Ive gone to Anreas Gorges 3 times now. Of course Ive done a lot of the normal stuff (get my sleeves shortened, hem the pants, etc). But Ive also taken some room from the back of some suit jackets. My wife tends to buy a lot of suit jackets with lots of detail at the ends of the sleeves. So she typically has to have the tailors shorten the sleeves by altering from the shoulders. Not only does Andreas provide great service and great work, but his prices are very reasonable. Some of the work that my wife had done has typically cost her twice as much in NY. Try to go during the weekdays. Its a little bit of a hassle to go on the weekends because the doors for the building are closed (but its not a big deal). Go to Andreas with your alterations for custom designs. I think you'll be very happy. read more

Top notch professional tailor. I'm 4'10" and so everything I buy needs to be altered. I dropped off a pair of Joe's jeans and a lovely brown bridesmaid's dress and had both back in 10 days for $60 total ($45 for the dress, $15 for the pants). I called before I went over (based on some of the experiences listed on this site), and both were done. So I went over to Andy and hot damn, both things looked great. Andy is kind and has decent tailoring skills. And, he didn't even mention that I needed a girdle with that dress since its a little too clingy. Just kept to his own business. read more

Wow! Where do I start?! These guys did made to measure suits for my wedding, and we had such a fun time picking out fabrics, stitching, buttons, and they all came in SO well. They were so good, I have since ordered more made to measure suits from the team and again, compliments abound and I feel sharper than ever. The details are really there. The team is friendly, patient, honest, and completely on point. The best combination of precision tailoring and craftsmanship. I also decided to take in my whole wardrobe to see what could be "modernized" - turns out, they did magical things to make my slightly out of date suits fit really well, and told me when some weren't worth it for what I was looking for. Called in to make an appointment and was warmly greeted by Andreas Jr, son of the famous Andreas. He answered my questions about tailoring, price, and turnover rate without any issues and frustrations. That alone made me want to pay a visit. I had all my Tuxedo buttons lined up from an error at J Crew's personal tailor and picked up my altered tuxedo within the same day. Is there anything Andreas can't do? I've brought him lined blazers, pants, and silk blouses, and they've all been beautifully tailored for a really decent cost. His FiDi location makes it uber convenient for me to drop in on a lunch break and still have time to sit down somewhere to eat. One time I brought in a silk dress for a wedding with an urgent need for it to be finished right away. He was completely accomodating and did a perfect job to boot. I can't say enough about his work. Andy is a great tailor and a nice guy. I have had some minor alterations, and also had some shirts made. This was my first experience with bespoke clothing, and I'm very happy with the shirts and will be going back to get more. Be aware that, as is often the case with quality service providers, Andy is often very busy, especially on the weekends. I've never tried leaving a piece with a hard deadline, so I'm not sure how that would work out. But if you want high-quality work and are not rushed, I'd recommend Andy. read more

AMAZING! SIMPLY AMAZING! i bought a dress from ASOS(a British store) it was Zebra SEQUIN print LOVES IT!!! but because of my large womanly assets i needed to go a size up. It looked like a bag! So after lots of yelping I brought my beautiful dress here. He not only made it fit like a glove but also hemmed my BCBG dress for my cousin's baptism. ALL IN A WEEK! I had a few pairs of pants that didn't fit properly, and sure enough Andreas was able to breathe new life into them. He took in the seat, adjusted the waist, and lengthened the legs a touch. Now they fit perfectly. He's quick and efficient when you visit his shop -- and the work he does is high quality for a reasonable price. What more could you ask for? This shop is so strangely located - in this random buildilng down a hall, but entering the door is like entering another world. it's a tiny room filled with high quality clothing. Andreas is a gentleman, it feels like you're in the old world getting your clothes tailored by some craftsman from the 19th century - and I mean that in the best way. My dress was completed on time and the process was pleasant. My one complaint is the price - he charged $60 to basically take in the bust line, which he didn't mention ahead of time. To be fair, I didn't ask. I don't know much about tailoring so maybe this is right in line, but I did experience a bit of sticker shock. Then again, I'd rather pay more and have an outfit that i can wear, then skimp and end up with uneven hem lines. read more

Andy is terrific, extremely helpful and does great, great work. I have had 2 sportcoats and 1 suit altered -- off the rack and altered for a better fit -- and been very happy with the process and the results. I also had the experience noted in some reviews of one piece not being ready on the date I had been given. But having read these reviews first, I went in with that expectation, and was clear in my own mind that I was not in a rush, I did not need to coats or suit done in a short time frame for any specific event, and I told him that. Based on the reviews here and observations in his studio, I think he's in high demand, very busy, and is going to fall behind in workload in order to maintain his level of quality. That's a guess, but probably important to think about it that way if you want to come out happy: give him extra time. read more

So I took everyone's advice and Andreas is such a nice person! He really gave off such a gentle feeling that I just knew he would take care of my wedding dress, and he did. I would trust him with anything after this. He clearly cares about his work and made sure I was happy. He didn't rush me during any of the times we met even though it was clear he was very busy. His place is clean and comfortable, and by the looks of all the expensive clothing around, he's trusted by many. He altered the length, took in the bust (which was complex due to the way it was constructed), fixed a tear, repaired the netting underneath, and bustled it. (a lot!) Everything was done with style, care and attention to detail. The only negative at all was that since he was so busy, when I went in for our second appointment two weeks after our first meeting, he hadn't gotten to the gown yet. This wouldn't have been bad except that I live way across town and it took a chunk out of my day to take bart from the upper haight to downtown and back. He did seem very sorry though! I would suggest calling the day of or the day before to confirm your appointment. But it's a small thing when you look at the overall picture of how happy I am with the work he does and the fact that you get a real feeling that you can trust him. read more

So i just wrote a review for loehmann's and i was reminded of my wonderful visit to andreas gorges. around new years, i bought this super cute silk nicole miller dress from loehmann's. it was a steal, so i was willing to deal with the loose pointed dart situation going on in my boob area. i searched yelp for a good tailor, and came across two in the downtown area. one was likely less expensive, so i tried it first. i don't remember the name of the place, alls i know is it was a mom and pops/eastern european situation. i went in and before i could fully explain the problem and they rushed me into the changing room. once i've got the dress on (with a strapless bra), i'm like "so, the darts are pointed. i think there's too much material..." and the woman shoves her hand down the front of the dress, inside my bra, grazing my nipple and says "there is nothing i can do about it." i left feeling discouraged and slightly violated and i headed over to andreas gorges. i was a little intimidated at first, but andreas was super kind. he listened to my problem, then had me try on the dress. he told me the darts were not fixable, but he could just sew the seam all the way up to make the cup smooth; if it didn't look good, he would take it out. i agreed, and to my surprise, he fixed it right then and there while i watched. he hung the dress back up for me and said that he actually used to work with a lot of nicole miller dresses (sweet). in the end, the dress looked perfect. he charged me $10 and i was so happy with the result (and quick service) that i gave him a $10 tip. Since moving to the Bay Area a few years ago, I wanted to find myself a good tailor; however, I am an inveterate procrastinator, so I kept putting it off - then disaster struck. You see, I won a bet. The prize was a custom made suit, something that I have wanted for years... I was so excited about the suit, that I decided to shell out some money and get two. I went and got measured, chose the cloth, instructed the tailor (a guy from Hong Kong, who comes into the US a few times a year) as to exactly what I wanted, paid him, and waited excitedly for a few weeks. The suits arrived and I was ecstatic, and then I put them on. They just didn't fit right - the legs were too long (way too long) and baggy, the jackets had a strange pinched look at the middle. It was a nightmare - thousands of dollars out the window, I thought. After I calmed down, I decided that I needed to find a good tailor to see whether anything could be done - I read a bunch of Yelps and decided to try Andreas Gorges - across the board, people seemed to acknowledge his skillful alterations and taste. I called him up, and he had time to see me that Saturday (convenient!). Saturday rolled around, and I made my way to city and found his office - the doors were locked, but a quick phone call brought him down in about 5 minutes. He had me try on each suit, and explain what I was looking for - within 15 minutes, he had everything pinned and planned out, and had a scheduled pickup date. More importantly, he examined the garments carefully and reassured me that they were worth fixing. Two weeks later, the suits were ready to be picked up - when I arrived, they were both ready for me, I tried them on and was overjoyed. He got everything right. I got a winter coat online and I thought it looked too big around the waist. I consulted my friends, some said yes, some said no, so I took it in to Andy's. He said it was a little big but that tailoring wasn't necessary if I didn't mind it, which I appreciated because it was obvious that he wasn't just after money. However, I did want a slimmer silhouette so I asked him to tailor it. The way the coat was made he suggested a center seam down the back. He estimated $60 and told me to come back exactly one week later. It was ready a couple days early and it only ended up costing $35. The seam perfectly matches the original seams on the coat and you can't tell at all. read more

Yesterday I picked up a rather expensive Hickey Freeman suit after Andy has completed the work. He took in some excess cloth from the jacket waist and let out the trouser hem about a half inch. He also rectified the rippling problems at the shoulders. The result was a PERFECT FIT suit, not only it looks great but also very comfortable. I took the suit to Andy's new shop at 211 Sutter Street Suite 500 on 09/08. Andy first told me that the suit will be ready by 09/20, and in actuality it became ready on 09/25 which was just fine by me. I don't mind waiting for as long as the work takes, when the result/quality of work is this great. I would ask Andy to do more complicated alteration jobs for sure, with a 100% confidence in him. read more

Went to the shop since i needed a bunch of jeans shortened. Walked in around 5:15 Mr. Gorges helped me right away he is very patient and does everything to your liking and gives suggestions. Took about 9 days for 5 pairs of jeans and the price wasn't that bad. Ill be going back to this shop from now on thats forsure. While he didn't have the equipment to work on such heavy leather, I experienced polite professional service, and was referred to a shop that was ultimately able to help me. Positives: 1) Fast service! I dropped my bridesmaid's dress off and it was ready after a week! 2) Cheap service! They took my dress in, took the hem up, and reattached a clasp and it was $55. 3) Cute guy works there. Negatives: 1) No AC in the place so I was burning up putting on my overly heavy dress! 2) Weird location. It is in a office building that is going through construction so it is weird to get to...especially on weekends! 3) Cute guy works there...yes, this is a positive and negative because it is nice that he is cute, but at the same time it is embarrassing because I am hot and sweaty and half in my dress. Not a cute sight! I would definitely go here again...especially considering that my mind was elsewhere when I picked up my dress and I forgot to tip them...so I will definitely have to bring something back to get altered! read more

Based on the wonderful reviews (special shout out to Dale K. for his specific comments regarding mens' shirts!), my bf and I brought a few Robert Graham shirts to Andy for alterations. These are vivid, complex prints, and he did a fantastic job. The shirts needed to be taken in, both in the body and sleeves, and they now fit as though they were custom made. alright, realizing that finding an ideal tailor out of potential hundreds was an impossible goal, i basically threw caution to the wind and put my trust in these two prior reviews. i brought a huge pile of clothing - slacks, dresses, blouses, jacket - to andy with high hopes. after spending some time describing what i wanted and with him pinning and taking measurements, i must say the results were satisfying. what was important to me was that a tailor would understand lines, cuts, contours, and style. my slacks came back perfect - one pair with the seat nipped in a bit to embrace my rear end. the lengths were perfect. the blouses were adjusted, brought in, some implemented with darts. all in all, he did a great job. i'm a cheap bastard, so i would say that the pricing could be lower, but it's not unfair or unreasonable (~$15 hemming). he's a very sweet, patient, understanding, professional tailor. perfectly nice. his "atelier" is nice and cozy, located in a fancy office buildling. Contrary to the description of this place, this is a menswear place. I just went up to ask if I could get my bathing suit top taken in and I wasn't even given an answer. I had to ask the leading question after being stared at by the tailor and his customer: "Is this more of a men's only tailoring place?" and he replied that is was. I'll keep this short and to the point: Took 2 suits to get sleeves and pant legs altered. Both sleeves and pant legs were too short on both suits (took them back - Round 1) Got them back; this time, one set of sleeves and pant legs still short (took back Rd 2) Got them back. 1 mo later, I noticed pant legs were wrinkling due to poor stitching. Being tired of going back, this time, I asked for my money back for the pant legs. No apologies of any kind nor any sign of remorse whatsoever. I took it to another tailor who examined the pant legs. She informed me that there were vertical slits on both pant legs --- causing the wrinkling effect --- something that should never have been done. She was puzzled why those slits were there. I'll alter my own clothes before I go back to this place. read more

I'll admit I was surprised to see Andreas already had a review - I thought he was my hidden gem - but I'm thrilled for him, because he really deserves those five stars. If you need a tailor, he's the guy to go to. He does an excellent job - he remade pants for me that were too large, and now they are one of my favorite pair. The friend who originally recommended him to me entrusted him with her wedding dress alterations - and that's saying something. Andy has made two suits for me, altered nearly all my shirts, pants, and coats, and done some beautiful work on my wife's dresses, from work wear to very dressy. I wouldn't trust my clothes to anyone else. He and Andreas, his son, are pleasant guys, and take the time to figure out what you are looking for, pointing out potential problem areas if they exist so that there won't be any surprises - I've found that Andy's skills tend to make the results even better than you think they'll be. I don't understand the (few) negative posts herein; again, my wife trusts Andy with her most expensive clothes and has never been disappointed. I brought a pair of Calvin Klein jeans for hemming. I asked him if he keep the original bottom hem with the original stitching rather than cutting from the bottom and re-stitching it. At $20 for hemming a pair of jeans, I assumed he'd be able to do this. When I got it back, he did keep the bottom edge of the jeans - however, he redid the stitching rather than keeping the original stitching! He should have cut the unnecessary material from the middle and then attach it back to the bottom of the jeans keeping the original stitching. Now it looks obvious as if these jeans have been tailored. A good tailor is able to keep the bottom hem and original stitching so that it doesn't look like it's been altered. Terrible job. Never again. He overcharges and does a shoddy job. Don't go here. read more

Extraordinary tailor who is well deserving of your business. I've been going to Andy for over five years now and am happy to see his business grow into a family affair. I've needed regular tailoring jobs for pants, jackets, shirts and suits. Andy is always there to help you out, gives you his honest opinion, and does it with a great attitude. Custom shirts from Andy are well made and long lasting. They're actually quite a value proposition when I consider that I used to buy 2-3 poorly fitting off the rack shirts and maybe enjoy wearing one of them. Needless to say, my closet is now full of well fitting shirts thanks to Andy. I've also splurged and gotten a custom suit made from Andy for my wedding. I've never felt so confident in a garment before. The experience of watching the suit come together was also really fun. After exchanging over the phone, I came to get a quote for potential alterations on a suit jacket and check custom-made shirts. Place is small and messy but nice welcome greetings. It was busy with 2 other people. I waited a bit - fine. But when my turn came, Andreas didn't spend much time with me (2-3 mins) and was too eager to sell his services. And then after I started to check fabrics for shirts he disappeared for 10 minutes. There were lots of people coming in and out so I guess business is doing well but if you dont feel like providing good customer service, then you won't have my business. read more

i may have developed a fashionista sense, but helas was not bestowed the full bosom that some wonderful dresses are made for. thanks to many favorable yelp reviews, i met andreas gorges! hidden away in an office building downtown, his location is PERFECT for those who cannot sneak out of work early. i thought to myself that i was paying for the location and workmanship, and so that $40 to take in the bust of a dress was worth it. (i have another tailor waaaay out in the Mission who will do it for half, but she's... waaaaaay out in the Mission). his shop is very typical of a tailor. reams of fabric strewn everywhere. tailor himself hidden behind hanging clothes. a haphazard mirror hangs against a wall to house a spacious dressing room. do not be alarmed, after my first time changing, i felt comfortable in his presence and the shop's! you have ample room to move around and check out your every angle in the dressing room, and can take your very sweet time. his work was seamless - literally. i could not even tell that my dress had been altered one bit, and this was on a dress with very sparkly and relatively thin fabric! for the convenience, workmanship, and professionalism - i will be back with my next dress or two! -- and my bosom thanks you! read more

Andreas is a pleasure to work with. He is the best replacement when you're mom is no longer within a 25 mile drive. Love my newly hemmed pants, taken-in blouses and shortened straps. Andreas offers to fix a job, if after wearing it, you realize it doesn't fit as perfectly as first thought. Here is the deal with Andy. As many have noted, he is a superb tailor. However he suffers from his own success - basically he is so busy that quality and finishing orders on time, does sometimes take a hit. I've been to his office a number of times, and he does have an assistant sewing away in the back. I suspect this person takes care of the more mundane alterations - and from experience the quality here can sometimes be lacking. My wife had a pair of pants taken up - when she tried them on, one leg hem was fractionally longer than the other. Andy fixed them while we went back out shopping. I also had a pair of trousers taken up - the machine stitch line was a good 4 inches above the hem and very noticeable. Andy fixed them by hand-sewing the hem while I ran some errands. Perfect workmanship. Both times Andy was so sincerely apologetic and willing to fix the issue on the spot that it wasn't a big deal for us. But now for the good part - and there's lots that's good. I also was measured up for three custom tailored shirts and the craftsmanship is fabulous. Basically I brought in a slim-fit shirt that I liked the shape of, and he replicated it for me, but custom measured to my size. The price was roughly the same as a shirt from a high end boutique but the quality of the stitching far better, and of course, custom tailored with the material, collar, and color that I chose. He also monogrammed them for me. Perfect. Andy's also great to work with - he will explain why he's going to do something a certain way and not a different way that you might have suggested, do it in a professional way, and is always very friendly and pleasant. So if you have a simple mundane alteration - just want your jeans or sleeves taken up an inch or two - there are plenty of places that can do just as good a job, and probably turn it around faster because Andy seems to have too much business - until the time when he finds a suitably talented assistant(s) or partner to help him scale the business. Maybe he has already. However if you need a garment custom tailored, or have a complex/tricky alteration made, and have time on your side, then Andy is your man; he can make any garment look fabulous on your personal shape and size. read more
