We were visiting the area and first went to Poodies. After being ignored when we walked in, the bartender told us we could sit anywhere we could find a place and rolled her eyes. I didn't have a good feeling about how our experience would turn out so we then headed to Angel's where the fabulous Kristen came and said hello within seconds of us sitting down. This place is great, lots of people, open air and plenty of tv screens to watch the game. Kristen was the most excellent server and our food did not disappoint! Nice place loved it actually! Nice stage for music, outdoor seating, play area for the kids, giant legos for them to build with. Inside had many tables and TVs to watch sports on. Well I realized as long as ive been on yelp I still had not reviewed my favorite place to visit in the Hill Country for great food, service, music & of course drinks ! Angels Icehouse is a 100% family friendly establishment with a large playscape for the kids, water bowls & even a menu for the pups. If you live or are visiting the Spicewood area this place should be at the top of your list for a good lunch or dinner. Inside Angels has a large full bar area with plenty of local beers on tap that rotate throughout the year. The walls are covered with eclectic decor (check the bathroom doors out!) & large T.V's usually showing an assortment of current sporting events. On & at the hottest point of the day they will usually close the large garage style doors & kick on the A/C to keep everyone inside comfortable. The outside deck & outdoor seating is great for evenings & Sub 100 degree days.Although they have some high powered fans that turn on to keep the air flowing as well as large oak trees with shade canopies connected throughout the seating area. Along with the playscape to keep the kids entertained they also have the entire area fenced in to keep them contained. If it's your first time visiting make sure to get a photo in front of the huge hill country mural painted by Austins own artist Kerry Awn (Fitzgerald). I would describe the food at Angels as all Texas style pub cuisine with some healthy lightweight Austin style dishes sprinkled throughout the menu. My personal favorite on the menu is the burgers! They come single, double & even triple if you dare try & have assortment of toppings that can be added. If A huge greasy delicious triple burger & hand cut fries is not your style the quinoa salad may be more to your liking, It's a large portion of quinoa served on a plate of greens with a lemon vinaigrette feta cheese, cucumbers, craisons & pine nuts. (its what I get if my wife orders for me). As for dessert you really can't go wrong with any of it, I have no favorites in this department because I equally love them all but they include things like lemon icebox pie, ice cream covered brownie & REAL Creme Brulee. Entertainment, yes Angels has you covered there as well. In addition to the playscape for the kids & T.V.s all over the place they have live music with some great bands on the weekends & most Thursdays I think. Angels never charges a cover so come early most bands start around 7 p.m. & get done around 11 p.m. out of respect for the neighbors in the community that was built just below them just a few years back. Now to the part that makes people absolutely fall in love with this place. The staff, management & ownership of this place is absolutely the best ! I've now lived in the area for 6 years & can say that Angels has become one of my favorite neighbors(nothing against the others except "David S" ;) ). The staff is definitely the soul of this establishment, you will find all types of cool personalities working here and never the robotic type servers I personally can't stand. Individuality is clearly embraced promoted here & you can see the benefits of that in the always smiling & willing to help staff. The owners & management host & donate to many community functions throughout the year.A couple Ive attended include the Hill Country ASPCA's Woof Stock and the St. Baldericks Foundation fundraiser. In closing obviously I'm a huge fan of this place & really think you should consider swinging in & enjoying a nice cold drink & some good food at this gem of a restaurant located just west of Austin. read more

If I could put ZERO stars I would. I was excited to take my family there and when we walked in I have never felt so UNWELCOME! Nobody even looked at us. There was no host or anyone there to greet us . We walked over to a table to seat ourselves and nobody there came by or even paid us any mind. We sat around for about 10 minutes and had no choice, but to leave. As we walked out everyone there, employees included just stared at us like we were unwelcome. I will NEVER go there again and will tell everyone that I know in Austin about Angel's terrible attitude. If you're looking for rude people and NO service then this is your place. I could easily make a meal of the "A little bit of everything" fried starter menu choice - the name says it all: fried mushrooms, fried pickles with Ranch, fried jalapenos... The Chicken Fried Steak is tender as all get out and the gravy is comfort food at its best. In addition to comfort food they serve salads, wraps and Veggie Burgers in addition to regular ones. Up in the hill country on 71, as you get up towards Lake Travis, sits Angel's Icehouse, serving up good food and cold beer. The spacious bar has a comfortable, rustic feel, with big screen TVs for Longhorn games, live music on Fridays, and additionally on Saturdays outside during the spring and summer. They've even got a play area for the kids, so bring the whole family. When I stopped by with some friends with whom I was staying at a lake house, we were enjoying a spring evening out back at the picnic tables, sitting under the lights strung up from the boughs overhead, sipping on cheap cold beer, and reminiscing on our college days back at UT as the smell of the mesquite trees wafted past our noses - that sweet hill country air. The menu boasts home cooked favorites like their mouth-watering quarter-pound hand-rolled burgers with fresh cut fries, or a thick chicken fried steak with cream gravy, as well as pub snacks like fried pickles with chipotle sauce or chips and queso to which they'll add some of their homemade chili. But what caught my eye straightaway was the fish and chips. Really? Up in the hill country? Yep, there it was, with a Tex-Mex twist: Corona beer-battered tilapia, flaky on the inside, crispy on the outside. The exterior fried shell was a little too thick for my taste, but the flavor was still exquisite with a dash of malt vinegar, or dipped in tartar sauce on the side. The "chips" are the same as the "fries" you'll get with other orders, but they're homemade, and still the proper quarter inch square variety that should come with the fried fish. On this side of Lake Travis, in Spicewood, Angel's beckons like a choir. If you want a dive bar, go to Poodie's. A 5-star? Yeah... This place holds a special place in my heart. I, my wife, and our pups always visit this Icehouse after hiking Pace Bend. It has a fantastic vibe, the servers love our dogs (very important), and they actually had Art Car IPA from Saint Arnold, which is my current favorite IPA, on tap. Also, the queso rocks! Finally, the Gliders (actually a couple of burgers cut into pizza-slice-like sections) come with sauteed onions and jalapenos are a must-order. So I was REALLY hungry when I got there after a day at the lake. By the time we got there - I was ready to eat. It is here I will interject that if you don't want fried food - keep on driving. Be prepared and ready for this and you are going to enjoy it. We started with the fried combo platter - mushrooms, okra, shrimp, mini corndogs and mac 'n cheese. Yep, you read right - fried mac 'n cheese! - and it was good! We also got the fried pickles and jalapenos. They were also enjoyable. Since I hadn't met my quota of fried food yet - I got the chicken fried chicken. Thankfully I was not disappointed with my choice. It was delicious. The sides I got were not exciting - corn was ok and the mashed potatoes were real. It satisfied my need for comfort after a relaxing day at the lake! PERFECT DAY! read more

I love Angels ok! I would go in weekly with my daughters and dog for lunch, and always took out of town guests here! The environment is wonderful, the staff is friendly, the owners are great! Back in June, I ordered the same thing I always do... The chicken fried chicken strips. I ate one there and they seemed undercooked. So I ate my fries and decided to take the chicken home and reheat later- make sure they were cooked! My kids had the fried macaroni and loved them, per usual. I finished the chicken fried chicken strips later on at home after a quick reheat. By 2am, I was deathly ill with food poisoning. I was more sick than I have ever been in my entire life. I lost 6 pounds in 24 hours and vomited over 12 times. All I had eaten in the day and a half prior was, the chicken fried chicken strips. I am positive that is what was contaminated/undercooked and caused me to get sick. We seriously love it here, but I've been to terrified to go back since I got sick. NOTHING is good enough to risk feeling that awful ever again. PROS: The fried pickles are great, chicken salad sandwich is good, good burgers... Great patio and fun staff. CONS: the chance of ever being that sick again! read more

Live in Spicewood and have been here more times than I can count so I had to chime in. I gave it a generous 3 because I actually like this place the location and the live music venue. Do I make this a destination to eat dinner? Absolutely NOT. Those who give this place thumbs up for the food need their heads examined. It's a bar not a restaurant and while the beer is cold and the drinks mixed well the food is a total crap shoot (no pun intended). We camped out on Lake Travis for the weekend. On our way back home we stopped by here for some grub. It actually wasn't our first choice (we were looking for some BBQ) but not many places in the area were open during President's Day. Luckily, we found this place :) The things I loved about this place: It has a play ground for the kids and they are dog friendly! They even have a couple items for dogs on the menu! Our waiter was very nice and attentive, food didn't take long to come out soon after ordering. I took away a star because we weren't that amazed by the food. My bf and I ordered the handrolled burgers with fries. I got cheddar, bacon & guacamole on mine, which I thought was good (but I could get that at any burger place).. and my bf wasn't that impressed with his. Sorry, I can't remember what he got. My son enjoyed the hotdog and fries! It kept him off the playground for a good 5 min, but as soon as he was done he ran right back out there lol. Chips and salsa is about as far as I would take it at this place. Maybe some wings. But, whatever you do, don't order a chili dog. It looks about as appetizing as a dirty wet sock. I really wanted to love this place. It seems like its a local hang out. As a matter of fact, I ended up sitting with a local chatting the whole time who goes to this place every week with her kids. I've been wanting to go here for like 4 years now. FINALLY we were out taking pictures at Pace Bend and swung in. The flavor of Angel's is what I hoped it would be. Garage doors open to a nice patio with a stage and playground. Cold beer, great burgers and really good onion rings. I have passed this place 5 million times but because I've never been doing anything right there I've never actually stopped. Low and behold, FINALLY someone suggested we go out there after dinner off Hamilton Pool Rd. I was so excited! The place is a lot smaller inside then expected but lots of places outside and I loved the porch, I think if it was a nice day it would be worth it to go back out and spend the day outside. There was a lot of seating on the inside and the place was packed on a Friday night. There was a fun band playing and everyone was dancing which was equally entertaining. It's obvious the locals utilize this place the most and that is my favorite part about it. I would love to go back and see what interesting conversations come up. I didn't have any food (why I left off a star) and thought the staff could have been a little more attentive since they were mostly talking to each other and watching the band (however they were all really good looking so nice eye candy, I'll give them that). I got a great first impression of this place and definitely look forward to trying it again. read more

Angel's was a bit of hike from SW Austin - 20 minutes are so (which really isn't that bad but I think I'm a little spoiled). We decided to go because of a restaurants.com gift certificates but I'm so glad we did. We are always looking for new places with a playscape for the 5-year old and open spaces for the older kids (there is only so much Waterloo and Doc's a person can take). Angel's has a great set up for inside and outside seating - really nice for nice evening outside. We ordered queso - it's not listed in the appetizers but if you ask for it, they will give it to you - make sure to ask for the supreme. I honestly think it is one of the best queso in Austin. We almost got another one it was so good. I understand that is a big statement - but two of my best friends LOVE queso, so I have tried a lot around town. From there - I had the crab cake wrap, my fiancée had the frito pie and my BFF and her husband had the chicken fried steaks. The crab cake wrap was such a great change of pace compared to most of the usual fare at these types of restaurants. My BFF and her husband loved the chicken fried steak. My fiancé said the frito pie was good, but with all the roasted jalapeños on top - you had better like it SPICY. We will definitely be back - I wish it were a tad closer to SW Austin but 20 minutes really isn't that far for a great place for the family. read more
