Ordered the fish 65, Dosa with chicken curry, and the parotta with mutton curry. The fish 65 was average, I think the chicken 65 would've been better, the fish inside wasn't as soft as I prefer with fried fish. The dosa was pretty good, but the parotta was the star of the show. Was very flaky, crispy, yet soft, and paired really with the mutton curry. A small issue is that the wait was quite long, the other tables next to us seemed agitated for the same reason, but since the shop seems newer, that will likely be solved with time. read more

I love trying new food, so I decided to try this place! I usually love India food but maybe it's Southern Indian food that I'm not a fan of? I couldn't tell you. I ordered a chicken curry and a chicken biryani. The curry was good for the first couple bites and then I wasn't a fan and the chicken had pretty big bones which I was shocked about to be in the curry. The chicken biryani was pretty good but also god old quickly. I just don't have this problem with other Indian food I've tried so I don't know how to pinpoint the issue. Wa the food good? First visit here. I was a little stand offish because I couldn't see anyone else in the restaurant. That being said I throughly enjoyed my meal. I liked that they didn't serve naan because they didn't have the clay over to make it. Authenticity is amazing. The menu was a lot to try and comprehend being Mexican and all but the chappati was great, the chili chicken was amazing!!! The veg was actually sautéed for the dish and not over or under cooked, and of course the plain basmati rice was white. Review is for Doordash lunch: Annachi Kadai is my second time venturing into Southern Indian this year. They seem to be famous for their Parottas (a type of flatbread) and Mutton Biryanis. I do agree that the Parottas are 5-star worthy, and a fine alternative to the usual naan. Parottas are crispy, flaky, and chewy flatbread similar in texture to the Scallion pancakes from Chinese cuisine. Its definitely less oily, but still buttery. Enjoy in moderation! The more I try the South Indian-style biryanis, the more I like the Seeraga Samba rice over basmati. The short-grain brown rice just seems more moist and easier to chew. The biryani was flavored well - spicy but not overwhelmingly. Two small bone-in chicken thighs with juicy meat round out this dish. I've been meaning to try this restaurant for a few months, so when I noticed it was right next door to the UPS store when I was dropping off a parcel this evening, I jumped at the chance to try it, especially as it was Friday evening when we usually take a break from cooking. They serve cuisine from the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu - which I'm not too familiar with, so I asked the proprietor for suggestions. We settled on fried fish, parathas, "dry" mutton, "dry" country chicken, and chicken curry. The food took about 25 minutes to prepare, and the service was friendly. Here's the verdict on each dish, in order of enjoyment: -- Parottas ($1.99 each): these were superb. Flaky, filling, enjoyed by all. -- Mutton Pirattal ($11.99): boneless chunks of perfectly cooked goat, only a slight amount of gravy, spiced just right. My favorite. The missus and kids found it OK. Smaller portion size than the two chicken dishes. -- Tawa fried fish ($9.99): I enjoyed this, the wife tolerated it, the kids didn't touch it. -- Curry Chicken Kulambu ($10.99): not too spicy, but the chicken was quite bony; wife found it too greasy. -- Nattu Kozhi Dry country chicken ($10.99): overpoweringly spicy, more grease than even I could handle. If a 'no meat' Chicken Biryani is something you want to avoid, please save yourself from ordering their Chicken Biryani. Or any meat biryani, because you'd have to pick out bones with little meat scraps on them. To emphasize how stingy they are, the quantity of their appetizers (e.g., fish 65, Nethli fish, etc.) has been cut in half. You're basically eating inflation for lunch! If you need to raise the price while maintaining the same quality/quantity, the customer will be more likely to return because they believe in the quality of your food. This place opened my eyes (more like taste buds) to a new (to me) kind of Indian food. I went in the restaurant, looked at the menu, and was greeted by completely foreign sounding food item names! I learned that they are southern Indian food. Trusting the recommendation of the server, I just ordered lamb curry and bread. Looking at the bill, I ordered "Mutton Pirattal Kulambu, and Parotta" I like the mutton but absolutely love the Parotta. I love naan, but this stuff is different and completely out of this world! For a taste of food from Tamil Nadu, AnnachiKadai was an unbelievable experience of authentic flavors and hospitable service! After sitting down, we were brought complementary sips of mutton soup, which was oily and had a tantalizingly peppery, spicy flavor. The thing to come for at AnnachiKadai is definitely their thali served on a banana leaf (traditionally wedding food in Tamil Nadu). There was both a veg and non-veg version, and both were built around a foundation of rice, chapathi bread, and an appalam cracker for crunch. The thing I love most about thalis is that they come with a small sample of so many different elements, each with their own distinct flavors and textures, creating a "tasting menu" of sorts, which is especially helpful when you can't choose from the menu (or are simply unfamiliar with the selections)! The veg thali came with Katharikkai sambar and Madurai rasam (two soups with distinct, sour flavors), Kothavarangai kootu (cluster beans), snake gourd poriyal, veg kurma (a creamy yellow curry), medhu bonda (fritter made with besan and rice flour), curd (a thick yogurt to offset the spices), urugai (green mango pickle), and rava payasam (a thick, sweet dessert with cashews and raisins)! What an amazing medley of flavors--there were so many different elements, both familiar and unfamiliar, but everything came together in perfect balance from the sourness of the soups, curd, and pickle, to the savory/spicy flavors of the curries, to the earthiness of the spiced vegetables, to the sweetness of the dessert. From the soft rice, which acted as a bed for the gravies, to the chewy chapati, to the crunch of the appalam--everything was simply amazing! The non-veg thali came with many of the same elements as the veg thali, but added on were the Kozhi kuzhambu (chicken curry), Kari kuzhambu (mutton curry), and chicken 65 (little nuggets of chicken coated in a deep-red coloring and fried). The two kuzhambu curries were on the spicy side, and the chicken 65 was a nice meaty addition to the thali. I also couldn't help but order a side of parotta, a super flaky, crispy, layered flatbread that went amazingly with all of the gravies! This was an unbelievable meal, and I still cannot get over the fact that a place offering such authentic, delicious South Indian wedding food even exists in the Bay Area! When I went to pick up, they first said order is not there, then checked order list and said they missed to print the phone order for packing. Rating - 5/5 I visited Annachikadai on March 12th, 2023 without checking the reviews beforehand, which is uncharacteristic of me. Having previously visited their mountain view branch during pre-pandemic times, I assumed that they would provide the same quality food. If I had seen a 3/5 rating, it would have deterred me from going. We ordered Chicken 65, Non-Veg Meals, Parotta, Idicha Chicken Kulambu, Chicken Biriyani, Potlam Parotta, and Mango Lassi. The Chicken 65 had the perfect Chennai-style taste, with plenty of quantity that no other restaurant could match. The Non-Veg Meals was very good, with the gravies having the right amount of chicken, mutton, and fish fillet, respectively. Refills were quick as the restaurant was not crowded, possibly due to the rain. I noticed that Chicken 65 and Chapathi were removed from the menu, and they also replaced the traditional South Indian sweet with a Gulab Jamun. Given the inflation and price point, I can't complain too much. The Chicken Biriyani was really good, with a balanced masala/spice and a good aroma. The quantity was generous, with three pieces of chicken, including one leg piece. The Parotta and Idicha Chicken Kulambu were fantastic. The kulambu was spicy but enjoyable, as you would expect from restaurant food. I also tried the Potlam Parotta, which I ordered based on the online buzz/ facebook videos, but I wasn't a big fan of it. It might not be the restaurant's fault, but the dish, in general, didn't appeal to me. I will definitely visit again for their Chettinad meals (which include Kuzhi Paniyaram and Chettinad Chicken), bucket biriyani. Service : Both the person who took the order and the chef/owner were very friendly. They checked on us and had casual conversation with us. --------------------------------------------------------- Advice for the restaurant: For the meals, please provide a small serving of Chicken 65. Since the Jamun size was small, please provide at least two. You can also provide two chapathis on request. In the past, I used to eat 5-6 chapathis with the chicken and mutton gravy, followed by very little rice for the fish gravy and rasam. So having the chapathi option is important for people like me. I also found the price of Mango Lassi ($4.99) to be steep. $2.99 to $3.49 would be a better price point. --------------------------------------------------------- I am providing a rating of 5 because we were totally satisfied with our experience.
