Came here on a Monday, and glad we walked in. Angelou's Mexican Grill is a Latin food cuisine located in Downtown San Jose. It is around the drinking scene, and one to add to the list if happening to be bar hopping. For my meal, I was excited to get the burrito. Gotta love California style when they incorporate fries in. I was pleasantly surprised by the portion size and knew I was going to have to take the rest back with me. It is giant and a lot for one sitting. The size is impressive compared to the other ones I have tried locally so far. Comes with both green and orange sauce. We also got drinks. Mine was the Frida Flight so it came in three different flavors. I recommend that for those interested in trying multiple or drinking lightly. My friend got theirs and it was a huge amount. She didn't expect it so couldn't finish it in one sitting. But definitely amazing if someone is trying to get their moneys worth or a heavy weight. Staff is friendly. I ordered a super burrito with al pastor. So freaking good. Not much grease or oil from the meat was dripping from the burrito, which was a good sign. Burrito integrity was strongly held throughout the meal. I wasn't picking up burrito droppings and shoving them down my food hole. I'm quite impressed. Both orange and green sauces was very tasty. Orange had a good kick to it but the heat is a creeper. Don't worry, it's tolerable. The green was a refreshing sauce you would take a break with to offset the savory orange sauce. When it comes to orange and green sauces at a Mexican restaurant, there's usually one sauce that would outshine the others. Not at Angelou's, they're both very good! We had a nice lunch here. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. I like that they had several choices of vegetarian meals. I ordered the super veggie burrito with a side of beans and a side of sour cream (because I like a lot of sour cream). My burrito tasted pretty good, but if it included cheese & sour cream inside as advertised on the menu, I could not taste either one. My husband had the California burrito and ordered sides of rice and beans. The food was good; it tasted like they use good quality ingredients. We used the parking garage across the street. The portion size is pretty good. The two meals came with decent-tasting chips, but no salsa was provided. read more

My stop at Angelou's Mexican Grill was my first place to eat in San Jose. Upon walking in I noticed a very comfortable restaurant with a bar area towards the back. My co-worker and were greeted quickly by our waitress. The menu really looked great, but I went with an old standby that I hadn't had in a long time. I love a Chimichanga. This was a deep-fried regular burrito with sour cream, guacamole, and a side of green salad. My co-worker had the Chile Relleno. This consisted of a Roasted Poblano chile stuffed with cheese topped with sauce and sour cream. Unfortunately, it took an unusually long time to get our food at a restaurant that wasn't that busy. My co-worker getting her food several minutes before mine showed up. If there are two people eating together, bring out the food together. It's not hard to time two items. That being said, all the food tasted great. A couple sauces were served with our meal, and their red sauce added a nice bite to the Chimichanga and the Roasted Poblano chile. Unfortunately, it took nearly an hour to get our check after our waitress took our plates. Overall, the food tasted great, our waitress was friendly, but the service took a long time. Whenever we saw her, she was working hard. I give her credit for that. There appears to be a management or ownership issue here with not having enough employees scheduled. Though I had some pluses and minuses at Angelou's, I would certainly be willing to try this place again as the food tasted great. read more

Came here with some friends after spending some time at Xmas in the park. It's been a while since I've been here last so the location has changed. It's gone from hole in the wall to a more well established sit down restaurant with booths and drinks. We came here with 5 adults and 3 toddlers an a baby and the service was still good. We ordered individually at the register as it was slow, but as other groups started coming in they placed orders directly at the table. Food was delicious but it didn't hit like it used to. The super flour quesadillas were simply cheese and meat with both sour cream and guacamole served on the side. It was a little on the underwhelming side when it came to size . I also order the carne fries, and it came served on a plate. I could see everything as it wasn't buried under a heap of toppings ( that's what I'm used to). Typically these two items elsewhere would've filled me and my wife ip but we left still hungry and wanting more food. Food here is good don't get me wrong, but it just doesn't satisfy like La Vic's or Cali Spartan does. It's also a little more pricey here in comparison to the quantity you receive. Seems like this place could be that it's less greasy than other spots and designed to be more of a sit down restaurant compared to fast food. Court be just my preference and expectations of carnes fries and a super quesadilla being different, Over all I'd still recommend eating at Angelous. Came here for dinner one night and was not impressed. I will say the vibes were cool, they were decorated for Christmas and had some seasonal drinks available. The waitstaff was also very friendly. One of best Mexican meals I've had since San Diego! My friend and I came hungry after work so I wanted to eat everything! I love that they offer a half size of their verde posole. It was the best posole I've ever eaten. Full of body and and flavor! I wished they had the oregano and chilli oil though, but so freaking good! I also ordered a fish taco and the crunchy of fresh meaty fish, fresh slaw and their home made salsa was chef's kiss! So good! My friend ordered a shrimp fajita and everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly! Even the rice and beans were so fragrant. Food was so great I had to order a surf and turf burrito to go for him. Came here during my lunch hour. They used to be on the north side of the same street across E Santa Clara, but the moved down. The inside of the store is pretty dark but we ate outside. Angelou's is a solid lunch spot for me since it's so close to work, and I'm glad they're finally open again after the remodel! My coworkers and I kept checking to see when they'd be back because we missed having this as an easy go-to Mexican food option. The new decor looks great, definitely a nice refresh. I had the carne asada burrito, and it was exactly what I was craving. The meat was flavorful and tender, and the burrito had a good balance of rice, beans, and salsa. The portion size was filling and the tortilla held everything together well because it was HUGE. The salsa added a nice kick, but I wouldn't have minded a ten more. Those salsa containers are tiny. Service was quick, which is perfect for a lunch break. The cashier was really sweet. They always get your food out super fast which is nice when you're in a rush and have a million meetings. Was in downtown at Amazon doing a return and the family wanted lunch. I looked at what was available to near me and this place came up. It was a bit dark on the outside and wasn't sure if it was truly open or not. Walked inside and ordered two tacos, two burritos and two chicken quesadillas. I was not overwhelmed by the food It was just okay. I also ordered the ceviche and it was lacking acidity and salt. It was fine for a plain ceviche but not for that price. Service was okay. My husband insists every time we visit San Jose, we have to have their orange sauce. He would not stop pressing me until we get the damn orange sauce. We went to a Mexican restaurant and they didn't have any orange sauce, so he got pouty. I had to look up another Mexican restaurant, make sure they had the orange sauce, and re-order food here. Here (pictured) he is so happy because of the orange sauce. He ordered a whole bottle of orange sauce to go and was carrying it around in a brown paper bag like a beer. Came here on a Thursday afternoon for lunch after looking up nearby restaurants and I was craving a burrito and I found Angelou's. The place has great decor and it has a real nice vibe. The people were very friendly and it wasn't busy at all which was great for me. I got the asada super burrito and couldn't wait to try it, but I was disappointed. The tortilla was really soft and wasn't crispy at all. Looks like it was rushed even though it wasn't busy at all. The meat was flavorful and delicious, but the soft tortilla didn't make the burrito enjoyable. They do offer orange and green salsa and also there's nice bar set up as well. Overall not a place I'd go out my way to eat at if I'm craving Mexican. read more

Came on a Saturday to dine in during the day and ordered a burrito for a quick bite. It's actually rather a huge restaurant because it has more seating compared to other Mexican restaurants. Since we came in the day, the restaurant only had 3-4 other tables at the table and we were able to be seated quickly. They only had one waitress/cashier working, but I anticipate this restaurant getting busier and louder towards the night. Cali Moco Burrito ($14.25) - 5/5 stars. We only ordered a Cali Moco Burrito but it was great. The fries in the burrito were still crispy, the egg was runny, and the entire burrito was pretty flavorful. I've come here a handful of times as I work in DTSJ. This new location is MUCH nicer than their original location. I can with some coworkers to order lunch to-go on a Monday around noon. I ordered (and paid for) the Beef Enchiladas ($22) with Green Sauce and a Mineragua Sparkling Water ($4). The Enchiladas were kinda pricey in my opinion for Mexican food. Minus two stars for giving me Chicken instead of the Beef I paid for. The presentation is sloppy. The rice and beans were meh and are just filler food. Service is just ok. The cashier isn't the best at giving recommendations/answering questions about the food. They appear to have a full bar so this might be the spot for Happy Hour or dinner. read more

I ordered the chimichanga--a deep-fried burrito--and found it enjoyable, though the pastor was a bit dry. Considering it was deep-fried, this wasn't entirely surprising. We also tried the Cali burrito, which my boyfriend thought was flavorful and one of the better options in the area. They offered two salsas: a green one and an orange one. The orange salsa stood out with its tangy, smoky flavor, which I loved. However, I would've appreciated a red salsa option to cut through some of the richness, though it seems San Jose has a particular fondness for orange salsas. I used to love Angelou's when they were at their original location. Ever since they opened up shop at the new store, my orders never seem to be right. My last order was a Super Veggie Burrito. I only asked for no zucchini and no mushrooms. What I got was a burrito with only rice, and a few bell peppers in it. Who orders only rice & bell pepper burritos?! What happened to the beans, salsa, guacamole, cheese, sour cream, and the extra orange sauce I paid $0.50 to add in it?! Non-existent. Also, I'm not sure why since moving locations...they have been a bit stingy with the sauce. One small sauce container for a burrito that needs at least two. I plan on giving them another try...but...if it goes wrong again...I might have to find another spot to fulfill my orange sauce cravings. read more

I've had better, but definitely had worse. The chicken tasted like boiled canned chicken finished on a flat top making it flavorless and tough. The Al Pastor and Carne Asada also lacked flavor and were dry, although neither tasted parboiled. Overall maybe the sauce would've made them better, but then again the sauce was lacking too. It's been awhile since I've been to Angelou's. They moved to a new location, 78 S. 1st St in downtown, after closing the old place 6-7 months ago. The new location is sooo much better and the restaurant...what an improvement!!! It is bigger, trendier and the staff seems a lot more happy. I am in love with the atmosphere of this restaurant. Great service, not 1 waitress for themself but everyone helping out. Smiles on all of their faces. The food...delicious! I judge Mexican restaurants on their Michelada...some have it with shrimps and some don't. These shrimps were incredibly flavorful and the glass was rimmed perfectly! My chili relleno was so tasty too! Ordered pazole to take home...so eager to taste it since it has been awhile. Totally recommend with place when you in downtown. read more
