To be perfectly honest, my brother took me to Deep Ellum so that we could eat at Pecan Lounge, because the last time he tried to take me there, the line was out the door, and it was decided that it wasn't worth the wait. Unfortunately, the second attempt was no better, because Pecan Lounge thinks it's a museum and is not open on Mondays. We ended up going to Angry Dog, because it was nearby and he also endorsed it as a good place to grab a great burger or hot dog. And in the end, I had a pretty great dining experience regardless of the fact that it wasn't the original plan. From what I gather, Deep Ellum is a pretty trendy hip place that caters to the hipsters of the city as well as a seemingly easy location for those who work in the city to get to, to have some good food. If I'm completely wrong on that assertion, I'm not local and clearly don't know what I'm talking about. Entering Angry Dog, we were seated pretty immediately, despite the fact that it was a pretty prime lunch time on a Monday afternoon. The interior is pretty relaxed and kind of divey, and very much the kind of places that I like dining in. The staff was all very attentive, efficient at explaining the menu and communicating clearly, and the support staff was the epitome of a well-oiled machine, clearing plates and bringing refills like perfect service ninjas, without needing any requests. Because I was told that this place had good burgers, I ordered what was on the menu as "the Burger" which was cooking to order, and served with onions, lettuce, tomato and pickle. This would be the barometer on whether this place was good or not, based on how they could nail a very traditional hamburger. FYI, stuff like cheeses, bacon and other toppings are a la carte, and can quickly increase the cost of your burger real fast, but the basic is still a reasonable $9. Our food came out insanely quickly, which makes me a little skeptical on just how pre-prepared things might be in the kitchen, but I wasn't complaining too much, since I was on somewhat of a schedule on this particular day. Regardless, my concerns were dissuaded real quick upon the first few bites of the burger, and it was a fantastic flavor. The exterior had just the slightest char to it, but the interior was exactly the medium that I had ordered. With grilled red onions, and all the basic fixins, the burger was a great example of a textbook hamburger, and I relished every bite from first to last. Not to go unnoticed, I've never been to a place that had Old Bay seasoning in a shaker at the table, and Angry Dog's fries are good quality on their own, but are even better with a little bit of pepper and Old Bay. Overall, my initial impression is that it's a very good 4-star type of place, but then I think and realize that there was nothing wrong at all with this place at all, and the service was attentive and top-notch. It's like you realize that a place doesn't have to have some sort of crazy gimmick drink or food item to be a five-star, and is just good at all the little things that makes a restaurant truly defined as an excellent place. And Angry Dog had a cool space with a chill, divey atmosphere, top-tier service, and they really nailed a basic hamburger that wasn't expensive and came out lightning quick. The next time my brother takes me to Deep Ellum, I wouldn't be at all sad if we can't go to Pecan Lounge again if it meant getting to visit Angry Dog again, because there might be a bunch of other restaurants I haven't tried, but I don't forget places that offer great service and solid food. read more

Great character! This place slings a big ass burger for about 9 bucks. The building has great character and they are geared up to sell a ton of burgers (and fast). I arrived early in the day about 11:30 AM. The kitchen was busy prepping for lunch rush. By the time I left the place was packed. The burger is just a burger but, big... really big. Some of the best eateries in the world figure out how to do something reasonably well and manage to repeat it over and over again for decades with no degradation. Angry Dog is definitely one such place. They've been around since the early 1990s, and have had an amazing track record of long employee tenures by hospitality standards. The food is honest, simple, and straightforward. The environment is casual but neat, and the servers both affable and attentive. And while Angry Dog won't be showing up on the cover of Bon Appetit anytime soon, it's definitely consistent -- the kind of joint where you know that what you're getting will be solid when you walk through the door. read more

Dropped in for a beer and burger before the Rush concert. Great selection of draft beers and all served nice and cold. I ordered a burger with cheddar cheese, jalapenos, mustard and grilled onions, cooked medium. It was delivered exactly as ordered and was delicious. The bun had been toasted nicely as well. Accompanying french fries were crisp and tasty. An appetizer of fried jalapenos were decent, but not remarkable; they were almost certainly just basic frozen fare. I was debating between ordering the angry dog or the burger since they are both supposed to be one of the "best in dallas." I went with the angry dog since that is the name of the place. Bottom line, tasted like a regular chili dog. Could have probably made a better one at home. I am wondering what the other hot dog competition is out there and perhaps this is the "best" because not that many restaurants have hot dogs on the menu? It was fine, I ate it. After having excellent food at all of our other stops in Dallas, we had high hopes for Angry Dog. The food was decent, but the overall experience was ruined, due to no fault at all of our waiter - he was attentive, and tried his best. The issue was with the people at the bar and the bartender/manager. I had sat down and was watching a football game while we ate dinner. Someone changed the channel without asking if anyone was watching what was currently on it. When I asked to change it back, they said other people were watching it, and if I wanted to watch my game, I had to watch the TV that was at the other end of the restaurant, which was not really an option. Clean, cold, and large sports bar on the east side of Deep Ellum. Been here two years in a row on the Fourth of July and enjoyed cold beer and tasty and savory bar food. The angry dogs are large hot dogs that come saturated in a generous supply of toppings. The classic dog has chili, onions, pickes, mustard, cheddar cheese. I added jalapeños and jack cheese. It is perfect for a hangover alleviation or special occasion. The fries are fresh and salty and damn good . The nachos we ordered were forgotten, but kindly comped. They are super tasty and come loaded in queso , sour cream, and fresh salsa. The bar is long and has many televisions playing various sports. Bartenders are friendly. Prices are cheap. We came here on a Sunday early evening and it was packed. There was not a major sporting event on either. This place is known for their burgers and dogs and I had the burger. It was so simple, and honestly, isn't that visually appealing, but yet so good. The combination of bun and meat and the ratio therein make for a wonderful experience. Some of their appetizers are typical bar food and nothing too special. The server was very friendly and did a great job. Our food did take awhile to come out, and there was no explanation. Being the first time here have heard some good things. First walking in, good scenery inside giving a chill vibe, alone with a bar right when you walk in. Although, all these great things, the seating was a little cluttered closer to the bar, making it harder to seat big parties. Best party size is 1-5 to be comfortable. For the food, i got "The burger" and asked for it to be medium well. As you can see below, this is no where close to medium well, more towards the rare side. I wish I would have gotten our servers name because he was THE best waiter most of us had ever had. We were a large, rowdy group and all of our orders were correct. He was on top of refills before any of us even thought to ask. Even as he was walking away to put our food orders in one of us kind of half-a$$ed asked for a drink and he still caught it. My party of 3 went here on St. Patrick's Day - an extremely busy day in Dallas. They sat us very quickly, my glass was never even HALF empty, and my food came out incredibly fast.
