Toronto is a very diverse ethnic city which is reflected in its food etc. It has a huge Indian population which brings with it amazing restaurants. I really like Annalakshmi for true veggie dinning. Sure our server was a complete Dbag....maybe his hairnet made him miserable...but the food was excellent. My litmus for any ethnic restaurant is a majority of dinners from that region...and in that regard it was filled with mostly Indian dinners....legit!! I got the butter garlic masala dosa which came with 4 different things to eat with the dosa and the poori with aloo curry. Both were delicious and a little spicy. This has become my go to restaurant and I have had several positive experience with the different things I have ordered over the time. Some of my favourites are: Rasam, Chettinad Mushroom Fry and Chettinad Dosa. Middle-of-the-road all veggie south Indian, but staff aren't all that knowledgeable about what's vegan. I stopped in looking for a quick dinner, and quick it was. Their menu is all South Indian, with lots of types of dosa, uthappam, idli and more. I got their Rasam ($6 plus tax) soup to start, a simple, spicy lentil soup that wasn't all that impressive. If I had known that their main meals come with unlimited sambar, I wouldn't have ordered this - oh well. Curd rice is a staple for most south indians, the simplicity of the dish exposes basic mistakes. Good home made Yogurt that is neither thick or runny Good quality non basmati rice that is cooked, not under cooked finely diced ginger with Julienned Thai Chillis. Big Miss when the tadka with Mustard, Curry leaves and Asafetida is prepared make sure mustard seeds crackle, both the times this was a big miss and more importantly keep the curd rice served at room temperature not ice cold. read more

Def one of my fav south Indian spots in the city, was introduced to this spot by a friend and I really like the fact that it's a huge menu and reasonably priced. I've tried their chilli garlic dosa and their sambhar rice and I loved them both, the portions were huge and the dishes were very flavourful. I'm always excited to find good South Indian food, and Annalakshmi has been one of my go-tos during the pandemic. They deliver consistently good vegetarian South Indian food. I've tried several things on their menu since I order from them so often, and they've been great. The Idly, Vada, Dosa, and the accompanying sambar & chutneys are all great. The Madras fried rice is a tad spicy but flavorful. Even the Thali / meals are pretty good. Their buttermilk (mor) is a great savory beverage to wash it all down - most other Indian restaurants add way too much cumin that ruin it, but not Annalakshmi. For something sweet, the mango milkshake is very good, they also have kulfis, and a decent rose milk that reminds me of Madras summers. Let me start with food . The food was not great . The food took ages to come and the food that we ordered did not meet the standards . We ordered the thali and I took more than half hour for them to service . The idlis were hard and the vadas looked like it was fried twice to serve The service was really really bad . Hardly any waiters to take orders and once the orders were taken it took more than half hour to give a single dish . The dishes we ordered came after we finished eating the entire food and we had to literally pack it . The ambiance was okay . There was as a long queue but hardly anyone to handle it . High priced but good quality ingredients/friendly customer service CONS: 1. SURPRISED - if you can't finish your meal dining in, they charge you for EACH container for leftovers. So, I paid for extra coconut chutney, & then I have to pay for a small sauce container to take it home. 2. Your choice is to throw away the food, or pay extra to take your leftover food home. I've never experienced this before. 3. One tiny bowl of Rasam is $6.00 dining in but if you order out, it's much more quantity for the same price. Called the restaurant and were given two options - someone dropping food off after the restaurant closed (!) or giving us a partial refund by cash transfer (not original form of payment). Very pleased to have a South Indian restaurant in downtown Toronto. However they do need to get their on-line delivery orders correct. We ordered Paper dosais all 3 times. They got the first time order right and it's been downhill from there. The last two orders for paper dosai were somehow ignored and replaced with regular dosai. Last nights order was very unfortunate- my friend found a hair in her Uttapam, the appetizer was soaked in oil and the dosai were once again disappointing not paper. We saw several people show up after us who got a table (and it didn't look like they had a reservation). After 15 minutes we went up to the reception and were told to wait 15 more minutes.. already a bad sign, but we did stay. - Along with our food, we ordered a coffee, tea and one buttermilk. After spending 1.5 hours and making multiple requests for our drinks, we eventually decided to give up. Right then, we noticed the table next to us, where the customers had arrived just 10 minutes ago, get a drink. When we asked the waiter and the manager/person at the reception about our drinks, we were told (i) that table ordered a tea and we had ordered coffee - tea was ready so they got it. (ii) When we reminded them that our order also included a tea, they went on to say that the restaurant was out of milk so they couldn't get our order and they just walked away. Really excellent South Indian food. I had the Masala Dosa - the dosa was perfectly cooked and the potatoes inside were beautifully spiced. Chutneys were all on point as well.
