce was tasty, and the atmosphere was average. Next time I would probably go to the downtown location. I love wings, of all sorts. My biggest issue with wings though, is places are capitalizing on the fact that people are willing to spend $1 per wing, when they are clearly not worth that much. I would love to have a manager tell me why exactly hot wings are being marketed for such a high amount of money. What can I say?! Visited Buffalo for the first time last weekend and the receptionist at the hotel we were staying at recommended this place for lunch. I am a big wing aficionado. I can eat wings every day, so when I happened to stumble across this location of Anchor Bar, I had to try it. I had big expectations for Anchor because they "invented" the Buffalo Wing (although not this location). We ordered hot, honey garlic, and medium. The wings were big and juicy, but lacked flavour. The predominant taste of the medium and hot was of vinegar. The hot was more like mild. The honey garlic was much too sweet for my taste. I don't think I'll visit here again. read more

I'd give this place 3.5 - great wings but slow service. We'd definitely come back. So of course, being new to WNY, we heard about buffalo wings being invented by the Anchor Bar. And supposedly, there's a rivalry between Anchor Bar and Duff's. This Transit Rd location is bright, clean but blandly decorated. You feel like you've entered into a franchise restaurant unfortunately - like we had walked into a TGI Fridays. We ordered wings of course, and were a little surprised it took almost 30 minutes to get our order - the restaurant was busy but not full. The wings were great. On Monday, January 7th at 8:30 p.m., we had just landed in Buffalo from San Diego. We were looking forward to wings and pizza and went to the Transit Road location. We were not warmly welcomed as the waitress said she would need to check and see if they were still open. Why does every great American food institution think it's necessary to open a branch in every shopping mall? The locations are without passion, soul and typically anything that made the original location great! No doubt, the wings are decent at this location and the bartender was nice enough but you couldn't find a bar more boring on the planet. I have been to the original location multiple times and I have to say for their first franchise they did an amazing job. With a more modern look the Anchor Bar on Transit Road still embodies everything that we all love about the Anchor Bar. As far as the food goes, my last visit was with a group of 10 and everything came out hot and quick. Our favorites were the Spicy Garlic Parmesan Wings and the Pizza. The sauce and crust of the pizza were the classic Anchor Bar style that I've been having for years, so it's nice to see that they mastered the pizza here as well as downtown. The staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean and way more convenient of a drive for us than getting downtown. I would recommend that you do not read many of the old reviews and try this place for yourself because it really is awesome! After all, it is the Orginal Chicken Wing recipe! read more

Often, I wait until the next day to write a Yelp review. Sometimes my emotions are so high after a restaurant experience that I need to sleep on things so I can appropriately gather my thoughts the next day. Unfortunately, what I felt last night is exactly how I still feel today....... This Anchor Bar location and dining experience couldn't be more different from the original city location. If you're an out-of-town tourist reading this review right now, you need to do 1 of 2 things: Either go across the street to Duffs to get a real "Buffalo" experience (I highly recommend Brennan's or Buffalo Brew Pub actually) or set your GPS to the original Anchor Bar location on Main Street in Buffalo. Location: Terrible location on Transit Road. You have to pull into the Olive Garden parking lot to access this place which can be a cluster*F depending on time of day and traffic conditions. You know that one of the local Buffalo developers pressured the owners into this location... "hey...it's in a high-traffic area...BS". You'd miss the restaurant in a blink of an eye if you weren't looking for it. Inside Experience: I'd like to talk to whomever design the inside layout of the restaurant.....because you did a really, really bad job. Like, you clearly don't have any sort of restaurant experience. Or maybe you are just an interior designer who was given the task of arranging the floorplan and don't understand anything about crowd flow, maximizing service efficiency or hiding eyesores from customers. The bar area is very large and open. We're talking a good 8ft between the bar and the crammed high-top tables across the open floor. It just looked odd. I'm sure it's meant to hold a large amount of people during a sports game, but it looks like a dance floor. If you sat on the north side of the restaurant that my girlfriend and I did, there are booths/tables that form a U-shape. And thennnn.......there are the very awkward middle-island two-seaters. These are back-to-back booths that sit one person on each side of the table. Issue #1: there was constantly people walking past you on either side of the table. Issue #2: there was no hook for my girlfriend to hang her handbag on (and she wasn't happy putting it on the dirty floor). Issue #3: My booth was the closest to the open alley way between the kitchen, bar, and adjacent booth section. We turned our heads and saw straight into the kitchen. My girlfriend found it very distracting and it's irritating watching servers wait for their food on the Expo line. Customers don't want to see into the kitchen. And frankly, restaurants shouldn't want customers to see into their kitchen. When we turned our heads the other way, their was the server table where fountain machine and POS computers were. The place of that table is not only distracting, but also a waste of a space where another booth could have been placed. The server table would then be relocated on the wall kiddy-corner to the bar floor and blocking the view to inside the kitchen. Service: Average. Our waitress was friendly aside from putting in the wrong appetizer. All of the front house needs more training. The biggest surprise was when the busser said "have a goodnight" as we were leaving our table. It was very pleasant and courteous to hear at the end of a sour dining experience. Food: If you take away 1 thing out of this entire review, pleeease do not order the chicken wing dip. $11 seemed pricey for a dip appetizer....Well, that's because it feeds 4 people. But what makes this dip terrible is the quality of chicken they put in it. You know those rubbery, pre-cooked chicken breasts you can buy in the freezer section? Yep, it's that chicken. I've cooked in enough restaurants to know the difference between frozen processed and fresh chicken. I wanted to take the dip, walk back into the kitchen, and throw it in the cook's face. How embarrassing for a well-known place like the Anchor Bar to be serving fast-food quality meat. Teressa Bellissimo has to be turning over in her grave. Anyways, the wings were massively plump and juicy. If you're not a fan of the traditional hot sauce, try the chipotle bbq. So why is my review so long? Because it's a tragedy that the Anchor Bar, a famed, historical restaurant institution, failed to offer the basic dining experience that thousands of patrons have gotten at their original location. I had very, very high hopes walking into this place.....but at the end of the day, it was just another wing place. It's a business expansion that went horribly wrong. A few decades ago, it would have been much easier to make the claim as a restaurant that you had 'Buffalo's Best Wings'. Nowadays, there is a pizzeria within striking distance of another pizzeria throughout the city of Buffalo and everywhere in between. To an out-of-towner who doesn't know any better, they assume that either Duff's or The Anchor Bar have 'the best wings'. Wrong on both counts. I've had Duff's many times and while their suicide sauce is really a cut above the rest, their service, inability to competently take an order over the phone (at the Dick Rd. location) and their disgusting fryer grease immediately disqualify them. I've never been to the 'Original' Anchor Bar, who claim to have the 'Original' chicken wing. In my estimation, that's like visiting Philadelphia and finding twenty different establishments who are all the 'Home Of The Original Philly Cheese Steak. However, I wanted to try Anchor Bar's wings at least once, and now that they have a location in Williamsville I seized on that opportunity. I ordered with an open mind over the phone and the woman who took my order was very friendly. I should have been sitting down when she gave me the total for a double (20) order of wings: $23.90. This is not a fair market price for wings anywhere in the greater Buffalo area. I've seen prices from $15 on the low end (Penora's in Lancaster) to about $1 per wing including tax as an average. $23.90 borders on extortion. While some may argue that I was paying for the name, I have yet to figure out how to eat names, and no double order of wings is worth $23.90 in this economy. Even the new ('Original') Duff's location across the street at the Eastern Hills Mall is less, and I'm sure they invented the wing too. Originally. The wings themselves were nothing to write home about. I got them 'suicidally' hot, they were saucy and...that's about it. They were not crispy (which is a must for most, not for me) and while they didn't have Duff's insistent aftertaste of fryer grease that hasn't been changed since the '80s, the flavor (while it had a nice kick) was not in the neighborhood of $23.90. I doubt that I'll order from them again unless someone else is buying and the other 47 pizzerias within a five minute radius have all spontaneously combusted. They have priced themselves right out of the market in my opinion and the product does not warrant a higher than average cost. read more

We were seated right away...We ordered Chicken wings..Hot... Pizza with cheese and pepperoni, fried pickles, boneless wings with garlic/Parmesan and BBQ sauce and loaded fries... Worst meal we've had in a long time.. The wings were dry and way over done..not hot at all... The pizza was over done on top and raw on bottom, loaded fries were cold and over done.. Fried pickles were good..for dessert we ordered cannoli.. It was soft and stale... Our server was not attentive.. We have visited Anchor Bar on Main St many times and have always been happy with it..
