Had them work on a snowblower for regular maintenance in Nov 24. Once I got back and first snow it started up but wouldn't stay started and called several times over winter and got vmail full each time. I shoveled the whole winter. Finally reached them and they told me that they can't look at until July. Waste of $200+ and I had even purchased the snow blower from them. read more

I brought my Husqvarna chainsaw to them because it didn't start. Finally after two weeks it was ready to be picked up but still didn't run. According to them it had an air leak and can't keep running and to expensive to take apart and repair. They charged me $50 for really nothing. I did some research and ordered a carburator on Amazon for $26.00 and replaced it in 15 minutes. It started right up and runs like a charm now. read more

For what it's worth...I brought in my old-ish Honda push lawn mower (still started 1st pull...) but my son hit a hidden rock in long grass. After that, it started, but when I engaged the blades, the thing shook violently - enough so I didn't even try to use it. Took it to Andover Sm Engine, explained what happened and without looking at it, he said he knew exactly what it was - some sort of 'rod was thrown' - and it was totaled. I ended up buying a new one there - he said he'd take the broken one off my hands. The next day, my old broken Honda was in his lot for sale...apparently it wasn't 'totaled'... Ironically, several years ago I brought in an Echo handheld leaf blower I'd had for about 12-years...I believe it wouldn't start... Never did any maint on it. He asked how old it was - told him about 12. He said something like "count your blessings it's worked this long - throw it out and get yourself a new one". I should have checked ebay the next day for handheld Echo leaf blowers. read more

Brought my snow blower to andover small engine after the snow storm. the auger was screeching. next morning mike called me and told me it was fine,running and throwing snow like a champ.he could have kept my machine longer,and could have said something costly was wrong nope. he was 100%honest and I picked up my machine . RIP OFF!!!!!!!!!!! Buyer beware! I wish Yelp had a triple Negative . I used this place for the first time for a tune-up on a $900 ride mower I've had for 5 years. Besides charging me $459 for a basic tune-up; the machine didn't work when I got it back. They sent some "mechanic" over the following day, he started the machine after having to take it apart in my driveway, only to have the same problem after he left. The mower was picked up again. Now they claim a mouse bit the coil!!! Yeah right! And charged me another $50 on top of the $459. Stay far away from this business. My machine was brought back 1 hr ago. There is no more back and forth. If it has the same issue taking them straight to court and not wasting my time calling anymore. This business has zero integrity. read more

This company is absolutely the worst business I have had to deal in quite some time. Mike (the owner) is a complete ass when dealing with the public. Brought my mower in 1st week of July got in back 3 week in Aug used it once same problem. I got it back this past week and seems there was mud in the trans housing. It took over six weeks for Mike the "professional mechanic" to find mud in the casing and then charges me 112.25 for an oil change and blade sharpening. There's no one I talk to who has anything positive to say about this place. My days of shopping there are in the past. They always seem to want to sell you something, including service/eqp't. that you don't need, or in general have an attitude that doesn't sit well. Charges have mysteriously shown up on invoices that weren't discussed and they always want you to buy a new one of whatever, instead of fixing what you've got. Five or six folks on my street all agree that this is NOT a place for service nor new equipment. Try Turf Depot on North Broadway in Salem, NH instead. read more

Went into shop to see about a snow blower repair. He took one look at it, and tried to start it one time, and said it was "Oh, that's a blown engine, can't be fixed" then without missing a beat "We have this used one on sale" and tried to push it on me with addon's like something called "services". The guy was sleazy, and honestly, the super loud and big screen blaring Fox News was a huge turn off when the sales dude is yelling over it, but still turns to watch it every few min. read more

I recently had my push mower fixed/tuned up there. I've been living in Andover for 7 years, this was the first time I did business with them. I would say they are the hidden gem in Andover. Their labor rate is not cheap but still reasonable compared to other shops in Boston area. But it worth every penny I paid. They also sell new ones too. Purchased my Husqvarna snowblower back in 2008 from Andover Small Engine. Have always kept up with routine maintenance but the last few years it hasn't been running so great (under load it bogged down and didn't perform well) so I called for service. They picked it up and dropped it off for me for a reasonable fee. After service, it runs better than I remember it ever running. Ya. Don't go here. Brought my snowblower to be fixed. Guy pulls the cord once and tells me the engine is blown, nothing I can do. His recommendation is to leave it on the side of the road and see if someone takes it. Actually believed him for a day or so. I ended up going back to Home Depot where I had purchased it. I didn't realize they could set up servicing, which was stupid of me, but I figured I'd get quality service from a local small engine service shop. Home Depot sent it out to be fixed, a week later I have my snowblower back and it was only $115 bucks to fix. Ya, blown engine my ass. This guys a joke. Don't waste your time going there. I had stopped going here for several years as the general attitude of the ownership was less than inviting or helpful. I have recently had some very good experiences until I was met by the eldest brother who, aside from being rather rude and seemingly irritated, also seems to be far more interested in getting shop hours than helping customers interested in maintaining their own equipment that was purchased, at a premium, from them. I would have given a higher rating had it not been for this latest unwelcoming interaction, which is so representative of what I thought was the old face of the shop. As someone who believes in supporting local businesses, especially local businesses such as this, I'm very disappointed to find that what I thought was a total turn around has proven to be only partially true. I hope they read this and realize that the very people who can help their business thrive are the same ones who feel ostracized by them with regard to a shared interest in the dying art of small engine repair and maintenance. read more

I'm not a computer type of guy, but I just got off the phone with (I believe) Chris and he was so helpful that I felt compelled to write my first ever review. I called Andover Small Engine, not to buy something, or check availability, but to ask advice on parts I bought somewhere else. I was expecting the normal "Gloom and doom" you get when you haven't spent your $ on their stuff. Instead, I was given great info and advice on what I could do myself and what Andover Small Engine could do for me, if need be. Chris spent over 10 minutes on the phone with me, during business hours, with customers in his shop that I could hear in the background. Very pleasant, intelligent, interested in what I had to say, and helpful with a honest opinion. I'm still not sure if I'm going to attempt this repair myself, or have someone else do it for me. What I do know is that, if I end up paying to have my saw fixed, my money and business will be going to Andover Small Engine!! It's nice to know that there are still businesses out there that realize who the customer is and it's not just about getting into your wallet, it's also about satisfaction and return business. P.S. Had a snowblower repaired there. My auger wasn't turning right. Specifically asked them to replace the augur drive belt. They picked up my snowblower in the Spring. Weeks later, they delivered the "repaired" snowblower to my house while I was at work. I look at the receipt, and they did not replace the drive belt. I called them, and they said the drive belt was OK. I said what if it isn't OK, they said bring it back. Come Winter, my augur wasn't turning right. read more

I maintain a residence in Andover during the Summer and Florida during the Winter. When I returned last Summer to Massachusetts, my lawnmower wouldn't start. I took it to Andover Small Engine Service and they told me it was shot and that it would be cheaper for me to buy a new mower. Unsatisfied with that answer, I went to another store and they fixed the problem in minutes: it was the spark plug. I am suspicious that this is the shop's modus operandi, to automatically tell people their machines are unrepairable and then try to sell them a new one, I think this store is best avoided. read more

OVERPRICED. TURN AROUND TIME IS TERRIBLE. SNOWBLOWER CAME BACK IN WORSE CONDITION! So we dropped off our Snowblower in early November for a tune up and a request for a tire repair (there was a nail in the tire). Didn't hear back from them. WE called at the end of January to see if it was done and amazingly it was. So how long had it been sitting there done?! When my husband went to pick it up he asked if the nail was still in the tire and the serviceman said it had been repaired. As my husband was loading it into the truck he saw the nail in the tire. REALLY?! You have had the machine for almost three months! So the first time we used it an exterior shield (around the engine) was coming off. After close inspection there was only one screw out of 4 holding the shield on. The shield wasn't falling off before we sent it in and if they miss a nail in a tire I can only assume that the screws were also overlooked. Currently using it and it is NOW LEAKING OIL?! Never did that before. so basically we got a new spark plug for $275.00 I will never use them again and I encourage everyone to find a reputable service shop on sites that review businesses or by word of mouth. read more

Used them to service a snowblower (out of season) and at best they were expensive, convenient, and sloppy. Convenient because they will pickup and deliver. Very expensive for overall service cost (almost $400 for a snowblower tuneup -- seriously!). And sloppy because for a tuneup they really did a minimal service. For that dough I'd hope they'd do a fuel system cleanup and adjust everythign, but they really just did the basic lube. Didn't even adjust the friction plate. Since then I've learned to do this stuff myself, so I have a sense of just how little time it takes to properly service a snowblower. But at least they pickup and delivery! read more

First, I am really happy I went to Andover Small Engine before reading some of these reviews. I went to them without researching since they are a local company, and have been here longer than I have lived in Andover. I always assume a small business that survives that long is doing something right. I walked in on a Saturday with a leaf blower I purchased there a few years before that wouldn't run. Chris discussed the repair process, and gave the best case and worst case ballpark estimates. While I was there we discussed a top-to-bottom service of my John Deere lawn tractor. I felt confident I was in the right place, and made an appointment for them to pick up the tractor for the tune. It was picked up on time. Long story short, that was three weekends of fall cleanup ago. Both blower and tractor are running like brand-new. The work was finished on time, and both jobs came in under the estimates. The only reason I am not giving them 5 stars - they tend to be understaffed and therefore hard to reach at times. Small trade for the level of work and value for the dollar. I will continue to go to ASE and recommend them as well. read more

Done with this place. Overpriced and the attitude of the owner (or maybe it's the manager) is terrible. He is rude and condescending and all he wants to do is sell you something new despite being a repair shop. I bought a new Husqvarna snowblower from them last year and after getting it home realized it was missing parts. I drove back and asked where the rubber flap is that goes on the discharge chute. His response was "We never put those on". He begrudgingly went and found the part and gave it to me. Got home and while going over the snowblower realized the spare shear pins and wrench were missing. Went back AGAIN and asked for these parts and got an attitude while he want and looked for them. A month after i started using the blower it was leaking oil. I loaded it in my truck and drove it back to them since it was under warranty. I was told the oil leak was "Normal" and "They all do that" Went to a different Husqvarna dealer (moscariello equipment) who not only said "No, that's NOT normal" but fixed it without any hassle. Overall, just a terrible place. Stopped going their for parts too. They treat customers as though they are stupid and don't want to be bothered. read more
