Everything had the perfect amount of spice ( I love spicy and medium heat was perfect for me on both of the spicy dishes I ordered) . We had the hamachi carpaccio, tum yum soup, the salmon belly nigiri special, ramen and pad kea mao. I can't even pick a favorite. I know I'm already regretting not ordering another tum yum soup to to-go though! Everything was absolutely perfect. Finally tried mango sticky rice last night through DoorDash, and I'm so glad I did! The sticky rice was topped with fresh, perfectly ripe mango, sesame seeds and a sweet sauce. The slight tanginess of the mango was the perfect contrast to the sweetness of the rice. I offered my boyfriend a bite but ended up eating the rest by myself cause it was that good! Usually a bit leery of sushi restos mixed in with other cuisines but Itamae did deliver a good meal! Service was friendly and our food arrived at a decent time. Casual vibes, nothing fancy and more like a hole in the wall but comfortable. I took 1 star was because The resto didn't have their AC on, which made it uncomfortable on a hot 92 degree summer day. They did try to compensate by adding a window fan for the whole restaurant. Nothing was said and nothing else was offered for that issue. The price point for sushi was also pretty high. $9 for regular sushi rolls like tuna, salmon, California, spicy tuna.. usually prices are about $5.50-$7 in the New Jersey/New York area. Small unassuming place that serves both Thai cuisine and sushi. We went the Thai route and tried the app sampler. They were fried fresh and had tasty dipping sauces. The curries were tasty, although the chicken in the Panang curry tasted old and dry. The pad se ew was good, but a tad sweet. Would try it again to also try the sushi. We have gotten takeout here quite a few times now. Their miso soup is top notch, full of flavor. I also really like their red curry, but I will admit some issues I have with it: not nearly enough pieces of chicken when you order it with chicken, way too many bamboo shoots, and not enough rice to eat with the large portion of sauce/soup/gravy (whatever you call it) that they give you. My husband recently got the Pad see ew, and that portion was a bit underwhelming for a dinner size. Overall, I think the flavors are there and with a little bit of tweaking, it would be even better. I have never been inside to eat so I can't speak to that experience. I did have to call to ask a question and they were helpful. read more

Walking in, it seems to be set up more for "to go" as you are met with the sushi counter immediately on entering. The fish smell is a little strong but it is a sushi place and you get to watch them make it. Clean. Apps were great. Everything else was sweet and didn't have much spice. Usually you can select a spice level, but that option was not available. I had tofu in my curry which was cooked well and I enjoyed it. My friend had the same curry with chicken. We could have gone without the chicken and just picked it out of the dish. The pad see ew was okay but lacked flavor. Shrimp was cooked well. I was once again craving sushi last night so we ordered what is supposedly one of the top rate sushi places in pittsburgh. I got the salmon poke bowl and it was very very good. I was also very happy with the edamame which came with a delicious spicy garlic sauce and the side of egg fried rice was amazing. Went here recently with some friends for dinner and we enjoyed our evening! Our server was friendly and offered us helpful suggestions on the menu. We ended up starting off with their sampler, which I definitely recommend - every single bite was yummy and it was the perfect amount of food to start off with for 2-3 people! For mains, we ended up ordering one of their sushi boat combos. I liked the mix of rolls, nigiri, and sashimi - it was the perfect amount of each type of sushi! Everything was fresh and carefully prepared, with the yellowtail and ikura being my favorite fish of the lot. Omg I'm so glad I ordered from them under the newer name as that is how long I haven't ordered from this place. I really want to try this sweet potato curry that they offer and that will be on my next pickup. I got the yellow fish poke bowl which was really fresh, I wish there was more fish to price you're paying as other poke bowl places offers 2-3 scoops for the price you get for 1 scoop at this place. That is probably my only setback with their poke bowls but I really liked everything else. Also, I ordered the Thai donuts which I still don't know if I liked the white icing over the chocolate or the chocolate over the white. I think I was more into the chocolate but they both are overly sweet so too much made me not like it. I know it's not gluten free but I put my allergy (thankfully I am not celiac) to the side and tried them. They are so fresh and tasty! Def worth to try! Service was lovely, they do acknowledge you. Really impressive. This is a relatively small space, but it's nicely done and they seem to really care about putting out a high quality experience. We ordered takeout, with a blend of both Thai dishes and Japanese/Hawaiian dishes. At first, that seemed like an odd pairing, but it seems to line up with the background and experiences of the owners. In terms of the actual food, everything was extremely well packaged. The poke bowl was particularly inspired with some amount of care put into its overall composition and presentation. The Thai basil stir fry was good. The Penang curry was excellent, but could have used a few more vegetables (mostly my own personal preference). The papaya salad and ginger salad were good, but could have been just a little more flavor forward. All told, this was a nice place tucked into a quiet pocket of the South Hills with good food and owners who really want to turn out a high quality product. Well worth checking out. read more

Great sushi lunch the other day. Popped in as I decided to explore Mt Lebanon. It's a teeny hole in the wall in the middle of a neighborhood. Love the perky paint colors on the exterior. I was greeted with a cheery hello by the 2 sushi chefs. I was the only one there. Service was friendly and efficient. I got hot jasmine tea which was delivered in a cute pink pot. My sashimi bento box popped out quickly, even though there seemed to be several delivery orders coming in. The fish was super fresh and flavorful. The salmon silky, the tuna tender, the yellowtail melt-in-your mouth yummy. I chose the spicy tuna for my roll and loved it. Really good spice. The mini-seaweed salad was good, as was the regular little house salad. Always love that ginger dressing. The little fried dumpling was really tasty. I'll definitely be back. Very good new Thai place. Sad to hear that the old spot closed down. But, this is a stellar place. They have so many options. Everything from sushi, to classic Thai, to poke bowls, curries, and more. It's awesome, and it seems they do it all well. I decided to try their pad see ew with tofu and their Thai donuts. The pad see ew was very good. They had an adequate amount of flavorful sauce, with a hint of what seems like ginger in it. The vegetables were fresh. Noodles were cooked well. Portion was pretty good, but not huge. Good amount of tofu, but not much egg. I'd still recommend it! Now, the Thai donuts were insanely good. The portion is absolutely huge and you could definitely share these. The donuts are perfectly fried and come in 2 shapes. Crispy outside, soft inside. The condensed milk goes perfectly with them, nice and sweet. They also had a few strawberries and chocolate sauce on the side. All in all, this is a great spot. The pad see ew was very good and the Thai donuts were exceptional. We've dined here twice before and service was always great. But after our recent experience, we are never returning to this restaurant. My family and I arrived for dinner and all tables were full. They offered seating at the sushi bar but we declined bec it would be unsafe for our toddler to sit in the stool chair. The female host/waitress agreed to let us wait for a table to become available but another waiter who was a younger male with glasses (likely a new hire bec we've never seen before) approached us very rudely and insisted we sit at the sushi bar. Even after pointing out to him that we had our toddler dining with us, his attitude became even nastier. We walked out feeling so confused about the treatment. This is by far the best sushi in Pittsburgh. That is not hyperbole. The chef has studied for 15 years in Naples, FL and moved his family to PGH to have his own place. He is the sushi chef and his wife is the Thai chef. Please check out the menu and their website and visit! They have only been open a week at the time of this post and are already getting a loyal following. Lunch menu is also an option. Hitchhiker Brewing is across the street and this place is BYOB. Hitchhiker also allows Itamae food at their establishment. The place feels like something you'd find in San Francisco or Seattle. Great ambiance! read more

We drove up from Washington, PA to try this place out since the reviews have been so good. 3 of my favorite things are Red Curry, Mongolian Beef & GOOD sushi. I haven't been able to find a new favorite sushi roll that I crave since we moved up from Virginia 3 years ago. I've desperately missed my old VA sushi spot. Itamae delivered! We ordered the Itamae Platter as an appetizer. Qty 2 of Spring Roll, Gyoza, Shumai, & Crab Rangoon. Everything was good but my husband & I didn't care for the addition of yellow curry to the crab Rangoon. My husband ordered the won ton soup. The broth barely had any seasoning or flavor. I'm one of those people that HATE cilantro & I think that was the flavor that put me off. My husband likes cilantro but still said it wasn't a good wonton soup. He added soy sauce to give it more flavor but still said the wontons weren't very flavorful either. We ordered the Red Dragon roll & Yummy Yummy roll. Both were outstanding. The sushi chef is VERY talented. I asked for a little more eel sauce for my Yummy Yummy roll. Just a personal preference. I also ordered the Mongolian Beef & Shrimp red curry to go for dinner later that day. Tried both of them as soon as I got home. Mongolian beef sauce was a little looser than I anticipated but that could be because it was in a container & then Saran wrapped for a couple of hours while we ran our errands. It has a really good taste though. Just wanted the sauce to be a little more tacky. The shrimp red curry is divine! I ordered it mild and it had just the right amount of heat for me. It had that delicious buttery backdrop I love in a good red curry. We have enjoyed the pad Thai, blue crab fried rice, yakisoba and pad see ew, among other dishes, and all were excellent. The interior of the restaurant is spotless and often full. Worthy of note to those who love Thai or Japanese food. Pad see ew was generous portion and was wonderful - subtle hints of ginger and chicken was tender. There were lots of veges and chewy noodles to soak up that rich, delicious sauce. The salad with ginger citrus sesame dressing was not too gingery and zingy. I could put that on anything... So good - I decided to get take out - sushi, green curry and yakisoba. The green curry was well balanced between the sweet coconut, chili and umami and it's a beautiful color. The yakisoba was delightful. Again every ingredient fresh and flavorful. Get the itamae roll!! Love the crab with tempura flakes and spicy mayo! The seating is sensible and comfortable with the sushi bar in front. The service was excellent - friendly and considerate.
