I've always enjoyed visiting Anette's Chocolate at Oxbow Public Market in Napa and have received great service in the past, which made this experience especially disappointing. This weekend, my cousin brought my aunt, who loves chocolate, into the shop. They stood by the display and attempted to ask questions about the chocolates. The employee repeatedly responded from behind the register that she "couldn't hear them" and refused to walk over to assist. Feeling unwelcome, they decided to leave. When they told me what had happened, I went over to the counter to understand what was going on. There were no customers waiting, and I calmly explained that my family simply wanted help purchasing chocolate. I asked if she would be willing to apologize and rectify the situation so my aunt and cousin could continue shopping. Instead, she repeatedly said she didn't want "anything hostile" and wasn't looking for "problems," even though the conversation remained calm and respectful. When I asked to speak with the manager or owner, she picked up the phone and offered for me to speak with someone. When I asked if it was the manager or owner, she said she was calling security. I was stunned. At no point was anyone aggressive or disrespectful. We simply wanted service. She then pointed to the Pride pins on her apron and shared that she had been bullied by others because of them. I made it clear that no one in my family was bullying her and that we only wanted assistance buying chocolate. I've spent many weekends in Napa and love Oxbow Public Market. This interaction was completely out of character with the hospitality I've come to expect there. Calling security on customers who are politely asking for service and requesting to speak with a manager was unwarranted and deeply disappointing. I sincerely hope ownership addresses this, because no customer should leave feeling unwelcome when they simply came in to buy chocolate. read more

Stopped by Anette's Chocolate and was very impressed by their shop! They have a wide variety of artisanal chocolates that would be great for indulging a sweet tooth or as a nice gift. Flavors ranged from seasonal treats, like candy corn chocolate bark, to classic boxes. They also had ice cream that they apparently make in house, with maybe a dozen flavors available. I tried the blueberry cheesecake on a cone, and have to say I was impressed! Came for the hot chocolate after dinner! Specifically the Euro dark hot chocolate. It was peeerrrfeeccttt. We were too full for ice cream so we ordered a 16 oz hot chocolate to share. We also ordered a couple pieces of dark chocolate. ****Tip- if you are not ordering ice cream- ask if you can jump the line to order your hot chocolate and or chocolate purchases. We waited in line half way up then asked all the other employees standing around not doing anything if we could jump the line to order our drink and chocolate candy. The flavors were like the names and had very pronounced flavors.
