He said no problem and he met up with our caretaker and fixed the issue in a flash, saving us from having to come right home. Just today, his guys Lance and Josh came to the house to troubleshoot a leak in the basement to find it was coming from a bidet toilet on the floor above it. Complicated? Yes. But not so much that these experts coudn't solve the issue and fix us right up in short order. Obviously, we can enthusiastically recommend Sound Plumbing and congratulate our wisdom in finding such a great resource, not only competent but trustworthy and reliable. That's worth a bundle!

They managed to identify all the issues and get them repaired that same day. After quoting me they even found an additional issue that they corrected without increasing the quote. A lot of history about it. It's an important part of Rogers Park and recognizable for the big clock with the wrenches. This business has been around over 100 years. Pretty impressive. While there's lots of the typical products like nuts and bolts, there's also the power tool and equipment rentals. If needing something like that and you aren't planning on using it again after that then this is where to go. The store can be hard to find things but the staff is friendly and helpful. For a locally owned hardware store it has pretty good finds. It's located at the intersection in the name of course so that helps a lot. There's all the usual household items as well as power equipment and rentals.

The slogans and jingles are memorable, and all is good and fine until you need to visit one. Let me guess, it goes something like this: You walk in looking for an item and an associate who can help you. You see someone in paint, but know they can't leave their post, so you continue looking. Aha! A person! Oh wait, that's a cardboard cutout. (This actually happened to me recently at a big box.) Finally, you find someone, and they tell you where to find the item in question. Only, the entire endeavor took way too long, meanwhile, the house is a mess while you're gallivanting the aisles. Enter Clark Devon Hardware. As soon as you walk in, you are greeted and offered assistance. Even if you are just browsing, others will ask you along the way. If you do ask for help, you will either be taken to the item or shown to a person who can help (as in, 'ask this person right over here,' who sees and waves). The team at Clark Devon is knowledgeable, kind, and no nonsense. They know you have things to do and places to be. They will be happy to help you and send you on your merry way. Clark Devon may not be the prettiest hardware store, and perhaps the big boxes may even have slightly cheaper prices (this is unconfirmed). However, it is my go-to for all hardware and home improvement needs, not only out of a desire to support a locally owned business, but because customer service counts for something too. If I am to offer one smidgen of feedback, it's that I wish they were open until later in the evening. For sometimes you come back from work and discover the closet rod has snapped in two, and you need parts to replace and fix.

Long Story: I called a half dozen companies on a Sunday when I found water surging out of one of my laundry room drains. I was given lead times and soft commitments of 12-24 hours by everyone until Charlie. He helped me troubleshot right then and there, which is a level of care that you will not get from a larger company. We spent 20 minutes troubleshooting my system over the phone before determining that he needed to come out. He even suggested a temporary solution I could implement myself to prevent additional water in the area until his arrival; it worked. Once onsite, he was able to diagnose a complex issue (that was entirely behind the wall) quickly. We discussed the pro/cons of several solutions and he was able estimate the cost of the repair on the spot. Doing my own research after the fact, the price was very fair. During the repair, Charlie was polite , professional, hard working, and a pleasure to have doing work in my home. I would highly recommend him to those in need of plumbing, sewage, or heating solutions.

He was recommended to me and I first called him to fix my kitchen sink and replace the leaking faucet. I called on a Sunday, he came out Monday on time and was done in under an hour for a reasonable rate. The next night, Chicago had some torrential rains that caused us to get sewer water and actual solid sewage in the basement. I called him and he came out the next day. He actually said he could come that night but I wasn't going to be home till late. He rodded the main line and catch basin and everything was flowing just fine when he left. That same evening we had another flash flood, and the basement started backing up again (infuriating)...We called and he came back out at 10 o' clock at night on his way back from another job and did not charge because he had just been there! He flushed everything back out the main line and we have not had a problem since. It is very reassuring to deal with someone who is so responsive, and stands by his work. He calls back quickly, he's flexible, will come out evenings and weekends, and he's honest. You can hire him knowing that he's not going to screw you, even if he has to come back out if something goes wrong. Another thing that is good to know for anyone who is looking at major, expensive plumbing repairs (like install new copper lines for X thousands of dollars...) he can take a credit card for big jobs. I have already recommended him to several co-workers.

In my case, a faulty water heater needing to be replaced. The Good: incredibly responsive, tried to troubleshoot over the phone and worked to visit the immediate next day. The (Real) Bad: they price gouged me in a time of peril. Unacceptable. Knowing I was up against the ropes, they charged me what was nearly 3.5 times a normal charge for a water heater replacement! I asked for them to be more accommodating on the quote but came back with 'nothing we can do'. I guess they assumed I'd pay that exorbinant price. I didn't. I got quotes from two other responsive plumbers which proved Plumbing Department was attempting to gouge me. I'm glad I went elsewhere. It's a shame they have such speedy, friendly initial support, but followed it with egregious quotes. Hope they can do better in the future. UPDATE: spoke with owner, Jeff, to discuss the experience. To provide further details underscoring the notable pricepoint disparity: Plumbing Department - install Bradford White water heater with licensed, bonded and insured company Other Plumber Quotes at 3-3.5x less - install a Rheems Performance water heater from licensed, bonded, and insured company. I have no qualms with how Jeff chooses to operate and appreciated their initial support, but found the pricepoints for the install, at a moment of peril, arresting and glad I didn't settle with what was clearly an elevated pricepoint. I'm only sharing my experience and the notable pricepoint disparity.

We were putting our condo on the market, and previously were told that in order to fix a non-functioning shower we would have to open up the tiled wall. Because of the can of worms that opens up, we didn't want to do that and were planning on taking our chances with the real estate market. My sister-in-law referred us to J&A, and, since we didn't have anything to lose, we though we'd give them a call. I called on a weekday afternoon, and less than 24 hours after my initial call Jason was at our condo, had diagnosed the problem, and was working on the special order for the replacement parts. Due to the age and physical structure of the bathroom, it was a really tough job, but everything was like new when they were done, the work was done in a very timely manner, and they did the job without having to tear apart anything in the bathroom! I was really, really happy with the level and quality of service, and J&A are going to be my go-to for all my future plumbing needs.
