I called about having a garbage disposal replaced. Richard's said they could come out the following day but, 20 minutes later they were at my door. He was in the neighborhood and just wanted to take a look. It turned out to be a bit more complicated than a simple replacement due to the age of the older unit. "Nope" he said. "You'll have to hire a regular plumber." That was not what I would expect to hear in this day and age. He had a chance to sell me disposal and charge me for a bad installation job. Instead, he took the high road. He did not even charge me for a service call. Before he left I asked for the number of a good plumber. Without hesitation he had the name and number in my hand. I called the plumber and two days later had a brand new disposal up and running. The plumber did say he would have to make adjustments to install the new disposal but he could do it in about an hour. In 45 min I was writing a check and my problem fixed. THANK YOU RICHARDS. I will be looking to you for appliances very soon. This is service you CANNOT GET at the big box stores. Bought a Washer from Richards. It failed in warranty (4 months later). Not a huge problem... yet. Richards did two service visits and said "we can't fix it, call the company and another service provider." Richards declined to contact the company on my behalf and declined to connect me with another service company. Essentially - they said "not my problem" and declined to provide any further assistance even if that assistance would have been at no incremental cost to them. The service people themselves were friendly, arrived on time, etc... My complaint is that the company does the bare minimum to support the product. I've been without a washer for 3.5 weeks and expect to need to wait another week. Richards doesn't care. read more

We bought a washer and dryer on a Saturday and the owner said it would be delivered on Wednesday. I got a call on Tuesday that they were ready to deliver now. I told them they had the wrong day and waited for them to deliver the next day. They don't arrive and when I called they said I misheard. Instead of delivering that day they told me I had to wait til Monday. When Monday arrived they brought them in and to make sure the water was hooked up they ran the machine and proceeded to wash the manual. Which they placed outside and said it would dry and be fine. They didn't tell me that they didn't hook up the exhaust vent which I just realized now when I was feeling a breeze near the dryer. To add insult to injury they called me a week after installation, where I thought they were going to apologize for the delivery mayhem and see if we liked the machine. Instead they said I hadn't paid for the machines. When I reminded him that indeed I had paid on the Saturday we picked them out. He asked for a copy of the receipt. Since I was at work I informed him I didn't have the receipt near me but could send it later. He asked for my credit card info and saw that I had paid them. I have always promoted buying local but if I'm going to be treated that poorly, I will be heading to Lowe's and Home Depot where I expect it. read more

We purchased a full suite of appliances from Richard's for our new home. We had our appliances delivered in several deliveries to accommodate the various subcontractors. Also, we ordered a gas dryer and when we went to hook it up, found that we were set up for an electric dryer. We called Richard's and explained the situation - they were out the next day to switch it out. I also want to mention that their delivery crew is exceptional! Courteous, on time and by the third delivery we just let them go into the house even though we were't there! I had problems with my dishwasher, so I called Richard's Appliance on a Friday. They scheduled me for Tuesday where they showed up at almost the exact time they told me it would be. Mark, the technician, got right to work. It turns out the part that was broken they needed to order. They received the part by Wednesday and when I returned their message on Thursday, they were able to put it in within the 1/2 hour of my phone call. Mark was awesome in explaining the problem. My fiancée and I just purchased a home and had been having trouble with our freezer door always getting stuck. Eventually, it gave out and we snapped the attachment to the door, cracking the plastic. We went in, thinking we'd have to get a new fridge. Turns out they didn't have the exact door in stock, but gave us a similar sized door and let me borrow some lubricant to fix it at home. I was hesitant I could fix the door on my own, but they took the time to show me how. I was really touched by the owner's kindness to help out, and give us a door for an extremely reduced price- and give me the tools I needed to fix at home. I definitely will be going back for future appliance needs. This experience really showed me how small community businesses beat going to Lowe's or Home Depot. read more

I used to be a loyal customer purchasing at least 4 pieces of equipment from this company. Recently purchased a Whirlpool stove from them. After the first few uses I noticed that the edge of the stove got extremely hot. It was so warm it left a red mark on my stomach. I have never experienced this with any other electric stove. We had the tech come out and when testing it he had the stove top get so hot that it warped the back panel. When we called Richards Appliances- they said call whirlpool. They provided NO assistance. They would not allow us to return the stove. When we mentioned we had small children the manager replied "tell them to not touch the stove" I understand that they are the middle man however they never even offered to provide assistance to us wit Whirlpool. When purchasing the stove NO ONE ever mentioned that the edge of the stove gets that hot and it is a "design flaw". I will NEVER purchase anything from them again. I have referred many people to check them out and they lost a referral in the community. read more

Purchased a Maytag dishwasher before we discovered that Maytag was purchased by Whirlpool. What a crap product! In less than 3 years the control panel failed to the tune of $286. When we informed Richard's, we we told that they had numerous complaints regarding the control panel(google it) and we were encouraged to contact Whirlpool directly. So much for any sense of obligation by Richard's. When a new machine cost $600, It's obvious that Whirlpool/ Richards prefers to make money off the repair rather than compete on quality. I have a kitchen range/stove from the 70's and it still works great. The only issue I had with it, is that one of the drip pans was disintegrating. I have tried many places, but have been unable to find a proper fitting replacement. I gave Richard's Appliance a call on Saturday morning and a very nice man (i belive it was Bill/the owner) answered the phone. I was not able to provide a model number for my range/stove, but he felt that he likely had what I needed. He suggested I come by and bring in what was left of the drip pan I had. I arrived later that morning and was greeted with a smile. He opened the bag I brought and carefully checked out the remnants of my drip pan. He then went upstairs and came down a few minutes later with EXACTLY what I needed. I was concerned what the price was going to be since it is "rare". Terrible- don't waste your money! (unethical business practices, a warranty that they do not honor, horrendous service, snake oil salesman- save your money and buy elsewhere) I bought TWO appliances. When they were connected and tested BOTH did not work. (Here are *some* of the details should you care to learn from my experience) I tried to resolve the issue... LUIS laughed at my suggestion to either repair them or replace them with working units, he said "why would I want broken appliances back in my store" (Can you imagine?? Why would I want broken appliances IN MY HOME??) He suggested I pay for the repair man they use to come by and assess the appliances and then he would "split the cost to repair with me"- Ok- I thought.... that sounds reasonable... although I would imagine the cost of repair would be more than the cost of just replacing them with units that work from his store....I paid for the repair guy to come out and sure enough... the repairs cost more than the units... Luis told me to come back into the store... I told him with an infant, its difficult, but if he promises to be there, I will come (*when I arranged to meet him at the store when initially purchasing the items, he did not show up... hence me checking)- he confirmed he would be there... but changed the time three times... once he confirmed he would be there for the 4th meeting time... he did not show up (OMG- this guy) but his sister was there and under his instruction, would sell me a more expensive- and "hopefully working" fridge and dishwasher... I said no way was I going to give them more money... I could have bought new at this point... I wanted what he suggested... just give me half the cost of the repair... or (what I had suggested) just trade them out for working units....They did neither... So I am writing this to warn you- Their appliances do not work (and the fridge was full of mold). They do not honor their warranty. their customer service is horrendous. They have unethical business practices... I don't know how many people they do this to- hoping that they can just take your money and not give you what is promised in return... but like I said earlier.... learn from my mistake and just buy new (or used) somewhere else. read more

Customer satisfaction is not a priority for this business. They won't stand behind their product and will leave you hung out to dry after the sale. Buyer beware.  Had a brand new Maytag dishwasher installed 2 weeks ago. It was on backorder for over a month which was expected given the current covid situation. I paid for the unit and they cashed my check right away and it cleared the bank.  I was okay with waiting.  It was installed without incident.  Two weeks after use, the dishwasher did not clean the dishes.  There was something obviously wrong with it.  It was defective.  My wife called for service.  Instead of coming out and taking a look at it they told her to run the hot water for 5 minutes before using the dishwasher stating the water was not hot enough.  Our water gets hot pretty quick since our home is only 5 years old.  I was expecting a repair, instead they were blaming the cause of the problem (without evaluating the situation) with the water temperature. Sounded bogus and it was. The unit is obviously under warranty. They probably could have easily fixed it, however the option wasn't even presented. They did not want to be accountable for it after the sale. I'm a reasonable person and would have accepted any reasonable outcome, however this did not happen. Frustrated by their lack of responsiveness and failure to stand by their warranty my wife asked them to uninstall it and give us a refund so we could get a new one. They refused and did not provide any resolution.  We were stuck. It wasn't until I called the owner a few days later and threatened him with legal action that he finally agreed to come and take it away and give us a complete refund.  I had to twist his arm and remind him of consumer law.  He breached the warranty and since it had been less than 30 days I was well within my right to return the unit for a full refund.  He reluctantly agreed. This whole situation could have been avoided. They took it down a path they shouldn't have.  I don't know if it was intentional or just plain incompetence. I've used this company in the past with no issue for repairs and was honestly surprised by how I was treated. I'll never go back. I prefer to hire local companies and am even willing to spend a bit more with the understanding that I might be treated better and receive personalized service, however this did not happen. Overall a terrible experience and it is unfortunate for them because I have an entire home of appliances I am purchasing this month.  So, if you are looking for service after the fact when something goes wrong it won't happen here - not without a fight. There are many better options out there. I'm from Newburyport and work in Amesbury. I'm not the only one who has had an experience like this.  I have friends who have had similar dealings.  Apparently the owner wants to run his business into the ground. And by the way, when I received the refund it was a check.  He stated he could not give me cash since I did not pay in cash, even though my check cleared his bank over 30 days ago.  Sounds like he doesn't know how the bank works either.  When a check clears your account it is now cash. Overall a complete joke and waste of time. Spend your money elsewhere - that's what I'm going to do. read more

It was great how quickly they got here and they had the part ready to go and fixed our washer within an hour. The technician was friendly and in and out. Monday they never showed and didn't call. When I called to find out what happened they said they couldn't squeeze me in till next Friday. no I'm sorry or kind customer service. I don't know if I've ever been as disappointed with a local business as I have with Richard Appliance. In fact, this is my first Yelp post. On Dec 7 (two months ago) a technician came out to look at our Jenn Air stove, gave us an estimate of $500 for right front burner and control panel since our down draft wouldn't turn on. I paid the $79.95 visit/estimate cost and the parts were supposedly ordered. After the holidays, I still hadn't heard back so Ii called. Nothing had been ordered, somehow slipped through the cracks so they placed order and asked me to call them to see if parts were in within a couple days. On Jan 27 I called and one part was in, but the other was in Louisville, KY. Technician asked me to call next week to see if that part was in. Apparently, they don't call out when parts come in to schedule the repair visit? I did call the following week, both parts were in and we scheduled the visit for today. This morning, the original technician that gave us first estimate called and said he didn't realize it was an electronic burner and had ordered wrong part. The correct part would be an additional $300 or so including labor above and beyond the original $500 quote. When I questioned the quote after waiting all this time especially after having had to chase them down, he told me we had a $4000 stove and weren't going to find another one for $800. Although I appreciate his concern for protecting my initial investment (hmmmm) i was't going to trust him to repair my stove when he was unable to figure out from the get go what kind of burner replacement we even needed. He not only diagnosed the problem right away 2 weeks ago, but was honest about how long it would take to get the parts in and how much it would be to fix. He was at my house promptly at 8:15am and in 1 hour was all cleaned up, oven put back together, and he was walking out my front door! Thanks Mark! And thanks Richard's Appliance! i spoke with a person at richards appliance monday to schedule a repair of a new washing machine which i did not purchase at richards. i explained that the owners manual instructed me to remove the drain hose to make sure it was not clogged because the machine would not drain. the next step was to take the rear panel off and inspect the drain that comes out of the drain pump. i took the hose clamp off and all the water came out. i put it back on and ran through another wash cycle. it did not drain again. i released the water and here we are i'm calling you. he scheduled my appointment wednesday. the repair man came and was disrespectful to my elderly mother who was there to just let him into the house. he made comments about the machine ($900 unit) and that "quick wash" should never be used. he turned it on and water went all over my basement floor. he said i'm not working on this unit because it was tampered with. i called richard appliance back and explained the situation. i got the same person that took my appointment on monday. he told me he would not work on the washer because it had been tampered with. i said don't you remember the conversation we had on monday? he put me on hold and when he came back he said we will not work on your washer. his repairman was a young kid he gave my 76 year old mom a hard time and an attitude. i do not recommend richards appliance to anyone. oh i almost forgot they asked for a credit card number prior to making my appointment read more

I'm afraid that this was the last call we will place with Richard's. We called Richard's after our Whirlpool refrigerator was unable to sustain a cold temperature. They told us that someone would be out the next day to look at it and the technician visit would cost $100. That amount would be separate from any parts and additional labor for said parts required for any repairs. We agreed. The technician showed up within the promised time window. He looked at the refrigerator and within a minute or so told me that it was the circuit board (AKA the "Jazz board") and that it needed to be replaced and that "it was very expensive board". The repair would cost $350 and proceeded to tell me that he just happened to have one in the truck with him which was meant for another customer but "he'd let me have it". I thought that was an odd thing to say. I noticed that in the work order that he had with him, "Jazz board" was already written down before he did anything. Obviously, they knew what the most likely cause of this problem was before they even came out. I told him that we need the refrigerator working and to go ahead and replace it. This was a simple PC board remove and replace (just plug it back in). It took all of two minutes (yes, it would've taken 2 minutes for anyone). Again, I understand that time and knowledge are not free but when does it cross a line? Much to my regret, I didn't do any homework on this issue and, right then and there, I had no choice but to pay the fee demanded. We need a functioning refrigerator. After the tech. left. I proceeded to check out the "very expensive part" online, and it retails (brand new) between $80-$90! I understand that this is not a charity and services cost money. But, there's profit and then there's profit! $350 dollars for a fairly inexpensive part with a very simple installation. A total disappointment for a so-called local, family business. I chose to trust that we would be treated fairly and honestly. Next time I'll know better but, it was an expensive lesson. We will never use their services again. read more

He did finally I found a place that had it in stock that day! A little more expensive than going to Sears but saved me time and hassle! Purchased a Whirlpool Centennial Top Loading washing machine from Richard's Appliance, Salisbury, MA and this falls under the category of buyer beware. First of all we were talked into buying this particular machine by the owner of Richard's Appliance and was given such a sales pitch both my husband and I bought into it. The model is a complete lemon, whirlpool has had thousands of complaints regarding the poor performance. The two biggest issues with this machine is the clothes do not get clean and in most cases don't get wet all the way through. Richard's Appliance has told us that we don't know how to wash or load a machine (I am 63 years old and have been doing laundry for over 40 years) and the latest from Richards appliance is sorry there is nothing we can do and if you sue us we look forward to it!!!!!! I needed tub seal and bearings replaced on my washer. Technician quoted me $800. Knowing it is a max 2 hour job with $60 parts, I asked him if there is a lower cost way to do it. He said no and suggested I buy another machine. I sent him on his way. This was either laziness - he didn't want to work on it, or total lack of knowledge about what it takes to repair the machine. Either way, it is a bad mark on the business. I called Sears. A day and $220 later, the machine is good as new - quiet and without leaks. read more

I was forced to use Richard's Appliance in Salisbury to repair a washer dryer stacking kit at my rental property when my dryer came loose from the stackable washer and no handyman would touch it. From the first phone call to the scheduling of service, to the non-existent follow up phone call I requested, the service was TERRIBLE. Bill acted like he was doing me a favor by paying them $300 for a 15 minute job! They never called to tell me what time they would be there so when I missed their phone call on the day of asking if they could come early, I called back and Bill told me that since I didn't answer the phone, they may have just skipped me even though we were not yet in the time window they had failed to give me. He insisted that they must have given me a time but they did not. I had to ask him to stop arguing with me and just call the driver to make sure they were still going to show up. He agreed but said it may be too late. I then requested a call back to explain the work they did since I was out of state. He reluctantly agreed then never called. They charged my card on file with no notice. STAY AWAY! read more

On sat a week b4 I called their service dept ... They were very courteous at 1st . Just one down a new They promptly showed up on Monday with the schedule between 8 and 11 no problem my son was there I knew they were coming ... A service Tech explained to me that it would not be until Friday that they could fix it ..Without a phone call they showed up on Wednesday the day before Thanksgiving Nobody was home ..John Friday morning at 9 Am, ..i called to let them know my son would be waiting ..Guy explained to me that he has no service tec available it would be Tuesday or Wednesday before they come to see us ...I am going to buy a new stove at this moment they can air service the dept up there Trash can I will never ever recommend for deal with these people again read more
