Good sushi. Andy seems like an eclectic character with a vibrant personality. I had the spicy tuna with kiwi and the dynamite roll (I think that was what it was called). They were both good. It was a little pricey for what I got, so I don't know if I'm drawn to return again and again to a place that is basically just a simple food stand where there could be a bit of a wait since it is a one man operation. The selection of rolls and sashimi is good and portions are very generous for the price. Make sure to check out the specials board. His salmon mango specialty roll is one of my favorites. His sushi stand is open daily but be prepared to wait 15-20 min for your food as he gets super busy at times. This is a take out only place. Can't say it was the best sushi I've ever had, but it was probably the best sushi I've had from a supermarket, if that's saying anything. Chef was charming and answered all our questions (i.e. yes he serves soft drinks & yes there is seating on the top floor of wholeys). Everything was fresh and made to order and I liked that he added some seaweed salad to our order. I was confused by the mint leaf that we found in the dynamite roll and the nigiri: it was an unusual take, but glad to see he has a unique point of view when creating his food. Tuna sashimi was a little stringy and toro was very lean, but the other cuts of fish were fine. All in all, i think Andy's roll was my favorite of the bunch. Entertaining sushi place in the front of a fishmarket! The sushi chef is a very goofy, getting food from him is like going to a show. Very very entertaining! Which, I think, is very reminiscent of actual Japanese street food and how getting food there is all about getting to know the chef and see them do their work and interact. So yes, he was very kind. He even let us try a cut of fish before buying, just to really make sure we liked it. My only confusion with the sashimi we got was that the toro was unlike any toro I have ever had. It tasted more like maguro to me. So I don't know if that's him trying to sell maguro at a higher price or if my tastebuds are just not well equipped to distinguish between cuts of tuna. As far as I can tell, everything is placed in to go boxes. Our rolls to go got messed up, whoops! So they actually looked a lot prettier at first. In the photo I have they have already been jostled. First of all, I wholeheartedly believe this place deserves a SOLID 3.5 stars. I would bump it up to four, however the rice serving is too large for the nigiri and the quality of the rice is not great and the rice is also a bit mushy. I will give him the benefit of the doubt considering I arrived 30 minutes before the market closed but it also could have been seasoned a lot more. The quality of the fish is great! The cuts of the fish were quite generous. The only thing that really got to me was the rice. I had a small conversation with Andy as he was preparing my order, and he appears to love his job and business. He seems to have an established clientele that is pretty loyal to him. Honestly, we need more places like Andy's sushi especially in a setting where it is a to go sushi joint in a supermarket. It reminded me a bit of a few places back home in Japan. It really pains me to do this, because Andy himself is such a cool and friendly dude, but after eating at Penn Ave Fish Company for so long...I just can't bring myself to get his sushi anymore. It's... just... not that good. It all snapped into place for me one day recently. The sushi rolls he makes are massive, but the taste just isn't there. He's rushing to make them so fast that as soon as you put your chopsticks around them they completely fall apart. And the most important part, the fish, doesn't seem all that fresh. Definitely not as fresh as Penn Ave., which is weird considering he "lives" in a fresh fish mecca. But the thing I think I've really grown to hate that weird brown sauce he puts on everything. Yuck! I just can't stand it! I know I can ask to have it off, but as soon as I seem to remember, it's on there in a flash. I know it may be cheap and it may be fast, but to me it's just not worth it. It's the rice that makes the sushi. Bad rice makes bad sushi and here it was just bad. Sorry, not sorry... First, let me say that I can be a bit of a hand washing freak, but for good reason. I've seen the bacteria that grows from door knobs, cash and elevator buttons and would prefer not to consume any of that. Anyone handling cash and preparing food needs to wash their hands between EVERY transaction which is something Andy did not do. I know he gets busy and he's a sweet guy but even he needs to follow one of the basic rules of food prep. Now, to the sushi...I went for a basic salmon roll and chose a shrimp roll as my second selection. The fish was just okay. I mean I guess I expected to really be wowed since I was in Robert Wholey's "house" but I wasn't. The rice was mushy, not sticky, and it didn't hold together. I like my rolls tight! I want the flavors to explode in my mouth like POW...yeah, that's it...that's how I like it. fish is about as fresh as you will find in Pittbsurgh. Andy makes waiting in line a joy. Very generous portion sizes, and unbelievable value (2 large pieces of toro for $5 is unheard of! Not to mention I was given a third 1 at no additional cost) The presentation itself leaves something to be desired, not the most skilled with a knife, but the guy has to pump them out fast enough to keep the line moving. - and lets be honest, you're not going to a stand in wholeys for presentation. His special sauce is tasty, some sort of sirracha-esq conccoction, but make sure you make note of it if you don't want this on your fish. Uses a bit too much rice for my liking on the nigiri pieces, I think he could use about half as much. Though I understand he is located next to a primantis, and this is pittsburgh. Fantastic value, great guy. Will return. oh, and I really mean he's a great guy beyond the generosity with the fish. I passed by Andy's several times while shopping at Wholey's and did not realize this is the place where everyone raves about the sushi chef! I figured sushi shops inside markets would be subpar because there are so many examples of that (Whole Foods, HEB, Wegmans). This spot is different for many reasons: 1) fresh fish from Wholey 2) no pre-packaged sushi 3) high energy sushi chef Andy 4) fair priced and delicious sushi We got 4 rolls for lunch and that was way plenty of food. I really liked the spicy tuna kiwi roll (special). It's a mouthful but the kiwi is balanced out by the shiso leaf very well. I also like that he added two types of tuna in the roll (regular and albacore). My boyfriend liked the salmon mango roll but I thought the sauce was too sweet and overwhelming. The dynamic roll was good, full of fresh raw fish. I also asked Andy to make a squid roll with shiso leaf (my new obsession) but he forgot the shiso! Wholey has an upstairs with plenty of seating. But when the weather is nice, I wouldn't mind getting it to go and head down to point state park for some sushi picnic. I'm really impressed with the amount of fish Andy gives in each roll. I went with the Sushi lunch special which gives you a nice mix of salmon, tuna, and shrimp. The portion is great, fresh fish is a dream and the presentation is a plus.
