    Best Reuben in New Mexico
    Jim T.

It's another beautiful (but hot) day in Central New Mexico, and we have a treat for you. Join Tom Neiman and four of the boys from the VA Creative Writing Group as we venture to Northeast Heights and meet Annie, owner of Annie's Soup Kitchen. A delightful host, Annie also makes delicious food and has decorated her establishment with taste. The daily special Reuben was the best we have found in Albuquerque. You really want to visit Annie's and partake in some excellent fare with friendly service and a pleasing atmosphere that will make you want to come back again and again. Just click on the following YouTube video link and watch the show. https://youtu.be/7Wj3ynv_2Xk?si=X_HiEG6sz7s1zeZx

Annie's has been serving homestyle food successfully for decades. It seems like the wait staff has been there all this time, too. Everyone is very friendly.  There are no fancy tablecloths or placemats; a simple white dish towel serves that purpose. With many meals, a side of zucchini nut bread is served. Delicious! Tastes like dessert! My companion swears by their omelets--and the bite I took sold me! My turkey sandwich was on soft bread, fresh vegetables, and quality turkey. As a first-time diner, I really wanted to try the biscuits and gravy--this restaurant screams grandma's biscuits and gravy.  On this note, however, I was disappointed. The gravy was fairly bland. I added pepper, which helped, but didn't really fix it. I ended up eating half a biscuit and abandoning the dish.

My kids and I really enjoy Annie's. The service is always great and the food is consistently good. I LOVE the Gonzo, eggs over easy please!

We are definitely fans of this little gem. We weren't quite certain what to expect from the name and the very humble and hidden entrance. What we found just the other side of the doors was a charmingly old-fashioned restaurant space complete with pink tablecloths, floral carpets, and lovingly hand-painted art on the walls. It was such a homey space that in all honesty, the dining room reminded me less of being in a restaurant and more of suppers at the homes of my aunts or grandmothers when I was little. The atmosphere of homeyness was continued by the lovely server who used endearments like "sweetie" and "hon" rather than the colder and more formal "ma'am" or "sir" that I've become used to in dining. I'm not sure how we managed it, but Raz had The Gonzo, I had French Onion Soup, and we split a half-order of Blackberry Crepes for dessert. It was a pretty awesome brunch, but the definite star of the meal was dessert. The blackberry compote was sweet and tart and bursting with flavor, while the sweetened cream cheese inside was just plain decadent. We would love to come back and try more of the menu, though that can be difficult for a dedicated night-owl like me since it's on the other side of town and closes by 2 pm.

It is truly one of those rare neighborhood gems that feels both authentic and incredibly welcoming. The service was impeccable from the start, but the highlight was truly the charming interaction with the chef. He was kind enough to personally walk me through the evening's selections, and we had the most delightful chat! I decided on one of my absolute weaknesses: the Fresh Pork Dumplings. The chef was quite attentive and offered to add an onion paste, but after a brief explanation of my preferences, he was more than happy to prepare them exactly to my liking. It's that level of bespoke attention that I truly adore. The dumplings arrived steaming hot in just a matter of minutes absolutely bursting with authentic, clean flavors. It was a thoroughly wonderful experience, and I shall certainly be making this a regular stop on my Uptown rounds!

For me, it tasted just right because this is the flavors I grew up with. The dumpling dough had a nice texture that I prefer. My Ramen had a big fatty pieces of pork which is what I like. They didnt skimp. It was a good bowl of noodle soup. Wouldn't say its the best ramen I ever had, but it was good. Beef roll was good, I would say its one of the better ones I've seen in ABQ where its really filled with beef. Would recommend this. We also got soup dumplings and I will say that we didnt get the proper spoons for them. At first I thought they just didnt offer them, but looking at photos, we never got them. It makes a difference for your eating experience and enjoyment. We will definitely be back as this is one of the better Chinese restaurants in the area and you really get some real Chinese variety and not your basic generic stereotypical menu.

Watching the pot bubble right at the table made the whole experience feel interactive and cozy. I also tried one of their iced milk teas served in a cute panda cup that said "Enjoy :) Eat Well Live Well," which was just as tasty as it was adorable. The portion sizes were okay for the price.
